CPAC audience roars with applause when speaker suggests Obama wasn’t born in U.S.

ThinkProgress is attending the right-wing Conservative Political Action Conference today. Earlier this afternoon, Cliff Kincaid, head of a conservative group Accuracy in Media, introduced Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN). Kincaid suggested that President Obama is a communist, then suggested Obama was not born in the United States — to which the crowd cheered wildly. Watch it:

Despite the fact that it has been thoroughly and repeatedly debunked, radical conservatives continue to peddle the ridiculous myth. Last weekend, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) noted that he had never seen Obama’s birth certificate. Trying to calm the ensuing firestorm, a spokesman for Shelby claimed the senator “was not saying and I’m not saying he (Obama) is or isn’t [a U.S. citizen], he was just saying he hasn’t seen one (a birth certificate).”

    With all due respect, I disagree strongly. If the right revolts, there are a lot of liberal veterans who would gladly and proudly fight them. You might cave, but I certainly won’t.

    What happened to the Republican Party? I know Lee Atwater started the divisiveness with his attack machines, and Rove carried the torch, but I don’t remember this much hatred and out right lies. My mother, r.i.p. loved her republican party, but I think she would be embarrassed if she were alive to witness this horrible behavior. I know it’s a combination of things, like FOX News giving the radical right an on air station, the rise of Limbaugh etc……..

    I am not saying this to be snarky but I see a link between this “I haven’t seen the birth certificate” and the wish to keep hidden the human costs of the occupation of Iraq. Both are “out of sight, out of mind” means of portraying reality which this current bunch of conservatives use to gain and maintain power and control of the political apparatus.

    While admittedly the issue of KIA is much greater than this birth certificate nonsense, both are important for us to highlight and attack, seriously and with respect when appropriate and with full-out snark and disrespect when that is appropriate.

    Too bad for Bobby!

  39. Chris L says:

    I love seeing headlines like this. During the Bush years we had tons to complain about, and many people did. Now that Obama is president the only thing they have is “he wasn’t born in America.” That’s it? I know many repubs were clinging on to this myth up to the last minute during the election. They knew their candidate was no match, so this was all they had to hope for.

  40. Southern Beale says:

    By the way, has anyone seen Bobby Jindal’s birth certificate lately? Just wondering …

  41. misshusseinmolly says:

    I saw a copy of Obama’s birth certificate on his website. I haven’t seen ANY documentation of the births of McCain, Palin, anybody in the Bush family, Cheney, Quayle, Reagan, Ford, Carter, Mondale, Ferraro, Kemp, anybody named Dole, Gingrich, anybody named Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Edwards, Lieberman, Jindal, Romney, Huckabee, or Giuliani. There — have I managed to get everybody who has recently run for (or thinking of running for) POTUS or VPOTUS?

    What does any of this prove? I don’t really need to see the birth certificates of any of these people. I trust that if we ever elect someone constitutionally ineligible to serve as President, the Chief Justice of the SCOTUS will refuse to swear him in.

    No, for CPAC purposes, truth is irrelevant. This is an event where raw meat is thrown at the hungry masses — and these particular masses have been starving lately.

    Eisenhower warned about the military/industrial complex back in the late 50’s. The Republican party glommed onto the idea (mostly because they were the M/I complex).

    For over 40 years they have been playing the fear/panic card. Communism has died off, socialism has become moot since the civilized countries of Europe have integrated ’socialistic’ policies and retained democracy. The Republicans are in a major panic because all their old boogiemen are gone. No evil empires.

    Terrorism is as close as they can come and the past 6 years have shown just how pathetic of a boogie that is. For centuries, the moneyed elite (church and state) have claimed their throne by tossing fake evils to the public. All have been debunked. They want their throne for the money.

    I remember when Arnold Schwarzeneggar was running for Governor of California, there was a fair amount of talk about introducing an amendment that would eliminate the constitutional requirement that the POTUS and VPOTUS be “natural-born” U.S. citizens.

    While I wouldn’t support such an amendment solely to make Arnold eligible, I have come to think there is some value in it just to avoid the kind of petty nitpicking we have seen lately — the rumor that Obama was actually born in Kenya (debunked), the truth that McCain was born in Panama (but to American parents), the fact that George Romney was also born outside the country (Mexico) to American parents, the fact that Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona three years before it became a U.S. state, etc. ALL of which were points employed by the opposition to these candidates to distract from more important issues.

    Should any of this be important? Do we want to hold people accountable for where they were born? I believe that one’s birthplace is totally beyond one’s control. What matters is where does a person choose to live, once he/she reaches adulthood and can make such a decision? To what country does he/she owe his/her allegiance?

