Sanford Offers Unemployed South Carolina Resident ‘Prayers’ Instead Of Stimulus Funds

Following the lead of a number of his fellow Republican governors, Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) has given some indication that he will not accept some of the money slated for South Carolina in the $787 billion economic recovery bill President Obama signed into law last week. “At times it sounds like the Soviet grain quotas of Stalin’s time,” Sanford said yesterday on Fox News.

On C-SPAN’s Washington Journal this morning, Sanford received a call from a Charleston resident who said he lost his job because he has been taking care of mother and sister, both of whom have serious illnesses. The caller told Sanford he is “wrong” to decline the money. “A lot of people in South Carolina are hurting. And if this money can come and help us out we need it.” In response, Sanford could offer him only his prayers:

CALLER: I hope you all are not playing politics with this. People in South Carolina are hurting. You know how unemployment rates are high right now and going up higher. We are running out of money in the unemployment bank — we need money for that, the people that need help. And I’m one of them, I can’t get no help. [...]

SANFORD: Well I’d say hello to Charleston because its home and I’d say hello to this fellow this morning and say that my prayers are going to be with him and his family because it sounds like he is in an awfully tough spot.

Watch it:

Sanford offered no other alternative solution for his constituent and instead argued that the state could not accept money to extend unemployment benefits because “increasing the tax on unemployment insurance” would negatively “impact the caller’s family” (although he didn’t say how).

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) — who sponsored an amendment to the stimulus bill that would allow state legislatures to “accept stimulus funding over the objections of conservative governors” — chastised Sanford on MSNBC this morning. “This program is an opportunity for Governor Sanford to target” the “chronically unemployed” and “chronically sick” communities in South Carolina. “I have got to believe that he is willing…to help these communities,” Clyburn said, asking,”Why won’t he?”

If prayin’ was gonna fix it, homie, it woulda been fixed a long damned time ago.

Cool! I’ve always wanted to live in a state where I could just “pray” my bills away….

Why in the world would the people of SC vote for such a goofball?

  5. WillowOrchid says:

Will his state legislature overrule this stupid decision? Why, why on Earthy does he think this is politically viable? And WHO is handing these “Governors” their talking points? Mr. Magoo?

  6. WillowOrchid says:

Dang it! EARTH, not Earthy! Oh, Magoo, you’ve done it again!

  7. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Contrary to popular belief, prayers do not pay the bills. Nor do they put food in someone’s belly or clothes on their back.

Again I ask, stop the planet. I want to get off.

  8. LibertyLover says:

Wow. Lot’s of “mini”- Hoovers in this country. Sanford, Jindal, Perry… their love of their constituents is amazing.

My father had a saying -

    - Pray in one hand and sh!t in the other, and see which gets filled first.

Prayers have never, ever helped anyone…a god that doesn’t exist can’t help you.

  10. mary says:

Did the caller reply with something like, “Well thanks for your prayers, but, I’d prefer the money”?

  11. tigger says:

I think this caller ought to just start living on the governor’s lawn. Hey, maybe everyone who is hurting in SC ought to do that. See how fast he gives in to force them off instead of praying for God to remove them….

“Come over to the dinner table, kids. Now, bow your heads and say grace. Okay, you’re excused.”

what an idiot. south carolinans and the rest of america is hurting… bad. unemployment is at a all time high. unless the senator is going to support all of the families in his state, then there should be no reason not to accept the stimulus.

You don’t need to elect somebody to pray for you. You can elect somebody who’s going to work for you, and have your pastor do the prayin’.

Yet another example of Republicans getting into government and then refusing to perform the job duties that they were elected/appointed to do.

  25. NOLIESPLEASE says:

Good ,the residents of SC should be proud of there elected officals.

So help me God.”

I think God might be getting tired of all the crap you keep dumping on Him. His judgment cometh, and that right soon.

  29. misshusseinmolly says:

Is THIS why the Republicans won’t support the stimulus package? Because prayer is so much cheaper and more efficient?

