Yesterday, as ThinkProgress noted, on ABC’s This Week, House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) tried to distance himself from Rush Limbaugh’s now-infamous statement that he hopes President Obama fails:
Q: So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the President fails is not the Eric Cantor/House Republican approach?
CANTOR: George, absolutely not. I don’t think anyone wants anything to fail right now. We have such challenges. What we need to do is put forth solutions to the problems that real families are facing today.
While Cantor seems to be trying to dissociate himself from Limbaugh’s hateful rhetoric today, he has been a vigorous defender of it in the past. In 2007, Cantor rushed to Limbaugh’s side when Limbaugh came under fire for notoriously claiming that U.S. troops who support withdrawal from Iraq are “phony soldiers.” Cantor went as far as to blast an appeal rallying support for Limbaugh:
From: Rep. Eric Cantor, Chief Deputy Republican Whip website@nrcc.org
Date: Oct 4, 2007 2:19 PM
Subject: Rush Needs Your SupportFriends,
One failure after another, Washington Democrats have built a record of legislative failure; one disappointment after another, Washington Democrats have failed to deliver results to the people who got them there. [...]
That’s why I’m encouraging you to click here to “Stand With Rush” and sign this petition. It is at moments like these when we need to band together as conservatives and fight back. [...]
I want to send Washington Democrats a message that their attempts to distract aren’t working – I stand with Rush Limbaugh against liberal attacks.
Rep. Eric Cantor (R – VA)
Chief Deputy Republican Whip
EricCantor.com
P.S. Please remember to Stand With Rush and sign the petition.
The website referenced in his letter, Stand With Rush (www.standwithrush.com), was “paid for and authorized by” Cantor’s congressional campaign, Cantor for Congress.
Recently, Cantor embraced Limbaugh’s suggestion to use the term “porkulus” for the economic recovery bill. Cantor in fact appeared on Limbaugh’s show and said, “Let me tell you something … that’s a great description.” Cantor then told Limbaugh, “Thank goodness you’re there to try and help get the message out.”
ANOTHER Rush thread? The two previous weren’t enough? Who CARES what he says?
March 2nd, 2009 at 2:42 pmSo Cantor is another two-faced republican. What’s newsworthy about that? He’s got the cracked base, with Limbaugh, but the repub money men will be listening to Gingrich.
March 2nd, 2009 at 2:44 pmAAARRRRRGHHHHH! Don’t we as a community have anything better to do than focus resources on this guy? For someone who demonstrates such a weak grasp of ideas–why is he constantly on this blog?! There must be more substantial issues to discuss. I do not care if Cantor said that he stood with Rush in 2007–I care how he is obstructing programs now. Can we not point out the numerous deficiencies in Cantor’s arguments?
March 2nd, 2009 at 2:49 pmThe website referenced in his letter, Stand With Rush (www.standwithrush.com), was “paid for and authorized by” Cantor’s congressional campaign, Cantor for Congress.
Is this legal? Cantor is from Virginia, and Rush lives in Florida, so this was not constituent services at work. I thought campaign money was to be used only for things incidental to a campaign for office. You couldn’t use the money for anything that you would have had to pay for even if you weren’t running for office. Was establishing a website to support someone who isn’t from the District he was running to represent a legal use of campaign funds? I would like to know how.

March 2nd, 2009 at 2:50 pmFLASHBACK: In 2007, Cantor Sent ‘I Stand With Rush’ Petition; Created StandWithRush.com
– - Now Eric can create a new website; BendOverForRush.com.

Read the title bar on the left. “Radical Right-Wing Agenda”. This is one of the things TP is fighting against (see sidebar on the right). Eric Cantor is the Number 3 Republican in the House of Representatives, so what he says matters.
TP is doing us a great service by providing evidence of Cantor’s hypocrisy. So when we talk to our conservative relatives, friends, and co-workers and they quote something Cantor said, we can look at them and say, “Are you sure you want to believe everything this guy says? He is a provable hypocrite.”
Thank you, TP. Keep up the great work.

Then think of this as an Eric Cantor thread. Because, if you read the post carefully, you’ll see it’s more about what Cantor said than it is about what Rush said.

