U.S. troops praise Iraq withdrawal: ‘I don’t think we really had a whole lot of direction.’

Today, President Obama announced the withdrawal of most U.S. troops from Iraq by August 2010 in Camp Lejuene, NC. After Obama’s speech, the AP interviewed several soldiers at the military base. While conservatives have long insisted that service members do not want to withdraw from Iraq, the troops interviewed heaped praise on Obama’s military agenda and the withdrawal timetable:

PETTY OFFICER RYAN JUNKIN: All around pretty good feeling. It’s good that he gave some direction. … Because I don’t think we really had a whole lot of direction with what’s going on. It’s kind of defined now.

SGT. ALDWIN DEL ROSARIO: My biggest take away is that he had dates, and he plans to meet those goals and those dates.

LANCE COPL. CODELL CAMPBELL: Iraq got all our full attention for the past years. A lot of fellow Marines have died trying to make the country better. … Afghanistan is where the real fight is.

Watch it:

“I thought the war would go on and on,” said Pvt. John R. Brown, who watched the President’s speech on Armed Forces Network in Iraq. “I thought it would never end.”

I am so thankful for the sacrifices our troops have made.
Hopefully they will be treated with the respect they have earned.

this “Afghanistan is where the real fight is” propaganda is something he learned to mouth in training.

  3. Bozo The Neoclown says:

    Say what?
there was plenty of direction in iraq:

bush took the whole thing in the wrong direction

there was plenty of american taxpayer’s money flowing in the direction of cheney’s and 43th corporate masters.

  4. wearechange says:

    “thankful for the sacrifices”?
you’re thankful people that died? why?

how is america any better off for this illegal occupation?

with no disrespect to those who lost their lives — and with no disrespect to their family members — there is nothing to be thankful for in our illegal occupation of iraq. it has neither helped the iraqi people nor has it made americans more safe.

  5. Perry logan says:

Because I don’t think we really had a whole lot of direction with what’s going on.

Does that sum up the last eight years, or what? Well said, soldier.

I sensed we might not be in such good hands when I heard about the pallets of cash.

In case you never heard this one–the Bush gang needed cash during the early stages of the occupation. So they shipped pallets of bills to Iraq–for God knows what purpose–whereupon it disappeared. On learning about this, my keen intuition told me there might be something amiss.

  6. Buckie Boy says:

Pvt. John R. Brown, “I thought it would never end.”

If people had not smartened up on what Republicans stand for, the war would have never ended.

But then we do have all the America Hating Reichwingers who voted for an endless war (McCain) idiots, morons, scumbags, bigots, racists, f–k heads to deal with for freaking ever.

  7. rimhotep says:

Thanks to our new President, this abomination will end. It’s accomplished nothing but destruction of both countries (Iraq and US) and OBL was right when he said that he needs do nothing – our misguided war in Iraq will destroy us from the inside out – economically. And he is right.

As for getting out of playing imperialistas and illegally occupying another country, it’s about damn time.

One thing about Barack – if he says it, it will occur.

  8. tombaker says:

    Perry – you nailed it.

The neocons were inspired by “Oceans 12″, and ripped the whole Country off using a geopolitical ruse.

Too bad we’re not smart enough and ballsy enough in sufficient #’s to drag their asses in, put them on trial, and get our $$ back.

  9. rimhotep says:

I find it amusing that the chiefs were surprised when they sat down with Obama and he asked them point blank: What is the goal in Afghanistan? Their jaws dropped and they realized they were dealing with someone capable instead of a neoclown.

I think Odierno and Petraeus need to be replaced though. I believe they are working against Obama at this point and from other blogs today appear to be “doing their own thing”.

Someone needs to knock a few balls around and let them know in no uncertain terms that we have a new commander in chief. If they treasonously continue to work against him or ignore his commands, adios to all of them.

Frankly, I don’t trust anyone who was affiliated with Bushitco. I’d yank their sorry a$$es right out of there now.

On topic, Obama actually has a plan… what a refreshing change from the last eight years.

  22. Hoodathunk says:

It is an established fact that when you ask generals about the why of war they have lots of high minded, patriotic reasons. When you ask the grunts who die in war they invariably say this is stupid and dangerous.

Lets set up a new policy, anyone who thinks war is a good thing gets to go fight it, on the front line. Everybody who says it needs to be done gets a free ticket to the front line.

Then we can see how much wars have to be fought.

I will not believe a syllable of Obama’s promises until I see the troops boarding transports in Basra or Kuwait.

