George Will lashes out at his critics in his Washington Post column today, standing by his inaccurate and misleading column denying climate change from last week. Will complains that “the media-environmental complex” attacks anyone presenting “any expression of skepticism” about global warming.
In his “first presidential directive,” President Obama outlined the structure of his National Security Council, adding “the attorney general, the secretaries of energy and homeland security, and the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations” to the body. Further, he plans to solicit “wide input to NSC meetings, providing for ‘regular’ inclusion of senior trade, economic and science advisers.”
Yesterday, the Senate voted 61-37 to “give the District a voting seat in the House of Representatives.” However, lawmakers also attached language stripping many local gun-control laws, which “complicates the D.C. vote bill’s passage into law, because the legislation will have to be reconciled with a companion bill in the House with no gun provisions that is expected to be approved next week.”
The Obama administration has notified Congress that “Chas Freeman has been appointed chairman of the National Intelligence Council. The right wing, outraged over his views on the Middle East conflict and opposition to the Iraq war, had tried to stop the appointment of Freeman.
Today, the Obama administration plans to rescind the controversial “conscience rule,” which “allows healthcare workers to deny abortion counseling or other family planning services if doing so would violate their moral beliefs.”
The Senate Intelligence Committee is preparing to launch an investigation of the CIA’s interrogation programs under President Bush. Officials said the inquiry was not designed to determine whether CIA officials broke laws but “to do fact-finding in order to learn lessons from the programs.”
Just months after declaring that President Obama “would rather lose a war than lose a campaign,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he supports Obama’s Iraq withdrawal plan. Asked by the Huffington Post whether he would have enacted a similar plan were he president, he replied, “Oh, I’m sure…because that’s what our military and civilian leadership has recommended.”
The Justice Department is preparing to bring terrorism-related charges in a civilian criminal court against Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri, “a man identified as an operative of Al Qaeda who has been held in a military brig” inside the U.S. for more than five years. The Bush administration had “argued that he could be held indefinitely without being charged.”
A group of progressive bloggers “are teaming up with organized labor and MoveOn.org to form a political action committee that will seek to push the Democratic Party further to the left,” recruiting candidates to challenge Blue Dog Democrats. The group, named Accountability Now, “is another step in the evolution of the blogosphere.”
And finally: Yesterday at CPAC, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told RNC chairman Michael Steele that he was “da man” after he concluded his remarks. “Michael Steele!” exclaimed Bachmann, the event moderator. “You be da man! You be da man.”

“the media-environmental complex”
You sure you want to climb up on that thing?
Looks pretty rickety…
February 27th, 2009 at 9:06 am“You be da man! You be da man.”
Would it be wrong to say Bachmann sounds like Steele’s ho?
February 27th, 2009 at 9:07 amApparently the WashPo feels it is unnecessary to fact-check opinion pieces because , well, they’re just opinions, not reports.
But if the opinion is based on lies then the opinion is useless, is it not?
So why pay someone for useless opinions.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:07 amAnd why defend useless opinions based on lies? Why defend a liar?
“You be da man”-Michele Bachmann
“Childrens do learn”-George W. Bush
The dumbing down of America continues. An ignorant populcation is required to drive down taxes and worker pay/benefits. Watch the Blue Dog-Republican coalition.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:07 amPoor George even got that one wrong:

