Film producers buying ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ kids new homes.

slumdog-disneyland1.jpgLast month, it was revealed that the child stars of “Slumdog Millionaire” were still living in “grinding poverty,” despite the enormous success of the film. The Daily Mail reports today Danny Boyle and Christian Colson, the director and producer, respectively of the Oscar-winning movie, are working with a Mumbai housing association to move the children into new “bricks and mortar flats” in the coming months. They will also hire a rickshaw driver to take the kids to school. “These children are special and have won laurels for the country and we want to felicitate them,” said Amarjeet Singh Manhas, chairman of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.

    Make them – friendlier?

I hope they availed themselves of the celebrity suites, were it is rumored they were handing out gifts worth over $30,000.

    – - At least TP didn’t write fellatiate.

    – - Listen….. you smell a sequel?

  4. barfly says:

and we want to felicitate them.’ -is in the original quote. Perhaps they mean show friendship towards the children – a strange concept, considering it’s partly their job to get kids out of these conditions.

    – - If they’re lucky they’ll get Ching-Chong Ding-Dong.

Not sure what to make of this.

    Trolls, listen up.

Not everyone is visible enough to have the media vouch for them when they’re wronged, so everyday people carrying out the business plan need their own vehicle to ensure they’re not exploited: union power.

  7. rastaman says:

big deal….little better than tossing them a bone or hush money

By showing it’s grinding poverty, and unsanitary living conditions?

    Talk about monumental insincerity…

  9. wiley says:

I think they mean “congratulate” them with rewards. It sounds terrible though.

  10. barfly says:

    Facilitate make more sense, though.

  11. barfly says:

Actually, I wonder if the kids have given thought to immigrating to the US, with their immediate families.

Right now, their marketability could garner considerable profit, with the right positioning, and considerable income for their families.

    Disney should snap them up.

  12. Krazny says:

Paying for these kids to go to school and be educated so they can escape the poverty of Mumbia would be a very good idea.

  13. Gregor Samsa says:

Guys, felicitate is a perfectly good English word. It means congratulate. Although I have to agree it sounds a bit awkward and arcane.

As for the housing authority, it’s nice they worry about these kids and are looking to move them into a flat but -what about all the other families & their children who are still living in shacks?

  14. WAYNEBRO says:

While building them a new house and hiring a rickshaw driver to take them to school all sound like nice ideas, I’ve got one.

How about they just cut them in for some of the profits like they would for any other actors?

Then they could build their own house, and hire their own Rickshaw driver.

And eat once in a while.

  15. P.D. says:

I refuse to be cynical about this. But wouldn’t it be nice if all the people of the world had homes?

Yes, perfectly cromulent… it’s use embiggens us all…

How about they just cut them in for some of the profits like they would for any other actors?

Sadly, very few actors see a portion of the profits… neither net nor gross.
If they can get some commercial work out of it they might get residuals out of that, my father went to College on his residuals from childhood commercials…

  17. belac says:

Obviously the profits would be net… I meant to say that very few actors are able to negotiate for a portion of the films receipts… net or gross.

I think their families would get beaten up and robbed if they were given a lump sum of money. The slums of India are tough, and law enforcement in India is a joke.

  19. ozma10 says:

I agree that they should be able to buy their own home and hire their own rickshaw driver. As for the slums of India these children and their families should be able to be lifted out of those places and their whole families educated if desired. This whole debacle is shameful and exploitative.

Very few American Actors get a %. These kids aren’t Will Smith or Bruce Willis, they don’t even have a SAG card. It looks like Boyle is doing the right thing (finally).

  22. Annie B. says:

It’s about time that they give the children decent places to live rather than just paying their school fees and also paying them for acting in the movie.

I hope that they were generously paid for their work–like American actor’s union scale would go a long way in India.

  23. ProudIndian says:

Indians should be angry as hell to be called Slumdogs! so much for that British MORON who dared to call Indians slumdogs. Maybe this idiot should look in the mirror and make a movie on the English slumdogs that they actually are, who know nothing else but to loot people and steal their wealth.

That didnt work out for them either because Brits are at the mercy of the Americans for survival with their economy in a collapse!

The Indian Government should ban these morons from ever entering India again.

    Serves them right
