Vitter: Limbaugh Is Saying ‘What I Am Saying’ — ‘I Hope’ Obama ‘Fails In Advancing Leftist Policy’

vitter.jpgOn his radio show last week, Rush Limbaugh, the “unofficial leader” of the Republican Party, declared that it was a “dirty little secret” that “every Republican in this country wants Obama to fail.” “None of them have the guts to say so,” added Limbaugh

Since then, however, more and more Republicans have gone on record agreeing with Limbaugh. In an interview with CNN yesterday, Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), the third-ranking House Republican, said “You bet, we want those policies to fail.” Now, in an interview with The Hill, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) admitted that he agrees with Limbaugh:

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) agreed with Limbaugh on Tuesday.

“I hope [Obama] fails in advancing leftist policy that I strongly disagree with,” Vitter said. “I think what [Limbaugh] was saying was largely what I am saying.”

The Louisiana Republican, running for reelection in 2010, told The Hill that he took issue with Steele’s “strong negative” contention that Limbaugh’s comments were “incendiary.” Vitter added that he hopes the Democratic president succeeds in “leading this nation on the right path and helping us recover from this economy.”

The Hill surveyed a number of GOP senators — including Sens. Bob Corker (R-TN), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Richard Burr (R-NC) and Bob Bennett (R-UT) — and though only Vitter went on the record in full agreement with Limbaugh, the paper notes that “Not one senator interviewed for this article criticized Limbaugh.”

Following RNC Chairman Michael Steele’s groveling apology to Limbaugh after he called the radio talker’s wish for Obama to fail “incendiary” and “ugly,” it’s not surprising that other Republicans are keeping their mouths shut.

Though Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) seemed to disagree with Limbaugh this weekend when he said, “I don’t think anyone wants anything to fail right now,” his office is now walking away from that position. When contacted yesterday by both TPM and Greg Sargent, Cantor’s office refused to comment on whether or not the congressman did, in fact, disagree with Limbaugh in hoping for Obama to fail.

Vitter added that he hopes the Democratic president succeeds in “leading this nation on the right path and helping us recover from this economy.”

Ok, exactly how can President Obama help us recover from this economy (that was created by Vitter’s party) if his policies fail?

Don’t these guys realize how schizophrenic they sound?

off topic and stoopid to boot

Anyway, the way that the Republicans are parsing their words to try and justify the failure of the United States is amusing, especially considering the outcry over the definition of what ‘is’ is from the halcyon days of the Clintons.

  8. gummitch says:

    Malik Says:

Hmmm. Right on topic there, bozo.

  9. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

“I hope Obama fails” the framing that they can’t escape. The more they try to explain, the more they reinforce the framing. The next logical question is “what are the leftist policies that you want to fail?” which will require the Republicans to actually talk about President Obama’s agenda, reinforcing it. Delivering a speech is not the only communication skill that President Obama has.

  10. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Max-1, are you advocating group huggies?

  11. avshanbh says:

Republicans are trying to stay relevant by any means except being rational.

  12. Art says:

Limbaugh’s statement was pretty straight forward and clear.
Vitter is trying to recast it in more nuanced terms.

Either way, even if Vitter gets his wish and the “advancing leftist policy” fails, the country will suffer.

The country in more distress. Is that what they are wishing for?

  14. mk3872 says:

“I hope the president fails”. Sounds like a solid plan for the party of ideas, no?

So Vitter does not think these “ideas” are incendiary? “Women are feminazis”, “Obama is a socialist”, “The press are Obama’s butt boys” or “we cannot bend-over and just take it from Obama”?

    Uh huh, I see …

  15. Dreary Urbanite says:

“Shut up diaper boy” should be the response to everything this guy says. He has no credibility whatsoever.

  16. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Malik Says:
The George Soros and ACORN-backed Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie’s office attempted to disenfranchise overseas military voters, including those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, for a technical matter over the voting forms they used.