    I trust the American people to decide for themselves if a candidate truly has the best interests of the United States at heart, and vote accordingly. The constitutional requirement is not only antiquated, but it adds an unnecessary layer of silliness to our campaigns.

    So these same lunatics on the right, will listen to Rush and his minions say that Obama is going to destroy America, blah, blah, blah, and these dittohead rightards are buying the same piece of swampland from their leaders yet again.

    Obama was born of a US Citizen parent. There is no doubt that he is a US Citizen. However, the question is whether he is a “natural citizen” which is a requirement for holding the office of the Presidency.

    The Director of the Department of Health of Hawaii has issued an Official Statement saying that she has verified that Obama has a birth certificate on file in accordance with Hawaiian law. However, Dr. Funkino did NOT state that Obama was *born* in Hawaii.

    So how can Obama have a birth certificate on file in accordance with Hawaiian state law if he was born outside the USA? Simple, Hawaiian law states that if a foreign born child is adopted in Hawaii (as Obama was by his stepfather) then an amended Hawaiian birth certificate can be issued.

    Thus, Obama can have an official Hawaiian birth certificate on file in Hawaii in accordance with Hawaiian state law, but still have been born abroad.

    So are there enough questions to have Obama produce the original birth certificate that Dr. Funkino stated was on file?

    No tin hats, no sour grapes, no hate. Just wanting the facts and to follow the Constitution.

If anyone has any other reason why a US Senator (Shelby) would try to seed such disinformation (he can look at a photo copy of Obama’s birth certificate at any one of a about a zillion websites, including many conservative ones) that the President isn’t a US citizen, I’m all ears. But at the moment I can’t think of one, other than sedition.

    What’s so scary about this comment is its so plausible given the hate rhetoric and subtle threats employed by the Palin\McCain-ites during the campaign coupled with what we are hearing across the board, right down to the New York Posts cartoon showing a dead monkey shot.

    Remember those lines from the campaign, and right after the election? Things like saying “Obama will learn the lesson of Lincoln”?

    The idea of seeding enough hatred against President Obama until they get some Lee Harvey Oswald types to take it to the next level, just cannot be ignored given the wide array of rhetoric, subtle threats and challenges to his citizenship being made by actual US Senators.

  149. WAYNEBRO says:

    Here. Allow me to drive the final nail in.

    - 10.31.2008 –

    Who is a natural-born citizen?

    Title 8, Section 1401 of the U.S. Code defines those people who are “citizens of the United States at birth:”

    Anyone born inside the United States;

    Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person’s status as a citizen of the tribe;

    Anyone born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.;

    Anyone born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national;

    Anyone born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year;

    Anyone found in the U.S. under the age of 5, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21;

    Anyone born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time);

    A final, historical condition: a person born before 5/24/1934 of an alien father and a U.S. citizen mother who has lived in the U.S.

    Anyone falling into these categories is considered natural-born, and is eligible to run for President or Vice President. These provisions allow the children of military families to be considered natural-born, for example.

    SOURCE: http://www.USConstitution.net

    So even if the republicans were right, they’d still be wrong.

  150. WAYNEBRO says:

    Supreme Court Dismisses Challenge to Obama’s Citizenship

    WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man who says President-elect Barack Obama is ineligible to be president because he was a British subject at birth.

    Allegations raised on the Internet say the birth certificate, showing that Obama was born in Hawaii on Aug. 4, 1961, is a fake.

    But state officials in Hawaii say they checked health department records and have determined there’s no doubt Obama was born in Hawaii.

    The nonpartisan Web site Factcheck.org examined the original document and said it does have a raised seal and the usual evidence of a genuine document.

    In addition, Factcheck.org reproduced an announcement of Obama’s birth, including his parents’ address in Honolulu, that was published in the Honolulu Advertiser on Aug. 13, 1961.

    Republicans and right wingnuts aren’t really so stupid as to believe Obama was actually able to become president in this day and age and not be a natural-born citizen, can they?

    And if you listen carefully, you will notice an important piece of information is left out of every single one of the repubs rantings re: Obama’s citizenship. None of them ever say directly that he isn’t a citizen. Instead, they imply it and egg on the unwashed dregs of our society that cannot think for themselves.

    You right wingnuts that believe Obama isn’t a natural-born citizen are as stupid and illogical as the left wingnuts that believe the government had something to do with 9/11. Well, other than gross negligence, that is. You are embarrassments to logical and intelligent people the world over.