I recommend that every one of these Republicans who expect to be re-elected use this in their campaign. “My opponent wanted to spend money to help get our economy growing again. I advocated prayer!”

  30. pax says:

Sanford, my Governor and Sullivan’s Island neighbor, is a posturing tool, an I-too-can-be-President-if-I-start-campaigning-early-enough political whore. He doesn’t care one whit for the people of his state. His masters are elsewhere.

Prayers…? I’ve got your prayers right here, pal.

  36. KayInMaine says:

Republican Governor John Huntsman of Utah just gave a great interview with Nora O’Donnell when he pointed out time and again that the FLAT FOOTED REPUBLICANS (his words) are shooting themselves in the foot if they think denying this money to their states is good for them politically.

    He’s right.

Then Nora brought up the republicans “new plan” which is a plan they hashed out TWO DECADES AGO. Governor Huntsman’s response? Same as above. And he shook his head from side to side as if embarrassed of his party.

  37. P.D. says:

As a C-Span junkie(I watch every morning), I would like to say I was stunned. But what these politicians say is nothing short of stupid. As for the people of S.C., why did you vote for such an idiot?

  38. tarazan says:

I wish this prayer currency can be used in food stores, buying an air ticket, or a medicine.
    Sadly,praying will not do it.
The Governor knows that…but he has no answer to his state’s economic problems and he is playing politics with the recovery funds issue, while people in his state are feeling the pain.
If Governor has no answers, then he should resign his job and let someone else who has better answers to the current economic problems to take over if he is really an honest governor.
Prayers will not do it; there has to be a good will, good intentions, creativity and determination to solve this big problem that the country and the world inhereted from Bush’s regime.
God did not tell us to be too greedy, and that is the heart of our big financial problems today that is spilling all over many sectors of our economy.
It is a problem that we created ourselves…

  50. WAYNEBRO says:

This whole thing about rejecting stimulus money is a collective effort by the republicans to disavow President Obama and reject his authority as President.

After 8 years of sucking Bush’s butt, and demanding everyone else do likewise, they now refuse to even acknowledge President Obama or try in the least to work with him.

President Obama has been in office less than 2 months and he has received in that time ZERO support from the republicans.

If I were him I’d wash my hands of them and make them insignificant. They don’t want the money? Fine. Give their shares to Arnold Schwartzenegger and be done with it. At least Arnold is smart enough, and decent enough to work with the president, instead of acting like a bunch of spoiled party poopers who refuse to play because they didn’t get the team captain they wanted.

Well, that’s kind of vague. They should have made him write an essay on what he believes the duties consist of, and if he puts down “prayin’ for folks” then he doesn’t get the job.

The 2012 mantra for the power-hungry GOP is apparently states’ rights. 92. misshusseinmolly says:

I’m a Christian, and I certainly believe in the power of prayer. But faith in prayer must go hand in hand with common sense. Think about it — is it better for a mother to put her 6-month old infant into a car seat (strapped in properly), or just lay the baby anywhere in the car and say a prayer before starting to drive?

I’m sure everyone has heard this story, but it’s still a good one:

Flood waters were coming to the town, but one man had no fear — he had prayed to God for protection and was convinced no harm would come to him. He had faith.

As the river was rising to the top of the levees, a bus came down the man’s street. “Hop aboard, and I’ll take you to safety before the waters come,” said the driver. But the man refused, because he had prayed to God for protection and was convinced no harm would come to him. He had faith.

As the river spilled over the levees and water started filling the streets, a guy with a boat came by. “Climb aboard, and I’ll row you to safety,” said the guy in the boat. But the man declined politely, because he had prayed to God for protection and was convinced no harm would come to him. He had faith.

Finally, the waters were so high that the man could no longer stand on his porch or anywhere inside his house, and he took refuge on the roof. A helicopter came by and hovered overhead. “Climb up this rope ladder and we’ll fly you to safety,” said a man on the helicopter through a bullhorn. But the man said no, because he had prayed to God for protection and was convinced no harm would come to him. He had faith.