Another wingnut playing the victim card. Let’s explain this again — it’s not the “expression of skepticism” that’s getting you attacked, George. It’s the presentation of opinion as fact, the presentation of creative conjecture as scientific proof, and the presentation of right-wing blather as intelligent discourse. C’mon — you’re better than that.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:10 am“You Da Man” is right up there with “off the hook”. Aparently, when America spoke last election, instead of listening, the republican party said “Talk to the hand”.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:11 amToday, the Obama administration plans to rescind the controversial “conscience rule,” which “allows healthcare workers to deny abortion counseling or other family planning services if doing so would violate their moral beliefs.”
Do some of the religious organizations who receive government funds through now-Obama’s faith-based programs, also have pregnancy/abortion counseling programs? How will this affect them?
February 27th, 2009 at 9:13 amLessons learned on CIA interrogation? Let’s hope it’s better than the hapless Katrina LL effort. Frances Townsend jumped on a plane to Saudi Arabia while hospital patients awaited rescue. She and Andy Card hid their e-mails from Congress.
Who leaves out the hospital with the highest death toll? Memorial Medical Center lost 34 patients, 10 from Tenet Health’s MMC and 24 on the LifeCare unit.
Bush’s corporate friends benefited from Fran’s omission. The Carlyle Group purchased LifeCare just weeks before landfall. Jeb Bush landed a lavish Board seat at Tenet Health a year after Townsend unveiled her steaming pile of Lessons Learned report.
Let’s hope the CIA report is performed more competently. What firms did the interrogating? Blackwater (Xe), DynCorp, or Carlyle’s Booz, Allen, Hamilton?
Let’s hope the report is shared, unlike Obama’s UBS tax cheating settlement.

Any resemblance between McCain and a real “maverick” disappeared right after the 2000 campaign. And now he’s apparently ceased to be a person — just a marionette. Thank heavens we didn’t elect him. I wouldn’t want him even if it was my party pulling his strings.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:15 amMan, this CPAC convention is turning out to be the most entertaining thing this year, it’s like a clown convention. And I’m terrified of clowns.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:15 amHowever, lawmakers also attached language stripping many local gun-control laws, which “complicates the D.C. vote bill’s passage into law,
That’s a neat little bit of sabotage, and I;m sure it provides Republicans with general purpose complaint about gun control if the House takes the language out.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:17 am. . . and as George Will sinks slowly in the west . . .
February 27th, 2009 at 9:19 amThe CPAC looks more and more like a Saturday Night Live parody. First we had the cheers for the myth of Obama’s birthplace, then we had laughter for the suggestion that a nuclear bomb should be dropped on Chicago, and now we have Bachmann attempting to go all hip-hop (was this just because she was addressing a black man, and assumed this was the only language he spoke?).
How in the world could anybody do an actual parody of this stuff?

This is way, way past overdue.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:21 amAnd finally: Yesterday at CPAC, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told RNC chairman Michael Steele that he was “da man” after he concluded his remarks. “Michael Steele!” exclaimed Bachmann, the event moderator. “You be da man! You be da man.”
Ah, yes, the typical “conservative” who has “moved beyond race” and is “colorblind” — unlike you hateful racist liberals.
I’m a little stuck, though, on the juxtaposition of “Michele Bachmann” and “moderator”. It seems like a terrible idea, and I can’t connect “Bachmann” with “moderate” or even “modern.” And certainly not “mode.” Maybe I just need more coffee.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:21 amToday, the Obama administration plans to rescind the controversial “conscience rule,” which “allows healthcare workers to deny abortion counseling or other family planning services if doing so would violate their moral beliefs.”
Good, we are not talking about a decision the health care worker makes, we are talking about the decision someone else makes. They need to make an informed one, not one made for them because they didn’t have enough information to make one themselves.

Funny Israel’s 2.77 billion in security aid doesn’t fit the rationale:
The budget, according to the text put out Thursday by the Office of Budget Management, “puts the United States on a path to double foreign assistance. By increasing foreign assistance, the United States will reach out to the global community and renew its role as a leader in global development and diplomacy.”
February 27th, 2009 at 9:24 amIf Mr. Will wanted to not be attacked for his opinions, maybe he should try making his point with some facts, instead of lies. If you are going to use someones report to make your point at least quote the report correctly, instead of making things up that the report was supposed to have said.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:26 amFirst two requirements of being a conservative:
1) You must be a consummate liar.
February 27th, 2009 at 9:27 am2) You must NEVER admit that you are wrong.

What makes them think that they have the right to dictate to President Obama who he can appoint to what position? They didn’t care one bit what the Democrats thought about their appointments and for the most part the Democrats let them appoint whomever they wished to their government.
These people just don’t get it. They were totally rejected by the American people in the last election.