If I were Obama, I would provide my ACTUAL birth certificate to the leaders of the public and the Opposition to get the case closed. Anything less than that including some CNN person waving a piece of paper and saying that he found the certificate on google is the epitome of stupidity. You can fool some people some time, SOME people all the time, but not all the people all the time.

    Yeah, maybe if he posted the actual birth certificate on his website, that might silnce the critics.

    Unless, of course, the critics weren’t interested in proof, but only in perpetuating a myth, no matter how ridiculous it made them look. In that case, I suspect nothing would satisfy them. Ever.

    No, AARP, “far left loon logic” still follows the principles of logic. And logic dictates that a “news” organ that is a right wing propaganda channel would never present a lie that favors the left.

    That would be counterproductive to its mission. I’m sure you’re capable of understanding at least that level of strategic thinking, correct?

    To not answer these charges perpetuates them. Personally, I’m concerned about these radical things the president and congress are doing. I think others should be as well rather than just verbally abuse anyone who tries to warn others. In other words, sleep with one eye open.

    His mother was not old enough at the time of his birth to make him a naturalized citizen , even if he HAD been born in Hawaii.

    He holds dual citizenship in Indonesia .

    ALL 3 of these things make him ineligable for the presidency . The Supreme Court refused to look at one of the many suits that came to them. This does not exonerate him , it only means that they don’t want to touch it with a 10 ft. pole & be “perceived” as having “picked” a president.

    It is CORRECT that the suit ALSO included allegations against McCain’s eligibility!

    Neither of them were eligible to run! So I guess the candidate with the 3rd most votes in each state would be president . I have no idea who that would be. Nader maybe ?

    Obama KNOWS that his is ineliable , as well as those close around him who help cover his tracks. Hillary also knows . How do you think she got the position he gave her? ( Keep your friends close & your enemies closer)

Those who say they are “conservative” are either ignorant of history or just plain not nice, greedy people. Conservatism has an ugly history in this country, the old Soviet Union, and in China where the government is slowly trying to liberlize without ending up with the turmoil of the old conservative red guard violence.
    There are exceptions. A truely great republican president was Gerald Ford (a man whom I never voted for) who had the courage to love his country far more than conservative destructive ideology. He refused to be Reagans running mate. Conservatism isn’t about freedom, its about control based on hatred, violence, and fear. They talk about “freedom through obediance” another name for slavery.

I for one am fed up with the way the republiturds like limbaugh keep spouting their gospel about how wonderful the republiturds are. when the condition of this country bears out the truth about their failed policies. it is high time that we had a president that is not afraid to do something for the good of the country and its citizens, other than making sure your well to do republiturd buddies are taken care of. all in name of trying to insure your party(the republiturds)remain in control. george w. bush and dick cheney should be tried for crimes that they commited against the people of the United States. when will the republiturds in this country stop protecting those who have broken the law.
    the current administration should bring charges against those in the last administration who userped the constitution and violated the law. Join reality please. Extreme Muslim groups have been waging war on U.S. for years. are you all missing your frontal lobes?

    I guess the congress and senate didnt have anything to do with approving either war huh? It was all Bush. Not until election time did the reps. start distancing themselves from their vote yes on wars. But keep living your dream world that a single man is the entire cause of the wars.

    Regarding birth certificates, McCain was also brought to court to dipute his naturalization, ok. Its been brought up for other canidates through out history, no agenda against OB, just an opp to distract. Just as the democrats bring up McCains birth place. It is apparent you are as misinformed as the rest of your shallow thinking secular progressive tax hiking, kool aid drinking Bush blaming idiots. Why don’t you blame the people over spending, buying homes they couldn’t afford, welfare tax dollar sucking, non-working, non tax paying lazy SOB’s or maybe YOU fall into that category, your DUMBOCRAT IDEOLOGY is only going to tax us to death, your beloved NOBAMA has already raised our national debt to 14 TRILLIUON dallars thats with T. As far as your savior admitting he made mistakes that is yet to be seen, and I doubt O has any balls. I suggest you have another pitcher of KOOL-AID and OD on the smooth talking, socialist agenda pushing POTUS. He may be your commander and chief but he certainly is not mine, so good luck with your Bush bashing and blaming the republicans for all this countries problems, but then again it is always easier to blame others for your own percieved issues which is what my impression is of most of the democratic left wing liberal agenda morons do. Place the blame where it belongs, the overall govt. that is taking you for a fool and leading you by the nose where it wants you to go, as for me I’ll stand on the sidelines and watch you march away to your econmic destruction.

  217. 2l84u says:

    dragonldy I would not call 53 million to 48 million a trouncing, you apparently have a skewed idea of what trouncing means, how many people didn’t actually vote because they thought neither was worth a vote, we need an independent to run for president. Neither one of these parties is worth a shit, but to blame one party for all this nations ills is narrow minded and shallow thinking.

