Jonah Goldberg: I want Obama to fail.

jonah32.jpgIn an LA Times op-ed today, right-wing blogger Jonah Goldberg joins the bandwagon of conservatives hoping for President Obama’s failure. Implying that hoping for the country’s failure is a perfectly natural sentiment, Goldberg writes, “The scorpion must sting the frog. The conservative must object to socialized medicine”:

Liberal bloggers and media chin-strokers are aghast at Limbaugh’s statement that he hopes Barack Obama fails.

Well, given what Obama wants to do, I hope he fails too. Of course I want the financial crisis to end — who doesn’t? But Obama’s agenda is much more audacious.

Goldberg adds that he is “dubious” about the criticisms of moderate conservatives like Ross Douthat and David Frum, who argue that the Republican party’s Limbaugh obsession “guarantees that the GOP will become a powerless rump party only for conservative true believers.”

Once again, we see that the Right Wing has only the interests of the Right Wing in mind and cares not one whit for the interests of the country as a whole.

One Nation Under God? Not to the Republicans.

    Party Uber Alles!!

There’s a name for people who want the President of the US to fail: Traitor.

  3. P.D. says:

Jeez! Is that all they have to say? “I want him to fail.” What are their ideas? Do they have a plan to get us out of this mess? My God. These people truly are crazy.

  4. Marie says:

The pundits who want Obama (read, America) to fail are nothing short of traitors. Benedict Arnolds, all.
There is nothing wrong with expressing their disagreement with the administration – Democrats did that for years during the Bush reign – but to call for failure, to wish for failure, is shameful and disgraceful.
They have been steeped so long in their ideology, that they think only in terms of their party “winning” – they have lost sight of America, the country.
How long does this have to continue before they are made to stop these treasonous outbursts?

  5. hellinabucket says:

And I want Jonah to shut up. Looks like we both won’t get our way.

  6. sacomment says:

It’s understandable, if he doesn’t fail it proves that everything they’ve stood for has been wrong.

So…. let them HOPE he fails, but don’t let them actually MAKE him fail. Don’t let them sabotage and scuttle Obama’s efforts. And when he succeeds, it will be apparent that the right-wing way is a silly, obsolete cult.

  7. citizen_pain says:

OK, so, let’s give them this scenario: Republicans successfully mount a Talibanesque insurgency and Obama’s initiatives fail to make progress. It’s election time 2012 (if the planetary alignment doesn’t shift earth’s axis and cause a cataclysmic polar magnetic shift…LOL). What are the republicans going to base their platform on? We helped kill the democrats socialist agenda! Now, elect us and we’ll give MORE tax breaks to millionaires, and deregulate Wall Street!

    Ummm… OK.

They truly are in an echo chamber, a hall of mirrors. They just aren’t grasping the fact that the only people who believe their philosophy is sound are their fellow republicans. Millions upon millions of Americans see through their lies and obfuscations.

I find solace in one thing. Republicans have been consistently on the wrong side of history. We just have to let them whine and cry and moan and complain, get Obama’s initiatives passed, then their party will become irrelevant.

  8. Angry McAngus says:

In one of Robert Altemeyer’s experiments with authoritarians/authoritarian followers, a “World” game that was to last overnight, authoritarians and their followers blew up the planet with a nuclear war within about thirty minutes. They even had time to restart the game afterward, lasting a couple of hours this time.

In that context, it’s not surprising to read asshats like Goldberg hoping for failure. Besides, in a Second Depression, I’m sure Jonah will be just fine, which is all he really cares about. What he fails to consider, perhaps, is in such a scenario, the angry mob need only go to the public library to google his address in the what he assumes to be safe confines of his gated community.

  9. Who Misquoted Today? says:

“The conservative must object to socialized medicine”.

Well, all those elected conservatives in Washington should henceforth renounce their medical coverage provided by the US taxpayers.

  10. SpoxLogic says:

I like the way they phrase it – by trying to say they only want his “policies” to fail.
Well, helloo!! If the policies fail, the country is down the tubes. Even though I didn’t think the Iraq war was a good idea – I didn’t want Bush to fail in Iraq. Why? I knew that failure meant more US military deaths, the possiblity of breaking up Iraq similarly to Yugoslavia and giving Iran a foot hold.
Remember that it was Sadaam who was holding Iraq together and keeping Iran at bay.