God, how far out in left field are these trolls going to go? George Soros and ACORN had zero to do with the election in MN. And the “technical matter” this idiot is referring to is the fact that the military absentee ballots arrived after the deadline for absentee ballots to be submitted. That is MN law. Would this person have Mark Richie ignore MN law just because the ballot came from someone in the military?

Also, because of this problem, Richie is working with the State Legislature to come up with a better and more accessible way for people in the military to vote in MN.

Incredibly, Ritchie’s office relaxed the signature requirements for in person absentee voting — which helped Franken — but then refused to relax these same standards for military voters, including those in forward combat zones.

Show some proof of this allegation, troll. I have been following the Coleman/Franken race very thoroughly and no where have I read that this is the case.

However, the Election Contest Court disagreed with Ritchie and is now reviewing some of these military ballots.

Again, show some proof. The only military ballots I have seen that are being re-examined are the ballots that Coleman is claiming were incorrectly disallowed (after trying to get all of them to not be counted in the first place).

The idiot trolls crack me up. They think they can come to any blog, say whatever they want with no backup and people are going to believe them.

  17. aquarius2 says:

So now apologizing is not enough, now the Republicans are going to tell us what Rush meant? I mean, what is so hard about understanding the words “I want Obama to fail”. Seems pretty clear to me.

Get out your earplugs because the next GOP talking point is how the Dems are victimizing Rush.

  18. A Patriot Acting says:

Malik, I think your lost. I’ll try to help, this discussion is about the diaper-shitter-Vitter and the GOP’s man crush on Rush Limbaugh. You guys sound surprised, this is nothing new. We ALL knew this. Did you really think Republicans EVER wanted Obama to suceed? Limbaugh Said it best!

Limbaugh: “The dirty little secret … is that every Republican in this country wants Obama to fail, but none of them have the guts to say so; I am willing to say it”

Now that someone has finally said it for them, they feel more confident to come out of the closet. They’ll reap what they sow though, just as they did in ‘06 and ‘08 when they got their a@# kicked.

As a democrat I love watching them in their demise but I do not wish them ill, I wish they would wake up and do what is best for the people they represent.

  24. paleolib says:

Not surprising Limprod and DiaperMan share the same views about Obama. Some say (see what I just did there?) they share the same hookers, social diseases and recreational drugs as well. They certainly share the same degree of esteem in the reality-based community.

  25. Xisithrus says:

The (Obama) spending bill included approximately 8,570 earmarks worth $7.7 billion. Right now the database only includes the earmark tabulations of senators but Taxpayers for Common Sense says they “will add more detail, house member totals and track down the states of many of the earmarks” in the coming days.

When the database is analyzed to include solo member requests and joint requests with other members, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MI) is way ahead of the pack with 204 earmark requests totaling $470.1 million. The ranking Republican on the Appropriations Committee is followed by Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MI) who shared $390.1 million earmarks with other members and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) who shared $322.1 million earmarks. It is worth noting, however that while Wicker and Landrieu had $4.3 million and $10.3 million solo earmark requests respectively, Cochran had $75.9 million.

Will Vitter come forward and accuse (R) Cochran of being leftist? (R) Wicker? (R) Richard Shelby $114.5 million in earmarks? (R) Kit Bond of Missouri who secured $85.6 million in earmarks?

  26. fletc3her says:

The Republicans are trying to add nuance to their blank “no”, but I don’t think the public is going to buy it. Obama was elected to implement the very policies he is implementing today. Whether you call them “leftist”, “liberal”, “socialist” or you run around screaming about the red menace, they are the only way out of the hole which the Republicans have spent eight years digging. Hoping for Obama to fail is the same as hoping for America to fail.