  218. 2l84u says:

    soilyjohn your supposed facts are just as skewed as your ideology, I’ll work hard pay my bills and outrageous taxes so that you can sit at home and Bash Bush and republicans while sucking off the govt. tit so your savior can tax the hardworking americans and small business owners. O has done nothing but spend our childrens and grand childrens future, how pathetic.

  219. Buckwheat19 says:

    Don’t dismiss this so fast. I used to think this was just a bunch of wackos who didn’t want a mixed raced President in office, but the more I have dug into this it has become clear that President Obama is hiding something. What it is, we don’t know, but if did not have something to hide he would be forthright with us. There are just far too many questions and irregularities to dismiss the idea that there is not something amiss here.

  220. CHADER says:

    Did anyone see the Matt Lowrey (Spelled wrong) interview with Obama? He asked to see his super famous phone…Obama said..sorry I didnt bring it very sincerely and apologetically and then his phone rang in his pocket and he just laughed…rather embarrassedly…why lie about such a simple thing…did anyone research how he said that god doesnt belong in our pledge, government etc. This country was founded by all religous men that believed you could be whatever religion you want away from prosecution..did anyone research that Obama and his wife in there early years were part of flag burning protesting…anyone who is goog at googling please verify…it’s there…I am part of the FPEA (homeschool education group) and they had tons of info regarding it…their utubes with video were constantly removed..I am not a zealous person but I think he does hide stuff and his favorite color is plaid…alot of people are throwing out so much trash I was not even sure I wanted to mention it..but I know there are intelligent people out there that can find this info…We all live int he same country…we all need to know what is true to make the right decisions..by fact not emotion

    Senator Shelby was playing to his base of ignorant racist yokels. If I were Obama I would be tempted to march into his office, show him my original birth certificate and demand that he give a press conference stating that he had now in fact seen it. On the other hand, he should not have to do so, since the matter has been thoroughly vetted. Even if it were to happen, that would not change the minds of the right-wing sceptics, because they do not think like we do. They feel what they feel as a result of their upbringing, religion, peer-pressure, purposeful ignorance, etc., and then “think” about how they feel. They repeat half-cooked rationals that justify their positions, and when backed into a corner, advocate armed rebellion or the old “America, love it or leave it!” cliche.

    They only support the democratic process when it works in their favor. Remember the democratically elected social democrat Salvador Allende in Chile? They still believe they were justified to overthrow him and install Pinochet who tortured thousands of liberals, as well as hundreds of conservatives, to death. In Argentina the death toll from a similar situation was over 50,000. Central America in the 80’s claimed even more lives than that… the list goes on and on. They are now frustrated with the democratic process here at home and it would not be entirely inconceivable that they would attempt some sort of a fascist coup. As a “naturally born” US citizen born in Latin America from US citizens, I gained a different perspective on what these fanatics are capable of. Very few people in the countries I previously mentioned would’ve believed that those things could’ve actually happened there either until after the fact.

    Hopefully we will be able to settle our differences through civil discourse and have faith in the democratic process which has gotten us this far. Liberals had to endure 8 years of Bush-shit, and didn’t rise up even though there was strong evidence of voter fraud and suppresion in 2000 and 2004. Thank God the turn out was overwhelming enough this time to prevent another fraudelent victory. This matter concerning Obama’s citizenship is probably just a feeble attempt at crying foul and playing to their base.

    I can hardly believe the racist comments comparing Obama to a chimp, regardless of the color of the person making the statements. Take a good look at Bush W. and Obama. Color aside, who looks more like a chimp? Give me a break… I’ll end with some words from a famous conservative we should take to heart during these times.

    “Well the eagle’s been flying slow, and the flag’s been flying low, and a lot of people are saying America’s fixing to fall. But speaking just from me, and some people from Tennesee, we got a thing or two to tell you all.’Cause we’re going to stick together, and you can take that to the bank, that’s the cowboys and the hippies, and the rebels and the yanks! You just go and lay your hand on a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and I think you’re going to finally understand.” -Charlie Daniels

    I DON’T GIVE A SHIT WHERE HE WAS BORN. AND ALL THOSE WHINING ABOUT IT, ARE UPSET THAT THEIR PARTY WAS NOT ELECTED BACK INTO THE WHITEHOUSE TO CARRY ON WITH THE SAME FAILED POLICIES THAT HAVE US AS A COUNTRY, RIGHT WHERE WE ARE TODAY. THANK YOU, REPUBLITURDS. AT LEAST NOW WE CAN HAVE FAITH AND HOPE ALL IN THE SAME BREATH. AT LEAST THE MAN WHO IS RUNNING THE SHOW NOW IS NOT AFFRAID TO DO WHAT HE HAS PROPOSED AND DONE. I AM WILLING TO BET THAT EVEN IF HIS POLICIES DON’T WORK, HE WILL HAVE THE BALLS TO ADMIT HE WAS WRONG. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND THE REST OF THE NAZI PARTY TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL LISTEN TO YOUR BULLSHIT PROPAGANDA.