  11. Marie says:

They are all bereft of ideas, except for tax cuts for the wealthy. They have no alternative plan, no solution – they only want themselves and their wealthy donors to have greater tax cuts.
It’s all Grover Norquists’ oligarch-plan — less money going into Treasury, more persons needing assistance from federal programs, and the rich making more money on both ends – by owning the corporations who end jobs, who send employees to the unemployment rolls, while continuing to benefit from tax cuts on their wealth.

  12. DRxJ says:

Okay, I have questions for the antagonists (and I know they are here, in numbers recently).
Why was it that if anyone questioned Bush during his tenure, it was considered treasonous?
Now, with out and out blatant statements of hope of failure for the current president, is it NOT consider treasonous?
And, of most importance, why does the right HATE the American people?
Should not their patriotism be questioned?

I patiently await well thought out, intelligent responses to these questions?

  13. Steve Weedflex says:

you have to remember that these people have their future at stake. if obama succeeds there will be no more republican party (they are doing a good job of making sure of that) and therefore there will be no more right wing pundits that anyone gives a shit about. With obama’s success comes the demise of these people who have been preaching for years about doing the opposite of what obama is doing and therefore if he succeeds it will mean that this whole time they were wrong and therefore obsolete.

  14. Dumb Fox the Average Golfer says:

Well, given what Obama wants to do, I hope he fails too. Of course I want the financial crisis to end — who doesn’t? But Obama’s agenda is much more audacious.

What should we call this, the brazen bigotry of high expectations?

It’s like, Obama wants to bring the economic and financial crisis to an end, AND implement other reforms, such as healthcare. And Jonah Mommy-got-me-a-job Goldberg, finds this ambition somehow offensive.

And not to carp on, but remember Chimp’s calling card was to Spread Freedom Wherever He Went. This too was pretty audacious, but back then it gave young Jonah a boner. What changed, White Boy?

  15. hellinabucket says:

So they don’t want him to fail in something like basketball or fatherhood, only in leading the country. I see now.

  16. Red Pill says:

When is this country going to come to grips with the fact that the modern conservative cares nothing for the “general welfare” emphasized in the preamble to the Constitution? This incarnation of conservatism, which would likely turn Edmund Burke’s decaying stomach even now, has so deified self-interest that those who adhere to it haven’t the capacity to recognize moments when a rising tide could truly lift all boats. Monetary self-interest is God, and political self-interest (see: Rush Limbaugh) represents the right’s worldly ideology. Left unchecked, they truly can, unlike liberalism, upend the secular, civil foundations of this nation.

Americans need to reject this solipsistic nihilism. That’s all that remains of conservatism and those who celebrate it.

  17. Daddy-O says:

Rush Limbaugh = Father Charles Coughlin.

    Look it up.

  18. P.D. says:

Remember back in the days after 911? If you even critized Bush, the Feds would be knocking on your door? If you joined an antiwar march, you were watched and monitored by the CIA. Well, where are they now? Are they watching Rush and all these other guys who are stoking the flames of violence? I didn’t think so.

I’m totally bummed that we can’t pull together. What a horrible way to represent you party “I hope the president fails”. I’ve never in my life seen such a display!!
When I read this article, my gut tells me this is going down a very bad road and it’s going to be very unpleasant for all of us. I got the same feeling when we went into Iraq.

  21. mk3872 says:

I would like for all of my middle-of-the-road and liberal friends to remember these days and these quotes coming from leaders of the GOP and consverative movement so that they will never make this same mistake again:

DEMS & REPUBS are NOT the SAME

Sure, they make many of the same mistakes when in power. But Dem leaders at least tried to work with the Bush administration no matter how corrupt or wrong they were.

They at least supported him when he put our American troops in harms way.

These positions and statements from the GOP are unconscionable.

  22. misshusseinmolly says:

Translation: “Obama’s economic strategy has a better chance of success than anything our side did, and this spells disaster for neo-conservatism.”

Everytime one of these water carriers claims they “want”, “wish”, or “hope” President Obama’s plan fails, it tells me they’re all scared out of their minds.

  23. SharksBreath says:

If Rush is there Bin Laden then we are safe.

