Gingrich Strikes Back At Limbaugh: ‘You’re Irrational If You Don’t Want The President To Succeed’

In his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week, hate radio talker Rush Limbaugh repeated his assertion that he hopes President Obama “fails.” In the same speech, Limbaugh took a veiled shot at former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is one of his rivals for the leadership of the conservative movement, saying that people who say the GOP needs to move on from Ronald Reagan must be stamped out.

On NBC’S Meet The Press today, Gingrich fired back, saying that “you’ve got to want the president to succeed.” “You’re irrational if you don’t want the president to succeed because if he doesn’t succeed, the country doesn’t succeed,” said Gingrich.

Asked by host David Gregory if that clashed with the views of people like Limbaugh, Gingrich warned against calling for Obama’s failure:

GREGORY: Do you think that Republicans are discordant on that point, about whether they want him to fail or succeed?

GINGRICH: I don’t think anyone should want the president of the United States to fail. I want some of his policies to be stopped, but I don’t want the president of the United States to fail. I want him to learn new policies.

Watch it:

Gingrich’s warning echoes Bill Kristol’s break with Limbaugh on Fox News earlier this week. “Americans wish a new president well,” said Kristol. “They hope his policies succeed, as they should.”

Transcript:

GINGRICH: I thought Mort Zuckerman got it exactly right. This president has popularity, although the fact is that his current approval rating is about the same as George W. Bush at the same point in 2001. Fifty-eight percent for a new president is very normal because people, you’ve got to want the president to succeed. You’re irrational if you don’t want the new president to succeed because if he doesn’t succeed, the country doesn’t succeed. So, fifty, I mean, that’s not…

Tangential to financial mess [that Limbaugh wants to continue to fail]

Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Donald Kohn testified before that committee on Thursday that revealing names risked jeopardizing AIG’s continuing business. Kohn said there were millions of counterparties around the globe, including pension funds and U.S. households.

This is the real problem, these derivatives traded on an unregulated [dark] private exchange, perhaps as much as 600 trillion according to the BIS, is what AIG [in part] insured, but never held enough capital to actually cover. This is what is being bailed out. The sub-prime loans, bundled with other loans, were sliced up and packaged and sold to get these risks of the banks balance sheets. These derivatives are just bets, casino gambling, the taxpayer should not be bailing this type of financial ignorance out as they will just do it again.

How much longer before there is a true Churchly schism split for the Republican Party? How many factions are there that make up the Republican Party? There are the Religious Right which is reviled by the True Conservatives….the Bush/Reagan NeoCons want to kill the governmental baby in the bathwater and then the Limbots/Hannityoids who truly just believe what they hear come out of the mouths of their Radio Gods regardless of what is said.

This Steele/Limbaugh pissing match can quite possibly lead to someone much of an extremist for one of those factions being the new RNC leader leading to more failure for the RNC as America seems to be fed up with those extremists.

That’s right my precious…keep backbiting and in-fighting. It would be worst for them and best for Dems if one of those rightie factions goes spinning off into orbit where they can show their truly awful colors of what they stand for. We have them right where we want them!!!

  19. spencers mom says:

Newt doesn’t want President Obama to succeed, he is just establishing himself as the sole member of the GOP willing to stand up to Rushbo, thereby making all the apologists look like the spineless wimps they are.

Not that it will work in elevating Newt to leadership status in the party wandering in the desert, the party that sees Palin, Jindal and JoeTheNot as the faces of their future, but it will serve to divert Rushbo’s hate to Newt for a time.

It’s so obvious Gingrich, Limbaugh, and the David Gregory’s of the MSM want this fight to continue so no one will have enough time to figure out it was the reich wing policies of the last 8 years that plummeted our nation into financial peril. Of course, Limbaugh says it’s the Democrats who are pointing to the tree and saying, “Look at the birdie! Nice birdie! Everyone see the pretty birdie! Awwww, nice birdie, so pretty!”. Spit.

CONSERVATIVES HATE THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE AND ARE DETERMINED TO DESTROY IT.

  23. tarazan says:

Gingrich,as an old Washington politicians who knows how to play the political game sees no hope whatsoever for Republicans to keep repeating Limbaugh’s words and support him.

Gingrich knows what sells and what doesn’t.

He also knows that the party must distance itself from Rush Limbaugh rhetoric if the party is going to have any chance of winning anything.
After all it was Gingrich who won Republicans the US Congress, whehter he was right or wrong on many issues is another matter.

The issue here is Gingrich wants to play the game right, and that is to stay away from Bush and Rush for the time being.

To score some points,Gingrich now attacking Limbaugh’s thinking.

