Bush launches speaking tour, promoting his policies that were ‘controversial at times’ but ‘kept the country safe.’

bushred2.jpg As the Dallas Morning News reported earlier this month, George W. Bush’s first post-presidency address will be in Canada on March 17. The closed event is being billed as “a conversation with George W. Bush,” during which he will “share his thoughts on his eight momentous years in the Oval Office.” Politico reports that Bush has already scheduled at least 10 more speeches this year, in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He is now represented by the Washington Speakers Bureau. From his bio on the site:

President George W. Bush served in the Oval Office for eight of the most consequential years in American history. Faced with challenges from a terrorist attack to a global financial crisis, he made difficult decisions that will shape the nation’s course and world affairs for decades to come. His leadership after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, was an inspiration to millions of Americans. His policies, while controversial at times, kept the country safe for more than seven years and liberated more than 50 million people from tyranny.

In 2007, Bush said he was looking forward to making a “ridiculous” amount of money on the lecture circuit once leaving the White House.

“kept the country safe for more than seven years”

Unfortunately he was President for eight years. It’s like saying falling off an 80 story building is perfectly safe for more than 79 stories.

So , he’s planning on prattling on about the perch he caught and nothing else ?

    That was predictable………

Yes, it would be ridiculous if he made any money or if any damn fool listened to his babble.
Get the handcuffs ready, he can’t run that fast.

You couldn’t pay me enough to sit in an audience and listen to this bozo. I find it hard to believe that GDumbya will find enough takers to pay him to give a speech.

On the other hand, anyone who pays him to give a speech will be spending “a ridiculous amount of money”. If someone paid him $25 and bought him a free lunch, I would consider it a “ridiculous” expenditure.

  14. DRxJ says:

I have always loved the argument that he’s kept our country safe for 7 years, completely ignoring the fact he failed the first 8 months in office.
It’s kind of like saying you’ve learned you lesson after drinking, driving, and killing an innocent family in a motor vehicle accident. Sure, blood was shed, but hey, no drinking and driving accidents since then!
And no offense, Dubya, but killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians does not warrant appreciation.
Having thousands of military lives lost due to your purposeful misleadings does not a great speaker make.
You are a dolt. You’ve always been a dolt. You will continue to be a dolt!

It turned out that way , because of his idiocy and awful decision-making ; nothing else………

  19. Pennsylvanianne says:

Bush II’s policies and his administration’s deliberate ignoring of a report on bin Laden didn’t keep the US safe on Sept. 11, 2001. His policies killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and turned that country into a cesspool. Why would any thinking person pay to hear what this dolt, who was not even elected by the American people in 2000 and arguably wasn’t in 2004, have to say?

  24. misshusseinmolly says:

So he’s going to make a “ridiculous” amount of money by turd-polishing?

Let’s compare this to other past presidents –

His two immediate predecessors, Bill Clinton and his father, worked together for relief efforts for the victims of the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.

Jimmy Carter built houses, worked to advance world peace through the Carter Center, and managed to snag a Nobel Peace Prize.

Even Richard Nixon managed to write a handful of books that were more than just ghost-written puff pieces.

Of course, it’s still early in Dubya’s post-presidency. But he might want to think about what he can do besides lie for money.

  25. raynman says:

His policies, while controversial at times, kept the country safe for more than seven years and liberated more than 50 million people from tyranny.

As noted by other people, it doesn’t say much about that first year in office, does it? And what about that little thing called Katrina? I’m sure New Orleans felt real safe.

And what about the 300 million who are now suffering under the economic tyranny that he forced on us?

  26. GregM says:

We weren’t attacked on the homeland for the eight years BEFORE September 11. But I don’t hear Clinton running around saying I kept you safe.

The Clinton administration thwarted several al Qaeda plots, including one scheduled for New Year’s Eve of 1999 which would have been bigger than 9/11. That’s what you call keeping us safe.

  42. 5th Estate says:

In 2007, Bush said he was looking forward to making a “ridiculous” amount of money on the lecture circuit once leaving the White House.

