Santelli Claims The White House Is Threatening Him: ‘My Kids Are Nervous To Go To School’

ricksantelli.jpg CNBC’s Rick Santelli appeared on at least two radio programs today to promote his “rant” against President Obama’s housing program. On G. Gordon Liddy’s radio program, Santelli called attention to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs’s response to his tirade. He cropped a quote from Gibbs to suggest the White House was pursuing a campaign of intimidation against him:

SANTELLI: He started that press conference saying, “I don’t know where he lives, I don’t know where his house is.” This is the Press Secretary of the White House. Is that the kind of thing we want? Is that —

LIDDY: It’s a veiled threat.

SANTELLI: It really is. [...] I don’t really want to be a spokesman, but I really am very proud of a) the response I’m getting, which is overwhelmingly positive, and b) discourse, that is debate. That if the pressure and the heat I’m taking from the White House – the fact my kids are nervous to go to school – I can take that, okay.

Listen here:

Santelli also appeared on Mike Gallagher’s radio show, again stating “it was very scary” to have the White House Press Secretary say, “we don’t know where he lives or where his house is.”

The White House, however, has made no threats against Santelli. Here’s Gibbs’s full quote (which Santelli conveniently failed to use):

GIBBS: I’ve watched Mr. Santelli on cable the past 24 hours or so. I’m not entirely sure where Mr. Santelli lives or in what house he lives but the American people are struggling every day to meet their mortgages, stay in their jobs, pay their bills, send their kids to school

Gibbs wasn’t threatening Santelli; he was pointing out the sheer absurdity of a well-to-do pundit criticizing Obama’s housing plan as seeking to simply “subsidize the losers’ mortgages.”

As the Wonk Room has reported, The Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan aims to help up to “7 to 9 million families restructure or refinance their mortgages to avoid foreclosure,” thus halting the ever-increasing number of foreclosed upon properties dragging down home values for entire neighborhoods. Santelli is not working to promote constructive debate about the merits of the President’s plan. Instead, Santelli — who made his rant before even reading the plan — has called for a “new Boston tea party” protest and appears more interested in spreading falsehoods with Liddy, a Nixon-era political operative who actually conspired to kill a political opponent.

Today’s Progress Report notes that media outlets are still shamelessly promoting various byproducts of Santelli’s outburst, with CNBC and Drudge leading the way.

Update In September 2008, Santelli claimed the economy was healthy. Watch it:

Now Obama is threatening wealthy pundits? Wow, the right side is really of their rockers. It’s gonna get real ugly out there.

Santelli must be some reichwingnut moron. I do not believe he is being threatened.

WOW even for a rightwing pundit that is amazingly dishonest. Way to raise the depravity bar. He reminds me of HS Thompsons description of Agnew. A flat out knee crawling thug with the morals of a weasel on speed.

Better not tell GLiddy where you live… he will organize the break-in.

  6. barfly says:

    LIDDY: It’s a veiled threat.

Like your threat to kill anyone who happened upon that psychiatrists’ office break-in, back in the ’70’s?

    Liddy needs an enema.

  7. Buckie Boy says:

This is the new ReichWing talking points, they are talking civil war.

Glenn “the Liar” Beck has been pushing on his show that the insanely stupid Righties build bunkers, stock up on ammo and food for the upcoming 2014 civil war and tax revolt.

And they all got the memo from their hive mothers.

the fact my kids are nervous to go to school – I can take that, okay.

Isn’t he just the cat’s meow. So big; so powerful; so brave — to put his kids through a bunch of stress so that his worthless a$$ can gain some press coverage.

I hope his kids figure the game out before they undergo any permanent trauma. I suspect they’d disown him as their father.

  9. Keith says:

Liddy was actually going to KILL Washington Post reporter, Jack Anderson, because he misunderstood something Nixon said and thought Nixon wanted him KILLED. I am serious.

  15. bcc says:

    Liddy knows all about threats.

Obama’s strategy is very interesting. Give the far-right/wingnut crowd the spotlight, in order to alienate the middle away from them and toward him. Given how this crowd has taken the bait, I think it’s going to be a great strategy.

  16. sgwhitefla says:

Just so I got this straight, its now a threat to say you DON’T know where somebody lives? Well damm I guess we had it backwards all along. I thought when someone say they DO know where you live is when you are supposed to get nervous. But of course GOP hacks are always scared of their own shadow.

  17. GSD says:

Ah another advocate of CVS. Conservative Victim Syndrome. The liberal media is out to get him!

It’s funny how the rightwingers have accused liberals, Democrats and the left of being a pack of effeminate, cowardly, Frenchified weaklings who are unwilling and unable to fight, yet they are now in high dudgeon over the imagined impending threat of violence by the same leftists and liberals.

Like anybody gives a crap about Rick Santelli? Nobody cares about him enough to hurt him.

