Vanden Huevel rips Rove: ‘It’s laughable for you to talk about fiscal responsibility.’

Today on ABC’s This Week, Karl Rove slammed the cost of President Obama’s new budget. The Nation’s Katrina Vanden Heuvel quickly fired back at Rove’s newly-discovered sense of fiscal responsibility, observing that Rove and President Bush “helped plunge this nation into trillion dollars of debt”:

VANDEN HEUEVEL: But, Mr. Rove –

ROVE: Call me Karl.

VANDEN HEUVEL: It’s laughable for you to talk about fiscal responsibility from someone who helped plunge this nation into trillion dollars of debt, through tax cuts for the very rich and a war we never should have fought. And also starving the beast. Starving government has been a Republican role in terms of government. And, therefore, when George asks why government hasn’t functioned, people have not seen the role of government improving the conditions of their lives for decades.

Watch it:

Pollster Stan Greenberg also chided Rove. “It’s a remarkable lecture considering the performance,” he said.

She rightly tore KKKarl a new one. I applaud her for that because I was seething when I saw him on the panel this morning.

With the body and voice of Porky the Pig, RoverBoy belongs on the Cartoon Channel (or FoxSnooze . . . oh, I guess those are the same thing).

He really had his back up against the wall trying to defend himself and GDumbya for their eight years of criminality and incompetence. Plus that, he kept interrupting her. He is one obnoxious a**hole.

If he has time for the Sunday news programs, why can’t he honor a Congressional subpeona? I guess the Sunday gig pays better.

Katrina is always prepared with facts to back up her arguments. Rove was his usual: bluster and interruption, distortion of facts.
I wrote to TW today to complain about Rove’s appearance.
I suppose the right have so few leaders in the party that they have to resort to has-beens like Rove, Lintball, Gingrich, Delay et al, along with proven-failed neocons who made some appearances last week.

Media chiefs spend too much time fawning over republican politicians and satisfying themselves, when they should be listening to the finally-awake American public and providing them with what they need.

  12. dbearton says:

Rove belongs in jail; with the traitor, war criminals Bush and Cheney! Why is Rove on TV, rather then behind bars? The American people better speak up or there will be no American restoration, only more crimes from this gang of liars and thieves. Allow these criminals to run free and you get more RepubliCon crimes.

Hurricane Katrina! So Karl was behind leaving the hospital with the highest death toll from the Lessons Learned report. George W. omitted the Carlyle Group’s LifeCare Hospitals and their 24 deaths. He failed to cite Tenet Healthcare’s 10 more fatalities in Memorial Medical Center. A year later Jeb Bush landed a high dollar board slot at Tenet. Explain that, Mr. Rove and preferrably under oath.

  17. LibertyLover says:

The financial disaster is already there — YOU caused it.

The damage YOU caused necessitates social spending to help the nation recover. It pays for itself, unlike the over-billed fees to Halliburton.

Social spending is cheaper and pays for itself. It’s the best way to be in debt, because the results will cover the balance.

How has the MIC spending paid for itself? It hasn’t — it’s only made the social spending more costly. It’s hands-off and wasteful.

Oh, I would say that most so-called Conservatives totally cheered Bush right along on his spending! But, there were some that have been complaining for years. Here’s William F. Buckley, for example, in July of 2006:

“I think Mr. Bush faces a singular problem best defined, I think, as the absence of effective conservative ideology — with the result that he ended up being very extravagant in domestic spending, extremely tolerant of excesses by Congress,” Buckley says.

People who defend the ‘right’ by saying that Bush wasn’t really a true Conservative are probably feeling defensive I would think.

This is from the Cato Institute (they’re considered Libertarian, right?) from July 2003:

“Conservative” Bush Spends More than “Liberal” Presidents Clinton, Carter

The Bush administration’s newly released budget projections reveal an anticipated budget deficit of $450 billion for the current fiscal year, up another $151 billion since February. Supporters and critics of the administration are tripping over themselves to blame the deficit on tax cuts, the war, and a slow economy. But the fact is we have mounting deficits because George W. Bush is the most gratuitous big spender to occupy the White House since Jimmy Carter. One could say that he has become the “Mother of All Big Spenders.”</em>

What Rove is saying here is simple.

If we didn’t have trillions of dollars of debt and collective minds over the last eight years working to reduce the role of government in improving the lives of Americans just to give in to the demands of big business, we wouldn’t need the trillion dollars in spending.

Hands-on is hell of a lot cheaper than hands on. Keep government effective, and it will be cheaper. We didn’t have to be in this rut.

The ideological fireballs will say “Well, whose name is on the $1 trillion in spending?” The real question is, “Why is this spending necessary and why did it come to this?”

That’s a new figure. haven’t seen anyone else claiming that.

  69. mary says:

But, by 2007 we started to hear things like this:

    Bush: A Born-Again Conservative?