When Bush was campaigning for the presidency he had a personal fortune estimated at about $20 million.
Then he was paid $400,000 a year as president ‘taking home’ about $300,000, thus making approximately $2.4 million during his tenure. His only expense was his ‘ranch’ which, as he spent about 30% of his time there, I imagine was fully subsidized.

Given his ‘accomplishments’ I’d say he has already made ‘ridiculous’ money–not in gross amounts (see Wall Street bonuses) but in general.
Clinton before him of course got the same salary and benefits, but given what his administration accomplished for the nation the money he received for doing his job was not ridiculous at all.

The Commission has found no credible evidence that this was so. Ambassador Carney had instructions only to push the Sudanese to expel Bin Ladin. Ambassador Carney had no legal basis to ask for more from the Sudanese since, at the time, there was no indictment out-standing.”

    In CANADA–not in the U.S.
    “closed”–select audience
“conversation”–Botch will ramble; others will listen and cheer
“share his thoughts”–then he’ll have to cite sources, since actual “thoughts” seldom crossed his mind
“momentous”–8 years filled with “moments” and their consequences for which the U.S. will suffer for years, at home and in reputation abroad
“in the Oval Office”–when he wasn’t taking more vacations than ANY previous president

    – Um…which “problems” would these be? The problem of getting mired in somebody else’s civil war? More than two years ago. The problem of unaffordable health insurance? More than two years ago. The problem of the entire world hating us? More than two years ago. The problem of our government eroding our freedoms in the name of “security”? More than two years ago. And if you’re going to blame our current economic woes on a razor-thin and completely ineffective Democratic majority in Congress when your party was deregulating like mad and allowing the corporate fat cats to loot and pillage, you’ll have to provide some proof in detail.

“At least President Bush was a step up from Carter and Clinton.”

Usually trolls can be drawn into direct discussion including full explanation of their position and citing of sources, but Philby seems to be immune. He hints that Dems were responsible for deregulation, but doesn’t support it. He hints that Bush’s illegal actions prevented major terrorist attacks, but doesn’t support it.

By now it’s quite clear that Philby simply doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s in a league way over his head here, and doesn’t know what to do other than repeat a few phrases he’s heard about over at freep. It’s really a shame.

They aren’t so much paying Bush to hear him speak. They just want to see if he will walk into a door or some stupid sh!t like that. Of course, he’s also bound to make some hilarious, idiotic gaffes. You can’t pay anyone to make this stuff up.

  157. Fontsdeleon says:

Sure he kept the country “safe”. Safe so he could bankrupt it with 2 contrived wars, millions of outsourced jobs and making 400 people rich beyond human comprehension. I can’t stand the sight or sound of this vile, contemptible, sorry ass excuse for a human being. The damage he’s done will last forever.

  158. shoeless says:

    Mr. Philby Says:

    Gay marriage, anybody? Failed! Lost!

Oh, when you said your marriage broke up, I assumed you were married to a woman.

  159. ralph the wonder llama says:

Mr. P, while it may seem to you that your arguments (such as they are) present compelling testimony of the truth of your ideas, to those of us who don’t share your cranial space, they just seem like random belches from a corpulent troll who gorges himself on the political equivalent of Hungry Man frozen dinners.

Just a tip from a friend.

  160. telestai2 says:

    The Republic of Stupidity Says:
    telestai2 Says:

[BTW, name ONE life lost or ONE family driven into poverty because of Clinton’s “crime.”]

Well… well… what about the MILLIONS of potential babies aborted by Clinton and Monica, huh? Did you think of them?

I abase myself, TRoS. Just cannot seem to shed my librul bias: real humans matter more to me that “potential” humans.

    Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.

  161. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Mr. Philby Says:
“A cut and paste production by a partisan d-bag …….Be still my fluttering heart”

Yea, tp and your other fav blog, “news”hounds, they’re not “partisan” are they? LOL!

Of course they’re partisan. Your mistake in assuming that “partisan d-bag” is a single phrase.

In fact it consists of two parts — “partisan” which is not necessarily good or bad, but simply describes a condition of which both you and TP take part, and “d-bag” which is a decided insult and in this case when applied to you, is appropriate.

So, to recap: one can be a partisan without being a d-bag, or one can be both, as you have demonstrated, and be thusly termed a “partisan d-bag”.