Wayne, that’s an interesting point. It would be beyond poetic if Cantor gets nailed for misuse of funds in support of Rush at the same time he’s attempting to distance himself from that pig-eyed sack of shit. Hope someone looks into this situation.

March 2nd, 2009 at 2:58 pm.
I suppose about now Cantor wishes he signed that petition in pencil…
March 2nd, 2009 at 2:59 pm… NO?
He’ll just deny he ever did such a thing and pretend the intertubes don’t exist…
March 2nd, 2009 at 2:59 pmWell not to defend Cantor, he is a re-puke after all and it`s tough being a HYPOCRITE.
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:01 pmThe more the GOP and the drug addict Limbaugh are tied at the hip, the better.
Member’s of the GOP must be forced to reject or embrace their leader’s hate filled views – and on the record.
They’re either with the drug addict or against him.
No in between.

March 2nd, 2009 at 3:03 pmThe best thing about being a Repbulican is that nobody will call you on your lies or your inconsistancies. You can say “black” at one time, “white” the next day, and nobody will mention your past statements when you say “blue, its always been blue.” As David Gregory says, reporters shouldn’t ask questions like that. They should write “black”, and then “white” and then “blue, its always been blue,” spellcheck it, and then, as Stephen Colbert says, go home to their families.
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:04 pmWhat must it be like to have difficulty anatomically? To kiss Rush’s ass and distance himself at the same time.
It would be much easier on the Republicans if they had a decent moral and political center. One that remained visible and true no matter what. But when you believe in so little and stand for money and power only, surely it must cost you a great deal. What you end up with is no real soul and no real beliefs in much that is not expedient. Cantor can’t help it.
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:04 pmraynman,
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:04 pmOr that the intertubes are influenced by mysterious liberal forces.
Oh goodness, can this get any more comical? There is Cantor trying like hell to pretend he is not against Obama. There is Steele screaming HE is HEAD of the Republican party not Limbaugh. And there is Limbaugh relishing the idea of Republican Congressmen paying his homage. The only that would make this circus complete is if Joe The Plumber announces his run for Congress.
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:04 pmQ: So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the President fails is not the Eric Cantor/House Republican approach?

You guys actually believed him? Rush saids it best!
Limbaugh: “The dirty little secret … is that every Republican in this country wants Obama to fail, but none of them have the guts to say so; I am willing to say it”
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:06 pmThank you TP! All Rush all the time. I can listen to his show and I can read all about him right here.

If you want to call “Look what this fat liar said” as “promotion”, then maybe you’re right. I don’t believe in the stupid idea that all publicity is good publicity. Is OJ Simpson popular now? He’s gotten a lot of publicity for things he’s said.
Rush Limbaugh is a liar, and a fat one at that. Yes, you can listen to his show and you can read about him here. But what you’ll get here that you won’t get from Rush is the truth.
Do you care about what’s actually true? Or does hearing facts seem like bees buzzing in your head?
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:14 pmOh yea. Rush isn’t the leader of the republican party and none of them endorse his foul nonsense.
Sure.
Sure.

March 2nd, 2009 at 3:22 pmMay I suggest that anyone standing with Limbaugh, take the upwind side?
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:22 pmWaitaminnit — before we all start going into compulsive knee-jerking spasms, let’s look at what Eric Cantor really said back then. And now.
First, Rush Limbaugh has gone on record as saying that he “wants” President Obama to fail, and that he “hopes” Obama will fail. There is a BIG difference between that and saying that a person or an entity “is” failing, “has” failed, or “will” fail. Just as there is always a difference between a fervent wish borne out of a fear of success, and a calculated prediction or observation (even if spun). Cantor, in his “stand with Rush” appeal, went with the latter.
And just because Cantor agreed with Limbaugh back then doesn’t mean he can’t disagree with him now on a different issue. The claims Cantor made in 2007 were that Democrats are failing (even though whatever “failures” the Democrats had going on were largely due to obstructionist Republicans) and an opposition to the Fairness Doctrine (a straw man designed to get the rabid right foaming at the mouth). Cantor can still maintain these positions (even though they’re boneheaded) and disagree with Limbaugh about wanting and hoping the president fails.
Don’t get me wrong — Cantor isn’t one of my favorite people. His 2007 statement was pure spin to get votes for Republicans — nothing more. Defending Rush’s “phony soldiers” comment was wrong. Cheering the misnomer of “porkulus” for the stimulus package is purely party-before-country politics. Cantor is no hero in my book.
Cantor has proven himself over and over to be a shill for burnt out neocon ideas. There’s plenty there we can legitimately criticize. But not for disagreeing with Limbaugh on the issue of wishing for economic failure (which is essentially the same as “hoping Obama fails”). This article doesn’t present any actual evidence that Cantor ever publicly agreed with Limbaugh on that particular statement (Cantor may very well PRIVATELY hope Obama fails just to see the Democrats fall on their faces, regardless of the consequences to the country if that happened).
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:23 pmYeah, when everyone is talking about how they got sick eating your cookies I’m sure it will improve your sales of said cookies.

