Gates: Obama is ‘more analytical’ than Bush.

Today, on NBC’s Meet the Press, host David Gregory asked Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to compare the “styles” and “temperaments” of Presidents Bush and Obama. Gates said Obama is “somewhat more analytical” than Bush, as Obama makes a concerted attempt to hear the views of every player involved in an issue:

GATES: I think that probably President Obama is somewhat more analytical, and he makes sure he hears from everybody in the room on an issue. And if they don’t speak up, he calls on them.

Q: A marked difference from his predecessor?

GATES: President Bush was interested in hearing different points of view but didn’t go out of his way to make sure everybody spoke if they hadn’t spoken up before.

Watch it:

Update On CNN, former Bush counselor Ed Gillespie responded to Gates' comments, saying "of course" Bush listened to everybody. But he acknowledged Gates' key point and tried to explain why Bush didn't call on others. "If they didn't [offer their own view], you know, everybody has their own style. I'm not sure how much benefit you get from pressing someone who didn't want to volunteer something." Watch it:

And those who didn’t speak up kept their jobs. Funny how that worked out.

I’m pretty sure you have Obama’s cabinet confused with a group of your friends.

Obama’s advisors likely have something to say when they’re called to consult with him.

I’m guessing your friends, if they’re anything like you, frequently speak when they have nothing to say.

  8. telestai2 says:

Somewhat more analytical? You might say that. You might also say that President Obama does NOT have to rely upon “talking points” scripted for him by hacks/hackettes; that he does not have to limit himself to answering questions raised by shills and plants; that he can generate intellectual content on his own; that he can use rather than abuse English. . . “How does he differ? Let me count the ways.”

  9. mary says:

Here’s a good WaPo article describing Obama’s daily schedule:

    Obama, Reaching Outside the Bubble

    a snippet from the end:
While Obama eats (dinner), a team of three staff members works to compile his nightly briefing book. It is a weighty packet of government documents, memos, speeches and articles meant to prepare Obama for the next day. “You look at this and you think, ‘Wow, the number of issues that he is working on in depth in a given day is remarkable,’”said Brown, the staff secretary.

Around the time Obama finishes his dinner, a staff member delivers the briefing book to his residence. Its arrival announces the end of the president’s favorite part of the day, drawing him back to his new reality. He usually reads it late into the night, sometimes studying until 1 a.m.

Didn’t Bush go to bed every night at 9pm?

GATES: President Bush was interested in hearing different points of view but didn’t go out of his way to make sure everybody spoke if they hadn’t spoken up before.

I’m sure there were times when people didn’t speak up because Bush said, “It’s decided then, that’s what we’re doing.” And when they did try to say something, they got a short, snappy, “I’m the decider and I say it’s decided.”

I’m also positive that Bush never let facts influence his thinking.

  13. Marie says:

After recently viewing the movie, “W” Gates’ comments were the kindest way to comment on Bush’s style.
The movie did not tell me anything I didn’t already know, but seeing it altogether in a movie which did not blast Bush, but portrayed him as pathetic and in over his head, was very interesting.
Bush is a case of arrested development – he acts and reacts as an adolescent – and he was in the White House at the worst time in out history.

  14. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    boozer Says:

Well you have to like that. If somebody has absolutely nothing to say Obama makes sure he gets heard.

Lesson to be learned here. This is an example of a false premise. The poster is indirectly putting forth the false, unsubstantiated idea that people who had not had a turn to speak yet had “nothing to say”. He then ridicules the idea of wanting to hear what someone who has nothing to say thinks.

People who make statements like this poster’s are usually the ones with “nothing to say”. And they ridicule Obama for listening to such people (even though no one said he does) while completely missing out on the irony that even though they themselves have nothing to say, TP lets them say it.

  15. Marie says:

If someone in the cabinet has nothing to say, what’s he doing in the cabinet?
Of course, everyone has an opinion, and those in the Oval Office meetings have the most important opinions of all. For our troll here to suggest that cabinet personnel are stupefied and need babysitting is insulting – to himself and his own understanding.
Bush didn’t have to ask for everyone’s opinoin because only yes-men were admitted to his cabinet and meetings. He already knew what the echo-chamber had to say: yessir, anything you say, sir, you’re right, sir.

I disagree, Marie. I think for the troll to suggest that cabinet personnel are stupefied and need babysitting is simply a reflection of his understanding of the way that Republicans run government.