  19. Marie says:

Claiming “veiled threats” is cowardly and dishonest.
We should expect nothing more from the likes of Santelli and other Wall Street vulchers. His rant the other day may have brought him plenty of face time on the cable news channels, but long term, it was stupid, juvenile, and wrong.
Republicans are wrong – wrong-headed – wrong in policy, wrong in politics — but loud mouths like Santelli who play the bully are typically unable to take criticism without crying foul.
Now he falsely claims his children are victims of the White House — Gimme a break.

  20. Marie says:

Like most bullies – they are actually cowards.

  26. StratRat says:

Odd. Just last Friday I heard Santelli say he was thrilled the Gibber had “engaged him in dialogue.” Makes ya wonder how many hefty henchmen Gibbs sent out to Santelli’s to rough him up over the weekend. (Gibbs was so clever that in his presser he pretended he didn’t know where Santelli lived — when all along his wiseguys must have been on the way to Santelli’s. Very diabolical, that Gibbs.)

  58. Cats r Flyfishn says:

If their insanity wasn’t so dangerous, these right wingnuts would really be funny. What a fantasy world this Santelli lives in. No one threatened him but his insane mind fabricated this fantasy. I live next door to a crazy liar who is always fabricating some kind of story where he is threaten by someone or something. My neighbor went as far as putting cameras in several of the trees that surround his house just in case someone was out to get him. Santelli sound likes the same kind of crazy.

  69. BrianFL says:

What a grand-standing little turd grasping for his Joe The Plumber-esque 15 minutes of infamy.

It was obvious what Gibbs was referring to about Santelli’s home (implying that maybe Santelli lives in a wealthy area that is not getting hit as hard as more average or poor areas of the country).

I wonder if we can get a moral bailout for Santelli, because he’s obviously morally bankrupt. He rants about a housing plan he had not even seen, then misleads about the comments from the Press Secretary to imply he made a personal threat.

  70. RUCerious says:

It’s almost like Santelli NEEDS some threatening, like he craves it and the attention.

Wonder how long the wingnuts can get mileage out of this one? Can they keep it alive as long as the “China is drilling off Cuba’s coast” whopper?

CNBC should be held accountable as well as Santelli.

  86. Teowens says:

So let me get this straight. Obama, the President of the United states, is going to take time out of his busy schedule to harass a CNBC commentator??? Who’s slaming a plan he hasn’t even read yet. Why? He’s not even worth it.

  96. Scarlett says:

This is one of the reasons – besides for her vote against banning the use of cluster bombs in civilian areas – that I believed Hillary Clinton could not be President. I was young when Clinton became President, and completely bewildered when I first started seeing The Crazy. But after eight long years, I understood that The Crazy was out there, and that it always would be. During the eight years of the Bush presidency, I knew that The Crazy was supporting him, and demonizing anyone who didn’t, and I knew they were lying in wait for the next Democratic President.

If that president had been a Clinton, then the American people would have probably thought “oh, it’s the Clinton wars again, God I’m so tired of those Clintons”.

Instead, now that we have Obama as the Democratic President, there is a much bigger chance that the people will see The Crazy for what it is. And that they will reject it so furiously, that the Republican party will be shit-canned.

  100. Ape-Man says:

  101. Bullsmith says:

  113. helenahandbasket says:

Santelli: “Help the Paranoids are after me.”

  114. eve says:

Thanks, Santelli. You’re ridiculous comments are just further proof that you are a lunatic.

No one is threatening you. For one thing, you aren’t that important.

For another, threatening people over their viewpoint is what the last White House did. This one does not do that. They just call you out and let people decide for themselves whether or not you are an idiot.

    You are an idiot.

  115. Shinning Light says:

Where was Mr Santelli’s concern & outrage when the French were being targeted a couple of years ago?

Children of French Embassy employees in DC area were teased and shunned by ‘patriotic’ American classmates then. A friend, temp teaching at a private school in the area had to spend part of a class period dealing with the prejudice and then had private comfort/counseling sessions with some of the children.

  116. kasinca says:

He voted for McSame, he went on the Gordon Liddy show, he replaced Joe the Plumber as RNC hero….he is a bonafide wing nut. Change of subject.

  117. mk3872 says:

Ahhh, poor, poor, Santelli … You mean his driver taking his kids to their private school has to raise the bullet-proof glass on the limo?

What a LOAD OF STEAMING CRAP. Gibbs was clearly talking about what type of house he must have because he is a spoiled rich wall street trader!

  118. doubtobama says:

I absolutely thought the big pink pig (Gibbs) was threatening Santelli.

By the way- the woman who stole her house back with Acorn’s help took out a 260,000 dollar home equity line. Acorn hasn’t talked about that or where the money went. Why don’t all you idiots pay for her home and leave the rest of us alone?