The waters kept rising, and the man ultimately drowned. When he met St. Peter at the gates of heaven, he said, “I just don’t understand it — I prayed and I had faith, yet God didn’t save me.”

St. Peter replied, “He sent you a bus, a boat, and a helicopter — what were you expecting?”

  102. EugeneDebs says:

    Mr. Philby Says:

Since when is offering prayer a bad thing? Is that far left loon logic, again?
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Actually it is just called logic. In contrast with what you rightwing morons replace it with called stupidity. Who said prayer was bad? It wont however take the place of, you know, FOOD. You do know that you are incredibly stupid dont you?

  103. barfly says:

Yet republicans founded the Southern Strategy, to disenfranchise black voters. Go figure.

And didn’t republicans promise blacks “forty acres and a mule,” yet renigged on it, a short while later?

  104. barfly says:

So, Philby seems to have a hard time posting anything positive, after 1970.

    I wonder why?

  105. little davey says:

Well Jesus Christ, God gave us the stimulus funds. The proper prayer is “Thank you Lord”.

  106. barfly says:

Did “Philby” fall into a wormhole?

Tell us, what’s it like, there in 1868?

  107. gummitch says:

Oh, lord, here we go again. “Abraham Lincoln was a Republican”

Yes, and he’s been spinning in his grave since 1968.

Modern Republicans deserve no credit for the party that WAS. It’s the party that IS that we have to live with.

  108. barfly says:

    little davey Says:

Well Jesus Christ, God gave us the stimulus funds. The proper prayer is “Thank you Lord”.

Will he tell me why my state refund is being held up if I pray hard enough?

  109. cturner57 says:

I agree that prayer is the way to go and that there is nothing more powerful than prayer. What Gov. Sanford appears to be missing is that the prayer has already been answered and it is called the stimulus package. He has been led thru prayer to the answer now all he has to do is accept it.

  110. dbearton says:

Sanford sounds like a typical southern, rightwing, religious buffoon. The south is full of them; that is why the south is so handicapped.

  111. EugeneDebs says:

    Mr. Philby Says:

Uh yeah moron we know then the RACISTS in the South traded parties.

As for the 64 civil rights bill lets look at THAT by region and party

    House version format

Southern Dems 7-87 that is 7% for and 93% against
Southern Reps 0-10 that is 0% and 100%

Northern Dems 145-9 that is 94% and 6%
Northern Reps 138-24 that is 85% and 15%

    Senate version

Southern Dems 1-20 that is 5% for and 95% against
Southern Reps 0-1 that is 0% and 100%

Northern Dems 45-1 that is 98% and 2%
Northern Reps 27-5 that is 84% and 16%

Then those Southern Dems became REPUBLICANS and the HEAD of the RNC had to appologize for the RACIST Souther strategy the GOP had been using. You really are an ignorant piece of work Philly

  112. barfly says:

    cturner57 Says:

I agree that prayer is the way to go and that there is nothing more powerful than prayer.

Yeah, that experiment on folks who were ill, and had someone pray for them, proved that. The ones who were told they were being prayed for got sicker faster than the ones who hadn’t been told, even though there was no positive change attributable to the prayer. That’s pretty powerful, all right.

  113. barfly says:

    dbearton Says:

Sanford sounds like a typical southern, rightwing, religious buffoon. The south is full of them; that is why the south is so handicapped.

    The incest helps…

  114. Scarlett says:

I feel so badly for the people of these states who did not vote for these buffoons. My heart goes out to them. I only hope that the majority of people whose unemployment insurance is about to run out, and who don’t know how they’re going to eat or where they will live when it does run out, and who got a little bit of hope when they heard what was in the stimulus, only to have it cruely dashed when their wing nut Governors said “oh no, you’re not getting that”, DID vote Republican. I hope they voted for these monsters, and I hope they voted for bush twice.

to them I say, how do you like that? How does that taste? How does that feel? Want some more?

