Rove Hits White House For Thinking ‘Everything Through From A Political Perspective’

Yesterday, in a piece that has become a media and right-wing favorite, Politico’s Jonathan Martin suggested that the White House hatched the strategy framing Rush Limbaugh as the face of the Republican party.

Interviewed on Fox News yesterday, Karl Rove strongly objected to the recent focus on Limbaugh. “Is this appropriate?” Rove asked. “The idea that the White House is devoting all this time and energy and effort when we’ve got all this myriad problems facing the country.” “They’re trying to draw attention away from the things that the country wants to talk about,” he quipped. Rove criticized the White House for allegedly engaging in “old style politics” that elevates politics over policy:

ROVE: And it’s clear that this is — that this is the same old style politics that we grew to really dislike in the 1990s, when the White House thought everything through from a political perspective, road-tested it by running polls and focus groups and did everything with a very keen eye towards the politics of the matter, not what was in the best interests of the country.

How does this serve the country for us at this point when we’re discussing these big, vital things like the budget and health care and the stimulus bill and the omnibus spending bill – how does it well serve the country for this little sideshow concocted in the chief of staff’s office in the West Wing? Not very — not very useful.

Watch it:

Rove’s newly-discovered moral highground is laughable. Indeed, it was Rove concocting “side shows in the West Wing” during his time in office. Rove oversaw the politicization of nearly every aspect of Bush’s federal government, from the Justice Department to the EPA. Rove convinced President Bush to outlaw embryonic stem cell research, helping curry favor with the GOP’s evangelical base.

What was Rove up to in the 1990s? Indeed, he was involved in “old style politics that we grew to really dislike.” In a 1996 campaign for Arkansas Supreme Court, Rove printed flyers that “viciously” attacked his client’s opponent’s family. President Bush’s 1994 gubernatorial campaign, on which Rove was a top adviser, featured an infamous push poll hinting that opponent Ann Richards was a lesbian.

Did Rove see how this would play with his evangelical pawns prior to making this claim?

  2. EugeneDebs says:

PURE projection. The Bush administration had no policy arm at all ONLY a political arm. That was the charge made by one of the members OF the administration when he left. Mayberry Machiavelli’s. Rove was one of the reasons.

  3. Zooey says:

    Oh, the irony…

  4. Tired of being lied to says:

Whoa – is Rove reminiscing about the good-old days and the way he and Bushy ran things? This is a page out of his own memoirs.

Rove has spent so much time and effort deceiving everyone else he has now successfully deceived himself.

  7. misshusseinmolly says:

Rove is obviously still living by his own axiom that the average attention span in this country is about five minutes long. He doesn’t realize that there are many of us whose memories are longer than that.

But I suppose if he was pressed on the issue by somebody pointing out the obvious hypocrisy, he could spin it by saying that he was merely accusing the current team of THINKING from a political perspective, while he and Bushco DID everything from a political perspective.

    See the difference?

Interesting to see which names get the respectful capitalization. Are you going to whine about me commenting about your post, again, archie?

  28. Bobwurst says:

In Rove’s defense, maybe he’s arguing that policy has no place in the Whitehouse and it should all be about the politics.

  29. McWars says:

Aftermath strategy: Attempt to evade accountability by accusing the succeeding administration of doing the exact same thing you’ve been doing. Setting the differing administrations as “equals” waters down your own corrupt activities.

In other words, if the new administration cleans bread crumbs off the counter, accuse them of stealing a loaf of bread.

  30. EugeneDebs says:

    Archie B Says:

I believe obama ran on “the party of unity” platform. Well, one of his many platforms. The wedge is deeper than ever.

That may be true but not because Obama didnt try. He DID reach out to the GOP who acted like the spoiled children they are. No one I know expects miracles from Obama. He can only try. When YOUR side elects some grown-ups to Congress perhaps there will be unity but compromise doesnt mean the guys who WON THE ELECTION should unite behind the GOP’s previously stated positions.

The majority of Americans agree that Obama has reached out to Republicans. The only wedge here is the pathetically tiny one Rove and Limbaugh keep trying to use, using little drones like you to repeat their message verbatim.

More importantly- Rove’s hypocrisy and crimes should be dealt with accordingly. I honestly think I’ll have to throw a party if I ever see the image of that man in handcuffs.

The majority of the story has come from the Republicant’s hanging themselves with the rope that the Obama Administration handed them.

It seems to me that the Republican party has finally boiled down to a collective of misfits. America now needs a new party to take the place of the Republicans, wow what a concept! What do you do when you loose your dancing partner after all these years?

  107. slappy magoo says:

Anyone else get the occasional feeling that Rove is triple-dog daring the entire rest of the nation to punch him in the junk?

