Colorado state senator says HIV testing for pregnant women rewards ‘sexual promiscuity.’

sen09.jpg Today, Colorado State Sen. Dave Schultheis (R) caused outrage by announcing that he would vote against a bill requiring HIV tests for pregnant women because the disease “stems from sexual promiscuity” and he doesn’t think the government should reward “unacceptable behavior.” Schultheis explained his motives before casting the lone vote against the bill:

We do things continually to remove the negative consequences that take place from poor behavior and unacceptable behavior, quite frankly, and I don’t think that’s the role of this body.

As a result of that I finally came to the conclusion I would have to be a no vote on this because this stems from sexual promiscuity for the most part, and I just can’t vote on this bill and I wanted to explain to this body why I was going to be a no vote on this.

    Geeeeez.

With all the testing, probing, prying and sonic assault involved with pregnancy today, one more test that could have a lifelong benefit to mother and child is nothing.

This wacktoid’s rationale is astoundingly absurd.

  19. spencers mom says:

OMFG! What the flock is he even talking about? An AIDS test promotes sexual promiscuity? Doesn’t the fact that the woman is already pregnant sort of indicate that sex has already occured? I’m not implying that it was promiscuity that led to the pregnancy, but other than that happy myth about Jesus’ mother, I don’t recall any other “virgin births” and, as the GOOPers prove over and over, even a monogamous wife is at risk because of her GOOP husband’s behavior.

How is an HIV test a reward?

  58. fletc3her says:

Yes, reward promiscuity with a god damn blood test! I’m sure that the fun of going into the public health clinic and getting stabbed in the arm by a resident doing their community service and then waiting for the phone call which will let them know whether they have contracted an STD or HIV is going to be so much fun that the girls are just going to go out and have sex in order to secure their place in line. If you offer scabies treatments and pap smears then even Dave Schultheis might be able to get laid.

  63. CageyCretin says:

Someone mentioned cases of rape or incest? Well, to a cancervative/repugnican (and, espescially, fundie xian) way of thinking there really are no such events, unless it happens to their family. All other women are strictly to blame for any sexual activity: one of the first thoughts to enter a cancervative or fundie head when hearing of a rape is, “What did she do to cause it?” (even fundie and cancervative women think in this manner). That is how they think, and that is why they do not accept the rape/incest arguments when legitimately presented to them.

Besides, HIV is a curse from gawd, and only sinners get it, because gawd protects the righteous. Gays and sinners get aids, and no one else (in fundie repug land, anyway — where there is no rape, only overly suggestive and promiscuous women…. which seems more like a fantasy for the partiarchial christo-bots).

When the stupid reaches a certain level, these idiots lose my compassion — I would NOT be sorry to hear of something ironic happening to these hateful, small-minded, closeted, toe-tapping theocratic twits.

    “American Taliban” indeed….

  64. Tweedster says:

Hold on here…receiving a test to determine whether or not a woman, as a mother, has HIV and a likelihood of transmitting the virus to their unborn child “rewards” negative behavior?

This guy is completely INSANE. It sounds really unlike someone who most likely is full blown pro-life to want to risk exposing fetuses to a life of full blown AIDS.

    Sick and disgusting.

  65. Tweedster says:

Here’s a quote from this morons webpage:

“Tolerance is a virtue of a man without convictions.” — G. K. Chesterton

Seriously, this guy is a shithead.

  66. Tweedster says:

I just e-mailed this clown the following:

    Dear Senator Schultheis,

In casting the lone vote against SB 179 you have violated your own purported pro-life principles as laid out on your own website. I quote:

“If unborn children are indeed unique human beings, they deserve the full protection of the law. The issue is not the rights of the mothers but rather the humanity of the children. If these children are indeed human before birth, then their right to life outweighs their mothers’ right to choose.”

By voting against HIV tests for pregnant mothers, you are exposing innocent unborn children to potential HIV infection while in the womb. It is reprehensible and contradictory to your pro-life stance to punish an innocent unborn child and threaten them with a life potentially fraught with the perils of this terrible disease. As a pro-life representative of the 9th District of Colorado you have failed this cause tremendously with your short-sighted and callous vote.

To view an HIV test as a reward for the “promiscuous behavior” of the mother totally ignores the potential impact on the unborn child. It is imperative for you to issue an apology concerning your vote in this matter, as it in no way squares with your claim of wishing to protect the sanctity of life.

    Sincerely,

    A concerned citizen

    It is very entertaining.

  69. barrelhse says:

  70. Bastet says:

This state senator implies that only women are promiscuous, and that women, once again, need to be punished for having engaged in sex. Does he not care for women who are faithful lovers but given HIV by their unfaithful, male, partners?? Evidently, once again, EVE gets the blame for everything.

By his logic, pregnancy testing, in and of itself, would reward the ‘unacceptable behavior’ of promiscuity, and chest xrays would promote smoking….

