Rove: Bush Was Not One Of The Three Officials Who ‘Unanimously’ Decided To Bail Out Banks

On Fox News this afternoon, Karl Rove insisted that “this crew” in the White House has caused the collapse of the market, faulting the Obama administration for the economic crisis. He blamed Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in particular, saying Geithner could not point fingers at the previous administration because he was one of the three people who made the decision to bail out the banks in the first place, with last fall’s TARP.

In fact, Rove declared that only three people made the decision about the bank bailout — and none of them were then-President Bush:

Look, Geithner was sitting in the room, last year. Three people made the decision about the bank rescue package: Geithner, Ben Bernanke, and Hank Paulson, the Treasury Secretary.

Rove added that those three “unanimously made those decisions about the bank rescue.” Apparently they simply informed then-President Bush of their decision to give $700 billion to banks after the fact. Watch it:

Ironically, during the same interview, Rove declared that the Obama administration has “got to start accepting responsibility for the outcome of their decisions” — seconds before suggesting that Bush didn’t even play a role in one of the most consequential decisions of his presidency.

Apparently Bush wasn’t really “the decider” after all.

As a result of his mouth runoff, Karl needs to testify under oath to more things. Why did those three let Lehman fail? The real answer Karl, not the blather offered on TV.

Ironically, during the same interview, Rove declared that the Obama administration has “got to start accepting responsibility for the outcome of their decisions” — seconds before suggesting that Bush didn’t even play a role in one of the most consequential decisions of his presidency.

So then what the hell was he doing these pass eight years? Just taking up space? Then again, this “shocking” revelation explains a lot.

  3. stateofthedivision says:

President George W. Bush pushed and Congress passed the bailout package. Why is Karl rewriting history?

  4. Teowens says:

Last I checked, I kind of remember losing almost 40k out of my trust fund BEFORE Obama took office! And I have a feeling I’m not alone.

  5. lokidog says:

Not surprising Bush would be AWOL from any decision making as President, just like he was from his duties with the AL ANG.

He was the most incompetent CIC in this nation’s history, abrogating those duties to “the generals in the field”. AWOL again.

Criminal Negligence is but another charge to be added to Bush’s sad legacy.

  6. cynicalgirl says:

    He’s lying. As usual.

  7. AlGore says:

Then it’s a damn good thing that Geithner, Ben Bernanke, and Hank Paulson left when Bush did and don’t have their hands on the levers anymore!

It’s also a good thing that McCain didn’t even get close to the White House because if the young stud Messiah is already fatigued, McCain would be dead.

  8. christopher wiwi says:

So he really wasn`t the DECIDER?

  9. rastaman says:

if Rove can take down Geithner……then GIT ER DONE!

  10. Nevar says:

And, of course, if Al Gore had been allowed to assume his rightful office, none of this would be happening right now.

  11. misshusseinmolly says:

Lemme get this straight. Obama is responsible for everything that happens BEFORE he takes office, including the carnage left from disasters he inherited, but Bush is blameless for everything that happened on his watch, including disasters caused directly by his faulty policies?

    Oh yeah — IOKIYAR.

  12. raynman says:

Just out of curiousity… Bush gets a free pass from the media on 9/11 because he ‘inherited’ the problem from Clinton (even though Clinton emphasized the urgent nature of terrorism in almost every transition document, but I digress).

And yet, here we are, not even 40 days into the Obama Presidency, and the vultures are already circling ready to point their fingers at Obama’s lack of leadership

Standard Operating Procedure for that White House. Others, especially DICK Cheney, told the “high functioning moron” what to do and he unquestioningly did it.

The US does not produce anyhting other than spendable waepons. There is (was) no investiment in infrastructure, education, job creation (not military associated) and health. The Bush administration went on De-regulating the financial market and cut the taxes of the very rich. Everyone saw where it was going… Show me one thing that carries the “made in USA” today! Here in Australia and anywhere around the globe you buy products that are made in China or India.
Rove is a TRAITOR, a MANIPULATOR, a LIER and a WAR CRIMINAL.

  19. Jackie says:

Sometimes it’s better not to say anything because these statements sound like Bush let others run the country for 8 years. Now Hank Paulson was the Treasury Secretary and Bennie the Fed Chief and Tim’s boss. What person has the right to tell Hank/Ben they can’t give out the money as Tim didn’t have a vote and it didn’t matter what he thought. Now as for Obama causing this Recession well a complete idiot would believe the Senator Obama who wasn’t in Office in 2000 caused the down fall as the Bush Administration was in place. I guess Rove will say Obama’s policies were wrong from 2000 -2008 even when he wasn’t in office. Who even heard of Barack Obama before the ran for President anyway?

