Chas Freeman pulls his appointment.

Chas Freeman pulls his appointment.

A new statement from Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair’s office:

Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair announced today that Ambassador Charles W. Freeman Jr. has requested that his selection to be Chairman of the National Intelligence Council not proceed. Director Blair accepted Ambassador Freeman’s decision with regret.

Freeman’s appointment was met by strong right-wing outrage, provoking a “fierce behind-the-scenes lobbying campaign to torpedo the appointment.” The Wonk Room’s Matt Duss noted that Freeman voiced “some inconvenient truths about the Israel-Palestine conflict, and represent[ed] a challenge to the treasured neoconservative myth that US and Israeli interests are identical.” Today, Blair defended Freeman’s appointment under questioning from Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT).

Update Statement from Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY): "Charles Freeman was the wrong guy for this position. His statements against Israel were way over the top and severely out of step with the administration. I repeatedly urged the White House to reject him, and I am glad they did the right thing."
Update The Cable has a statement from Freeman on his withdrawal. An excerpt:
I have concluded that the barrage of libelous distortions of my record would not cease upon my entry into office. The effort to smear me and to destroy my credibility would instead continue. I do not believe the National Intelligence Council could function effectively while its chair was under constant attack by unscrupulous people with a passionate attachment to the views of a political faction in a foreign country. I agreed to chair the NIC to strengthen it and protect it against politicization, not to introduce it to efforts by a special interest group to assert control over it through a protracted political campaign.

Charles Freeman holds the Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS. He concentrates on the political economy of China and other parts of East Asia and on U.S.-China relations, particularly trade and economic relations. A second-generation “China hand,” he has lived and worked between Asia and the United States for his entire life. During his government career, he served as assistant U.S. trade representative (USTR) for China affairs. In this capacity, he was the United States’ chief China trade negotiator and played a primary role in shaping overall trade policy with respect to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, and Mongolia. During his tenure as assistant USTR, he oversaw U.S. efforts to integrate China into the global trading architecture of the World Trade Organization. Earlier in his government career, he served as legislative counsel for international affairs in the Senate.

  16. Joe the Philosopher says:

My guess is that the people who torpedoed Freeman’s are the same crowd he criticized: Zionist traitors. Our leaders will be smart if they quit sucking on their privates.

We’re totally sick of Israeli-Zionist control over America. Any politicians who come out against these thugs will be greatly admired.

  17. Realness says:

oh Fred, shut up. Adults are talking.

  18. Realness says:

I just read his Globalist article that was linked from the Wikipedia. He is a pragmatist with China, definitely forgives them of a lot (which I disagree with, but obvioiusly better than any GOP appointee), but I haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary.
It really does seem like that this was regarding Israel/AIPAC pressure. sigh.

and FYI Fred- progressives can disagree with each other and debate, and don’t have to be weak little sock puppets like you to get their pathetic POV across.

  23. Jackie says:

Refusing Freeman want change the facts that the Palestine Holocaust was done by Israel and seen around the World. Israel demands people remember the Jewish Holocaust but want people to forget the Palestine Holocaust. Israel is going down hill anyway with the President of Israel changed with rape and sexual hassarrment and PM Olmert charged with corruption. This shows the leadership of Israel is the same as the Bush Administration. As for Joe lip kissing Bush well he’s finished and he knows it. Once the old man who couldn’t remember what he ate for breakfast and his bimbo VP choice lost the Election, Israel no longer has a puppet country to use.

  24. curious says:

Gee Schumer, I guess they did it for you. At your suggestion?

Christ, as if you ever give a good suggestion. When was the last time?

  25. lokidog says:

Freeman was guilty of speaking the truth, for being a voice of reason and honesty vis-a-vis Israel and Palestine.

    That is unacceptable.

This is disturbing, considering Freeman was an appointment, not someone who needed an up or down vote. How pathetic is it that this government fears simply speaking the truth when it comes to Israel and Palestine?

So, President Obama, are you frightened of an honest debate, an honest and open assessment of what needs to be said and done regarding the Palestinian issue? Whomever you pick to replace Freeman should provide the answer.

  33. winddancer says:

There will NEVER be peace between Israel and Palestine (or the rest of most of the middle east) until the U.S. becomes an actual honest broker. As long as it’s always, “Israel, right or wrong” that’s expressed by so many in this country, including MANY on the Democratic side, it will continue to be a hopeless situation. Since Freeman’s appointment was for a non-Senate confirmed position, the administration should have stayed firm. There are other reasons to be concerned about Freeman, but his honest words about Israel are NOT one of them!!!