Organizers of the new group, called Accountability Now, bristle at the comparison, saying they will not provide an issues-based litmus test for candidates. They say they will mainly support primary challenges when there is clear evidence that a lawmaker is out of step with his constituents.
Still, in a conference call, they spoke in terms of enabling Mr. Obama to pursue liberal policies without fear of losing support from more conservative Democrats in Congress.
“Enabling” isn’t the same as “attempting to push democrats further to the left.“

that, unfortunately, is not true, either. Over 46 percent of voters cast ballots AGAINST Prez.O. That’s just under 60 MILLION ballots (and just think how many more they could have amnufactured if they HADN’T decided to throw the election back in 2007).
The mandate, though important, is actually rather small for all the changes for which Obama said he stood.

Despite the state’s formal commitment not to expand West Bank settlements, a government agency has been promoting plans over the past two years to construct thousands of housing units east of the Green Line, Haaretz has learned.
The plans, which have not yet been approved by the government, were drawn up by the Civil Administration, the government agency responsible for nonmilitary matters in the West Bank. Details of the plans appear in the minutes of the agency’s environmental subcommittee, which were obtained by the B’Tselem organization under the Freedom of Information Act.

But what are they going to do when the facts are there for all to see and the public outcry is for justice? I think that’s what they are banking on. That will give them political cover.
Also, they better be willing to back up their subpoenas with the full authority of the law, otherwise this whole endeavor will be a useless proposition.

The only reason why the military and civilian leadership recommended this plan is because President Obama said that he was taking the troops out now rather than later. If McCain had been president, it would be “man the torpedo’s full speed ahead” when it came to the occupation of Iraq.

I am happy he will finally get his day in court, but I am disappointed that Obama did this. Because what he did was to cut off this case, and the concept of a President being able to determine anyone, anywhere to be an “enemy combatant”, from going to the Supreme Court. This concept needs to be adjudicated and put to rest.
Also, he is not being tried as “an AQ operative”. He is being charged with “giving aid and comfort to the enemy”. That hardly qualifies as being an “AQ operative”.

___________
This was prolly the most complicated election I’ve ever seen… it was part a shoe throw at Botch as he headed out the door, part some of the nastiest national issues (political, economical, social…) you could imagine, and part a referendum on the direction “we” want the country to go in.
The electorate was pushed and pulled and spun in more directions than most of us could keep track of. Lifelong Republicans refused to vote GOOP, no matter what, and voted FOR Obama. Some lifelong Dems refused to vote for a ***gasp*** black man. Some older voters prolly refused to vote, period, and a lot of people prolly voted for the first time because they COULD finally vote for a black man. It was a true fustercluck.
I’d be thinking that slim margin of victory on Obama’s part (ONLY 54% of the vote) was in part due to inherent racism… just a hunch. Also telling is the number of seats Dems took at all levels of govt – Federal, State, and Local.
It was pretty much a rout across the board. To me, that widespread repudiation of GOOPers at ALL levels of govt is as much a mandate for change as Obama’s margin of victory.

Which is why the House might as well leave it in. The stiff gun control laws in the District of Columbia are pretty meaningless anyway, since one can buy firearms in neighboring Maryland or Virginia, and one doesn’t have to go through a metal detector to cross back into DC.
It would be like DC enforcing strict air pollution laws — unless their neighbors did the same, it would have virtually no effect on the quality of their air. Remember, the District is only about 61 square miles big.
If the GOP demands a bone be tossed to them, this is a pretty good one to throw.

If you present an opinion, political or not, in any public forum (teevee, print, et.al.), then you should expect to have that opinion questioned. If it is a sound opinion, then questions to it offer you an opportunity to continue the discussion and offer more proof of the correctness of your position and to disamntle arguments against it. That assumes, however, that you actually HAVE MORE than just an uninformed opinion, or that you are honest in that opinion.

A man who was the third-ranking official in the CIA was sentenced to 37 months in prison yesterday for corrupting the agency’s contracts, the exact punishment sought by prosecutors who portrayed Kyle “Dusty” Foggo as an opportunist who tried to profit from the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Foggo took advantage of the CIA’s response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to steer agency contracts to a California businessman, prosecutors said. Foggo, 54, pleaded guilty in September to a corruption charge involving his relationship with the businessman, a former defense contractor and friend. He is the highest-ranking member of a federal intelligence or law enforcement agency to be convicted of a crime.