It was reported that the USNS Impeccable (!) was harassed by Chinese ships while sailing off the coast of China. It was reported that their crew was composed of civilian contractors. And boycott consumer crap exported by China.

Can’t someone shut Rove up already? Where’s his orange jumpsuit!

  24. hellinabucket says:

Is Mr. Rove saying that then President Bush wasn’t being fiscally responsible? That he didn’t have the ability or desire to stop such a thing? That 700 billion dollars can go out with little or no oversite and Mr. signing statement couldn’t do anything about it?

I believe Rove just admitted that Bush was a failure.

  30. misshusseinmolly says:

So what Rove is essentially claiming is that it’s TRUE that Bush was nothing more than a marionette?

Well, I suppose Rove chose this strategy as less preposterous than attempting to claim that Bush’s $700 billion package was good and Obama’s was bad.

  31. Michael Lafferty says:

Right, because—you know, the President—the once actually in charge at the time, apparently wasn’t in charge.

Whatever happened to the ‘buck stops here’ and the oh, so Republican construct of ‘individual responsibility?’

Is there seriously anyone out there who can be expected to believe this stuff. Oh, yeah: I forgot. ‘Clinton did it.’ ’nuff said…

  32. kasinca says:

Where was the president during this process? This republican excuse of blaming others is a little silly. W was president and if he was absent and delegated the decision to the other three, W is responsible. The president was AWOL again. Once an AWOL coward, always an AWOL coward. Sort of like once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.

  33. kasinca says:

Shouldn’t KKKarl be in jail? Just asking.

    ____________________________________________________________

This is because the “vultures” are Republicans scared to death that Obama’s policies will succeed where theirs failed. Their desperation is turning them into Tonya Harding going after Nancy Kerrigan’s kneecap, as their only hope of getting the crown back is to cripple the opposition.

Look for the right to spend a lot of time talking about Obama’s “inexperience”, “lack of leadership”, etc. They will even attack Obama on any issue where he is continuing Bush policies. And, of course, they will talk a great deal about “Obama’s fading popularity”, “Obama being a disappointment”, and “Obama’s lack of support” as much as they can (and instruct their paid trolls to do the same). Their assumption is that if they can say it enough, people will begin to believe it.

  37. Buckie Boy says:

I’m just amazed at how stupid Former Bush officials and the Republican Party think people are. We end a REPUBLICAN presidency and Obama inherits a 1.2 trillion dollar deficit. Yet the GOP wants to lecture on fisical responsibility? Obama has been in office for TWO MONTHS. Yet the economic crisis is his fault? We started nationalizing banks under a REPUBLICAN president. Yet Obama is being called a socialist? Oh the Irony!

Y’know, in a weird sort of way this kinda makes sense. Bush had been dialing it in for so long that something this huge, this complicated, this so dern hard to figur…I can easily see him saying “You three think this is the way to go? Alrighty, speech writers, write me something that sounds like I get it.” It was also during the campaign – appearing decisive would’ve been thought good politics, regardless of the quality of the decision. I am not defending Bush or Rove, but I think Bush had so checked out that what Rove is saying is actually plausible.

  42. sacomment says:

Bush was the ‘decider,’ but not so much ‘the listener.’

  47. boudin says:

This might be just the latest conservative meme, another organized attempt to re-write history and blame the opposition for their own transgressions. Former Australian PM Paul Keating is trying to sell the same stuff, saying Geithner set up the current crisis way back in 1997, during the Asian economic crisis:

    http://www.salon.com/tech/htww/?last_story=/tech/htww/2009/03/09/its_all_geithners_fault/

Keating went on to argue that, by frightening the Chinese into building their vast $US2 trillion foreign reserves, Geithner was responsible for the build-up of tremendous imbalance in the world financial system. This imbalance, in turn, according to Keating, contributed to the global financial crisis which has since devastated the world economy.

  48. nfwriter9999 says:

Rove assertion that he was in the know in the Bush White House. It has been common knowledge for the duration that he was intimately involved with all white house policy issues excepting military operations right up until the day of his firing.

