Senate confirms Hilda Solis as Labor Secretary.

Today, the Senate voted 80-17 to confirm Hilda Solis as Labor Secretary. The vote is a defeat for anti-worker conservatives, who have been stalling her nomination since Obama nominated her on Dec. 19. Responses from the AFL-CIO, SEIU, and UNITE HERE.

Update Jason Rosenbaum at the Seminal writes, "What’s more, given her strong progressive bona-fides and her vote in the House for the Employee Free Choice Act, we can safely say that the first battle over passing the Employee Free Choice Act has been won. I think it’s safe to expect strong support for unions and working families from Secretary Solis, and that includes supporting Free Choice."
Update Roll call vote here.

That is a very little deuce coupe, isn’t it? Tiny, one might say.

I do wonder why “conservatives” hate working people so much.

  9. McWars says:

    Deuce Coupe

It’s within your comfort zone to bash the unions. Standard fare.

Have you ever thought of health care costs?

Haver you ever thought of bad strategy from the higher ups ^^^?

Right wingers never explain what fighting for a decent standard of living has to do with the viability of a company.

  12. McWars says:

Why should decent wages and pensions be a thing of the past? It’s proven: the decline in union influence has been tied to decline in wages and job security.

  13. SP Biloxi says:

It’s about time that Ms. Solis is confirmed finally. Now, I am looking forward to following her work as Labor Secretary and the future investigation into to Senator McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, the former Labor Secretary.

  19. Bobwurst says:

    Tom Baker,

righties never take responsibity for their own behavior. Ever. Bush’s biggest mistake was trading sammy sosa. rumsfeld went to war with army he had, not the army he wanted, derivative traders blame the people who were sold crappy morgateges not the theives who sold them. Fort Myers Fla has the one of the highest rates of foreclourses in the country. That’s not ACORN country, that’s rich people who were speculating on condos. GM, Ford, Dodge, have crappy designs and are being gutted by the greedy health care industry.

But it’s all the unions’ fault…

  20. Bobwurst says:

Union bashers are toadys and scabs. Men and women fought, and died, literally, for the rights we take for granted.

  21. tombaker says:

3 generations in my family, Bob

the 2 elder of those were beaten by Pinkertons, paid for by their employers.

I remember all who were robbed, beaten, and killed – all to get a fair shake and a 5-day workweek.

that is some history too many have forgotten.
that is something no one should take for granted.
that is something Medals of Honor should’ve been awarded for.

  22. Nevar says:

It wasn’t rank and file union members who bought every foot of Lake Michigan shoreline at $1,000 per. It was the wave of white collar management retirees who built their 5,000 sq.ft. second homes, drove up the cost of living so high that no one can afford to live there anymore. Now they whine and cheese that there’s no laborers left to plow their driveways, rake their lawns, and fix their burst plumbing.

  24. Bobwurst says:

That’s a legacy to be proud of Tom. That’s a legacy to pass on to the next generation. I’m a first generaton union member, having had a UBC card is something I’ll always hold dear. I’m a member of the NEA now and wouldn’t trade that for anything our adminstration could offer.

  39. tombaker says:

The topic is Solis. You can tell the crane operator to stop moving the goal posts.

Now, what evidence can you present that Solis was culpable in her husband’s business affairs?

    And really, $6,400 for a 16-year period?

Good for Hilda. And Hilda will be good for the USA.

Unions make our workplaces safe and give workers dignity. That’s why the right hates them so, nothing must stand in the way of the Empire!

  44. Realness says:

Mr. Phiby’s whole point seems to be to prove that the Democratic party isn’t perfect. No ones is arguing that. There are centrists, there are progressives, and there are out and out conservatives masquerading as Democrats.

This blog is progressive- scrutinizes the actions of both the GOP AND Democrats.

Mr. Philby contributes nothing to the blog or it’s discussion in the comments forum, other than the usual conservative projections of mindless occultism and partisanship.

Of course all here know (or maybe should) that there has already been much to criticize Obama and his administration for. What Mr. Philby, in his parent’s basement, seems to think is that any fault found with any Democrat is evidence to dismiss the whole party, administration, or anything associated with.