  108. Wayne A. Schneider says:

ROVE: And it’s clear that this is — that this is the same old style politics that we grew to really dislike in the 1990s, when the White House thought everything through from a political perspective, road-tested it by running polls and focus groups and did everything with a very keen eye towards the politics of the matter, not what was in the best interests of the country.

    Mr. Rove,

Except for the part about road-testing by “running polls and focus groups” (because Bush did not care what the American people thought), everything you describe was your entire job at the Bush White house! Including, nay especially, the part about what you did not being in the best interests of the country.

  109. wizard2000 says:

Karl Rove…once a pig, always a pig. Oink oink Karl. And no amount of lipstick will help.

  115. DallasNE says:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Rove is a fine one to be talking about policy being driven through the prism of politics. Rove, in fact, should be embarrassed by his nickname of “Bush’s brain”. A brain that drove Bush’s approval rating into the 20% range. Turdblossem is more like it.

  119. 1ChanceOnly says:

Republicommunists like Rove…are so full of themselves that Reality escapes them. Let’s use 9/11 to highjack the Constitution so we can create a dictatorship. Wow Rove…I hope you really tick off Obama so he can sick the Justice Dept. on You…We really need a special prosector.

  120. curious says:

Rove is wrong. The White House has not given undue notice of Limbaugh. We have, out here. It is a real pleasure to watch the dog and pony show of the Republicans. They have given all of us so much ammunition. Like a gift that keeps on giving.

And for Rove, a criminal scum bag to try and find the high road for himself, it boggles the mind. And to think anyone other than Fox would still be interviewing Rove, or Gingrich or DeLay, says volumes about what continues to be wrong with the main stream media. It also illustrates why news and news sources continue to implode.

Limbaugh is the Republican Party. They defer to him, praise him, and kiss his ass first then his ring. Of course he is noticed. When they continue to hoist him on their shoulders as the only example they can get behind, they prove the point. Eisenhower, Goldwater and even Nixon would be rolling over in their graves and if they were not already dead, they would die of shame.

This is no party. This is a parody of a relevant, substantive organization. Comedy Central here they are.

  121. SnoBird says:

Rush is the punch line in a Monty Python skit . . . armidillo on Texas Highway . . . splat . . . Oh my, did we hit something? Screech . . . I’m not dead yet . . . I wanna debate Obama. No hun, we didn’t hit anything. Road kill. But I’m not dead yet.

Hun, do you want to listen to the Greatful Dead or The Killers? and so it goes . . . (buuuttt, I’m not dead yet . . . .)

    Dust in the wind.

  122. anafikir.blogcu.com says:

Way to miss the point, satyam. The point Karl was making is obama is supposed to be all about “change.” Politics as usual in the obama administration.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It is referred to that way by brainwashed morons like YOU. No wonder YOU are referred to as an ignorant cretin

  124. colinjames says:

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

    Rove is kinda like the Mother-of-all-Trolls;

(falsely) accusing Dems of doing the very thing the Reich-wing does ad infinitum. That’s their strategy- to enrage us, put us on the defensive, and control the message. And since they all march in lock-step, from party leaders to media figures to their too-dumb-to-realize-they’re-being-lied-to constituents, the lie becomes reality to them.

I guarantee you this ridiculous assertion becomes the hot topic for days- “Is the White House playing politics instead of working to solve the financial crisis?” and crap like that will be argued about on nightly news, I can just see it now.

And in the meantime, Obama will continue to deal with our problems- the problems created precisely due to the fact that Dubya and Rove did nothing BUT play politics for eight long years. Mission Accomplished? Thanks guys!

  125. diffrntdrummr says:

Oh Please…Can’t we just move on? Who the hell cares what Karl Rove thinks or says..Really.

  126. milaninthesun says:

It has been a great week!
1.) The dollar is “suprisingly stong”; the world is buying
the greenback”. I think that translates into “Obama
confidence”. Confidence in the path we are on.
2.) Speed of the stimulous package, getting the money on the
table while the getting is good.
3.) The Ditto heads are screaming so Obama may just be on the
    right path.
4.) The RNC has a new leader. Well spoken, articulate and a
force to be reckoned with. The Republicans are a
wonderful bunch. They can add Rushes’ name to the list
of prominent GOP leaders. Dick Nixon, Joe McArthy.
Rushes performance was flawless, maybe a little
    overmedicated.
5.) I feel a little sorry for the ditto head senators and
house members. Can’t have a thought of their own.
Wonder how this will translate back on the home turf.
The Obama people have a lot to smile about and they don’t
have to work at it. It is still hard to stand by and
watch people shoot themselves in the foot. Such ashame!

  127. onetruepatriot says:

Karl Rove…….you are irrelevant. You, along with your fellow criminal political operatives, drove your entire party in to irrelevancy. Would it not now be wiser to STFU??