Vitter will do as he’s told as long as he can still see prositutes. Now Rush Limbaugh is the Leader of the Republican Party as Rahm Emanuel said. Christian Republicans have a new Leader who is a child molester and drug addict while their Token Black Michael Steele is just used for minority votes only. Republicans and Rush are so scared of President Obama when the real enemy is Rahm. He’s the smartest guy in the room as he just feeds the Beast. If the Republican Law Makers would stay away from the drugs and alcohol they would realize Rahm is like the kid in school that all the teachers like but he feeds the chaos. Rahm listened and watched how Rush got more and more out spoken and how idiots followed him. Now Rush who’s brain is fried by drugs wants to debate the President of the United States. Just think if anyone said that to former President George W. Bush they would be sent quickly to Gitmo, or Cheney would have shot them. The Republican Party is better then these guys running off at the mouth. John Boehner is just collecting pay to play checks and Eric Cantor looks at President Obama the way woman look at Orlando Bloome and that’s really scary. An honest educated Republican needs to step forward before Rush totally distroys the hold Party. McConnell is busy now trying to help his wife who violated the Hatch Act. Rush might call on the Democrat they have been paying Harry Reid to help.

  61. patt says:

This is interesting, on the CCN website:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — On the day that the Obama administration begins implementing a new program to fight home foreclosures, a new national poll suggests that most Americans think the plan is unfair to those who pay their mortgages on time.

Sixty-four percent of those questioned in a Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday feel the Obama administration program is unfair to those who pay their mortgages on time. Only 28 percent say that the president’s $75 billion plan is fair…

Dunno. I’m way above water on a 5%/15yr fixed note, never once been late, 6 years in. I feel oddly un-resentful, given the aggregate severity of the economic situation.

  85. Tallygirl says:

Since the majority of the country voted for the “leftist” candidate, doesn’t that mean that maybe, just maybe, Americans WANT the policy to go with it? Because, just maybe, many of those people remember what it was like when we had a Democratic (which translates into “leftist” in Republican-speak) president and how well things were going then. It’s true what the commercial (for what, I don’t know)says: when things go bad in America, we go back to our core values of family and the simple things in life and we get all nostalgic for the “good old days” and most of the “good old days” are when a Democrat was in charge. Yeah, that’s it.

Bull sh!t, you are a liar, and a poor one at that.

Nice try, guys, I do this Troll act solo. Now and then I’ll back up backup, but defending any other Troll means I have to defend John Kerry too, under the 14th Amendment to the Troll Constitution. Ain’t gonna happen.

And come on, seriously, aren’t you guys getting just a weeeee bit sick of three Rush threads a day? Like I said before, indulging a guilty pleasure once a day is one thing, but making it the central subject of the whole blog? No other topic is getting as much attention as the sayings and doings of this fat gasbag and the sayings and doings of members of Congress regarding said fat gasbag.

But I leave now, before Matt points out I am posting to a Rush thread. Enjoy your mental cotton candy.

  103. Keltoi says:

    Correction: defend John Kerry.

  104. hellinabucket says:

Proud, being someone who supports Rush Limbaugh please tell me you’ve heard of Fox News. Whole bunch of talking heads there and they were bad mouthing Bush. After 9/11 almost nobody bad mouthed him. Only after it became apparent that Bush’ elevator didn’t go to the top floor that sane and brave americans started to question the path he was taking us.

  105. Purple State says:

Obama is too BUSY to debate Rush.

The GOP is not relevant, will not BE relevant, until 2010 elections. And in case you hadn’t noticed, Obama has more on his plate to talk to someone who hasn’t the capacity to listen to liberals.

Rush is the mouthpiece of the GOP, not its leader. Talking with him will not do anything but prove that Rush can get under Obama’s skin.

  106. hellinabucket says:

Keltoi, are you denying this is a story? Name the leader of the republican party. Show me the platform they stand on. Admit it, it’s a feeding frenzy in the GOP and Rush has the biggest bib right now.

When the apologies fly out of their mouths with the speed in which they have recently it shows the GOP is in full panic mode.

  107. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Keltoi, your point about defending BoldfaceLiar is well-taken and does keep you from being labelled a troll yourself.

That said, why wouldn’t we Push the Rush? Limbaugh is the center of the spinning machine previously known as the Republican Party. Who else remains with him? Who disagrees with him, and why? These are solid political issues.