President George W. Bush spent Monday morning cautioning a group of young CEOs about excessive spending. It was clear that his statement was primarily aimed at Congress — a warning that he is serious about vetoing Democratic plans to add $22 billion to next year’s budget for education, health and veterans’ programs. But Bush’s fighting words aren’t just about the current battle over spending — they are as much about his efforts to shape his legacy as a committed fiscal conservative, all prior evidence to the contrary.

I’m sure that the fact that we had a Democratic Congress by then was just a coincidence.

  70. McWars says:

    Fox News Rules Says:

    By tripling the deficit?

Ask Octomom for a multiplication table and you will have the deficit figures from their leadership years.

It’s odd — republicans spent eight years on tax cuts for the wealthy, corporate tax cuts, over-inflated payments to contractors, asking for nearly $200 billion twice a year to pay for the quagmire, tarp money and other money to the corporate boardrooms, all that in addition the Fed Reserve spending.

But when money comes up for We the People to keep this country strong, their defenses fire off.

But the ideological gameboys need a platform to advertise a comeback rather than talk about their failures.

Not to mention the 1.7 Trillion dollar surplus (half of it in cash) that Bill Clinton handed to Bush when he took over.

Yes what they are doing is fear mongering they are blurring the distinction between fissionable material and fissionable material enriched to the point it can be USED as a weapon. They have enough uranium now to make a bomb ONCE they enrich it to around 90% what they have is enriched to about 8% and there is a lot of high tech unhidable steps in between. So they have ENOUGH material they CANT use for a weapon and are still quite a ways away from a weapon and no evidence they are TAKING those intermediate steps.

First of all… there was no specific monies in the stimulus bill for “saving a field mouse”. It’s just another embarrassingly transparent right wing lie.

    http://www.mercurynews.com/peninsula/ci_11696283

Steel, however, said the Washington Times story is incorrect.

“There is no language in the bill that says this money will go to this project,” Steel told the San Jose Mercury News. “There are large pots of money in the bill that go to various agencies. One of those agencies said the salt marsh harvest mouse project is something we’d do if you gave us the money.”

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hamill agreed that funding for the mouse is not in the bill, and said she did not lobby for it to be on any list.

Then where did the $30 million figure come from, if it’s not in the bill? It turns out that $30 million is the total amount that the California Coastal Conservancy, a state agency, recommended more than a month ago to numerous federal agencies, looking for lists of “shovel ready” projects as part of the stimulus bill planning.

Get SOME FACTS into your opinion, fool.

Second… as far as that mouse you’re wetting yourself over. It’s the salt marsh mouse, and it’s considered an endangered species, and just one of dozens, if not hundreds, of plants, animals, birds, fish, etc, etc, that would benefit from the restoration of 16,500 acres of old Cargill salt ponds on the SF Bay, the “largest tidal wetlands restoration project on the west coast.”

This – restoring the salt ponds – is about so much more than just a field mouse. It’s about helping restore and protect the SF Bay, which is also crab fisheries, herring fisheries (MONEY, dumb dumb… MONEY!!! WOO HOO!!!)… water quality, quality of life for over 5 million people who live in the area.

The Bay is also an important stop over for multiple MILLIONS of migrating birds every fall and spring. The Bay is one of the great natural resources of this country and the whole F-in’ world.

    C. The wisdom in saving specific species is lost on those who can’t think beyond one or two moves down the board. Our ecological system is how you eat. Without it, you don’t eat. While you may not see the importance of a specific mouse or insect, the fact is they all play a specific function in the ecological chain, and the disappearance of one can cause a ripple effect that goes all the way to the American farmer, and your dining room table.

    The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Nice rhetorical trap… “MORE” bad debt.

Who said it’s MORE bad debt? Oh… YOU did.

    Its the great lie.

    FACT:

In 2007 only ONE percent of Americans with mortgages were not paying them.

    ONE PERCENT.

NINETY NINE percent of Americans WERE paying their mortgages.

But on the news, you heard staggering default rates that convinced people that practically everyone was defaulting on their mortgages. And currently, over NINETY EIGHT PERCENT of all Americans owning homes are CURRENT on their mortgages.

Once we look at the actual numbers (Courtesy REALTY TRAC) we see that the hype about “TOXIC DEBT” was designed to do one thing and one thing only.

Take the onus for this problem off the heads of the lenders and congress, and place it back on the heads of the American people.

Congress and Bush removed lending oversight when they opened up the Sub Prime markets, which in turn permitted lenders to lend in the sub prime markets and manage their own projected losses in these markets. And naturally they underestimated those losses. Why? So they could lend more money of course.

