Colorado state senator compares being gay to committing murder.

On the floor of the Colorado state senate on Monday, Republican Sen. Scott Renfroe equated “homosexuality as a sin with murder” during a debate on a bill that would allow same-sex partners of state employees to be covered by health care benefits. “I’m not saying this (homosexuality) is the only sin that’s out there,” said Renfroe. “We have murder. We have all sorts of sin. We have adultery. And we don’t make laws making those legal, and we would never think to make murder legal.” ProgressNow Colorado posted the audio:

Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), said in a statement that Renfroe’s comments were “outrageously offensive” and should “warrant condemnation by all fair-minded people and should be ignored by the Colorado legislature as they move forward in passing overdue protections to state workers.” You can tell Renfroe what you think of his comments here.

Renfroe needs to re-read the Constitution of the United States and how it calls for a separation of church and state. We don’t make murder illegal because it’s a sin. As for adultery…well, I’m not sure why it’s illegal.

I don’t believe that adultery is criminalized in Colorado. Neither is homosexuality. Which means that all pro/anti-gay arguments aside, this person has no idea whatsoever what the laws are in the state that he’s a legislator for.

Actually, it doesn’t. The phrase “separation of church and state” comes from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 that has been cited by the Supreme Court in subsequent decisions interpreting the Establishment Clause and the First Amendment. But it does not actually appear in the Constitution.

Maybe the Colorado state senate floor should install a trapdoor…

OK… I call shenanigans on this one.

We need someone in the gay community in Colorado to tail this guy and catch him violating some other law in Leviticus, such as eating shellfish or wearing clothing made from mixed fibers.

Leviticus is not a cafeteria where one can choose a verse to beat up gays and yet ignore the other “abominations” prohibited therein.

If Renfroe wants a face-off over scripture, I am ready and waiting.

I wonder if he’s ever worked on a Saturday. That’s not just some minor-league Leviticus fine-print offense, that’s a Ten Commandments “Thou Shalt Not” violation, on par with murder and adultery.

I should hope that Sen. Renfroe has introduced legislation banning the sinful practice of working on the weekend.

Very true. The exact text of the letter is as follows:

    “Gentlemen

The affectionate sentiments of esteem and approbation which you are so good as to express towards me, on behalf of the Danbury Baptist association, give me the highest satisfaction. my duties dictate a faithful and zealous pursuit of the interests of my constituents, & in proportion as they are persuaded of my fidelity to those duties, the discharge of them becomes more and more pleasing.

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

I reciprocate your kind prayers for the protection & blessing of the common father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves & your religious association, assurances of my high respect & esteem.

    Th Jefferson
    Jan. 1. 1802.”

Some highlights of Renfroes career to date…

“During the 2007 legislative session, Renfroe fulfilled a campaign promise to sponsor legislation banning almost all abortions and redefining pregnancy in state law to begin at conception.[23][24] After intense lobbying by both pro-life and pro-choice groups,[25][26] the measure was defeated along party lines in the Senate Judiciary Committee.[27][28]”

“Renfroe was among Republican legislators who opposed revising statewide sex education standards to include information about birth control and sexually transmitted diseases; he unsuccessfully attempted to amend the legislation to exempt school districts within Weld County.[33] Renfroe also opposed measures to allow members of homosexual couples to adopt each other’s children,[34] and to name John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High” one of Colorado’s state songs.[35]”

so the phrase separation of church and state might not appear in the constitution but this phrase does.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”

a law against gay marriage would absolutely be a law respecting the establishment of religion. a prerequisite for supporting the law would be that you think homosexuality is a sin.

also the separation of church and state has been embraced by the supreme court thus making it part of the law of the land.

i don’t understand the point that is being made by saying the separation of church and state is not in the constitution when all the textual support for the idea is.

no laws respecting the establishment of religion.

no doubt some will say this is not a law establishing religion thus it is not respecting the establishment, but one cannot enforce this law without the establishment of religious beliefs as law. thereby making it unconstitutional.

I could go on and on and on about this idiot’s remarks, his apparent support that anything to be interpreted as a “sin” in the minds of the rabid right should be illegal, and his somewhat sick obsession with sex (and his apparent resentment that other people are getting some). But that has been covered many, many times in similar threads here at TP.

A larger picture I see here is that universal health care would make this issue completely moot. It wouldn’t matter if you were gay or straight — you can get health care. It wouldn’t matter if you were single, married, or partnered — you can get health care. It wouldn’t matter if you had a job or not — you can get health care. And it wouldn’t matter if you had pre-existing conditions — you can get health care.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that people stay in jobs they hate because of the health care issue. Or they stay in bad marriages because of the health care issue. Or they have to fight to be considered a couple with the person they have committed themselves to for life because of the health care issue.

Universal health care can’t come soon enough.

Knowing as we all do now that these GOP minions always act as robots to what their masters say to do, these patterns are easily recognized. They are clearly letting open the floodgates and using the known loonies in the party to speak freely what is always just under the surface in a coordinated press toward this subject. Put this together with the Republican ghoul Sen. Jim Bunning conjecturing as to the imminent death of Justice Ginsburg (he wishfully gives her 9 months). They have said many times they intend to attempt to subvert our republic into a “theocracy” using the Supreme Court. They will not admit to the end-goal of their agenda regarding gay people, which is to make them criminals, round them up and prosecute them. This would be followed shortly by frustration on the part of the law-enforcement because they soon would discover that efforts to “rehabilitate” are met with failure. They would conclude that gays are merely rebellious and stubbornly recidivist. Never to admit to a wrong-headed policy, worse and worse penalties would be applied culminating in death sentences, a suggestion that has been made by more than one of these bigots in various legislatures. Make no mistake, this is not far-fetched. It is a consistent goal they have had for decades. These are NOT isolated crazies spouting off. This is the party speaking clearly as one about a main objective.

Condemning other for who they are doesnt seem to me to fit in Christian values in any way. You can disagree. That is fine. It is silly to think WE have an obligation to see things the way YOU do.

You really think that’s a valid point, don’t you, bud? You seriously haven’t picked up on the spirit in which that little item is used. You might want to reconsider allowing atheists to interpret the Bible for you. ;)

You really are a pompous condescending moron arent you? And STUPID. I mean very stupid. You dont KNOW the spirit it was written in anymore than I do. We know the WORDS. YOU cant read minds NOW much less those of men dead almost 2,000 years you ignorant putz. I get that someone as stupid as you cant imagine actually reading the bible and thinking for themselves because you are obviously too STUPID to think for yourself but it would never even occur to me to have ANYONE interpret the bible for me. Since it says directly that He will put His precepts in my heart. I read the bible and interpret for myself. I get that you are so stupid you only believe what you are TOLD to believe.