    How the ignorant spout off so. You call Conservatives Nazi’s. You don’t know what a Nazi is. Look at what Obie is dong and compare it to “The Nationalist Socialist Party” of Germany in the 30’s and 40’s. Or you can just look it up and what it was all about. Of course you won’t do this because your full of the hate that the Liberals use to justify what they believe.

    The Conservative’s of this country are not going anywhere. We’re getting stronger by the day with Obies spending spree. Your doing what George Bush (the one you have such great hate for) times ten when it comes to spending. Over 30 Billion a day so far.

    Deal with it. The Nation needs us to bring the country back from the brink of “National Socialism”. You liberals march in Lock Step and praise Obie just as the German People did for Adolf.

    Your all pittiful.

    I was willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt right up until he looked me in the eyes and said that there would be no lobbiest in his admin, then he appointed a lobbiest. He then Put a tax cheat in charge or the IRS. Increased the national debt by 3 trillion dollars while telling us we need to live within our means. 30 billion a day so far.

    He looked me in the eyes and told me there are no Earmarks in the Omnibus package but it turns out there are more than 8 thousand of them both Republican and Democrat.

    He swore he was going to bring the troops home from Iraq but now 50 thousand will remain forever. He promised me change but then appoints a Clinton third term full of Washington Insiders.

    He promised me no new taxes but is planning to raise the gas tax, reduce payments to Medicare, increase the capital gains tax, death tax, tobacco tax, carbon tax and god knows what else.

    This is not change you Liberal Idiots. It’s the same ol’ same ol’. Your just too blinded to see it. Or is it just what you Socialist want.

    These clowns(GOP) just can not get over the facts that (1) they lost the election, trounced would probably be a better description (2) the new president is black (3) the American people are NOT as upset about the new president that they are.

    1) You won but why are you whining about everything.

    2) The fact that he is Black seems to important to liberals only. We Conservative are looking at what he is doing not what color he is.

    3) They will be as soon as they get hit with the bill.

    Hey you won. You don’t need us. Your in control. Go for it. Spending 30 billion a day and counting sounds good to you then you pay for it.

  228. Chowda says:

    Wow, good to see that groupthink is still alive in the small and insulated liberal/progressive world.
    So many lies/distortions here, some thoughts:
    1. Panama, in the canal zone was considered US property.
    If there were any question of Senator McCain’s legitimacy, I’m sure he could produce a birth certificate.

    2. Govenor Palin nor Senator McCain had a parent from another country, nor did either live in another country, nor did either go by any other names, with the exception of Govenor Palin before she was married. Barack Obama is also known as Barry Sotero, even on his school pictures and to fellow classmates.

    3. President Bush, John Kerry, Al Gore, etc. have all released their college transcripts. Barry Sotero/Barack Obama has fought any release of any of his college transcripts, from occidential (where that “Barry” picture was taken) to Harvard, where, according to him and his followers, he was either brilliant of disinterested in the details of things.

    No one but barry sotero/barack obama have attended schools outside the united states, much less countries in turmoil that only let their citizens and no others to attend their schools–indonesia.

    Nor did any others travel to countries–pakistan–that didn’t allow US citizens entry.

    4. If any one here were challenged to produce proof of their citizenship—say, getting a US drivers license, you’d pay your $10 or whatever and get a certified, notarized copy of it.

    Why has obama and his backers spent a few hundred thousand dollars fighting the release of his educational transcripts and the release of his birth certificate?

    He was in hawaii when his grandma died and michelle took over for his campaign speeches (”he get’s it, barack get’s it” whatever that means).

    Lot’s of money being spent in not answering a simple question that the average american can do in 1/2 hour and 10 bucks.

    Oh, and it’s a US Constitutional requirement to be born a US citizen in the US and/or “territories”. That’s why Arnold Schwartzenegger can’t run for pres.

  229. patt says:

    What is all this crap about a birth certificate anyway? Don’t you Americans know that children born to American citizens anywhere in the world are also American citizens???? My daughter was born out of the country, and if you try to question her citizenship, she’ll pop you one right in the nose.