Mr. Philby must know, that lobbying ethics for an administration are new, that Bush had the bar so lowered, that even with ‘asterisked’ reforms, they are amazingly better than the nightmare of the last 8 years.

There’s no substance there. Ignore him and report him for disrupting the discussion of rational citizens.

I’m glad the ridiculous delay is finally over, and that Ms. Solis can get down to business. It will be great to actually have a Pro-Labor Secretary at DOL for a change. Let me add my sincere hope that Ms. Solis looks within the Department of Labor, specifically the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs, as a place where major clean-up needs to take place. I was employed there 8 years – 4 under the Bush Administration with Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, and witnessed this program for injured Federal Employees go from bad to worse. The guidelines of being impartial and non-adversarial went out the window, as more quotas and numeric “standards” were put in place, creating conflicts of interest. An Examiners’ performance evaluations, chance for promotion, and piece of the bonus pie depended on how well they played the “numbers game”. So much energy was focused on reducing the disability rolls, and Examiners already overburdened with huge caseloads, the pressure was great to take shortcuts. I saw this happen often, and tried my best to not work that way, but ran into conflicts with Management when I continued to speak out against adversarial adjudication practices. This was quite a stressful situation, when my own Supervisor would parrot “Deny now, they have their appeal rights.”. I believe Ms. Solis needs to clean up OWCP, from the heads in DC, down to the District and Regional levels, including all Supervisors who enforced and/or encouraged adversarial adjudication procedures. Our Federal Employees deserve better treatment. I realize the Secretary wil have her hands full with many issues, but truly hope improvement finally comes to OWCP, after years of decline.

    Mr. Philby Says:
I remember all who were robbed, beaten, and killed – all to get a fair shake and a 5-day workweek.

Sound like some great reasons to axe the unions to me.

Gee, if it weren’t for those damn unions, then those factories back in the 1800s wouldn’t have had to hire the Pinkerton thugs to commit violence against them, I mean defend the company (please forgive me, Mr. P. for my bias). If it weren’t for those damn unions, children would still have the right to get hurt in the factories, because everyone knows that children don’t mind losing limbs and arms. If it weren’t for those damn unions, workers would not be faking injuries to extort money from the poor, hapless, downtrodden employers who are just trying to be so good to their workers, but cannot because the unions are messing things up. If it weren’t for those damn unions, corporations would voluntarily make their workplaces a worker utopia where everyone would get fair wages and health care and benefits.

    Way to blame the victims…

Philby is a perfect example of a right-wing Republican who is anti-worker. Typically, these anti-worker Republicans will never come right out and state their anti-worker agenda, because even they know how awful it sounds. Rather, they resort to smearing anyone who threatens to stand up for the average American worker.

Oh my GOD did you REALLY type something as BONE ignorant as that? Sure that is the BIG problem. Workers making a good wage. You brainwashed piece of garbage. Keep carrying water for the Rich just like you have been brainwashed to do. You are as useless as sand in ice cream.

  92. EugeneDebs says:

    Mr. Philby Says: 24

I WONDER why you are so stupid and so brainwashed and if you will EVER make a post that is anything but an IQ draining piece of drivel.

    Mr. Philby Says: 57

I can say you are an ignorant moronic hivemind troll. I can say you are a worthless piece of garbage and stupider than most people could imagine. I can say that most people would rather be intimatly aquainted with a pustulant boil than read your ignorant worthless posts. I can say the world would be a better place without you. Can YOU say anything and I mean ANYTHING worthwhile? Do you have to work at being so stupid or does it come naturally.

You are a liar and a fool or completely illiterate. The liberals here criticize Obama quite a bit. My GOD you are ignorant.

I am so overjoyed to hear about Hilda Solis’ confirmation. It is a huge victory, and I’m very happy. I have been thinking and talking a lot about worker’s rights recently, inspired by the book Thinking Big and the essay on Building Shared Prosperity. The four ideas addressed in the essay are what I’d like to see Solis address: 1. Addressing Key Roots of Economic Insecurity – healthcare and retirement. 2. Investing in Competitiveness – infrastructure as a way to improve economy. 3. Reconnecting Pay and Productivity – unions, labor dept. should raise min. wage and 4. Boosting Trade and Prosperity: Home and Abroad – job training at home, stop giving tax breaks to corporations that do business abroad.