  19. pd says:

I’m sure everyone “in the room” has an opinion on what’s being discussed. If not, why are they there? I’m glad Obama doesn’t tolerate meeting trolls who come in, eat the doughnuts and plink away on their Blackberries while others do the heavy lifting. And thank God Obama doesn’t govern by his “gut” as Bush did. We all know where that got us.

Like on those weapons of mass destruction. My gut told me about those. Frequently. Oh, I just passed another one now. Now that was a real killer. Just like Saddam Hussein. And that’s why I invaded Afghanistan. ‘Cuz the Talibani were holdin’ up that gas pipeline. And my gut told me that if a bunch of Saudi’s attacked ‘merica on nine one-one, I should attack Afghanistan.

Besides, when I was comanderer in chief, no one wanted to speak out against my gut anyways, so what’s the point in listenin’?

Can anyone imagine President Obama doing this:
“He loves to cuss, gets a jolly when a mountain biker wipes out trying to keep up with him, and now we’re learning that the first frat boy loves flatulence jokes. A top insider let that slip when explaining why President Bush is paranoid around women, always worried about his behavior. But he’s still a funny, earthy guy who, for example, can’t get enough of fart jokes. He’s also known to cut a few for laughs, especially when greeting new young aides, but forget about getting people to gas about that.”
    http://www.usnews.com/usnews/politics/whispers/articles/060820/28whisplead.htm

Think about that boozer, bush would fart, for his own amusement when greeting new young aides. What does that say about bush? It tells me that he wants everyone to know that he’s in charge. Given that kind of behavior, that level of domination and lack of caring for anyone but himself, why would anyone open themselves up to ridicule by saying anything other that what they think bush wanted to hear?

An Analysis of Stuff Fer Plain Folks by George W. Bush, MBA—published by Random Thoughts Press.

    Economics:

See, without the tax relief package, there would have been a deficit, but there wouldn’t have been the commiserate –not commiserate –the ‘kick’ to our economy that occurred as a result of the tax relief“. –Washington, D.C. Dec. 15, 2000

“The fact that they purchased the machine meant somebody had to make the machine. And when somebody makes a machine, it means there’s jobs at the machine-making place.”–May 27, 2008, in Mesa, Ariz.

And I suspect that what you’ll see, Toby, is there will be a momentum, momentum will be gathered. Houses will begat jobs, jobs will begat houses.” –Gulfport, Miss., Aug. 28, 2006

Government and the Role of the President:

Never again in the halls of Washington, D.C., do I want to have to make explanations that I can’t explain.” –Portland, Oregon, Oct. 31, 2000.

They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it’s some kind of federal program.” — Nov. 2, 2000

“The legislature’s job is to write law. It’s the executive branch’s job to interpret law.” –Austin, Texas, Nov. 22, 2000

    War and Politics in Iraq:

    It’s bad in Iraq. Does that help?“—Washington, D.C., Dec. 7, 2006

I think we are welcomed. But it was not a peaceful welcome.

No question that the enemy has tried to spread sectarian violence. They use violence as a tool to do that.” — Washington, D.C., March 22, 2006

There are some similarities, of course (between Iraq and Vietnam). Death is terrible.” –Tipp City, Ohio, April 19, 2007

  87. Burghman Pitt says:

Clearly Gates is showing his hand when he makes a point about the contrast between Bush and Obama. It must be very refreshing for Gates to be dealing with Obama through the next phase of Iraq and Afghanistan.

  88. wiley says:

It’s a concerted effort because he is working with the staff. Have you never worked with a group Alejandro? Ever been a leader? You work with the personalities in the situation if you want to get the best from people.

  89. osage says:

Not only was/is George W. Bush an intellectual lightweight, he was/is also an emotional and temperamental bully. Bush didn’t CHOOSE to be non-analytical, he was/is too shallow, unperceptive, insecure and arrogant to BE analytical. Not only did Bush lack the intellectual tools to make effective decisions, he was far too lazy, subjective and insecure to second guess his “gut” instincts, which more often then not just happened to coincide with Republican corporate/political interests. Either you accept that Bush was a TERRIBLE president because he was INCOMPETENT and INCAPABLE or because he was consciously making a concerted effort to IGNORE the needs of the majority of Americans in order to serve the political/financial interests of ONLY Republicans. Either he was too STUPID or too CORRUPT….or perhaps he was both.

  90. cd says:

Gates found a nice way of saying W. was a dumbass and he’s glad Obama is now President.