  115. ElBruce says:

    Mr. Philby Says:

    Civil rights in the ’60s?

The Democratic Party has finally managed to purge itself of the Southern racist vote. I look forward to the Republican Party turning its back on them someday as well.

  116. gummitch says:

    EugeneDebs Says:

    Mr. Philby Says:

Uh yeah moron we know then the RACISTS in the South traded parties.

I’m going to bookmark that! I’ve never seen the geographic spread (as opposed to party) spelled out so clearly. Excellent.

  117. EugeneDebs says:

    gummitch Says:

Thanks I saw someone at media matters do that once it makes things MUCH clearer. I just looked it up again at Wikipedia

  118. greenpagan says:

Sanford is such an insufferable Neo-Confederate ass.

  119. MapleStreet says:

To put it in perspective, Sanford ran on a campaign of a farming family, etc.

What you need to understand, is that the farm is in the lowcountry of SC. Where the plantations were. (and their remnants extend to a lot of SC politician families as the homestead.

  120. Fontsdeleon says:

    You can’t eat prayers.

  121. mikewebb says:

lets ALL pray for a recall, or impeachment.
He certainly has placed the hidden agenda of the republican party over the best interests of the citizens of S carolina.
    Start a petition NOW.

  122. Bad Eye says:

Is this the same ass who went on CNN and, after declaring that McCain would not be Bush Jr., could not name a single policy difference between McCain and Bush?

    Thought so.

  123. flavorino says:

What is it with these Southern Republicans and governors?
It’s like they’re still fighting the Civil War against the U.S. (aka U.S.Federal Government).
    Talk about dead-enders.

  124. raintree says:

Mr. Philby- if this were the mid 1800’s YOU would be a democrat- and WE would be the Republicans. Go find a 5th grade american history textbook- and the fact that these parties have not stayed static- and have, in fact- changed places almost entirely since then- will become clear.

  125. Robt says:

I have a question for Gov Sanford.

Governor Sanford, you offered prayer to your states citizens instead of the stimulus money available that could assist an unempolyed in your state.

Governor, I thought you are supposed to be the governor of everyone in your state.

“You offer prayers to the religious. What do you offer the Agnostic and Atheists?”

  126. suema says:

You better pray all those poor unemployeed buggers forget come election day… they won’t!.keep up the good work… it’s good for the dems in 2010.

  127. dsmith says:

I am from SC and Sanford is not a bad governor but he has ambitions of being a frontrunner for the GOP presidential ticket in 2012. Much of this is postioning and he is doing it on the backs of his fellow South Carolinians.

As to all of the post about South Carolina being racist, ignorant and incestual…Have you read the New York Post lately?

Let me know where you’re from and I can dig up dirt on your state…in a New York minute!

  128. jpopphan says:

I hope that each and every state with a Republican governor (including my own state of Georgia) rejects any and all stimulus assistance from the Federal government. Let them stand by their ideology. Let them put their party over the people they allegedly serve and represent. Let those states suffer while other states flourish. Let the people in the states who miss out on the money remember it well when it comes time to vote again for governor.

We could see the entire USA turn blue if the GOP keeps up their pointless obstructionism.

(Oh, and I would just as soon see South Carolina fall off into the Atlantic, so screw ‘em.)

  129. peterjkraus says:

Pray for the poor South Carolingians, for they have screwed up big time.

Which is not really true. Truth is that roughly two thirds of Americans believe prayer works. Just like the Taliban, just like the Wahabis, just like the boys in the Vatican. Scary, no?

  130. undoctored says:

In addition to being a total hypocrite by deferring to God, Gov. Sanford shows that he is uneducated and pretentious. The article quotes him as saying”my prayers are going to be with HIM and his family,” but if you listen closely, you will hear his ungrammatical “my prayers are going to be with HE and his family.” We even have to correct his grammar while putting up with his stupidity.

  131. cazzie russell says:

The caller from South Carolina may be destitute, but on his deathbed, he will receive total consciousness. So he’s got that goin’ for him. Which is nice.