  119. Zooey says:

If this moron is telling the truth, and his kids are nervous to go to school, he needs psychological counseling because only HE put those thoughts in their heads.

    What a sick f uck.

  120. Alecto says:

Did you see the other pussies in the trading room when Santelli was having his cricle-jerk. WHat a pathetic bunch of little pussies, all shouting like they were cheerleaders. Hoo Rah. You go Santelii, you let em have yeah team.

F ucking disgusting pile of freaks.

  121. EugeneDebs says:

    doubtobama Says:

My Goodness you really are a bone ignorant moron arent you? The only reason in the WORLD to think that is a threat is because you have some need to or you were TOLD to think that. On Planet Earth it makes no sense at all. As for ACORN go get your cookie from Rush you have successfully regurgitated this weeks talking point. It was STUPID, meaningless and off topic but hey, a moron like you has got to take what he can get. You have lots and lots of stupid. Perhaps you can try to aquire a cerebral cortex

  122. RickD says:

What a complete an utter fraud.

Yes commenting on Santelli’s privileged background = threatening his children!

  123. 45ACP says:

I’ve finally come to the conclusion that the only good republican is a dead republican.

  124. Shinning Light says:

    To Zooey – #125

A reply from the past-yes, I know how to spell shining. It was a deliberate choice for several reasons.

Sorry if it annoys you. Lights shine with many facets and patterns.

  125. suema says:

get over it santelli. your ranting all made sense when you admitted who you voted for on the chris matthews show. you are discredited and are just acting like a sore loser as are the rest of the repubs. tell your kids ‘don’t be scared, the dems only kill fetuses, not kids’..a**hole!

  126. Joe the Philosopher says:

Santelli is just another rich thug. Odds are good he’s a crackpot Zionist who thinks it’s okay to give billions to loser, Jewish owned and run banks but not to loser home owners. Okay to give money to Jewish owned and run investment banks, but don’t help the auto industry which employs millions of honest Americans.

I say we nail the Zionists to a cross.

  127. millie lencioni says:

Santelli is nothing more than a typical hysterical Repubilcan bully. They can’t seem to grasp the notion that they are no longer in control in Washington so they will do or say whatever it takes to grab the headlines. When you can make outright lies and expect people to accept them as truth, something is very wrong with you. It might be time to step out of the media glare and get some professional help. Blatantly trying to stop our president from any sucess should be seen as treason, and a reason for any and all politicians to be removed from office. They were all voted into office for the good of the country, not for individual or party goals.

  128. Klem Kiddilehopper says:

In Gibbs’sarcastic remark about where Sentelli lived, he was refering back to McCain and his many houses!

  129. MrSquirrel says:

Hey, when your spokespeople include criminal thugs like G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver North, you ought to know your philosophy is morally bankrupt.

How do these folks who actively, aggressively subverted the American system of government, become popular mouthpieces for a major political constituency, instead of spending their lives in jail, as they deserve to?

  130. LizCoro says:

    On Hardball . .

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Who did you vote for in the last election?

    SANTELLI: Mr. McCain

    [CRICKETS]

  131. Salmon Dave says:

What a nut bag……I’ve heard Santelli try to politicize the financial news before….but this is paranoia…imagine Obama threatening his kids…black helocopters are coming soon.

  132. Susan in WA says:

45ACP: My dad has become a good Republican. He doesn’t vote, hasn’t for years. We get along great now.

  133. JNagarya says:

Then why doesn’t he get off the public dole by pulling his kids out of the taxpayer-subsidized public school system and put them in the privatized school system more suited to his superior economic status and intellect? Could it be because he’s a loser?

  134. JNagarya says:

“Santelli is nothing more than a typical hysterical Repubilcan bully. They can’t seem to grasp the notion that they are no longer in control in Washington so they will do or say whatever it takes to grab the headlines. When you can make outright lies and expect people to accept them as truth, something is very wrong with you.”
    _____

Maybe he isn’t lying. Maybe he’s a psychologist, and his rah-rah economic fantasies are just the psychology the economy needs. Wasn’t there a Republican Senator who said the equivalent: that the economic downturn doesn’t actually exist; that it is all in the heads of non-Republicans?

  135. 45ACP says:

Susan in WA: I moved from WA to TX (the a$%hole of the known universe, in my opinion) a few years ago. Plan to move back to WA within a year.

I’m glad your dad has stopped voting and become one of the good guys.

Living in TX among inbred, racist, bible-banging GOPer morons has been an eye- opening experience for me. Interaction with them demonstrates to me that they will never be confused by facts. Lost cause, I’m afraid.

So, when the locals start telling me I don’t understand ‘southern culture’ I just tell them I don’t respond to oxymora of any kind.

  136. branic says:

Santelli is a total idiot. What he is getting threatened by is his inside trading may come to halt. Only he can think that a person getting $20,000 a year in dividends is poor.
