What losing 4.4 million jobs over 14 months looks like.

In February, employers cut 651,000 jobs , and the national unemployment rate soared to 8.1 percent — the worst since December 1983. The Gavel provides a graph comparing recent job losses to the 1990-1991 and 2001 recessions, showing just how dire the economic situation is today:

By comparison, we lost a total of 1.6 million jobs in the 1990-1991 recession, before the economy began turning around and jobs began increasing; and we lost a total of 2.7 million jobs in the 2001 recession, before the economy began turning around and jobs began increasing.

“Over the last 14 months, the economy has lost a total of 4.4 million jobs – and continuing job losses in the next few months are predicted.”

Update The New York Times also provides a chart.

We’re now in a minor Depression. Thanks Bush Regime!

  2. stateofthedivision says:

That also means “save or grow 3.5 to 4 million jobs” won’t get us back to even. Expect more stimulus.

  3. Witch1 says:

Good Morning Unbelievable, good to read you here..In my little area it has been a depression with inflation on necessary good’s for over a year, granted it has gotten a little worse the past couple of month’s with more rising cost’s and people looking for a place to live but still the same as this time last year…..Had 3 people looking for an RV spot yesterday…In 12 year’s I have not seen this during the winter month’s,…Happy posting …Blessings

  4. Wayne A. Schneider says:

The president didn’t promise to “get us back to even.”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone if we hear the right move the goal posts and claim Obama broke his promise by not getting back the total number of jobs lost in this Bush II Recession 2. He didn’t promise to do that. If he fails to get back the 3.5 to 4 million jobs he promised, then he can be criticized.

  5. Witch1 says:

Good Day Wayne, all of us with 2 brain cell’s to rub together know none of this is Obama’s fault, would bet the troll’s don’t think the same…They are so far off their rail’s they will probably claim Clinton caused it, bush was absent and it’s a continued carry over from that….Blessings

  6. stewarjt says:

It is the beginning of a depression and Paul Krugman is right. President Obama is being too timid with government spending. The stimulus should have been one half bigger than it was.

Also, in whose interest is Timothy Geithner acting by recommending more bank bailouts and refusing to nationalize the largest failed banks?

    I would like an answer.

  7. unbelievable says:

Witch1 Says: Had 3 people looking for an RV spot yesterday…In 12 year’s I have not seen this during the winter month’s,…

Good to see you too! There’s definitely a strain on people’s wallets that is obvious wherever you go. Sad what Reaganomics has done to our nation… And yet there are people who still refuse to bury the old guys corpse.

  8. stateofthedivision says:

Wayne, where did I said President Obama promised to get us back to even? It was an observation on the size of the problem and likely response, which could be Congressional.

  9. unbelievable says:

stewarjt Says: Paul Krugman is right. President Obama is being too timid with government spending.

I’m a fan of Krugman, but I don’t think he understands that Obama has to deal with Republicans – like it or not.

My guess is that he plans another stimulus bill after we start seeing the positive results of this one. My paycheck on Friday was $18 more than normal. It might not be much, but it definitely helps, and psychologically, it did what it was supposed to do…

What drives me CRAZY is that NOW the republicans are calling for a spending freeze….A SPENDING FREEZE
I watched last night as republican jerk after republican jerk stood there on the floor of Congress arrogantly DEMANDING that the Federal Government stop spending money and threatening to fillibuster the budget!!!!

Reid and Pelosi – both have to call their bluff Let them stand there in front of the American people and spew their putrid hot air for days and days.

I bet NONE of them will have the courage to participate in a true fillibuster.

REPUBLICANS ARE TERRORISTS WHO THREATEN THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE!

And the repugs, with the help of the mainstream media, are going to do everything they can to blame this on dems.

These are the same lying liars that told us how “great” the economy was doing under dur chimpfurher – a lie in the lead up to the stolen election of 2004.

Good post, important issue – we cannot let the mainstream media succeed in blaming the failures of 8 years of their economic policies (really nothing more than wholesale theft from the federal treasury).

It will be even more important to educate the public on how the mainstream media fails us – after all – this is how the actually “catapult the propaganda.”

  15. Marie says:

Obama is being asked to do the impossible – cleaning the steamping piles of sh!t left in the White House by its former occupant is more than enough for one man to tackle, but Obama must deal with the intransigent Repugniscum – and a few DINOs who seem to have trouble seeing clearly.
Look for the repugs to criticize him for not performing miracles even as they sat by and watched Bush (who loves to use machinery) pile drive us farther into a hole in the fround.

  20. Zooey says:

Thanks, Republicans. We couldn’t have done it without you.

  21. stateofthedivision says:

Republicans don’t care about people. They want to continue their drive toward the lowest global common denominator on taxes and worker pay/benefits. Only it doesn’t apply to them or their rich supporters who need government money.

That’s the way they want to use our economic crisis. More money for their friends and more misery for the common folk.

  22. azcat says:

A more appropriate comparison on the graph would be the recession in the early 80s. If we’re going to say it’s the worst since then, we should compare it (along side an extrapolation of what the recovery in the 80s looked like)

My heart goes out to President Obama every time I think of the complexity of this problem. I work in a newsroom. Our company has implemented pay cuts of up to 10% starting next week. They are also laying off 500 employees on March 27th. So the “extra” stimulus tax cuts wont be felt by anyone in our company.

  29. Another Joe says:

stateofthedivision – the repug party and the Whig party from which it emerged, has always been about looting the federal treasury for a few insiders.

