Obama to lift ban on federal funds for stem cell research.

On Monday, President Obama will “hold an event at the White House in which he signs an executive order overturning the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Obama’s signature will reverse an order that former President Bush signed in August 2001, which banned federal funds from going to embryonic stem cell research except for a few dozen lines that were grandfathered in. An administration official tells ABC News that Obama’s announcement will focus on “restoring scientific integrity to health care policy.”

    March 6th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
    ___________

Yes. I did expect Obama to reverse Bush’s moronic pandering on stem cell research, and I also expected the recession to continue for at least another two years before any of President Obama’s policies could have any significant effect on the economy. We’re going to be in the “Obama” recession a while, so get used to it.

Probably signed from that dumbass “ranch” in Crawford, because there was certainly nothing else worth Zippy’s focus in August 2001.

PDB Bin Laden determined to strike in America comes to mind.

Let’s hear it for science! Oh, and a president who understands priorities!

  39. Liberal Kelly says:

Hot damn! I was wondering when he would do this! How utterly exciting! I cannot wait to see the far righties heads explode right off their shoulders!

And here Boehner-head is saying that we’re destroying precious human life. Please. What would he do otherwise? Take these stem cells home and raise them? Stand by and say a prayer or hold a funeral while some janitor threw them in the garbage? Again… PAH-LEASE!

Like someone said on another blog, “I think it will now be easier for researchers to spin off companies from universities — using the discoveries to attract grants, investment dollars and the venture capital needed to bring products to market. It will also help our country lock in strong ethics rules for how embryonic stem cell research should be done – legislation that President Bush vetoed twice. This restriction of science has been a perfect example of why the United States only created 5 Million new jobs over the past 8 years. New technologies have a way of stimulating the economy.”

One last thing… John Kerry? I’m sure if you tugged hard enough, you might be able to pull your head out of your ass.

  40. Marie says:

This is a good thing for more reasons than one – it will benefit all people, and it will occupy the religious rightwingers, so Obama can get his work on the economy done.

    Marie Says:

Good point, Marie. The rightwingers will be all over this like a cheap suit. Most Americans agree that the ban on funding for stem cell research was asinine. The outrage of the right wingers will make the republicans look even more ridiculous than they already do.

This is just TOO good. I’m in liberal heaven!

  42. dbadass says:

    John Kerry
It varies in both time and space. My species of primary interest is migratory so I am restricted by their actual presence in my area. During the nonfieldwork times my course load keeps me busy but currently it is flexible due to TA related issues. My second gig is really sweet in that I get to totally set my own hours and of late I have been opting for very few. I could be doing that right now but I thought a long weekend would be cool. Anyway why are you so interested as I really don’t think that my working conditions are the topic that anyone but you might care aout.

Now since I have answered you might you answer me?

WHY THE WEIRD USE OF CAPS AND BOLD?
In this case I think many of us are curious

  43. valletta says:

Where were all the religious whackjobs yesterday when the doctors who operated on Babs Bush held a press conference and talked about implanting pig valves in her heart? Silent.
Birth control, stem cell research, gay marriage, all “unnatural” and against God’s Will according to them. But pig valves keeping your heart pumping? Just fine.
    Hypocrisy, thy name is Republican.

  44. dbadass says:

Is there a reason that dbadass is so hard to spell? Oh and are we going to get an answer on the Cap/Bold thing?

I suppose it really doesn’t matter. Still can I ask your attitudes and thouhts as to stem cells?

  45. rimhotep says:

Score one for the people – finally! Now maybe we can move forward with Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s research, do ya think?

  46. rimhotep says:

Bush dumbed down this country in all respects – this one being a huge one.

  47. Mathazar says:

I recall why I was so frustrated by this ban in the first place. It was because Bush had no idea what stem cells are, and after it was explained he STILL DIDN’T HAVE A CLUE.

When you have a C- student in charge of scientific research, everyone suffers.

  48. wiley says:

Another benefit will be the foreign researchers who have by-passed America in order to have the freedom to conduct their research, will again consider our universities and medical research facilities, and perhaps we can enter into long-term research agreements with other countries, once we become re-established as a prominent force in the field.