So they projected losses in the Sub Prime markets not much higher than they projected in the prime markets, and then when the actual increased rates of default in the sub prime markets came in, they found themselves without sufficient capital to cover these losses, just as foreign investors found that the US Mortgage backed securities they were purchasing were actually overvalued as they contained a disproportionate number of sub primes rolled in and packaged as primes.

This isn’t rocket science, although some try to paint it as such. In a nutshell, this wasn’t caused by the American people borrowing outside of their means.

It was caused by lenders, LENDING outside of THEIR means.

A situation made possible thanks to deregulation and the reduction off lender oversight.

I don’t know. But you and other trolls are missing the point. The republican party not only ruined our economy but has taken the rest of the world down with it. They are not content with destroying the standard of living in the US but across the world as well.

Their vision is for every american to live like we work in Florida picking fruit. They have wanted us to be so far in debt that it’s like having to buy our food from the company store. And so we’d be in debt forever, virtual slaves to the ever shrinking right wing fanatics (not the base – the uber rich) who would have us work as slaves while they build palaces.

It’s no joke. And any middle class republican that votes for these bastards needs to wake up before everyone in america rents a company shack and makes 11 cents an hour.

I know it’s sounds crazy, but come back in a few generations and see whats happened if we’re not able to get america back on the right track.

Toxic debt is a lie. There’s always bad debt. Its why lending is a “risk” industry.

In 2006, out of all US mortgages only 0.58 percent were in default.

In 2007, that number more than doubled. To a whopping 1.03 percent.

And in 2008, it came close to doubling again. To 1.84 percent.

Meaning over NINETY EIGHT of all US mortgages, are good.

Those are not my figures. Those are from Realty Trac.

And while everyones focusing on certain sectors, specific markets, and monthly figures, the overall figures provide us with the real picture.

Toxic debt is not our problem. Americans ARE paying their debts, the numbers prove that overwhelmingly.

Lenders like Countrywide didn’t adequately factor in the higher risk of lending in the sub prime markets, and THATS where the problem originated.

Lenders, underestimating losses and thus lending outside of their means.

Don’t let the “CONCERN TROLLS” like X1 (Backup) sell the lie.

This wasn’t us not paying our bills. Americans are not deadbeats. Think I’m wrong? Step outside your front door and look around. Are you neighbors moving out of their homes? Are the foreclosure signs all over the place?

Of course not. Because the foreclosures were over hyped by greedy lenders misrepresenting their losses and congress trying to cover their asses for helping lenders to escape accountability.

And naturally they are trying to place the onus for the problem back onto the heads of the American citizens.

    Don’t let them.

Our eldest will graduate in two months; we’ll have two in college for several years to come — as one leaves, another one begins.

But back to this year’s graduate: He and his classmates nationally will have a more difficult time landing jobs than any year for at least the past 25.

    Why?

Well, Karl Rove would claim it’s because of 9/11 and Katrina. After I’d tell Mr. Rove where to put that claim, I’d point out to him that his miserable efforts of politics-over-country have helped land us in this pitiful economic mess, which is seeing more layoffs than in years. Those lucky enough to still have jobs aren’t in a position to retire.

Instead, we must invest now in the areas most lagging: education, health care, energy, the country’s infrastructure.

[...] it’s clear what is at stake for the Koch oligarch clan and their corporate and political allies – fighting to keep the hundreds of billions in surplus profits they’ve earned thanks to pro-rich economic policies over the past 30 years [...]

So today’s protests show that the corporate war is on, and this is how they’ll fight it: hiding behind “objective” journalists and “grassroots” new media movements. Because in these times, if you want to push for policies that help the super-wealthy, you better do everything you can to make it seem like it’s “the people” who are “spontaneously” fighting your fight. 399. Xisithrus says:

In “Conservatives Betrayed,” Richard Viguerie, credited with being one of the architects of the Reagan Revolution, says George W. Bush has set the stage for the punishment of his party by voters.

Viguerie compares spending by the federal government, adjusted for inflation, during the Clinton years vs. the Bush years. In Clinton’s first term, federal expenditures rose 4.7 percent. In his second term, they rose 3.7 percent. In the first term of the Bush administration, however, spending rose 19.2 percent.

“If ever there was a case for divided government, here it is,” writes Viguerie. “The lesson for many Americans is that today’s Republicans cannot be trusted with the keys to both the executive and legislative branches of the federal government.”

Leave it to Karl – he still thinks the people are in some ‘reality based’ world where what he says is ‘truth’

The USA is becoming a laughable and lawless state, a failed state so to speak, to have a crook, a war criminal and a traitor like Rove walking freely and unapologetic ignoring a Congressional subpoena, talking on TV like he is above the law. If the USA was a serious place this man should be have being hanged for treason a long time ago! Obama said he would restore America’s credibility abroad… well Mr. Oabama, for that to happen you must prosecute or have prosecuted the Bush/Chenney administration officials involved in War Crimes and misdemeanors.