That means he can be expected to spill his guts in regards all of the myriad of other ways in which the Bush administration behaved. If he doesn’t speak up, throw him in prison without further ado.

  49. squidbilly says:

  50. rmwarnick says:

The new book on the so-called “surge” by Tom Ricks reveals that General Petraeus decided on his own to pay off 100,000 Sunni insurgents in Iraq without consulting then-President Bush, who was nominally the commander in chief.

I think we’ve uncovered the biggest secret of the Bush presidency. He wasn’t really in charge at all.

  51. Carol A says:

Karl, Karl, Karl, is your memory that bad, or are you still rewriting story to salvage the Bush 43 legacy? Why is this criminal bloviating on TV and not sitting in jail?
This is not the first time in the past two weeks that Karl Rove’s version of history has been more than a little bit “off.” Perhaps Rove is practicing how to make up stories and feign memory loss for the day that he and Harriet Miers testify for Sen. Leahy’s committee. We can hear it from this guy already, the history of the Bush administration according to Karl. When he’s asked about the firings at the Justice Department, how many times will we hear Rove answer, “That is not my recollection,” “I do not recall,” “I have no memory of that,” “Not to my knowledge,” “That was not my understanding”? Somebody in that private meeting room needs to keep the count.

  52. Marie says:

So was Bush president or not?
Was he the “decider” or not?
Did the government operate with him or without him?

  53. moondancer says:

Karls memory is bad, but his recognition of a lie that can be repeated into truth is not. The propaganda answer he spews on this video is already the meme of most of the beltway MSM, all of the wingnut welfare centers and soon to be all you hear. Check the comments from the overwhelming amount of goopers on Sunday, the a**hole enablers like Chris Matthews and tell me I’m wrong.
The first spun lie of the year that worries me.

  54. texaslady says:

Newsweek quoted bush saying he was leaving it all up to Paulson to get out of the mess that Phil Gramm’s deregulation on derivatives brought about. Had a boss once that refused to sign anything, had others sign, wasn’t me, wasn’t my fault. When did bush EVER take the blame for his screw ups ? And anyone else notice how brown rove’s nose still is ?

  55. Patty says:

The second Karl Rove says, “Look,” it’s time to test his truth-o-meter:

    And, wow — our readings show . . . wait for it . . .

    He’s LYING AGAIN!!!

    Golly, Mr. Rove, you’re batting 1000 in your upside-down, truth-is-irrelevant, ends-justify-the-means world.

    buh-bye.

  56. Joe the Philosopher says:

If Rove is saying that the bankers of the Federal Reserve System are more powerful than the President or Congress, then he’s right. Control of the banking system must be taken away from the Zionists, as they have a racist, theocratic, undemocratic, imperialistic agenda to pursue.

Americans and the rest of the world must recognize that the Zionists are not looking out for them. When will Israel be declared an enemy of the United States?

  57. tomazulob says:

Wait a minute–I’m confused. I thought Rove could not testify as to what Bush did or did not do in front of Congress. Does this open the door to asking any questions about what Bush said or did now that he is blathering on and on about this nonsense?

  58. slappy magoo says:

You know the guys who try to piss people off to the point where they get punched or at least pushed around so they can sue those who assault them? That’s Karl on a tragically mammoth scale. His reason for being is to say stuff that’s probably, if not demonstrably, false. And as we’re forced to prove him wrong, he’s off on 3 or 4 more lies, the ultimate goal is to so thoroughly confuse the voting public, they won’t know what to believe, and sit home on Election Day out of fear of making the wrong decision. And a person who doesn’t vote is as good as a vote for a Republican. Their base is always motivated, if they can just make everyone else stay home, they’d never lose. It’s the philosophy they’ve used for over 30 years, and since it’s the only weapon in their arsenal, they’re going to keep using it. Sooner or later, it might work again.

The day Karl stops self-loathing & comes out of the closet is going to be an awesome day* because he’ll probably drop off the face of the earth, too busy wallowing in the joys of the open man-love he’s denied himself for so long to continue shilling for the GOP ON Fox News. Sure, there will always be threats of further subpeoanas (sp?) but by and large, Karl will be more interested in snurgling than having to peel off his leather-boy outfit to talk to Hannity or Beck.

*awesome except for the unfortunate souls who have to watch him dry-humping on the dance floor during 50 cent shooters night at Blu.
