Eric Cantor Tries To Distance Himself From Rush: ‘I Don’t Think Anyone Wants Anything To Fail’

This morning on ABC’s This Week, host George Stephanopoulos asked House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) whether he subscribes to Rush Limbaugh’s hope that President Obama fails:

STEPHANOPOULOS: So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the President fails is not the Eric Cantor/House Republican approach?

CANTOR: George, absolutely not. I don’t think anyone wants anything to fail right now. We have such challenges. What we need to do is put forth solutions to the problems that real families are facing today.

Watch it:

Limbaugh reiterated his hope that Obama fails last night. But Limbaugh is not alone. In fact, as ThinkProgress has documented, the list of right-wing conservatives who hope Obama fails is growing. Just this week, the following conservatives joined Limbaugh:

Rick Santorum: “Absolutely we hope his policies fail.”

Tom DeLay: Asked whether he wants Obama to fail, DeLay responded, “Well, exactly right. I don’t want this for our nation.”

Michelle Malkin: “Yes, I hope that fails.”

On Friday, Limbaugh conceded, “The dirty little secret…is that every Republican in this country wants Obama to fail, but none of them have the guts to say so; I am willing to say it.” According to Limbaugh, Eric Cantor must be one of those Republicans without the guts to say what he really feels.

Update Chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said on CBS this morning that Limbaugh is the leader and "intellectual force" of the GOP.

Bob Schieffer looked confused as Rahm Emanuel explained how the cow ate the cabbage earmark, then burped it up again.

Between Cantor and Emanuel, the public gets no intellectual honesty. I bet they come together to agree on Israel.

Santorum and DeLay are no longer in office for a reason. The public voted against their brand of heavy handedness and greed.

Why our media shows Rush or Malkin is beyond me. It must be to sell ads or keep their corporate chiefs happy. They don’t enlighten anything.

Just to be clear, Rush Limbaugh was never mentioned by name in either the question or answer of this exchange between Mr. Stephanopoulos and Mr. Cantor. To say that Mr. Cantor distanced himself from Rush might be somewhat accurate — but it’s likely that this only happened because he wasn’t forced to specifically state he disagreed with Mr. Limbaugh.

  10. barfly says:

Cantor is in the Gingrich camp, so it no surprise he’s dissin’ Rush.

  19. Marie says:

The number of traitorous repugs leaping onto the “I hope Obama fails” bandwagon is growing. Cantor hasn’t checked the news this week – when he does, I expect he will join them also.

  20. barfly says:

Rush simply want the GOP to keep trundling along on the Reagan Line, even though they are currently off the tracks. Gingrich wants to lay new track, while Limbaugh thinks they can continue on, even though the tracks are warped, the supports are rotted, and even underwater in some sections. We should encourage them to get the train back on the old tracks, and back on the way to political Hooterville.

So, he is saying that all Republicant’s want our country to fail. Boy, that’s going to play well in Peoria. And, you will notice that Limpballs is back to wanting “Obama to fail”, not his policies.

It’s too bad that all Americans aren’t smart enough to get their news/opinion on the Internet because if they were, they would know just exactly what the Republican’t party stands for. Unfortunately most will read the scripted censored garbage the newspapers and right wing media will put out there as having come from this convention.

  24. Levi the Oracle says:

Republicans seem to be of the mentality that if Republicans run America, then they want it to succeed, and if Democrats run America, then they want it to fail. At least that is what Rush seems to be preaching on behalf of clapping Republicans.

I know that when I was a little boy, I watched football with my father. He was very faithful to his team, but when his team did lose, he was quick to compliment the winning team for some aspect that they did better than the home team, and deserved to win.

For the purpose of this post the team is neither the Democratic team, nor the Republican team but instead the American team. My team is having a rough season right now, but I am not going to boo the new quarterback no matter what the score is. I am going to cheer and wish him well, and when he scores, I am going to cheer even louder, and when he fumbles, I am going to be disappointed, but I will not abandon my team.

