Gupta will reportedly turn down Surgeon General post.

sanjay.gifSanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent, will reportedly not leave his television career to become Surgeon General. “Gupta, who had been the leading candidate for the post, withdrew his name even as President Obama hosted a health care summit at the White House. Gupta did not attend.” He encountered criticism for “his mugging of Michael Moore over Sicko” and for having a cozy relationship with drug companies. On the Wonk Room, Igor Volsky floats Howard Dean as a possible replacement.

Update "Sanjay Gupta was under serious consideration for the job of surgeon general," an administration official told CNN. "He has removed himself from consideration to focus more on his medical career and his family. We know he will continue to serve and educate the public through his work with media and in the medical arena."

I think Howard Dean for Surgeon General is a wonderful idea.

  2. 666lattes says:

Did he too forget to pay his taxes or something? What’s with these ungrateful bastids?

  3. spencers mom says:

Whatever reason Gupta uses, it’s all about money for him. Why take a government salary when you can whore for the drug companies and be a CNN talking head?

    Well, good riddance.

    PEACE

  5. katy says:

(my first reaction even before i read the copy)

  6. Theresa says:

    You nailed it spencers mom.

Gupta has a much more lucrative career as a pill shill rather than working for the people.

  7. katy says:

    i agree, mom – good riddance…
    never liked the idea.

  8. 666lattes says:

    spencers mom,

    Amen!

  9. backup says:

Isn’t Howard Dean kind of a heavy hitter for the post of Surgeon General?

  10. Theresa says:

Forgive my density, but shouldn’t the post of Surgeon General be held by a medical doctor? Don’t get me wrong, I like Dean, but US Surgeon General?

  11. Theresa says:

    Addendeum to #10, nevermind…. he’s a doctor…

  12. stateofthedivision says:

Tim Geithner’s Deputy Treasury nominee withdrew today as well.

This piece is on the overall trajectory of President Obama’s nominees:

The Surgeon General role used to be a heavy hitter. Bush turned it into a joke.

  14. Buckie Boy says:

We don’t need a corporate whore as Surgeon General.

    FTR

  15. AlGore says:

But wait! Just yesterday TP was hammering Dean for saying:

Dean: ‘I Don’t Think We Should Impose A Single-Payer On Everybody’

    <a href=”http://thinkprogress.org/2009/03/04/dean-on-health-care/#comments”

    Zooey Says:
What the hell is wrong with Dean?
    Jesus f ucking christ…

Zooey has spoken, Dean is out!

  16. Rich H says:

    Gupta to Michael Moore:

I don’t care if you expose the truth, I’m a doctor dammit and I know more than you, I can shout louder, I can talk over you, and I’m a corporate shill who has to get paid!!

  17. tigger says:

    HOWARD!!!!!

    Please, pretty, pretty please?

    Stop being a jerk, Rahm!

Our troll friend AlGore isn’t very bright, is he?

Maybe it didn’t start with Bush, Clinton’s first pick was a veterinarian.

And another one bites the dust. What is with Team Messiah and these nominees?

Nazareth Said to Withdraw for Deputy Treasury Post (Update1)

    By Robert Schmidt

March 5 (Bloomberg) — Former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission member Annette Nazareth has taken herself out of the running to be deputy Treasury secretary, according to people familiar with the matter.

Nazareth, who hadn’t yet been nominated, grew frustrated at the length of the selection process and was concerned that her SEC work would be assailed at Senate confirmation hearings, the people said. Before becoming a commissioner, Nazareth was head of the SEC’s market regulation division where she helped design an oversight regime that has been criticized for missing Wall Street’s excessive risk taking.

Nazareth’s withdrawal is a setback for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who’s without any confirmed deputy or undersecretaries as he grapples with the global financial crisis. Asked about staff recruitment efforts this week, Geithner didn’t indicate any imminent nominations.

For the cripes sakes are we going for the record here? Has there ever been such an incompetent Treasury Secretary?

  21. Jim Wolf359 says:

I just never could seriously accept the idea of Gupta as Surgeon General. Howard Dean on the other hand…..

That would be a great pick, if Emannuel could get over his animus towards Dean.

What would you prefer? A weak, kneeling, open backed gowner?

  23. DNFP says:

So I guess Mickey Rourke is out of the question?

  24. Realness says:

    Algore-

there was also other discussion arguing the merits of Dean’s possible incrementalism. A lot of people were pissed, a lot of people were more wait-and-see.

see? disagreement can happen when you aren’t part of the hive mind!

  26. Evergreen2U says:

Glad Gupta Gone. Now on to Howard?

  27. backup says:

I’m trying to ramp up my concern trolling, so I’ve got to slip in the Dean Scream:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1ycCFVKSg4

This is what killed his political career, but it wasn’t that big a deal; it should not have derailed him. Other people have made bigger mistakes and recovered.

Dean would obviously make a great surgeon general. But, with his resume, he probably would have been better suited for HHS Secretary.

  28. Realness says:

    sigh

    again, Al Gore-

    I refer you to this:

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/3/5/162035/0589/673/705119

The numbers are from your mothership, FOX news, so take it up with the hive.

It appears that President Obama’s approval ratings raised.

    Hmmm, what was that again?

    Raised.

Sounds good. Looks like Americans don’t have time for your sad little complaints after a massive 8year FAIL.

    Zooey Says:
What the hell is wrong with Dean?
    Jesus f ucking christ…

Now that’s what I call reasoned and polite “disagreement.”

  30. Realness says:

Well see, AlGore, I’m not the one crying in my parent’s basement, and obviously not as thin-skinned as you. Did Zooey scare you?