Congrats to the new Prez for trying his best to reverse all the stupidity of the past 8 yrs including this ban.

Before I walk out the door to go to MY KIDS basketball and cheer leading activities I am going to reach far back in my brain to dig up what I thought STEM CELL research was. If I remember correctly it was the cells from the NOT USED or aborted babies embryonic sac…is this right?

  55. DNFP says:

If I remember correctly it was the cells from the NOT USED or aborted babies embryonic sac…is this right?

    WRONG.

Stem cells used in research are the discarded embryos from fertility clinics, grown in a lab, not in a womb.

    Notice the word “discarded”?

    Look it up.

    No it isn’t

  66. ocyater says:

How long will it take until you see a story about a woman intentionally getting pregnant to use her own stem cells in support of creating an organ she needs. It will happen. Wait, which celebrity will be the first one cloned? Wait, wait, wait…why don’t we clone the entire US military so “real” people won’t keep dying. Now that would be a good endstate and I am sure we could do it for close to what the war has costed to date. Imagine the possibilities, MOAHahaha, moaha ha…Just let God be God.

  67. EugeneDebs says:

    ocyater Says:

I want to know how long it will take for a troll to make sense. Cloning people is not legal and slippery slope arguments are logical fallacies. Because something else MIGHT happen is not a logical reason to oppose a completely different thing. By that reasoning we shouldnt allow capital punishment because it is only a matter of time before we execute political opponents or jaywalkers. Try to make sense man.

  68. ocyater says:

I am not opposing it Ms. Eugene because I know it will save lives. However, where will it stop? Money is the root of all evil and there will be some crazy things happen in the future. Like you marrying your dog if you wanted to, the legitimate family is already out the window and nobody will keep the lawmakers in check. Hey, I pray for Mr. Obama and his team every night and I am not worried about what will happen. The only thing I am saying is you will see the stories that I mentioned above. Mark my words.

  74. blclem says:

From what I have read, embyronic stem cells are not very reliable as are umbilical stem cells and adult stem cells. Whey would we want to waste taxpayer’s money on something that doesn’t work? Our country is in an economic slump. We have better use for the money right now than embryonic stem cell research.

If the federal government does give money to these scientist and something does come from it, will the government get a percentage of the patent money. If we pay for it, we should get our money back and more.

  75. ocyater says:

In response to what blclem Says:

I agree to what you say blclem but a human life is precious too. Maybe Obama should ask for a donation from the American people to support the research. There are many sick people that might donate to the cause and he could concentrate on other areas after WE THE PEOPLE decide how much money goes into the fund. In fact, if WE THE PEOPLE joined together as one nation and HALF OF OUR POPULATION would send in a one time $200.00 donation to a big pile of money we would have 20TRILLION dollars. However, WE THE PEOPLE should take back into control what WE SEE FIT. Now that would be exercising a good use OF OUR VOTING SYSTEM. Good night!

  76. EugeneDebs says:

    ocyater Says:

I am marking nothing. Your words are stupid. You keep dredging up these slippery slope arguments like I said they are a logical fallacy by definition. The traditional family? Go suck a rerun of Ozzie and Harriet. Live in the delusional version of the 50’s if you want to moron but not conforming to YOUR narrow minded view of how things ought to work doesnt mean your sexual fantasies about dogs will be part of the American landscape.

Then you are reading delusional propaganda from rightwing sources. No it will hurt us in the longrun to fall behind in basic biological research.

  80. Skeeter1 says:

Interesting note on this, and maybe it deserves its own full post. Eric Cantor has ripped President Obama on this, claiming that is is a distraction from the economy.

Apparently, Cantor did not learn from the failures of the McCain campaign. When McCain suggested that the debate be canceled so that they could focus on the economy, he was mocked as unprepared and unable to deal with two problems at once. It was probably the final turning point in the election.

But it looks like word never got through to Rep. Cantor. Yes, Eric, government CAN work on two issues at once.

  81. kevin1 says:

I don’t get it, the only thing Obama did was allow the Fed. to fund the research. Research was going on all along; Bush just didn’t think the Government should pay for it.