Oh, I don’t blame you guys for employing this tactic at all. Rahm knows exactly what he is doing by declaring Rush the leader of the Republicans – it is good politics, but I also think it is a Strawman, and I think Rahm knows that.

What bugs me a bit is the waste of bandwidth here at TP, a place my little stony Troll heart cherishes. The GOP is in total disarray, sure, but you all know quite well Rush isn’t its leader. He never has nor ever will hold office. He is a pundit with a big mouth and a big audience, but he is in no way the leader of the party. The party has no leader at present.

I like policy debate and I love political analysis. I just hope you guys aren’t falling for your own storyline. The more you stick Rush in the face of the public, fine, good tactical move for you, but why do it here when everyone who comes here is either already a Progressive or a poop and scoot Troll like John Kerry? Who are you trying to convince of anything here as regards Rush?

I dunno, maybe I am wrong. I do think TP could just do a Rush Limbaugh Thinkfast thread once a day and have done with it.

Soon we’ll be digesting the investigations into Rove, Gonzalas and the others and this little appetizer will be pushed to the side of the table.

You didn’t answer any of my questions. Who is rising to the top in the GOP? What’s there platform? And a new one, Why do they feel the need to apologize to Rush?

  112. Hoodathunk says:

POTUS taking time from saving the country to debate an entertainer? Seriously? If Rush wants to have a debate he should call Jon Stewart. And invest heavily in Depends.

Only if you’re unencumbered by facts and logic. If President Obama’s policies – which are neither radical nor socialist, by the way – fail, then it will not be possible for America to survive, much less succeed.

The Bush years have already proven that the laissez-faire economic approach doesn’t work, and that the market is incapable of taking care of itself. Your economic policies HAVE failed – not because we “leftists” were rooting for them to fail, but because they’re flawed and dangerous policies.

    __________________________________________________________

Now THAT sounds like a playground taunt from a fourth-grader. Nice try, but Obama has more important things to deal with than a bombastic gasbag.

But just for fun — let’s pretend that Obama DID agree to debate Rush. Rush would backpedal so fast his head would spin. Think of it — how often does Rush operate in ANY arena where he doesn’t have complete control of the situation? Do you see him on panel discussions alongside progressives? Do you see him as a guest on any show where the host isn’t a Rush dittohead? He’s far too much a coward to leave his comfort zone.

In a fair debate with Obama (or anybody else), Rush wouldn’t be permitted to cut anybody’s mike. He wouldn’t be permitted to “abort” any line of questioning with a cute vacuum sound effect. He wouldn’t be able to control the topic list, so he wouldn’t be able to stack it with his straw men. And because fact checkers would be paying close attention, he wouldn’t be able to just make sh!t up on the spot.

Rush would rather gargle glass than submit to these conditions.

  123. Keltoi says:

    Dr. Hussein Matt Says:
Keltoi, do you denounce Rush and all the republicans who want America and Obama to fail?

When did Obama become synonomous with America? When you wanted Bush to fail, were you wanting America to fail? The country is much larger than any single man or party.

You hated Bush and – I presume – love your country, so when you rooted for Bush to fail, you thought you were rooting for America to succeed. Now the reverse is true. In other words, it is a false dilemma and is only the purview of pure ideologes like Rush and – perhaps – you.

To answer the substance of the question, I do not want Obama to fail. I am extremely concerned that the course he has set will end in failure and a worsening of our economic situation, but the R’s screwed up so bad it is fair to let the Dems have their shot. I just wonder how much cumulative damage our economy can take from Bush-Obama deficit spending. The debt we are incurring under O’s plan is pretty damn scary…

  124. dbadass says:

No, I can’t claim that level of expertise, and note I said the Dems deserve their shot. I am very concerned about this level of spending. I don’t think that the Stimulus Bill was passed in a sober and measured way. And I am not alone on the next spending orgy coming down the pike

Oh looky… a semantics game. Can I try? I hope Rush’s heart fails (presuming he has one). Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want him to die, I just hope his heart fails. Is that about how it works?

  130. RecallObama says:

Obama succeeding would simply be to implement his policies.

