Steele Claims He Personally Never Attacked Limbaugh: ‘I Was Saying That There Are People Out There’ Who Have

Over the past week, newly-minted RNC chair Michael Steele has been engaged in a tit-for-tat with conservative radio talker Rush Limbaugh over who the leader of the GOP is. “I am the de facto leader of the Republican Party,” Steele argued last Saturday on CNN. Steele then jabbed Limbaugh, saying his “whole thing” is “entertainment,” “incendiary,” and “ugly.”

Since then, Steele has been squirming under pressure from Limbaugh’s allies. Not only did he later apologize for crossing Limbaugh, but he refused to say yesterday whether or not he agreed with Limbaugh’s hope that President Obama fails. “My personal opinion doesn’t matter in this,” he said. Now, Steele is denying he criticized Limbaugh at all, telling Sean Hannity last night that he never attacked him in the first place:

STEELE: The point that I’ve been trying to make which is if you go back and listen to that [CNN] exchange, there was no attack on Rush. I was saying that there are people out there who actually want to demonize and use him as a boogie man, but also say that what he is saying is ugly and divisive.

Watch it:

Going back to the tape, as Steele suggested, one can easily see that Steele never attributed his attacks on Limbaugh to “people out there.” In fact, Steele himself called Limbaugh’s “thing” “incendiary” and “ugly”:

STEELE: So let’s put it into context here. Let’s put it into context here. Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment. Yes, it’s incendiary. Yes, it’s ugly.

Steele’s public gaffes — such as giving “slum love” to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) and throwing a shout out to “one-armed midgets” — are now worrying key party leaders “that the GOP has made a costly mistake” in going with him as RNC chair.

And despite bowing down to Limbaugh, Steele apparently still has confidence in his firebrand credentials. “I’m in the business of ticking people off,” Steele told the Washington Post yesterday. Indeed, he is in the business of ticking everyone off — everyone except Rush Limbaugh.

Man up, Steele. Have some balls! You did say it. You did mean it.
As the “de facto leader” of the Republican party, STAND BY WHAT YOU SAID!!!

(Oh wait, maybe “de facto” means one can construe the facts to whatever one wants.)

I didn’t think they were capable of that.

Quick, while they are having a moment of clarity from their collective mental disorders, someone show them ALL their policies from the last 30 years…. Talk about costly mistakes.

It doesn’t get much better than this. The GOP is off in the wilderness and taking aim at each other, circular firing squad style. Meanwhile, Obama is spending political capital and his popularity contines to rise. Awesome.

So Mr. Steele, if you didn’t attack Rush, why did you apologize to him?

These people really think we are stupid. They think that we can’t listen to what he said and understand what he said. The conservatives must really hate the internet. The Internet makes it hard for them to lie and get away with it.

“Entertainer” indeed. I never thought that I could be entertained so much by Rush Limbaugh without even listening to him…

Deregulating everything to please fat cats was a costly mistake. Allowing for-profit greedheads destroy our country’s health care system was a costly mistake. The Republicans have made so many mistakes that have TRULY cost our country and our people, that putting a weasel in charge of their party doesn’t even hit the radar.

I am not sure about this, it’s just my gut feeling, but Michael Steele will never be effective by chasing the hard core ditto heads. Kissing Limbaugh’s butt and appearing on Hannity only appeals to the really hard core, the ones that gave Bush his 23% approval rating despite Bush’s crumbling empire. These hard core, refuse to believe in reality, types lap up this stuff but in the general scheme of things, they are only a small part of the GOP.

That is what is so delicious about the current predicament in which the Republicans find themselves.

The hard-core right is the only constituency they have left that they can count on, and they’re driving moderates away with the hard-core, vengeful characteristics of that contingent. If they move to appeal to moderates, especially moderates of color, the hard-core wingnuts go crazy. They then move to placate those whiny babies, and the moderates they were trying to entice say, “screw this”. and walk away.

    it’s really quite sublime.

You don’t understand. The Republican Party has imploded to the point where all that remians is the base of racist, sexist, homophobes, and their elitist masters. As such, Rush Limbaugh is now the perfect leader for the Republican Party.

I think Steele’s strategy thus far is nothing short of brilliance. There is simply no better way of attracting huge numbers to your party than to keep “ticking people off.” Add in your stalwart support for the failure of the new President, and by definition, the people of America, throw in a generous helping of racism and tone-deafness and you have recipe for a very attractive Big Tent.