  31. dbadass says:

And another one bites the dust. What is with Team Messiah and these nominees?

Do you have an agenda or something?

  32. AlGore says:

Of course, Have you ever seen her? HOLEY CRAP! Not only does she swear like a drunken sailor, she kinda looks like one too.

  33. CParis says:

I love when powerful, big-buck guys say they’re going to focus more on “their family”. Usually they’re just one step ahead of the indictment or pink slip.

  34. RealCalGal says:

The Good Doctor would be great, but Rahm Emmanuel will never allow it. Rahm didn’t like the 50 state strategy, won’t admit it was part of the victory in November, and apparently knows how to carry a grudge.

Of course, Have you ever seen her? HOLEY CRAP! Not only does she swear like a drunken sailor, she kinda looks like one too.

I think she is hot and either way you need some manners

  36. Nevar says:

I flagged AlGore for polluting the environment.

  37. Realness says:

right Algore, because all of the Maxims scattered around your sad basement “apartment” make you a good judge of women.

or maybe you just cozy up to pictures of Coulter and Palin?

  38. Marie says:

I don’t think we know what the problem is with Howard Dean and the Obama administration – we’ve heard about head-butting with Rahm Emanuel, but we really don’t know the facts.
Surgeon General is not a cabinet post, but a holds a public position on health for Americans.
Why not Howard Dean for that post? I think so!!

  39. Marie says:

    M. Jocelyn Elders was a good surgeon general (a pediatrician). She was ahead of her time. She advocated sex education, abortion rights and and she wanted to explore legalizing marijuana.
Clinton was having to fight republicans for 8 years and he couldn’t take the controversy that her honest remarks provoked.

  40. dixie blood says:

It’s great news that this shallow, self-centered media/corporate whore will not be our next Surgeon General.

    From wikipedia.org:

“Some journalists and journalism professors specializing in health care have criticized Gupta’s coverage. Trudy Lieberman, a regular Nation contributor on healthcare and director of the health and medicine reporting program at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism[18] reviewed Gupta’s “ineptitude” in reporting on the McCain health plan. Lieberman criticized Gupta for relying on insurance industry statistics, and a health expert quoted by Lieberman said that Gupta’s reporting “gives a gross oversimplification.”[19]

Peter Aldhous criticized Gupta’s “enthusiasm for many forms of medical screening – even when the scientific evidence indicates that it may not benefit patients.” He and other medical journalists accuse him of a “pro-screening bias” in promoting widespread electrocardiogram and prostate cancer screening, even though medical authorities like the US Preventive Services Task Force recommends against it.[20]

Others have criticized Gupta’s promotion of Merck’s cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil, without disclosing the financial arrangements between CNN and Merck.[21]

Gary Schwitzer, professor of health journalism at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism, has regularly critiqued Gupta’s reporting.[22][23]“

    >>>

I agree wholeheartedly that Elders should get the job.

  42. stateofthedivision says:

I recommend Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut and physician. I heard her speak at the National Association of Community Health Center meeting in 2005.

She cited the greatest cause of death and disease, war and internal strife. Besides the direct damage done by violence, food and medicine supplies are interrupted, clean water becomes scarce and sewage can become a problem.

    Totally. Zooey is way hot.

But then I’m into intelligent, witty women. I’m not intimidated by them.

  44. Marie says:

    woke @42
    That is a joke, right?

My comment on Elders was a reply to an earlier post criticizing her.

  45. backup says:

I imagine that Zooey is hot. She can also hold her own and I think she’s probably not that concerned with the manners of AlGore.

Especially, if he saves the world from global warming.

I am intimidated by smart women. And girls that wear leather. And smart women that wear leather? Forget about it.

  46. backup says:

Elders was ahead of her time. She was a little too frank for the political environment. Even today’s political environment. But, she was right.

  47. dbadass says:

backup either compliment the lady or don’t compliment the lady.

  48. backup says:

dbadass. I think that was a compliment.

She’s hot, she can hold her own, and she’s probably not phased by the insults of AlGore.

    That is nothing but love.

    I also believe she’s intelligent.

The leather thing was just an aside.

Every once in a while. This one was just a no-brainer. ; )

  51. ralph the wonder llama says:

dbadass, B-cup must be in agreement with some of us on occasion.

Otherwise his concern trolling doesn’t work.

  52. Chowda says:

I didn’t know this site was owned by the center for american “progress”. Progress towards what exactly?

Anyway, that (and therefore this site) is nothing but a pipe for sucking up the soros propaganda disseminated to the useful idiots.

This is truly orwellian. Sad, but true…

  53. woke says:

No Marie, it’s not a joke. It’s “high” time the USA ends it’s WAR on Americans who smoke marijuana…..spending billions for years on end and incarcerating millions of people for possessing same.

Sex education that is more than “just saying no” to natural human desires will go a long way toward stopping unwanted preganancies and STD’s.

And allowing women to decide what to do with their own bodies represents actual freedom…..as opposed to allowing a group of (limited in sex, hypocritical and faux moralist) old white men dictate to women what they can and cannot do.

    I know you agree.

    So, what’s wrong with Elders?

  54. woke says:

I have it. How about someone who has actually RUN the senate for a few years and has shown the ability to work with both sides of the aisle, also has healthcare connections and knowledge and has written a book on reforming healthcare.

If only there was someone perfect like that and whom supported Obama from the beginning…..eh?

Oh, well, the neocons and their corporate media mouthpieces would probably make a mountain out of a molehill and hammer him endlessly until he withdrew…

    eh?