  71. dbadass says:

You can tell just by looking at him that this fellow lacks “skills”.

  72. RMcD says:

The Republicans have now, and always have had, a strong “Puritan” streak – and we all know what happens to folks who are sexually repressed… This colors everything they do – the whole reason they were in such a snit over Bill Clinton and Monica was because there were no women (unpaid ones at least…) who were interested in having sex, especially oral sex, with them. Look at them – a big bunch of overfed, overloud, underintelligent, smarmy guys with absolutely NO sex appeal, no charisma. Then you had Clinton, smart, sexy, extra charisma – I was at a book signing of his once and I am telling you, there was a palpable aura in the building, and there were even a couple of 65-70ish women in the ladies room crying about how much they loved him! Of course, this is what the Repubs, with their Paula Jones thing, never got – Clinton TALKED women into sex; he certainly never had to “force” them, which was why the Jones thing was not believable. Anyhow, imagine some young girl coming to DC to “get her kneepads” with Rush, or with Cheney, or with Trent Lott or any of those guys – UGH. NOT likely, but of course, that was Monica’s plan (get her Presidential kneepads), and the R’s just couldn’t take it that he had so many female options and they had none. After all, they are the Entitled Rulers of the Universe and he was just a Rhodes Scholar with a poor single mother. So, they paid Ken Starr $40 million plus to make up for their own lack of sexual desireability and to punish Clinton for his. Sexual repression + envy = a big waste of taxpayer money!

  73. MapleStreet says:

MAYBE, JUST MAYBE if the bill had been to provide curb-side / drive-up STD testing, there might be some possible shred of connection that it encouraged promiscuity.

But after you’re pregnant, you’re 1) probably not going to be having sex as much and 2) the fact that you have an STD means you can transmit it to your child with all sorts of serious, long-term effects.

  74. teri3157 says:

And if Tedd Haggard gets a woman pregnant that isn’t his wife?
Oh wait, that can’t happen…I’m sorry, he’s not that kind of an ADULTERER; he’s just sort of carries around the Wesson oil.
Oh, so it’s Tedd’s WIFE that caused his “problem” regardless of who, what, where he was sticking it…so it’s OK for the Neanderthal Jackass from Colorado legislature to pass judgment on other people’s lives…see, this is what will happen all over the place if these dominionist get power and start running their play book. This is the exact kind of world they envision.

  75. Trittydi says:

Ultimately this man will have to answer to his voters — but if he were my senator I’d try to fire his ass – not just because of his clearly misogynistic comment – but for his sheer demonstrable stupidity.

    Teh Stupid — it hurts.

  77. JoeyTranchina says:

As sent to State Senator Jennifer Veiga
    jennifer.veiga.senate@state.co.us

Senator Veiga stated: “Sen. Schultheis drew the conclusion that anyone who may have HIV is sexually promiscuous,” said Sen. Jennifer Veiga, a Denver Democrat and the Legislature’s only openly lesbian member. “I find that offensive in the context of this bill and I find it offensive in the context of the gay community.”

    Dear Jennifer:

Good start but that is an inadequate response. This vicious elected imbecile assumes that anyone who is by his definition “sexually promiscuous” DESERVES to die of some terrible disease. It is the same sort of Christian imbecility that Fleming faced after penicillin was found to cure venereal disease. People, like Schultheis, objected to man interfering with God’s punishment for sex…

The fact that this creep would extend that punishment to an unborn baby requires an even more perverted view of primitive theology. I have a different take. I assert that sex is better than Christianity; that believing lies never saved anybody and that if this ignorant, bigoted scum-bag is an embodiment of anything “Christian,” we should protect our children from it. I’m not a Christian, but Christianity seemed kinder when I was a kid. It has sure gone down hill since it got into bed with right-wing politicians.

  79. JoeyTranchina says:

“Tolerance is a virtue of a man without convictions.” — G. K. Chesterton

I actually like the quote from Chesterton on this nitwit’s web page. Anyone who would tolerate this level of ignorance and cruelty in an elected official who represents their state has no sense of values and no convictions worthy of a human being.

The worst thing is that this hysterical nonsense is a response that he thought about; it was not a spur of the moment mistake. A commitment to cruelty, ignorance and evil is deeply ingrained in the character of this grown man. He is a truly perverse and perverted human being. He thought about this and nothing in his heart told him that it is wrong to ignore the health of a baby in order to punish the mother for a “sin” that he imagined she committed. There is something seriously wrong with this man.

I consider James Dobson to be the worst sort of demagogue; a truly power-corrupted and destructive human being. Yet, I would almost bet that James Dobson, himself, would not justify or defend this act of evil. There is no logic in theology so perverse as to willfully and intentionally condemn an unborn child to a life of suffering, disease and early death for a “sin” of its mother. Compared to this self-righteously irrational ugliness, abortion would be a sacrament. State Senator David Schultheis must be senile.
