Gingrich Planning To ‘Look Seriously’ At A Run For President In 2012

gingrichlook.jpg Former House speaker Newt Gingrich is really enjoying his role as the GOP’s potential “Moses.” He has taken on the role of adviser to the congressional GOP leadership, creator of bold new ideas, Republican whip, and general GOP superstar. He frequently uses his platform to launch attacks at President Obama, and is now suggesting that the next role he wants to take on is U.S. president. Gingrich spoke to reporters on Wednesday, before his speech at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia:

Calista and I will look seriously and we’ll probably get our family totally engaged, including our two grandchildren, probably in January, 2011, Gingrich told reporters during a sit-down interview before last night’s speech.

“We’ll look seriously at whether or not we think its necessary to do it. And if we think it’s necessary we’ll probably do it. And if it isn’t necessary we probably won’t do it.”

Gingrich also predicted that his prodigy, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA), will become Speaker of the House someday, saying he “is a great, great leader emerging.” Cantor has said that he talks to Gingrich “every day.”

Ironically, Gingrich — who would be 69 years old in 2012, just a couple years younger than McCain when he ran for president in 2008 — said that he sees the Republican party “moving towards a whole new generation.”

Of course, this flirtation with a presidential bid may be nothing more than a ploy to increase his public stature. After all, when considering whether to run in 2008, Gingrich “joked with FOX News more than a year ago that his flirtation with a White House run was in part to sell books and give lectures, and to focus the debate on his issues.”

Update In a recent interview with Matt Bai, Gingrich said, "I think I’m closer to Benjamin Franklin than to George Washington. ... I’m a contributor to my country and to my times. If it turns out that there’s a moment when it makes sense to run, then I’ll run. But if I end up never being able to run, then it won’t devastate me.”

    Newt, like most lizards only come out from under their rocks when the sun is shining. Gingrich won’t run unless everything looks good for the Republicans and bad for the Democrats. He won’t run if he might actually have to fix something, only if there is something to take advantage of.

  11. telestai2 says:

    The Grinch and Ben Franklin? GIVE ME A BREAK! Franklin was a GENUINE thinker and inventor.
    *He had actual rather than recycled ideas [Poor Richard's Almanac, a lot of the Constitution];
    *he made genuine discoveries [proving that electricity existed and could be harnessed];
    *he produced tangible inventions: the stove named for him, bifocals, electricity, improvements in typesetting, a catheter for men with bladder stones];
    *he promoted education [founded UPenn, wrote and studied extensively];
    *he practiced statesmanship rather than politics [vital negotiations with France, much of that work at his own expense];
    *he exhibited both wit and intelligence [see above].

    Grinch? Attack, slam, deceive, mislead, flaunt, bloviate, smirk, pose, preen, pontificate. . . As Ron White would say, “I don’t think so, Scooter.”

  16. fletc3her says:

    Anyone who is talking about running now is just blowing smoke. This is not the right time to launch a Presidential campaign. First, you’d be running in the midterms against a wildly popular incumbent. Anyone who actually wants to be President will wait until the field is open in 2016. Second, it’s way too early. We’re hardly even thinking about midterms yet. Having your campaign peak three years before the election is not a good idea. This is all posturing.

  22. fletc3her says:

    Oh and please! Benjamin Franklin?! His experiments with electricity went way beyond the kite story we’ve all heard. He actually named “positive” and “negative” charges and did a lot of good science. On top of that he was an excellent writer, one of the leading thinkers of his day, and a renowned statesman, not to mention a founding father.

  23. 5th Estate says:

    Yeah, Gingrich is just trying to maintain his profile and relevance. He’ll face opposition even within what’s left of the GOP.
    His resume is actually very thin; he had one ’success’ which was the ‘Contract ON America and then got booted out of Congress and he doesn’t connect with the hard-core base the GOP has been pretty-much reduced-to. Overall demographics are against him too.

  24. scytherius says:

    UTTERLY hysterical.

    All the GOP has are right wing extremists. So, I’m thinking, Utah and MAYBE TN for them in 2012.

    Yeah, he is a serial adulterer. As I said, he is a Clinton era throwback. It doesn’t matter to me as far as his ability to serve goes, and the Fundies are all hypocrites anyway.

    We don’t need to even touch his personal life:

    Eighty-four ethics charges, most of which were leveled by House Democratic Whip David Bonior, were filed against Speaker Gingrich during his term, including claiming tax-exempt status for a college course run for political purposes. Following an investigation by the House Ethics Committee Gingrich was sanctioned US$300,000. “In my name and over my signature, inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee”, stated Gingrich after he finally pled guilty in January of 1997. The House Ethics Committee concluded that inaccurate information supplied to investigators represented “intentional or … reckless” disregard of House rules. Special Counsel James M. Cole concluded that Gingrich violated federal tax law and had lied to the ethics panel in an effort to force the committee to dismiss the complaint against him. However, the full panel refused to reach a conclusion about whether Gingrich had violated federal tax law and instead decided to leave that finding up to the IRS. In 1999, the IRS cleared the organizations connected with the “Renewing American Civilization” courses under investigation for possible tax violations.