In that case we all fail.

It doesn’t take half a brain to figure out that when you have no money and you’re in debt up to your ears, the last thing you want to do is get another credit card with a 3 trillion + spending limit on it.

It’s really not as complicated as you lefties believe it is. Cut spending, cut taxes, create jobs.

    It’s just that simple.

Of course we want anything other than that to fail, and it will.

The independant voters that put Obama in the White House didn’t vote for Obama, they voted against George Bush. Eight years of left wing media screaming in their ears every night what a horrible guy George Bush is did the trick. But in no way did those same middle of the road voters realize exactly who they were voting for. They thought they were just voting for another middle of the road politician.

Instead they are getting the ultra left wing lunatic we were warning them about.

They still like the smiling lunatic, as the polls will tell you, but those same polls tell you they hate the policies that the left wing lunatic is pushing forth.

Reality will eventually creep into the minds of the masses and they will turn on the left wing lunatic.

Don’t get yourself caught in the crossfire.

  131. Ontheinside says:

“It’s really not as complicated as you lefties believe it is. Cut spending, cut taxes, create jobs.”

How’d that work out over the last 8-years? It was Einstein who said “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity”. I’m pretty sure he had more than half a brain. Maybe that’s the right’s problem… they’re playing with only half. Thanks for confirming.

True conservatism is the only thing that works.

  133. EugeneDebs says:

It is apparantly too complicated for you rightwing morons that keep telling us we need to keep doing the very things that CAUSED THE MELTDOWN IN THE FIRST PLACE. I guess having half a brain would be aiming HIGH for you. The most recent Nobel Prize winner in economics disagrees with you. So where did you get YOUR degree in economics and when did you win YOUR Nobel Prize? Explain how we both cut spending and create jobs and if you even TRY to talk about tax cuts lets remember how many jobs Bushs tax cuts DIDNT create. This actually IS simple. We have to stem the bleeding and put people back to work and we wont accomplish that by putting our heads in the sand and keep driving the same course toward the cliff

  135. Newsjunkie says:

This is just embarrassing for the Republican Party–we are one nation and should support one another. Rush is an entertainer who has stepped into the role of the lead speaker for the Republican Party and has no authority to do so. It is okay for Democrats and Republicans to have opposing views, but to outright say “I hope they fail” (just to prove that Republicans were right all along) is childish and will, eventually, turn people away from their party. I saw an interesting video assessing his actions from a global perspective. Ariana Huffington gives quite an amusing assumption.

This whole failure crap has made me really think about my own thoughts over the past 8 years. I have tried to be objective in my self-analysis. Obviously that is not possible, but I think I am being as honest as I can.

I honestly don’t remember hoping Bush’s policies would fail. The reality for me is that so much of my dislike for Bush came after events occurred. Obviously 9/11 was a big one. After the fact we found out in relatively short time, how poor that man’s decision-making was. Everything that he did was wrong in my opinion. Well, I was ok with the Afghanistan invasion, but his language, his pivoting to Iraq, his welling up in tears during a press conference after 9/11, flying on AF-1 immediately after the attacks, etc. Nothing to me showed leadership or strength. Nothing. Then, the whole greeted by flowers, shock and awe, etc. was easy to see that this was a difficult task that was unnecessary. I could go on and on (torture, Abu-Ghraib, etc.).

The point is, how could I hope any of that would fail when all of it I learned about after it happened or could so easily see that the benefits of it were nil (referring in this case to the Iraq war). Seriously?

Even when he cut taxes, I hoped that would work. I don’t know that much about finances and economics to come up with a better solution. But I could see that going to war and calling people evil was not a successful foreign policy strategy. Even with the economic stuff it became abundantly clear that encouraging people to spend money wasn’t a real economic policy.

Anyway, for my personal experience, this hoping to fail argument doesn’t make sense. My guess is that is true for many others as well.

And this should apply across the board: if you vote “No” and it passes, you only get the ‘basic’ package — all your provisions and earmarks should be stripped the moment you vote “no”.