  91. EugeneDebs says:

    Patriot Actor Says:

didn’t go out of his way to make sure everybody spoke if they hadn’t spoken up before.

In other words, Bush wasn’t a freakin baby sitter. It’s not pre-school.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

No in other words Bush is a moron who never cared about other opinions. Obama is NOT a moron and wants to hear from those who disagree in case they have a valid point. When Bush was given the briefing that said Ben Laden was determined to attack IN the US he told the guy that he had covered his ass and spent the rest of the day fishing

  92. wagonjak says:

Does anyone else here notice that every time Gates appears on cable news he looks incredibly uncomfortable and very guilty? He never looks directly in the camera, and like a good player, always tries to walk the fine line between supporting O, which he should, and not sounding like too much of a team player…

Hard to do, but Gates, in his bumbling way, manages it!

  93. EugeneDebs says:

    boozer Says:

And moronic brainwashed cons like YOU are on record showing that you wouldnt KNOW a fact if it stole your car and slept with your rubber ‘wife’

  94. EugeneDebs says:

    boozer Says:

That’s what make these places so fun, they take themselves so seriously.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What makes MORONS like you so fun is you are so stupid you give us a free clown show. It is so amusing to see you be so pathetic while actually believing you are clever.

  95. MapleStreet says:

Obama is more analytical than Bush.

Knowing Bush, that could be considered damning with faint praise.

  96. Verbal says:

This is really a very simple argument and let me clarify it by quoting from the following post on this subject:
    http://www.verbalpaintball.com/2009/03/01/president-obama-more-competent-than-bush-gates-infers/

“Hiring the right person for the job is critical in any company. Hiring the wrong person may not destroy the company, but could destroy your reputation. Hiring a truly incompetent person will cause your clients to question your company’s abilities, your competition to see your vulnerabilities and your company to question your abilities for bringing in someone so wrong.”

George W. Bush couldn’t have been a worse choice for this country at a most crucial time. I remember letting out a long sigh when this homonculus won the election, thinking to myself that, hopefully, he wouldn’t cause too much damage over the course of four years.

Instead, a frightened public elected this guy a second time and damaged our country severely. I believe Obama is the ONLY person for the job now – and I’m hoping for everyone’s sake he can live up to the promise.

At the very least, imagine what the world would be like at this moment with a President John McCain. Thank God we never went there.

  97. Yamunation says:

Seems like Gates didn’t really think Bush was interested in anyone’s opinions but his own, but is just being polite to Bush.

  98. macdak says:

I am still waiting for my Obama bailout package.

  99. macdak says:

Bush did do 2 terms in office. The last Prez that got slammed as much as everyone is doing to Bush was Nixon. Give it time Obama is only 7 weeks in office. He will be in the same situation as the rest before him.

  100. Balmy says:

Yea, King Hussein is a slick talker. A real Snake Oil Salesman is he: Just like his cousin he campaigned for in Kenya under the “change” mantra.

We are getting what we deserve. Ya ain’t seen nuthin yet. Grab your wallets and hang on to your undies. The last slick talker in history that compared to King Hussein was a another snake oiler by the name of Adolph Hitler.

  101. mainone says:

Bush was a down home country type.Did not feel the need for fancy rhetoric.
Obama is a relatively newbie to politics and certainly not experienced enough for the White House …That is why he asks many questions and asks everyone..he has no experience himself to do the job….
So..what do you expect him to do?? if left on his own to make decisions we would be in a much larger mess than when Bush was in office.

  102. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Balmy,

You need to get out more. Like, to a psychiatrist’s office.

  103. Wang111 says:

Please don’t misunderstand me: I like black people.

    Black people are cool!

But now, Obama should use his excellent analytical skills (better than Bush’s) to deal with Bush’s hatred of black people.

Obama should punish Bush for having racially discriminated against black people.

On balance, George W. Bush hates black people (indicated at http://andrewyu-jenwang.blogspot.com/2008/12/andrew-yu-jen-wang-responds-to-stokely.html George W. Bush “doesn’t care about black people”).

    Balmy Says:

Ok that was classic stupidity troll. Ignorant by any standard. Stupid brainwashed idiocy. You are massivly stupid. I hope you can manage to feed yourself with that substandard brain of yours.

  105. nygenxer says:

President Obama is “probably…somewhat more analytical” that George Bush in the same way that Albert Einstein is probably somewhat more intelligent than a lima bean. A dead lima bean. A dead lima bean that’s been stepped on.