    Before we get all worked up about how much it costs taxpayers to keep George and Laura safe, could we have a comparison of security expenses with the Clintons, George HW and Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, the Carters, and Betty Ford?

    I remember in 2001 when Bill Clinton left office, the wingnut blogs went crazy over the price tag for Secret Service and other security protection for the Clintons. It seems to me that ANY ex-president (or his widow) will cost a fair amount to protect, regardless of what party that president was from, or what kind of job he did in office. It’s part of the package.

    Thank you, as always missmolly, for a dose of sanity.

    Also, how have we extrapolated an annual cost after a month? If there is a security gate going in place, what other measures are being taken that will reduce manpower requirements?

    It is actually kinda funny watching the Left go through Bush Hate withdrawl, though….

    I have to say I see at least two valid comparisons between Newt and Ben.
    Ben Franklin was the “old man” in the circle of founding fathers, Newt is an old man trying to lead a new circle of young Republics out of the wilderness (good luck with that BTW) and secondly Ben Franklin was NEVER the POTUS.

    Do you think that Gingrich is sub-letting some of Rush’s GOOPers or does Rush just let him borrow some of them on the weekends?

    I have said before Newt has too much baggage to be a serious candidate, but I would like to see him run all the same just to act as a foil for the next crop of GOPers. He is very good in debate, beating him would be a good play-off round for whoever comes up through the ranks.

    Who is that person? Who knows. Could be anybody. What was Obama’s resume in 2004? As Hillary said, “a speech.”

    A Newt for Prez campaign isn’t real likely to happen though, this probably is all about selling books and keeping his name recognition up for the speaking/talk show circuit.

    Shortly after the election I was out drinking with polisci professors and a pollster. At the time, of course, Palin was polling huge numbers with Republicans, but the pollster informed me that four years previously, the Democrat with the highest polling numbers was Joe Lieberman.

    I would guess that the most likely Republican candidate isn’t anyone currently on anyone’s list.

    gummitch Says:

    I would guess that the most likely Republican candidate isn’t anyone currently on anyone’s list.

    Yep. And given the scope of Obama’s ambition for the economy and the size of his spending, 2012 will be a referendum on Obama; so long as the R’s don’t run Palin, they will either sink or swim based on the electorate’s assessment of the last 4 years.

    Also, all kinds of crap could break loose. Gods forbid, it could be a National Security election. Who knows what Fate has in store?

  62. misshusseinmolly says:

    ooooooo — look at the pretty trial balloon! I wonder how long it will last until it’s shot down? Two bullets headed right for the balloon — the Republican Party and Gingrich himself.

    If the Republicans want to rise phoenix-like from the ashes, they will have to do it with a fresh face, not one of their tired, beat up warhorses. Remember in 1980 that their return to power after Watergate happened with Reagan, not with any of the Washington fossils. If the GOP chooses Gingrich to be their standard-bearer, they’re essentially admitting they’re still clinging to the old GOP nobody wants anymore.

    If Gingrich is serious about keeping the trial balloon aloft, it can only be because he has forgotten all about his 2008 trial balloon. That was quickly shot down because of revelations of his adulterous activities during Clinton’s impeachment, causing him to withdraw himself from consideration using a sour-grapes lame excuse.

    And, unless Obama starts diddling with interns in the Oval Office, Gingrich’s past sex life and wife-dumping activities WILL be an issue — especially compared to Obama’s squeaky clean family life (McCain and Giuliani are Exhibits A and B). Even if it shouldn’t be. Yes, every candidate’s sex life should be irrelevant, and voters should only consider his/her job qualifications, experience, leadership qualities, positions on the issues, and ideas. But we all know the world doesn’t work that way.

    I suspect that Gingrich knows he has a snowball’s chance in a fire. But this is a way he can stay in the news and continue to convince himself that he’s relevant.

    Neurosyphilis refers to a site of infection involving the central nervous system (CNS). Neurosyphilis may occur at any stage of syphilis. Before the advent of antibiotics, it was typically seen in 25-35% of patients with syphilis.General paresis, otherwise known as general paresis of the insane, is a severe manifestation of neurosyphilis. It is a chronic dementia which ultimately results in death in as little as 2-3 years. Patients generally have progressive personality changes, memory loss, and poor judgment.