Apparently you do. You were even the first to comment.
No, I don’t. I was hoping that a thread with some substance might appear, and instead it is Rush #3.
I have said it before and I will say it again: What possible purpose do these Rush threads serve? Or even Cantor-Rush threads as Wayne would have it? EVERYONE at TP thinks Rush is a fat bozo – why even bring him up? What does it serve? And even if it is just too much fun to resist, must there be 3 such threads? One crispy creme donut I can maybe see, but three before lunch?
To be clear, Matt, I don’t listen to Rush, don’t care about Rush, don’t understand how it is that he has suddenly forced his way back to center stage when he is just a radio host. He-doesn’t-matter.
March 2nd, 2009 at 3:25 pmI agree that anything from rush isn’t news, but one could refer to him as a leader of a new party. The Failurists.

March 2nd, 2009 at 3:30 pmBaby Newt aka Eric Cantor isn’t doing well in the polls for his re election bid so he’ll do what it takes. Yes Rush is the chosen candidate for Republican President. Now I’m starting to notice that Cantor might just be light in the lofers. Senator Craig covered up his secret by marrying a woman with kids now what’s Eric Cantor hiding? This transparentacy of Obama’s is letting alot of secrets out. Pelosi filed false taxes for 9 years, Feinstein has been getting kick backs by giving her husband US contracts, Hatch is using his foundation to get millions, McConnell and his wife had their own Ponze Scam, Harry Reid is over his head with corrupt Republicans and Lobbyist. Who’s next to be outed? The Media calls the Mexican Govenment corrupt it’s time to look in the mirror.

How many abortions has Rush Limbaugh paid for since his huge body started producing semen?
I’d like to know. I bet more than we can count on both hands and even our toes. This could be why his last girlfriend, Daryl Kagan, went all Christian-beserk!…

__________________________________________________________
I suspect that’s the correct website, but the domain must have changed hands since 2007. I attempted to find the original news stories about this petition (using “the Google”) and every one of them with a link to the petition now links to this toenail fungus site — and I’m sure such a prank couldn’t have been perpetuated by that many different parties all at once, so they must have originally linked to the real thing.
And there seems to be something absolutely ironic (and hilarious) about equating Rush with toenail fungus…
March 2nd, 2009 at 4:21 pmmisshusseinmolly,
You’re probably right. I found an article about Cantor’s e-mail, and the link in the e-mail was to this same toenail fungus website. So it must have changed hands since then. I wonder how much money they paid Cantor for the website name? And I still wonder if it was legal for him to use campaign funds to start it up.
March 2nd, 2009 at 4:45 pmHopefully, thanks to the attrocities of the Republican party, unimaginable just a few years ago, we are well past the political era of the ’sound bite’ such as ‘porkulus’ being an effective counter to pragmatic fiscal planning.

March 2nd, 2009 at 5:58 pmPlease please please, someone needs to find a video clip from the 1980s (Ithink)
Rush had just lost a lot of weight and was trying to get his show back up so he was making the talk show rounds. On David Letterman, Dave asked him if he really believed “all that crap” he said on his radio show. Only Dave can get away with a question like that.
Well, the audience howled, Rush paused, gave a great big smile and said; “Dave, I’m an entertainer, just like you.” Everyone howled even louder.
That video has to be in some vault somewhere.
Please please please. Does anyone know a big shot at NBC or CBS who can try to find that clip? Wouldn’t that clip be great right now?