They believe in bad government because this guarantees a sideshow to distract from the thieving.

They need issues to rally ignorant masses. In the past 8 years, they use these issues to create the lie of a “highly energized base” which allows them to justify stolen elections.

The repugs view the government as a cash cow for a few insiders to exploit while they use morons like chimpy to provide a public face for the lies they promote.

I bet our elected leaders are comparing the size of the problem, which is expected to continue to grow, with solutions enacted to date. I know Paul Krugman is.

They’re likely working on solutions, which hopefully won’t include giving billions of taxpayer dollars to companies shedding jobs. Bush and Paulson excelled at that.

    Depression or recession?

I did a little reading last night about the causes of the Great Depression. Most all agree that the depression was caused by stock market crash of 29/30 followed by bank failure followed by failure to purchase. There were various other reasons thrown in but these 3 were listed as the initial causes in almost every article Sound familiar?

The first clue was McCain being allowed to run, and then Palin. Yeeks.

It’s certainly a plausible theory, and one that had been floated well before the election–let the Democrats have the White House and when they can’t dig out of the enormous sh!thole the Republicans had created, the Democrats will end up with all the blame.

But . . . take a look at the other options the Republicans had for candidates. Could any of them have done better than John and Sarah? They all sucked, and there was simply no one out on the Republican horizon that would have been any better.

We’ve said from the start, that no one is going to do everything we want — hell I disappoint myself sometimes too, and I’m on my side! — Obama is by far the best man at the helm of this ship of state in these troubling times. He will falter, and make some wrong moves, no doubt, but he will continue to steer this ship in the right direction.

Everyone is more than ready to see the light at the end of this tunnel, but that is probably a long way down the track. Let’s not let our impatience take over the vision.

Not the slightest hint of an inflection in that green line; expect it to get steeper. Nicely played, chimpy. Where would the nation be without you? Outside my window, a family across the street is selling their furniture–on the street. You’re going to have to wade in deeper, Barack.

    Bilbo, you are so right.
When people, particularly liberals, start blaming Obama for what they THINK he will do is really ticks me off.

Thanks for your support Marie. Fred, Unbelievable and I were out in the wilderness there for a while when we were calling SOD on his BS. I find it puzzling why so many people here kept quiet and didn’t say anything for the longest time. Or why some people (like Hiroshito) actually joined in and agreed with him.

It would be one thing if they blamed him for things he’s done. But they guess what he’s going to do and blame him in advance. Very annoying.

If we’re going with trolls from the past, I thought Bigfoot (the one who sold meat from his truck in New Mexico) could have been the dumbest one ever. Quite a feat I know, or in his case feet.

As for the economy, I work in NYC in the Financial District. It really is ugly, sort of like dead man walking to and from the subway each day. Even the companies who aren’t responsible for dragging down the economy and are not taking taxpayer money like mine are in a real world of hurt. My area, 40% of the staff was laid off. It’s just sad and it’s not looking to get better anytime soon. Though I must say, still see a lot of people coming and going out of AIG’s headquarters, I really don’t like them.

Who was the gun-nut, about 4 years ago? Oh, yeah; IRI. He was always good for a crank-and-NRA fueled blowout.

Exley was also good for chuckles, with his faux-professorial air, which deflated to “I know you are, but what am I?” ’s after about five posts.

  96. Shayne says:

barfly, you’re discounting the stupidity of the short lived trolls like Joker giving the dumbest award out so casually. And of course Daryll has got to be given consideration as dumbest ever. So many idiots, so little time.

You are correct Bilbo about jk and many thing’s…I for one have not been around much to post here, been at The Zoo more and sadly AWOL in general..The long hour’s of posting and research are pretty much over for me..Back ache’s abound..

Sorry if I let you down by not posting my thought’s but for some of us we have done all we can do and now must just skip over now and then…

I won’t be critical of much at this point, in a wait and see pattern, I am concerned though and sometime’s I wonder if the change everyone saught may be to late because of all the damage bull shit bush and his bunch did and continue to do….P.B.& J

as long as we’re reminiscing, who recalls O.Bigfoot? He was about as scrofulous an old dittohead as they come. Good fun. IRI I recall, too – noxious, that one. And then there was old Jason M. Hendler – enthusiastic he was, and oh-so poorly informed, but he’d at least try to hold some ground w/out running.

they’re all just so tee-jus, then and now.

    good times.

Daryll must be pretty conflicted these days. As eager as he claims to be for the Rapture, he’s also got a long-term plan to be a county commissioner. What if the Rapture happens the day before the election?

Oh, Lordy… I remember O Bigfoot. Talk about obnoxious… I recall hearing he got caught w/in 500 feet of an elementary school and had his parole revoked.

Apparently, we aren’t past the blame stage. This struggle of power is sickening. I have yet to hear anyone from the Republican side give a good plan. Seems like the only person working in our government is our President.

  107. Keith says:

“…the national unemployment rate soared to 8.1 percent — the worst since December 1983.”

December 1983 was, of course, nearly two years after Ronald Reagan took over from Carter and raised unemployment, lowered wages and benefits, weakened unions, and exploded the debt.

p.s.: I wish critics of stateofthedivision and hanshiro would really lay off for a while and stop their prejudicial views of what these two say. Stateofthedivision was NOT criticizing Obama he was just pointing out how bad the recession was becoming. And he knows extremely well it was Bush’s fault. I have read quite a bit of stateofthedivision and hanshiro and there is nothing wrong with what they say. I would guess the majority of posters here would agree with them if they didn’t begin reading them with a bias.