Besides that I’ve been calling them the American Taliban for awhile.

It seems as though the title fits.

Bin Laden and the Republicans are now in the same boat.

    They want us to fail.

  24. hellinabucket says:

We couldn’t question the “Decider”. That wouldn’t have been unpatriotic. That man had a mandate at 51%. Now that Obama won the election with 53% it’s ok to lash out at every step he takes.

One would think the GOP is acting like a little child that isn’t getting it’s way.

Or, the GOP is the wounded animal trapped in a cage of their own making and we the people are watching it die.

  27. pd says:

All of these bandwagon jumpers are failing to realize one important fact; Limbaugh is not a Conservative. He is a Corporatist. Listen to Limbaugh for any length of time (10 minutes is enough) and you will understand that he hates the little guy (the cause of the crisis) and loves the CEO (obscene bonuses will ensure that “talent” stays loyal). His constant underlying message is, if you’ve got money you are OK, if not, you are the enemy. Limbaugh’s true talent is somehow convincing idiots like this guy Goldberg (and millions of listeners) that he is the opposite of who he is.

  28. DonS says:

“the criticisms of moderate conservatives like Ross Douthat and David Frum, who argue that the Republican party’s Limbaugh obsession”

Let’s get real here. Libaugh is a junky, an opiate addict. If his drug of choice has indeed been “curtailed”, his obsessiveness will metastasize in another area, and “politics” is clearly part of his “drug” (read mood-altering)-seeking behavior. He show no signs of the humility that would characterize someone in “recovery”.

Just my .02 as an addiction counsleor for 28 years.

  29. Danny Noonan says:

As far as Jonah’s columns go this one is actually pretty tame. I accept his seeing a difference between the economy recovering and Obama pushing through major reforms in health care and energy. If Obama gets health care passed and it works as expected, Republicans are never going to be able to kill it. Just like Social Security. Which is why passing it is so important.

  32. misshusseinmolly says:

Here in North Carolina, NCAA basketball is practically a religion (and yes, March Madness is nearly upon us!). There are two very formidable basketball teams here — the University of North Carolina Tarheels and the Duke University Blue Devils. Theirs is a long and intense rivalry, and their fans are — well, fanatical.

Each team has their hard-core group of followers, many of whom claim they always support their team, AND whatever team is playing against the other one. To a Tarheel fan, for example, the defeat of the Blue Devils is critically important. If the Blue Devils make it to the Final Four and the Tarheels don’t, a Tarheel fan will expend all his mental and emotional energy praying for the Blue Devils’ elimination.

This is considered normal in the sports world. After all, victories and losses in sports arenas tend to elevate or depress us temporarily, but they don’t usually impact our economic situation, our standing in the world, or our civil rights.

Yet the right-wingers are treating our current political situation as if it’s a sports championship. They want to see President Obama fail for the same reason the Tarheels want to see the Blue Devils fail. Do they even begin to grasp what the REAL stakes are here?

Not only are they fools, but even fools are starting to recognize them as such.

Oh, stop it. Of course they want him to fail at implementing policies that they object to, in the same sense that we wanted Bush to fail at implementing the right-wing agenda. When you think the president is doing the wrong thing for the country, as we did then and as they do now, you hope he fails to do it.

Most economists say that, yes, this spending is going to accomplish what it sets out to do.

Whining about individual pieces of spending is a smoke screen. As RUC said above, spending for “grapes” goes into someone’s hands, and then gets spent at the supermarket or on a mortgage payment. It doesn’t just get pissed down a rathole in Iraq. It will likely produce new information that will be useful for agriculture (which is still one of the industries in this nation with a net positive trade balance). Maybe it will not, no one really knows.

But just saying “grapes” like it’s a magic word doesn’t make the expenditure wasteful. Only people who don’t care about reality are willing to make such a knee-jerk assumption.

It doesn’t just get pissed down a rathole in Iraq. It will likely produce new information that will be useful for agriculture (which is still one of the industries in this nation with a net positive trade balance). Maybe it will not, no one really knows.

All I’ve found in reference to grapes in the stimulus package has to do with scientific research, which “conservatives” are apparently terrified of. Scientific research in agriculture is responsible for the huge success we’ve had in this country and the rest of the world in terms of food production.

