Limbaugh misquotes Constitution while arguing Obama policies are ‘bastardization’ of Constitution.

limabugh-smooth.jpgDuring his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday, Rush Limbaugh got some of his loudest applause when he declared that President Obama’s policies represent a “bastardization of the Constitution.” He attempted to prove his devotion to the document by quoting from it:

We love and revere our founding documents, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. [Applause] We believe that the preamble to the Constitution contains an inarguable truth that we are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, among them life. [Applause] Liberty, Freedom. [Applause] And the pursuit of happiness. [Applause] Those of you watching at home may wonder why this is being applauded. We conservatives think all three are under assault. [Applause]

However, it’s is the Declaration of Independence — and not the Constitution — that affirms the equality of all men and man’s inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; the Preamble to the Constitution focuses on establishing “a more perfect Union.” Ironically, after revealing his ignorance of America’s founding documents, Limbaugh told his conservative competition that “the Constitution doesn’t need to be redefined. Conservative intellectuals, the Declaration of Independence does not need to be redefined and neither does conservatism.”

    Unlike you, Mr. Limbaugh, I (and several other posters in this community) have taken an oath to support and defend the very Constitution you so cavalierly and badly misquoted, and I take offense at your comments. You owe our troops in combat, as well as all others who have served, an apology for your ignorant comments.

    In addition, maybe you should spend one of your overpaid hours on radio reading the Constitution to your audience. Don’t interpret it for them, just read it. You’d be surprised at what you’ll find in it.

    simply and clearly provides the “why” for the Constitution’s “what,” “how,” “when,” and “where.”

    OK, what manner of rational laws, policies, and regulations, then, “promote the general Welfare,” say, with respect to the economy? As I wrote elsewhere:

    Assuming you do not favor a might-makes-right / oligarchic / gated community / tribal warlord social structure, you have a choice:

    1. proactive, coherent, commonsensical law and regulation, or;

    2. reactive (and mostly problematic) post-hoc attempts to secure remediative justice via a court system.

    I take it as a given that the difficult work of a free, self-regulating society is never done — Eternal Vigilance being the ongoing price of liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We have much work to do.

    One question we would do well to clarify in political consensus: What, indeed, is the proper ethical function of a “market”? Simply that of an end to itself, a bare-knuckles arena inexorably favoring the rapaciously fleet of mind in winner-take-all, zero sum game acquisitive fashion? Or, is it properly simply a means to the end of economic and social justice (however imperfectly and transiently defined) for all, to the extent practicable? I find it unreflectively naive in the extreme that so many self-described “law-and-order conservatives” reflexively rail against ordinary street crime and call for the most draconian punishments while in the next breath decrying all manner of commercial regulation. We have by now seen in the most glaring detail what mutual “enlightened self-interest” has gotten us in the past decade’s overwhelmingly unregulated financial markets. Envision the likely upshot of similarly deregulated food, pharmaceutical, transportation, and product safety. Can you really argue with a straight face that the mere threat of post hoc judicial sanction will suffice to rein in negligence and outright venal criminality?

    The very notion is absurd a priori.

    Where to start…

    Besides not being in the preamble of the Constitution, even the Declaration of Independence doesn’t say anything, in the portion that Limpballs excerpted, about “Freedom”. That’s because the Founding Fathers knew that there’s a big difference between “liberty” (which requires adherence to a certain set of rules important to a civil society — rules that are set in place by democratic debate and decision-making by the members of that society) and “freedom” (which is generally accepted to mean the ability to do what one wants, unbounded by adherence to any set of rules of governance — which in a civil society is generally known as anarchy).

    So the Rushpublicans at CPAC were not only applauding for this dolt’s complete misidentification of our founding documents — they were also applauding for his support of anarchy as a founding principle of this country. Why do Rushpublicans hate the United States of America?

    If people are under the impression that Rush is the new leader of the Republican Party, it’s probably because actual Republican Members of Congress have treated him that way. Otherwise, why would Rep Phil Gingrey apologize for what he said about Rush? If Rush wasn’t important, actual Republicans in Congress could feel free to say what they want about him. It’s a free country, isn’t it? Maybe not for conservatives.

    I have a good friend who should have died in an accident years ago, but he lived. There was hardly a bone in his body was not broken from the accident, 1/3 of his skull is steel.