    Clear now?

  162. telestai2 says:

    shoeless Says:

And yet somehow he left out the name, Phil Gramm. How is it that no right-wing Republicans have ever heard of former Republican Senator Phil Gramm?

Repugnicants only “hear of” folks who oppose repug ideology. Everyone else is on the team, and ya gotta talk the talk an’ walk the walk fer yer team.

  163. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Mr. Philby Says:
When you can’t refute attack the messenger! LOL

Yeah, well, it can be tough to refute the random vocalizations of a Trollette’s patient, such as:

    “Gay marriage, anybody? Failed! Lost!”

One must generally need to make a cogent point in order to be refuted.

Maybe that’s why you so studiously avoid making cogent points… I always just assumed it was because you were incapable doing so.

  164. fergus says:

#53 asked if Shrub would be taking any questions. I have a question for him. Can I get fries with that? I’ll bet that Georgie would be making more money as a door greeter than as a speaker.

  165. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Mr. Philby Says:
    Clear now?

Yes, liberal hypocrisy, front and center, again.

Explain please? can you identify this hypocrisy of which you speak?

Or do you find it emotionally satisfying simply to proclaim “liberal hypocrisy” with no evidence, and assume that others will buy your judgment (no doubt because you’ve built up such a sterling reputation to this point)?

  166. telestai2 says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

Mr. P, if you keep grasping at straws like this, before long you’ll be able to stuff your very own straw man.

Anyone wanna join me in stuffing straws up P’s wahoo?? Then he would remind us even more of the Scarecrow: if he only had a brain. [It was FUNNY in Wizard of Oz. Not so much here in the real world.]

  167. ralph the wonder llama says:

Mr. P, when you post a comment and it fails, a repeat performance seldom makes up the difference.

  168. getplaning says:

The sad fact is, more Americans died as a result of terrorism during the Bush administration than under all previous administrations combined. Leave it to the Bush Perception Management Team to spin that as some kind of achievement.

  169. telestai2 says:

Mr. Philby Says: Nice “skirt,” elbruce!

The fact that YOU are at home in skirts doesn’t mean that anyone else is. . . except maybe Darryl and some other closet cases.

[Yes, I KNOW that you meant "skirt" in a different sense.]

  170. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Mr. Philby Says:
Explain how “we are left leaning” yet gay marriage continues to fail.

To explain it would require you to be capable of more than simplistic thought.

You see, a reasonable observer might look beyond a single issue’s performance on ballots in select states, and might instead look at national poll results on such issues as universal health care, abortion rights, economic policies… or they might look at the overwhelming results of recent elections…

And, based on most of these elements, it appears that the US is a left-leaning nation.

Of course, you have your “gay marriage” talking point to rebut all of these issues.

Of course, this still has nothing to do with “liberal hypocrisy”, unless your definition of “hypocrisy” differs from mine. or from Webster’s>

Obvious Troll is Obvious. Engaging Obvious Troll is foolish, and is exactly what Obvious Troll wants. Obvious Troll has argued the thread in a pretzel, while never actually handling anything. Obvious Troll argues one point, gets squashed, then brings up a totally unrelated topic. Obvious Troll wants to derail the topic and is sitting in its basement with its drawers open and playing with its joystick. This is only a game to it. Imagine it with its drawers open and playing the game with its joystick. Let that mental image slip into your mind. Then proceed to ignore Obvious Troll, lest it become Successful Troll. Do you want Successful Troll to be Successful?

(Sorry for the 4-Chan Speak. But I’m sorry, Mr. P has never made sense, and now he’s back and we’re giving him what he so desperately needs? Let him find his lulz elsewhere, eh?)

Though I will say…this is the price of success. Ah, the sweet taste of victory. Not even Obvious Troll can overcome that. The sweet taste of victory that can only be brought by a nearly 2/3rds majority in the House and a 59 vote lead in the House. And clearly, Spectre, Snow, and Collins can read the writing on the board. So Obvious Troll tries to get its lulz, but what I really love is that we have epic lulz…in the form of President Barack Obama and a heavily Democratic House and Senate. Epic Lulz for the Win. ;) OK, I’ll stop now. ;) :-D