As more and more Americans are palpably hurting, losing their home, their savings, their ability to send kids to college, their retirement, nothing pleases more than “ticking people off.” You go, Michael Baby! As Michelle said, “You da Man!”

I went back at that thread and I realized words that I said weren’t what I was thinking, It was one of those things where I thinking I was saying one thing, and it came out differently. 60. telestai2 says:

I am the de facto leader of the Republican Party,” Steele argued last Saturday on CNN.

Here, Mikey, let me give you a quick lesson in legal lingo:

“de juro”, a Latin phrase, means “by or from law.” Juro is the root word for jurisprudence, jury, and justice.

“de facto”, also a Latin phrase, means “by or from fact.” Facto comes from the verb facere, “to do or to make or to produce.” It is the root word for factual, actual, and manufacture. The past tense of that verb is also the root of fiction and fictitious

To sum up: you are the DE JURO leader of the Rethugs: you were elected/appointed to a “leadership” position in your party. But, almost immediately, you have become only a figurehead, a mere token, a babbling mouthpiece.

RushBo, however, is the DE FACTO leader of the Rethugs. He is self-appointed but party-supported. He calls the shots and promulgates the “policies” which the neocons are promoting.

You are a figurehead, Steele. Do you have enough courage to resign for cause? [Hint: "for cause" implies that a person or party is forcing you to do things which violate either your personal ethics or the legal system.]

I’m not talking about search-and-destroy, but I’ve been listening to Barack Obama for a year-and-a-half. I know what his politics are. I know what his plans are, as he has stated them. On his radio show last week, Rush Limbaugh, the “unofficial leader” of the Republican Party, declared that it was a “dirty little secret” that “every Republican in this country wants Obama to fail.” “None of them have the guts to say so,” added Limbaugh

n an interview with CNN yesterday, Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), the third-ranking House Republican, said “You bet, we want those policies to fail.” Now, in an interview with The Hill, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) admitted that he agrees with Limbaugh:

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) agreed with Limbaugh on Tuesday.

Claiming your desire for Obama to fail but wanting the country to “succeed” is like wanting Neil Armstrong to fail to reach the moon but wanting the rocket to make it there. Drugbaugh and the reich-wing made it very clear…they DO NOT want America to succeed. Fact.

    True enough.

Let’s look at it objectively: no matter what policies Obama enacts, Republicans will oppose them. If the economy improves over the next three years, the public at large will give Obama the credit. And Democrats will have strengthened their hand for Congressional elections.

This is unacceptable to Limbaugh and Republicans.

Therefore, their only hope of succeeding at the ballot box in the next two cycles is for the economy to continue to fail.

You see, there is no practical way for Obama to fail and America to succeed. If America succeeds, Obama will get the credit.

    __________

Yes they have. Now they’re just “clarifying” (read: backing down) from their statements now that people are calling them on it. It’s a matter of simple if-then logic. Observe:

Statement p is “Obama fails.” Statement q is “America fails.” I think we can all agree that if p and q are both true, the statement p->q is true. If Obama fails, then America fails.

Therefore, by logical implication, statments ~p->q (If Obama succeeds, then America fails.) and ~p->~q (If Obama succeeds, then America succeeds) are also true (and these conservative commentators can be seen making both statements – America may succeed in getting out of the recession, but will fail by becoming a socialist marxist secret Muslimdom).

The only statement that is untrue is p->~q – If Obama fails, then America succeeds. That is a false proposition, by the logic of the very people making the argument. Therefore, it is a logical impossibility for all these folks to have been saying that they want Obama to fail but America to succeed.

There, there, Rich S. See, toasterhead is sorry. Why don’t you go in your room and play with those Bush and Cheney action figures I bought you. Remember what I told you about putting them in your pants.

Poor Steele. Poor Republicans. Their new motto is “Just say NO” but apparently they can’t say NO to Rush. If they really feel that way, they should make it part of the platform and proclaim loudly that if you want to get in with the Republicans, you have to honor and obey the blowhard.

It would be funny if our political, social, and economic problems weren’t so damn serious. Can’t the Republicans see we aren’t playing a football game here?

  85. shoeless says:

    Rich S Says:

All of these Rush threads are nothing more than diversions from the fact that obama is failing, miserably. Unemployment-up. Stock market-down.

So, you are saying that when unemployment shot up, and the stock market crashed in 2008, George W. Bush was failing miserably?

You don’t understand. The Republican Party has imploded to the point where all that remians is the base of racist, sexist, homophobes, and their elitist masters. As such, Rush Limbaugh is now the perfect leader for the Republican Party.