    Anyways, he became severely addicted to pain medication. You name it, he had it in his body. He is now clean after years of fighting. He is apolitical, does not give a rat’s *ss about politics.

    And he saw Limbaugh on CNN Saturday while visiting. The first words out of his mouth were “That guy is crankin’ on somethin’. Reminds me of myself back when I was strung out”. He did not know of Limbaugh’s prior drug addiction, but was 100% convinced he was loaded when spewing his lunacy at CPAC.

    As the top poster stated, Limbaugh contradicts himself regularly and his listeners either don’t care or are too daft to realize. I accidentally listen to Limbaugh for about 15 minutes a week (he’s unavoidable in my radio market if you listen to the local radio news), and even in that short amount of time, I hear him contradict himself from day to day. I’m sure that Limbaugh will claim that his was a mere slip of the tongue. In the end it doesn’t matter. He could have stood up there and quoted from Mein Kampf and those fools would still have cheered for him.

    Very interesting post, but I must disagree with your basic premise. It’s not an either/or choice at all. Proactive regulation cannot function without reactive enforcement, and reactive remediation is useless without a proactive legal framework to provide the jurisdictional basis for a lawsuit.

    The liberal/conservative rift isn’t a leaning towards 1 versus 2, it’s all-of-the-above versus none-of-the-above. Remenber – the conservatives who rail against regulation and government intervention (except, of course, when it’s their bank being bailed out) are just as opposed to trial lawyers and “frivolous” lawsuits (except, of course, when it’s their company filing the suit).

At that time he was slurring his words and not making a lot of sense (or less sense than usual). This went on for a few weeks. People were calling and offering him excuses like “Rush, you sound tired” or “Rush, do you have the flu?” and “Rush, we’re worried about you”. Limbaugh was offering all kinds of excuses like the satellite uplink was causing a delay, the call computer was mal-functioning and blah, blah, blah. Anyone with half a brain could tell he was cooked. Soon after that he announced his addiction and rehab vacation. He outright lied to his listeners…. and they didn’t care. I wish I could somehow find archives of those shows.

    Actually, I remember from my civics class is that the great strenght of the consisution are its intentional statment of principles which have to be renewed to fit the current situation – unlike many state constitutions which are highly specific and have to be junked every once in a while.

    I figure there are three possible reasons for Rush Limbaugh misquoting the U.S. Constitution:

    1. Rush really does know the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration, and he just misspoke (a la Joe Biden). OR

    2. Rush honestly believes it’s the Constitution preamble that contains the quote he used because he doesn’t know any better. OR

    3. Rush does know the difference, but he thought that claiming the quote came from the Constitution preamble would add a bit more drama to it, so he lied.

    In other words, it was an honest slipup (1), he’s an idiot (2), or he’s a liar (3).

    If it was an honest slipup, I might be willing to cut him some slack. After all, I make slipups too, and so does practically everybody I know. Then I remember how the rabid right tends to pounce on Joe Biden whenever he misspeaks (even though they KNOW Joe knows FDR never “got on the television”), and I figure criticism is fair game.

We like to joke that Rush is a big, fat, idiot, and while he is big and fat, I don’t believe he, himself, is an idiot. True, he says things that idiots love to hear, but he, himself, is not an idiot.     IMHO, the people in that audience are the type who equate “happiness” with “wealthiness”. So, when their hero, Rush, says that the Constitution guarantees us the right to the pursuit of happiness (it doesn’t), they hear “the pursuit of wealthiness”. They believe they have a Constitutional right to become as wealthy as they want. This “right” appears nowhere in the Constitution.

    But if they wish to claim it’s a right guaranteed under the 9th and 10th Amendments, then they have to agree that the right to have an abortion is supported by those same amendments by the same legal rationale.

    Absolutely correct. The problem isn’t what we think of what Rush says. We already know he’s full of crap. But his listeners and fans in Congress do believe him. I attribute that to the sad truth that they do not operate in the fact-based community. They work in the ideology-based community, and they simply accept their ideology as fact.

    Actually, Cats, Rush suffered from the exact same problem his father had. It didn’t stop his father from serving, but for Rush, it was a way to get out of being shot at in a far away land.

It should be possible to disagree with another poster without being offensive and condescending (and I should point out that watchdog isn’t the only guilty party — even posters whom I normally agree with have been known to take this low road, and need the occasional reminder to be more civil).