The difference between Gingrich and radio man Limbuagh is that Gingrich is a politician and he knows what sells and what doesn’t to the public, and ‘not wanting the President to succeed’ is not a seller.

But if this shows anything today , it shows how Republicans are now in disarray with no leadership and ability to re group at this time.

  24. Marie says:

Some repugniscum pundits (like Kristol and ex-rep Newt) can see the potential damage caused to the party by the Limbaugh sideshow.
Repugs are slow learners, though, so I expect that it hasn’t run its full course yet.
It’s funny to see how ONE comment from Obama, ONE comment from Emanuel has provoked dozens of questions to Gibbs, and hours of discussion in the media.
The repugs have fallen victim to one of their own plays – and that is a good thing.

As for Newt, if he is considering runing for office again, he is merely positioning himself. If he does run again, we will see that repugs are bereft of good people and must resort to the politicians of 10 to 20 years ago for a leader.

Hard to do, when he echoes their rhetoric. Newt’s also on record saying “government is the problem…” He’s steering away from Rovian tactics, and trying a weird form of political triangulation. He has to berate Rush, to have credibility with party centrists, but in such a way that it doesn’t alienate the base. I think in this instance, we have two bulls in a republican china shop.

This works for Newt because he knows Limbaugh will not attack him—attacking him won’t bring the controversy attached to attacking Obama or Michael Steele. It is like allowing simultaneous TV transmission on network TV and PBS. He needs to be the poster boy for the destruction of Satellite TV. He is leveraging his terrestrial network to benefit the satellite brand. Like Howard Stern, he needs to make a choice.

BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political power they’ve enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (the religious right and Limbaugh racists, fear-mongers and hate-baiters) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. It was a conscious political decision to manipulate and exploit emotions to win rather than to be intellectually and morally honest and lose.

Today, those Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devils they empowered, and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without accepting and even advocating values that are dividing and destroying their party. The survival of the Republican Party has become so dependent on radicalism, that they have no significant political power WITH or WITHOUT the support of America’s lunatic fringe.

The idiom about choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics.

“In fact, what we are living through is the worst financial scandal in history. It dwarfs 1929, Ponzi’s scheme, Teapot Dome, the South Sea Bubble, tulip bulbs, you name it. Bernie Madoff? He’s peanuts.
Credit derivatives – those securities that few have ever seen – are one reason why this crisis is so different from 1929.
    [...]
This was not caused by imprudent mortgage lending, though that was a piece of the puzzle. Yes, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were put on steroids during the ’90s, and some people got into mortgages who shouldn’t have. But the vast majority of homeowners paid their mortgages. Only about 5 to 10 percent of these loans failed – not enough to cause systemic financial failure. (The dollar amount of defaulted mortgages in the U.S. is about $1.2 trillion, which seems like a princely sum, but it’s not nearly enough to drag down the entire civilized world.)
    [...]
Credit derivatives are breaking and will continue to break the world’s financial system and cause an unending crisis of liquidity and gummed-up credit. Warren Buffett branded derivatives the “financial weapons of mass destruction.” Felix Rohatyn, the investment banker who organized the bailout of New York a generation ago, called them “financial hydrogen bombs.”
    [...]
The heart of darkness was the AIG Financial Products (AIGFP) office in London, where a large proportion of the derivatives were written. AIG had placed this unit outside American borders, which meant that it would not have to abide by American insurance reserve requirements. In other words, the derivatives clerks in London could sell as many products as they could write – even if it would bankrupt the company.
    [...]
So what do we do now? In 2000, the 106th Congress as its final effort passed the Commodity Futures Modernization Act (CFMA), and, disgracefully, President Clinton signed it. It opened up the bucket-shop loophole that capsized the world’s economic system. With the stroke of a presidential pen, a century of valuable protection was lost.

  85. curious says:

Newt, what a blowhard? What policies would he like to replace Obama’s with? Republican policies that got us into this quagmire?

Anything Obama does is better then the last eight years of Bush. And Reagan was a charmer, but let’s not forget some of his colossal failures.