That is what Rush says the Republican Party is all about. They only want the American team to win if their favorite players are on the field. In my opinion, that shows terrible sportsmanship, and since we are talking about our nation, is treasonous.

They are having a fight to choose a new team captain, if you don’t mind a continuation of the sports analogy. Newt has a much more dangerous mission, and with an exponentailly larger payout: the presidency. Rush is capable of monkeywrenching, and little else. And as his failed primary-voting plan showed, he’s not even very good at that.

  32. Hoodathunk says:

This Monday Night Football mentality is truly screwing things up. The Republicans view it like a big game and if they ‘win’ they go to the Super Bowl. A modern day version of Nero fiddling while Rome burns only in the Republican case its more like Gonzo fiddles while George Burns.

  33. Levi the Oracle says:

The Republican Party has been marching towards fascism since the Regan years. At first it was just harmless political enthusiasm, but along the way it became an “at any cost” proposition.

We have a lot better concept of the cost now, and we use the word trillion a lot more lately. This, however, has not slowed the progression of the Republican party towards fascism, in fact, it has accelerated the process.

Republicans are almost to small a minority to filibuster, but once they fall below the filibuster threshold, they will become more desperate. This is what we need to fear; the domestic terrorist enemy within. Republicans are well funded by corporations, they are pro-war and pro-gun militant, and they have their backs up against a wall.

We already know the Republicans are manipulating the media, making up news to spread propaganda. They broadcast their poison across the radio and they own their own cable news channel. They have hired military mercenaries to act outside the confines of the US military and they scare the living hell out of me.

We know Republicans are going to continue to be a regional minority as long as they continue to unswervingly follow their fascist dogma. While this bodes well for the Democratic Party, it may spell civil war for the United States as a minority of fascists attempt to seize power through force.

We already see examples of Republicans acting in a fascist manner regarding the results of elections, specifically Minnesota’s Senatorial election and Bush’s questionable second term result. If they are willing to try to steal elections, they are traitors.

It is our duty, as Americans, to never again allow Republicans to have political power in this nation at any level of government. I just hope we survive their death throes.

  42. hanshiro says:

How odd that Cantor wants to now distance himself when, just barely over a year ago, Cantor started an online petition to “Stand With Rush.”

Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor of Virginia launched [October 2007] an online petition urging conservatives to “Stand With Rush (Limbaugh)” against liberal attacks.

The text of the petition reads:

One failure after another, Washington Democrats have built a record of legislative failure; one disappointment after another, Washington Democrats have failed to deliver results to the people who got them there.

This must be why, just nine months into their tenure, the Democrat-led Congress hit an 11% approval rating; that is the lowest in recorded history. Facing their record of failure, Washington Democrats decided to try and distract, and so they took a man’s words out of context, then they went on the attack.

It is at moments like these when we need to band together as conservatives and fight back. That is exactly what the Red State community and so many other conservatives around the country have been doing.

This issue is bigger than you or me, it is bigger than Rush Limbaugh. With the recent liberal effort to resurrect the “fairness doctrine,” we have to recognize that free speech — conservative free speech is under direct attack. These are issues that speak directly to the core of the modern conservative movement; are we going to allow ourselves to be pushed around by liberal extremists, or are we going to fight back?

I want to send Washington Democrats a message that their attempts to distract aren’t working“ I stand with Rush Limbaugh against liberal attacks.

    Duh.

It is therefore in their political interest to obstruct as much as possible the Obama/Dim agenda (except that, of course, there is really NO “Dim Agenda” that is significantly different from that of the GoPukes). Both USer “parties” –Dims and Pukes alike– are committed to the same goals: more authoritarian/globalist corporatism, more and more intrusive surveillance, more international military adventurism, more taxes; less public service, less individual privacy, lowering domestic expectations.

Now do you mind being played for a fool by the Rush brand ala the Evangelicals and the Bush crew? Just wondering. Oh and when can we talk about this bold thing? Is it some sort of reflection on a lack of a strong self image?