Because there is no chance on earth that there won’t be USer troops still fighting in Iraq in 2020.

Who’s gonna guard and protect those 14 ‘temporary’ bases out in the desert, from which USer aircraft are alraedy flying missions to “project USer Influence in the region.”

    Not gonna be Blackwater…

  26. belac says:

Too bad it’s not the one he campaigned on, is it?

Too bad Bush didn’t stick to that no ‘nation building’ pledge he campaigned on… perhaps then we wouldn’t even need a plan to withdraw troops from Iraq…
And think how much better off we’d be if he’d kept that pledge to protect the Constitution…

  29. Levi the Oracle says:

Uh, Freddy, I don’t mean to sound unpleasant, but when you post a link to a site which is, by its own nomenclature, partisan, you can’t expect anyone to take the message or the messenger seriously. We already know that the site is going to be bias, so it should not be used as evidence.

If you were writing a paper on the topic, you would be expected to cite sources that were not strongly biased. Assuming you have written a paper which requires that you cite sources, what did your teacher do when you cited a bad source? She (or he) would give you a lower grade if your sources sucked. Guess what, everyone here that saw you post that link graded you down.

  79. hanshiro says:

15.freddy Says: Why do people attack the messenger rather than look through partisan goggles? Did you watch the actual video?

Yes, although it was Jindal’s own spokesperson who offered multiple versions of Bobby’s exploits:

A spokeswoman for Bobby Jindal says the Louisiana governor didn’t imply that an anecdote about battling bureaucrats during Katrina directly involved the governor or took place during the heat of a fight to release rescue boats. The spokeswoman, Melissa Sellers, said the story Jindal told in his response to Obama actually took place some days later in Lee’s office — though still in Katrina’s chaotic aftermath — as Lee was “recounting” his frustrations with the bureaucracy to someone else on the telephone.

Yet, here are Jindal’s own words:

During Katrina, I visited Sheriff Harry Lee, a Democrat and a good friend of mine. When I walked into his makeshift office I’d never seen him so angry. He was yelling into the phone: ‘Well, I’m the Sheriff and if you don’t like it you can come and arrest me!’ I asked him: ‘Sheriff, what’s got you so mad?’ He told me that he had put out a call for volunteers to come with their boats to rescue people who were trapped on their rooftops by the floodwaters. The boats were all lined up ready to go – when some bureaucrat showed up and told them they couldn’t go out on the water unless they had proof of insurance and registration. I told him, ‘Sheriff, that’s ridiculous.’ And before I knew it, he was yelling into the phone: ‘Congressman Jindal is here, and he says you can come and arrest him too!’ Harry just told the boaters to ignore the bureaucrats and start rescuing people.

The implication of present moment is there. Jindal is telling a whopper, but that’s not all the spokesperson said:

“It was days later,” Sellers said. “Sheriff Lee was on the phone and the governor came down to visit him. It wasn’t that they were standing right down there with the boats.”..In fact, she said, the conversation took place in the aftermath of the storm, but after the boat incident.

“Bobby and I walked into Harry Lee’s office – he’s yelling on the phone about a decision he’s already made,” Jindal chief of staff Timmy Teepell recalled. “He’s saying, ‘This is a decision I made, and if you don’t like it you can come and arrest me.’”

Teepell said the exchange took place in the week following Katrina, when Jindal visited Jefferson Parish multiple times.

ALSO: Sellers insists that there is no difference between Jindal’s account and the one she and Teepell told, and objects to my characterization of a difference in the immediacy of Jindal’s story and the version that has him listening while Lee recounts something that has already happened.

Cue Twilight Zone theme here….indeed, ‘freddy’s dead.’

Ya mean, someone like Jim Atkisson?

  95. wiley says:

Hey, Maple, I’d say Rumsfeld went out of his way to misdirect the invasion and create conditions to make a real mess of Iraq. All manner of neoconia conspired to wreck the country afterward. From crony appointments who hadn’t a clue what they were doing, to Bremer, to Halliburton—it was all wrong.

  103. Juan C. says:

Still, I think, Afghanistan is not the “right war”. I don’t think those two words can be together in a logical sense. How many US-supported terrorists are under US protection within US territory but no country is invading them?

Again, we don’t like the rules we apply on others.

  104. Jane E. Schneider says:

In the military the only people willing to speak on the record are those that agree with the policy. There are still those that support the Bush policy but they are now quiet just as these people were quiet in the past. That is the nature of military service.