_____________________________________________________________
I believe the style guides of most journalism media call for referring to President Obama by title and name at the first mention, and by last name in every reference thereafter in the same article.
It was customary to refer to the President as “Mr.” in all references after the first up through the Nixon administration, but when Ford became President, TIME, Newsweek, and several dailies went with the last-name-only format, and most other print media outlets followed suit.
I haven’t really noticed a departure from this by the MSM since Obama because President. Most print media still say “President Obama” or “President Barack Obama” at first mention, and then “Obama” thereafter.
Broadcast media generally start off a hard news story with “President Obama” and “Obama” thereafter for the rest of the news item. However, if it’s a pundit or panel show, all references tend to be “Obama”, with no mention of “President” anywhere (but I noticed President Bush often got the same treatment).
Yes, there are some people with microphones who will do what they can to diss this President and the Democratic Party (Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, Fox and Friends, etc.), but I believe the mainstream broadcast networks and print media stay true to their style guides for their hard news.

Fairness follies
By Brent Budowsky

I break ranks with many of my Democratic and progressive brothers and sisters who believe the Fairness Doctrine is a road to renaissance for media fairness. It is not.
Memo to President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.): Find progressive Rupert Murdochs and you will change the world.
The Fairness Doctrine follies are a road to nowhere, dooming progressives to table scraps rather than a seat at the big table of media power.
Three cheers for Rupert Murdoch. He had a vision based on his values. He put his money behind it. He knew his customers. He built his business. He made it work. I commend the biography of Murdoch by Michael Wolff and the discussion of his book on C-SPAN this past weekend. Murdoch did it the old-fashioned way. He earned it.
Think about this: America elected a Democratic president, Senate and House by large margins. The president has 3.5 million donors, which is larger than any show on MSNBC. He has more than 15 million active supporters, which is larger than the ratings of almost all Fox News shows put together. The voters who strongly support Obama dwarf the combined ratings of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and all television networks.
And yet: It is only Rupert Murdoch and conservatives who have built and earned, the old-fashioned way, their voice on cable television. Give Rush Limbaugh and Matt Drudge credit. They did not build their audience through government regulation.

February 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pmToday, the Obama administration plans to rescind the controversial “conscience rule,” which “allows healthcare workers to deny abortion counseling or other family planning services if doing so would violate their moral beliefs.”
Oh damn, I so have enjoyed this rule in my daily healthcare provisioning, by telling all of the F UCKNUT republistooges that they can go take a f ucking hike out of my office, since I find their brand of political beliefs to be immoral and disgusting. It cuts both ways you stupid f ucking dicks.

TOTALLY UNTRUE.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:23 pmThey relied on the evil Neo-con cabal to twist the law to allow them to have multiple venues in the same markets, which then allowed them to leverage that ill-gotten position to corner the market. They never got ANYTHING by their own means.
Court rejects Obama bid to stop wiretapping suit
The Obama administration has lost its argument that a potential threat to national security should stop a lawsuit challenging the government’s warrantless wiretapping program.
A federal appeals court in San Francisco on Friday rejected the Justice Department’s request for an emergency stay in a case involving a defunct Islamic charity.
Yet government lawyers signaled they would continue fighting to keep the information secret, setting up a new showdown between the courts and the White House over national security.

February 28th, 2009 at 3:46 pmFrom Federal News Radio:
Six weeks into the term, the White House is not any closer to naming a new deputy director for management and chief management officer. Nancy Killefer withdrew her nomination in January after she ran into tax issues.
Several sources say the White House has rejected at least three potential deputy director for management candidates, and are not close to naming one.
Desenberg says this delay causes concern.
“We are trying to be patient on that but it is getting a little late here,” he says. “I know it has only been 40 days, but we were under the impression that a lot of these people were ready to go in first couple of weeks.”
Desenberg says some lawmakers are considering introducing performance management legislation in the next few weeks to address this issue.