1.A tripling of government spending. 2. We became a debtor nation for the first time under Reagan. 3. He destroyed the union of the air contollers because they wanted better equipment for safety reasons.
    4. He gave us Iran Contra.
    5. We had a double digit recession that lasted nearly two years.
    6. He emptied the mental hospitals out with former patients holding their RX. He thought most of them could be allowed outside. At the same time he cut the social services budget so there was no one to monitor the patients taking their meds, and most ended up on the streets. That was where our homeless battle got off the ground.
    7. He tried fudging the unemployment numbers by counting the military as part of the employment figures.
    8. He cut head start and school lunch programs. He claimed that catsup on the lunch program counted as vegetable. Actually it’s citrus not a vegetable.
    7. More than 120 of his administration were either jailed, investigated and or had to leave office under a cloud.
    8. He lied. He claimed to have been along with one of the military units in WW2 that liberated a concentration camp. Actually he never left Hollywood. He made some training films for the Army and made movies because most of the leading stars were overseas. He told a story about a welfare queen who drove a Cadillac and had a very expensive lifestyle on taxpayers. When the story was investigated one of the reporters said it was not true. Reagan smiled and said,”yes but it was a good story wasn’t it.”

This is the man loved by the GOP. As far as I can see Newt comes from the same kind of twisted logic. Limbaugh represents the GOP because that is all they deserve. To say that Reagan was not as bad as Bush is true. And it damns by faint praise. The Reagan era is over. And when you see what Bush has given us, he makes the Reagan era look great.

This whole thing looks orchestrated to me.

Newt speaking out. David Frum on ABC today, reminding viewers that Rush Limbaugh is less popular in the polls than …get this..Jerimiah Wright! And Frum is on the cover of Newsweek.

Here’s what Limbaugh is saying ….the Republicans MUST stay true to the Philosophy of Ronald Reagan.

Here’s the disconnect…What Reagan Said about Goverment is “The Govt. IS the Problem, and will only make things worse”

What the American People are saying to the Government…”DO SOMETHING”.

The American people (Most anyhow) no longer trust the Unfettered Free Mkt. to run things.

Not only have these Financial Geniuses been shown to be GREEDY and DISHONEST, but they were Also STUPID and INCOMPETENT. Their clever schemes have all but wrecked the world Economy.

Newt Knows this…and he knows the
American people know it too. :/

Gawd. I would love to had kicked a chair out from under his ass.

  97. pd says:

This whole thing is a carefully staged charade. I’ve heard Gingrich on Limbaugh’s show several times over the years and they can never unzip each other’s fly fast enough. Does anyone really think that they are now going to substantively disagree? Do you also think it coincidence that the only two righties who dare contradict Limbaugh, and as a result sound moderate and intellectually engaged, are two neocons; Kristol and Gingrich? The fact is that Limbaugh will say or do anything his dark masters bid him do. He is the Saruman of the Republican party. Powerful and clever, but ultimately, a tool. He will play a buffoon if they need it and sign paychecks that are large enough (and if they’ve got pics of him with underage Dominican boys). The current crop of rank and file Republicans are dismal failures with the American people and need to be replaced or brought to the neocon heel. All this froth is merely a start at four year repackaging of neocon ideology into the next, same as the last, American Idol.

  101. Hoodathunk says:

On topic, we have a member of the Republican party who seems to have his head somewhere other than buried up a psychotic entertainers butt. Why this is so is probably involved with a remote possibility that in two to three years he might decide to run for the Presidency. Considering his track record, it is smoke and mirrors.

What is the back story is a member of the Republican party (ignoring his personal reasons which are specious at best) who is challenging the idea that America might actually be considering listening to a college dropout, closet homosexual who has issues that would put most people into a closed medical facility.

Newt is going to repackage the old, tired, proven to fail republican free market failed republican strategies and put a bow on it this time. The monkeys love shiny things like bright ribbons.

Newt is the guy during the Bush years that gave a speech that he supported prohibiting “Free Speech”. Because Americans expressing their opinions gets in the way of dictatorial powers of his imagined presidency in America.

Yet the Newt does agree with the Oxy-viagra man. He wants Obama’s policies to fail. Obama being the president that is trying to impliment an economic recovery. Newt wants it to fail?

In other words Newt feels this country is so close to colapsing that they, (the royalty) can rebuild and restructure America and re write the constitution.

They hate America and that is why Newt could never bring himself to serve his country in the military to defend it.

I am stunned that a man as smart as Newt Gingrich badmouths Rush Limbaugh while espousing exactly the same position as Rush. Newt wants Obama to learn different policies. So does Rush. Newt does not want Obama to pursue the policies of socialism which are the policies he is promoting right now. Neither does Rush Limbaugh. Newt and Rush completely agree that Obama is on a completely wrong track. It is the semantic game of politically correct speech when Newt scorns Rush for saying “I hope he fails.”
Actually, I, too, hope that Obama fails to take this country into the sewer of socialism. That outcome would be a sad end for a great nation. But that is where Obama is taking us. I weep for the USA, and for me. Where do I go now to live free and prosper?

Even though I support Obama, I think it’s important to understand the conservative viewpoint, and at the moment, only one person in the country is articulating that — Gingrich.