  85. Bobwurst says:

    John Kerry Says:
“Talk is cheap, and so’s your mom.”

Great stuff!! You get an “A” in name calling!! Mommy must be proud of you!!

Reps lost for one reason – the economy, mainly thanks to Gay Boy Barney; Dodd; Clinton!

PS I come here for fun but the sick thing is that you wacked out cowardly libs come here….well, because you just don’t have a life and need attention!

    RUSH RULES!

Awww, did I strike a nerve junior? I think the reason you come here is that you’re John Kerry’s illegitimate son. You’re one of those kids who were born to whores in Saigon during the Vietnam war and you always wondered who your daddy was and you figured it out when you recognized your own horse face on the TV screen during the 04 election.

  86. dbadass says:

  87. Bobwurst says:

    John Kerry Says:
Feels to to be out of my “chell” whatever that is!!

    How old are you?

You use double exclamation points, and bold!!!! how old are you??!?!?!

  88. Bobwurst says:

Looks like junior has run away again. It thought it could come to an old post, fire off a couple of lame zingers and assume that the lack of a response would mean that we’re left speechless by it’s brilliance.

  89. dbadass says:

So for real, how old are you fake John Kerry? Come on my man, it is all about dialogue…

  90. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

I think we should be a bit more empathetic toward the troll named John Kerry. He’s obviously hard-of-reading which is why his posts are so loud and he doesn’t understand what others post.

  91. EugeneDebs says:

    draftedin68 Says:

    Great to see you drafted.

  92. EugeneDebs says:

JK you ignorant cowardly racist piece of garbage. Just go play in traffic with the other special children and leave the adults to the adult conversation. Your racist idiocy sickens me and every other decent American

  93. Bobwurst says:

    John Kerry Says:
    Just mocking you!!

    63. I doubt your age!

The internet equivalent of “get off my lawn! I’m keeping that frizbee!!

  94. Bobwurst says:

Eugene, John Kerry is one of those vietnamese whore babies and he recently discovered that John Kerry is his real dad. He’s hurt that daddy won’t acknowledge him and that’s why he comes here and uses daddy’s name. It’ the only logical answer..

  95. EugeneDebs says:

JK you are stupid. YOU are a racist and a bigot and the maggots would be eating your dead soul IF you had one but you dont. You are ignorant. No decent person could possibly stand your putrid essence. Go away. You are a coward and a punk. You are disgusting. You embarass our entire species you are so pathetic. Take your racist claptrap to FreeRepublicanSewer where it will be appreciated. By the way YOUR mother called and appologized to us for not drowning you at birth. You are the reason ferrets eath their young.

  96. chingebush says:

    Rules Rules!!

WTF does that mean? You need to spit out that anal cyst secretion JK, that stuff is addling the few cells left.

There is absolutely no way in hell that you are 63. I am guessing maybe 17. 20 tops.

  97. EugeneDebs says:

JK you racist moron. The war was won in six weeks. The lies that started it still havent been accounted for and the occupation cost us thousands of American lives trillions of dollars and a few hundred thousand Iraqi lives so Halliburton could get no bid contracts and Exxon could get oil contracts. YOU dont care because you are a coward and a moron and its always party time at YOUR house as long as Americans are dying. You just LOVE to see Americans die. Since lots of Americans DID die that means Bush did good to YOU. Us liberals arent as enamored as YOU are of Americans DYING so we see it differently. You disgusting racist piece of garbage.

  98. hanshiro says:

    117. chingebush Says: JK, There is absolutely no way in hell that you are 63. I am guessing maybe 17. 20 tops.

    And that’s just I.Q.

    Age is roughly….9-(ish)

  99. kasinca says:

Cantor will never be able to deny that the zero votes for the Stimulus had Rush written all over it. Next.

  100. dbadass says:

    Hi John Kerry
The STUFFED SHRIMP RULE. Wanna try one? Come on old man let’s dig in!

  101. katy says:

    i like this picture/graphic: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Business/story?id=6984716&page=1

    with the caption under reading:
The budget battle has begun with Republicans starting to rip apart President Obama’s proposals.

