Rep. Kaptur scolds GOP: ‘Democrat Party’ doesn’t exist.

During today’s House Budget Committee hearing, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) repeatedly invoked the “Democrat Party” while questioning Office of Management and Budget director Peter Orszag. Immediately following Hensarling’s time, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) took him to task for using the purposefully-disparaging moniker, reminding him that no such party exists:

I’d like to begin by saying to my colleague from Texas that there isn’t a single member on this side of the aisle that belongs to the “Democrat Party.” We belong to the Democratic Party. So the party you were referring to doesn’t even exist. And I would just appreciate the courtesy when you’re referring to our party, if you’re referring to the Democratic Party, to refer to it as such.

Watch it:

Last week, MSNBC host Chris Matthews took Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) for referring to the “Democrat Congress.” “Do we have to do this every night? Why do people talk like this?” Matthews asked with exasperation, adding, “Let’s just call people what they call themselves.”

The Democratic party could start calling the GOP — the Republican’ts or better yet… the Republiwon’ts.

I doubt that I’d refer to the Republic Party, probably just the Dark Side party.

It’s nice that Democrats are finally beginning to call the other side on their petty childish digs.

It’s just embarrassing that a major political party in the greatest nation on the planet stoops to such infantile gestures.

  6. Purple State says:

This, I believe, is part of the GOP’s attempt to say more nonsense in the same period of time by abbreviating the English language. They realized it wasn’t helping when they started to refer to Mitch McConnell as “McCon”.

Good to see this crap being confronted, for once. HERE, on the blogs, it is fine for us non-office holding bloggers to make fun of names and such. That is fine. Why the fuss?

Seriously, is there some veiled insult in using Democrat instead of Democratic? Aside from the grammatical error, the only possibility I can think of is the ‘rat’ at the end (which was used in republican attack ads in my home state a few years ago).

I’m a lifelong Democrat and am not trolling. I’d appreciate it if someone would fill me in.

If all you’re complaining about is grammar, don’t you think there are more important things upon which to focus? Grammar and usage errors run rampant in the USA. Why should that be a surprise to anyone?

  24. paleolib says:

It is amazing that someone wrote “Democrat Party” on one of Ronnie Reagan’s cue cards, Limprod picked up on it and now the whole crew of mouth breathing frat boys thinks it’s cute. 25. The Dogfather says:

That said — it’s apparent the wingnuts are determined to use their bad grammar as a pejorative, and it’s time to say that Congress isn’t the place for this kind of silliness. I mean, if playground taunts were permitted to frolic freely, what’s to stop anyone from addressing David Vitter as “SINator?”

  40. ralph the wonder llama says:

missmolly, I think the whole “issue” is a reflection of two elements that run deep in the Republican Party today.

One is a disdain for intellectual “elitism” (otherwise known as correct and efficient use of language, science, history, etc.). I think they figure that if they bait a Democrat into correcting their “slip of the tongue”, the Democrat will be the one to look foolish, for focusing on such a minor technicality. I trust they’re wrong about that.

The second is just simple childishness.

  41. a0d7fzz says:

This is really a psychological trait, most common in children and adolescents, but also in adults. People derive a brief “kick” or mental high, by observing another person’s annoyance at what they’ve said/done. I should know – I was an expert at it. It’s a tough habit to break.

The use of “Democrat Party” is a moniker that Republicans determined would be a useful veiled insult, focusing on the “rat” ending. I believe that Lee Atwater came up with this, sometime in the 1980s, before Limbaugh tried making it his own.

The “R” congressman that Rep. Kaptur called out probably did this deliberately, as the “Rs” discuss these matters (using language to demonize or insult) behind closed doors frequently.

OK, one more time — from the top:

Not all words can work as more than one part of speech. Yes, it works for the word “Republican” — as in one can be a Republican, and one can belong to the Republican Party.

Such is not the case for the word “Democrat.” It is only a noun, not both a noun and an adjective. Thus, a Democrat is a member of the Democratic Party.

    – kind of like the word “pleasant.” It’s an adjective. “Pleasure” is the noun. It’s been my pleasure being pleasant to you.

(you got the Orwell reference wrong.)

This whole ‘Democrat Party’ thing is an exercise in what’s called ‘phatic communication.’ Because there isn’t explicit hostile content, it’s hard to object to it (as opposed to ‘Dim-o-Crat’ or ‘Dhimmicrat’) but the act itself is one of aggression.
When I was in school, people used to call me ‘Berno’ (my middle name is Benno). There’s nothing at all demeaning about ‘Berno’ except that it is not my name.It was meant as an insult, and it was.
It really is a schoolyard thing–but it was also a demonstration of their control of the media. They were demonstrating that they were perpetuating this slight, and that the media would never step in to correct them. Ant it worked for over a decade.
Chris Matthews finally had enough the other night, because the little taunt was also a taunt at him. Bravo. He made it possible for others to do so.
And Bravo to Rep. Kaptur. Democrats now have the power to be just a little bit petty, to call for that little jab to stop.
And it can be used to illustrate a point better than most other ways: How can Republicans call for bipartisanship when they refuse to call the other party by their right name? Doesn’t this show that they haven’t moved one iota from their previous position, and expect absolutely all the motion to come from the other side?
The grammatical discussion is proper, but beside the point: it is the Democratic Party because we say it is. That is the fact that the Republicans are defying. There’s nothing wrong with the name Berno except that is not my name.

They no longer run the schoolyard.

While I think this paints the Democrats as thin skinned, using it as a cudgel to demonstrate a sense of hostility; the absence of bi-partisanship the public is longing for, is actually a pretty good idea.

Calling them out on immature pettiness is quite purposeful in this context, but the sense of emotional wounding is unhelpful.
I really don’t care what these self-important infants want to call me, but the fact that they are attempting to offend me is important to point out.