No, I understand that that is what the Republican party has become, but, never underestimate the power of the corporate media or the ability of the republicans to change the meme… they already have Ari Fleisher out their spinning his head off calling the Obama administration “childish” for tying Rush to the Republican party. And Ari Fleisher was on Morning Joe… Republicans may be all that you say, but they don’t WANT people knowing it, otherwise they cannot and won’t attract new rubes…er… members into their party.

I think you’d better check that and post your retraction in the time I alot you. It should be easy if that statement is true to prove it. See the thing is that most people here no that I don’t do that no matter how ridiculous someone may be as I have a well established no flagging policy. If you fail to address this erroneous statement I will have you labelled a liar and you will most likely end up being forced into another name change.

    Oh and Rich S
When you are done showing your evidences as to you blatant mistruth in 101 can we get back to this BS. You know what I don’t think I will have to prove you a liar. It seems you have already done it for me…

Oh yeah, I get it. That’s why, when Republicans say these awful things, they get on TV and say, “I didn’t really say those awful things.” And, their mouth-breathing, slope-headed base, chants, “See, they didn’t say those awful things, because they just said so.”

  92. maxamillion says:

Mike Steele, every time you open your mouth your give Black Men a bad name. BE A MAN YOU SPINELESS PUNK!!! You know what you said to D.L. and now you’re going to start the back paeddling??

  93. tombaker says:

RNC will have new chair next week.

The new one will last 2 months.

By midterms they’ll have had 3, and campaign coffers will rest at an all-time low.

R’s only hope (and only capability) – launch a big-lie campaign with sights set on ‘12 and perhaps recover parity in the Senate, and that’s as good as their best-case scenario will dare to dream.

    Reality bites, huh R’s?

  94. Anonymouse says:

Is it just me, or has the tiller of the GOP been grabbed by a gaggle of buffoons and goons?

Everything I hear from that party lately sounds like it’s straight from either Fargo or the Godfather. Maybe Idiocracy, but perhaps that’s too unkind.

  95. Buckie Boy says:

Well, after all Rush the Drug Addict Dominican Underage Prostitute Abuser told him what to say, what to think and when to think it.

The Repukes are such cowards, Rush’s “Lunatic Following” scares the crap out of them.

  99. tombaker says:

Mike Steele will settle down and open a p.r. firm with Alan Keyes. Their “product” will suck ass, but they’ll have a real catchy name for the firm. R’s, whose knowledge of quality extends only as far as flooring materials and window treatments will flock to the firm and claim “inoculation from allegations of racism”. Keyes and Steele will laugh at them and grow wealthier than they’d ever imagined, though they will continue to have suspiciously few black friends.

  100. dbadass says:

    Let’s go Rich S…
The clock is ticking. Not only will I haunt your every move I will endlessly point out that you are a fraud as well as a sissy unwilling to assume responsibility for your own words. Is that really want you want are you the type that will just opt for the name change. Either way you end up looking foolish. Wouldn’t the adult thing to do be just to fess up to you mistakes?

  101. dbadass says:

    Rich S:
You do realize how this makes you look to readers I assume? It is so interesting to me how some people can create and jump through such complex hoops in order to create a scenario in their minds to avoid the obvious.

  102. tombaker says:

dbad – don’t – there’s nothing a flouncing twink like rich craves more than angry attention from a riled-up man.

let him find it at some righty shindig – they’ve got lots of angry authoritarian daddy types who know how to make rich feel like a real lady.

  103. spencers mom says:

    Rich S Says:

    Mike Steele=Great American!

RichasS obviously supports Michael Steele, and quite frankly, I totally agree with him on that!

Having someone who appears unable to complete a logical train of thought, who backtracks and spins virtually everything he himself has said, who throws in racially-tinged jingo to appear “hip and mod” and who even other party members don’t acknowledge as their party leader is perfect!

I agree with ya, RichasS, I hope Steele-da-Man stays on as RNC chair for a long time.

    PEACE

  104. ralph the wonder llama says:

Reading over this thread, I’m struck not only by how thoroughly Rich S has been pwned by dbadass, but also by how many varied points have been smacked back into his end of the court, only to have Rich watch them land as winners and skip on by.

He tries to serve up aces but he constantly double-faults.

It’s really an embarrassing performance. Even Mr. Pee and Art Vandelay are embarrassed.

  105. dbadass says:

Hi ralph. Hope all’s well with you/yours. I’ve got some errands to run. Enjoy yourself