…because we don’t want to report on any of the good things that will happen because of them…

  102. dropdeadcharisma says:

    krystalview Says:

I think they’re are bolder – and more dangerous – than ever. When a member of Congress ( pete sessions )gets away with saying “republicans must be like the Taliban” and refuses to apologize when the local media asks him about, there should be a red-alert-like awareness. We must be even MORE vigilant and active than ever.
    *****
I thought under chimpey’s law an American could be thrown in jail w/o a trial for making statements like this. Why don’t the dems take advantage and lock all these freaks up?!

  103. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

You know, back when Bush was pushing through his economic policies (tax cuts for the rich, deregulation, deregulation, deregulation) I remember a lot of liberals saying that they think that those policies would not be good for this country. And they were right. But NOT ONCE did I ever hear anyone say “I hope Bush’s economic policies fail”. And that was because Democrats knew that if Bush’s economic policies failed, so would this country. And guess what, they were right.

  104. vat694848 says:

Is Cantor the best the GOP can come up with? Stand-up tall Cantor, as you walk through the gates of hell.

  105. Game of Life says:

cantor and limpydic should traverse aboard together. Let’s see how right their message is to others around the world. It should draw crowds twice a large as President Obama’s.

  106. Game of Life says:

    Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

It’s another repugs lie. It’s like (chimpy) stopped playing golf…heckof…I didn’t mean to shoot bucksh…we aren’t going to wiretap citizens…the economy strong…nobody saw it coming…the dog doesn’t bite.

Some silly ignorant troll tried to make the same lame point yesterday…I said prove it. Of course they can’t.

It’s another useless argument from the useless.

Being as stupid as repugs should make their noses bleed.

    Sleazy with a capital cantor.

  107. Desert white trash says:

Accolades to the Republicans who know EVERYTHING about failure. Your sociopathic attitudes of criticism, complaining and condemning will get in the way of those who truly want to be a part of the solution of making our country a better place to live. Just because all you Republicans cannot keep “it” up does not mean that you need to spew your mean spirited desperation on the rest of us struggling to cope in the trail of your waste.

  108. curious says:

Liar, liar. And his wife is a officer in a bank that received billions in bail out. This caricature of a legislator is beyond the pale. Like most Republicans he hopes for failure. He knows if this succeeds, it will be a very long time before another Republican gets that office.

As one of so many Republican obstructionists he does hope for failure. To see a black, Democrat succeed at turning this country around is insupportable to the lost of them. This party of fascists hate the average American. The only thing the love and respect is wealth and power.

  109. impeachy keen says:

    Democrats: “Hope for change.”
    Republicans: “Hope for failure.”

  110. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

And that was because Democrats knew that if Bush’s economic policies failed, so would this country. And guess what, they were right.
    ____________

That’s a good way to put it, Bilbo.

I didn’t want Bush’s policies to fail. I just thought they were hopelessly flawed right from the start and was terrified of the possibilities.

There are times when I TRULY HATE being right.

  111. dropdeadcharisma says:

Find radio stations in your state that carry Limbaugh’s show and file complaints:

  112. nickrhoward says:

    John Kerry Says:

Hell, anyone with half a brain would want a socialist like Brotha O to fail!!

RUSH RULES! ALL LIBS ARE JEALOUS of him cause he can talk WITHOUT using a teleprompter (like the Chicago Community Con Man does)!!

It is so rare that I agree with somebody on the far right…but I do agree that any American that wants Obama to fail right now does have only half a brain.

  113. labman57 says:

Cantor needs to watch himself. The Rushster is all-seeing and all-knowing.

Whatever you do or say, do not make Rush mad at you. Think only happy thoughts about Rush.

Tell Rush, “It’s good that you spew such hatred and vitriol at the President. It’s a good thing that you want him and the nation to fail.”

Tell Rush that he represents all that is good and true in the land. Otherwise, he may wish you into the cornfield.