I shouldn’t expect a regressive to have an actual idea. Just keep repeating the mantra “cut taxes, deregulate, Democrat=socialism”. Hell it worked for you in the 80’s and 90’s maybe it’ll be all retro-cool by the time November 2010 comes rolling around. Or maybe America has finally woken up to the fact that the trickling economic ideas of a confused, criminal actor-president were dead wrong, that Republican politicians and pundits gleefully backing Bush for eight years of failed policies and crimes might have consequences or maybe they just realized that Republicans serve no one but themselves and their corporate masters and if left unchecked as they were for many years, they will selfishly bring down our economy for a little more power. Yes, I smell a bright future for the Party of NO as ruled by their rightful leader Rush Limbaugh because you see trolls, whether Obamas plan works or it doesn’t won’t change the fact that the problem was caused by the Republican Party and that every Repub up for re-election in 2010 wholeheartedly supported Bush down the road to failure.

Unlike you and your political Pharisees, however, I am a CHEERFUL GIVER and gladly and proudly want to pay more tax than my neighbors who make less. That is because I recognizize that my success has not been just my own as God has given me intelligence and talent, my community gave me good schools, my society offered me student loans, and my parents offered me love for learning and ambition. Unlike you and others like you, I humbly wish to PAY BACK my obligations for these factors and to pass on those same opportunities to others. So, again, you have no more right to tell me how I SHOULD feel about taxes than you do my faith.

22″The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell,[c] where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25″But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27″He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29″Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30″ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31″He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

Newspapers are hurting all over the country. I grew up with great ones, The Boston Gobe, the New York Times. Then I moved to Los Angeles. The LA Times is touted as a progressive publication, but from someone who used to read it, believe me it isn’t. If what get’s printed in the Times is progressive we’re all in trouble.

The one bright spot in the Times was Robert Scheer. A few years ago the Times discontinued their contract with him and hired these right wing neo con blowhards to take over their opinion section. They’ve got Max Boot and Jonah Goldberg among others. To be kind, it wouldn’t be incorrect to say every opinion they’ve offered on anything at any time has been 100% wrong.

I cancelled my subscription and e-mailed and wrote the Times. I’ve recieved no response. I’ve done it numerous times and recieved nothing. And they wonder why their going down the drain.

People just don’t want lies anymore. I know a few years ago it was patriotic to believe in lies – not any more.

Began reading this thread on my lunch break, and I couldn’t help but respond to the damn grape research BS.

I will never understand conservatives and their nonsensical and irrational attitudes towards some products, foodstuffs, and research. Why would anyone think spending 1.4 million on grape research would be a good idea? Oh, I don’t know, maybe because the grape industry is a multi BILLION dollar PER YEAR industry. (according to Bush’s administration anyway; re. the wine industry – http://www.ita.doc.gov/td/ocg/wine2008.pdf). So, I would say a small investment in research on grapes might be an investment in the continued success of the industry. Perhaps the unnamed research will combat fungal diseases, loss to insects, etc and help sustain the grape industry. If it were corn that the money were allotted to, I bet the right wouldn’t say a word. Corn, wheat, etc are ok. Certainly money for livestock research is ok. But if we are talking about wine, grape juice, jelly, or god forbid, something as liberal as arugula, then that money is wasteful. I hope there is lots of money in the budget for bee research too. We need it. The bee populations are being hit hard by colony collapse disorder, and there is no big biotech company for bees to invest privately in eliminating the problem. So, either the government invests in its own economy and agricultural output, or no one does. In the process, the money for research funds a few jobs and students education. But I would guess money for bee research is also taboo.

Thanks. I’ve been an active church member for all my life. I attended a church affiliated college and took comparative religion classes. I have taught confirmation classes. I have taken a number of Bible studies through my church. And I have read much of the Bible independently. I also rely on Bible search engines a lot because I tend to remember the spiritual content of the Bible, but not the exact words and certainly not the exact book and verse. I am much better at the bigger concepts than the small details!

Even if you accept that recessions can be blamed on whichever president is in office when they begin (like the First bush Recession in ‘01 — sorry — since his dad also preside over a recession, that would make it the Second Bush Recession), you still can’t pin this one on Obama, since economists agree that it began in summer or fall of ‘08.

    It’s Bush’s baby.