Let’s see how God Blesses those who caused the Palestine Holocaust. Yes and God might even Bless Israel President Moshe Katsav who is indicted for rape and sexual harrassment and then there’s the corruption charges against PM Ehud Olmert. Now if those are the examples of who God Blesses then we have some serious problems. As Israel soldiers followed the orders of Livni to send the Palestine people to UN Safe Houses then use Cluster Bombs to make sure all are killed and even burned to death all in the name of God. This says alot about Israel these days and it has nothing to do with God more the workings of Satan.

“Rabbi Lerner, author of The Left Hand of God: Taking Our Country Back from the Religious Right (Harper San Francisco, 2006) is not only rabbi of Beyt Tikkun but is also the editor of TIKKUN magazine: A Bimonthly Jewish Critique of Politics, Culture and Society. TIKKUN is one of the most respected intellectual/cultural magazines in the Jewish world, but also one of the most controversial because of its stand in favor of the rights of Palestinians, on the one hand, which locates him in the minds of many as the leader and most prominent spokesperson in the U.S. of Jewish supporters of the Israeli peace movement, and on the other hand, because of his stand critiquing the anti-religious and anti-spiritual biases of the secular Left, insisting that they need to address the spiritual hunger of Americans as equally important to their material needs (he calls this a hunger for “meaning” and says that for many Americans the desire to transcend the individualism and selfishness of the competitive marketplace and connect their lives to higher meaning is as important as any interest in money or things, and that one reason why people who might on purely economic grounds be supporting the liberal and progressive social change movements actually end up supporting the Right is that the Left doesn’t have a “politics of meaning”). He is the co-author with Cornel West of a book entitled Jews and Blacks: Let the Healing Begin, and several other books.”

Yet another side of Dennis Blair:

It would be difficult to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and hard to tell which combination of carrots and sticks might convince Iran’s leaders to abandon that goal, the US Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, told the Senate Tuesday.

According to Blair’s testimony, “only an Iranian political decision” – a decision he noted could always be reversed – would “plausibly keep Iran from eventually producing nuclear weapons,” as Teheran already had “the scientific, technical and industrial capacity eventually to produce nuclear weapons.”

“We assess convincing the Iranian leadership to forgo the eventual development of nuclear weapons will be difficult,” he told the Armed Services Committee in prepared remarks. “Some combination of threats of intensified international scrutiny and pressures, along with opportunities for Iran to achieve its security and goals might – if perceived by Iran’s leaders as credible – prompt Teheran to extend the halt to the above nuclear weapons-related activities. It is difficult to specify what such a combination might be.”

  91. ferdigrofe says:

I apologize. It was attorney general Palmer whom Wilson let Debs prosecute. Attached are two sentences from Wikepedia:

Learning of Deb’s ill health, Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer prepared a clemency petition on Debs’s behalf for a presidential pardon in order to free Debs from prison, feeling it would damage the administration if he died in custody. [35] Upon being given the petition, President Wilson replied “Never!” and wrote ‘Denied’ across it.[32]

On December 25, 1921, Republican President Warren G. Harding commuted Debs’ sentence to time served; Debs was released from prison and was warmly greeted by President Harding at the White House: “I have heard so damned much about you, Mr. Debs, that I am very glad to meet you personally.”

Poor little troll. You like to screw around with us but dont much like it when we slap you around which is all an ignorant troll like you deserves do you. I dont hate you. You flatter yourself. You are insignificant. I amuse myself by swatting you like the fly your IQ most resembles. You dont even exist in my universe except as entertainment

Then you do know. A so called liberal Democrat had his attorney general, Biddle (if I am not mistaken) prosecute Debs for treason or tripe to that effect, and a Republican President from Ohio, whom many decry, pardoned him. Perhaps the world is a bit more complicated than many want to believe.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Yeah, I read his biography its not that accurate to call the man behind the Palmer raids a liberal. He was NOT tried for treason rather violating the espionage act. The act he went to prison for was giving an anti war speech. They considered it tampering with the war effort or something. ANYONE who thinks the world or most any part of the world is simple is deluding themselves. The most common thing I tell people when in REAL political discussions is…its not that simple.

Its a ludicrous smear done by simpleminded people who see everything in simplistic Manichean terms. I disapprove of Israels foriegn policy and so does my wife who is in fact a Sephardic Jew.

What us this? Is it a discussion group for drunken truck drivers? Civil discourse is mandentory for a clear exchange of discussion. Never forget that one can learn from folks who disagree with you, however it is not possible with emotional smut and personal attacks.
As a general rule of thumb, methinks that israeli defense forces are not in the business of killing children. That is the historical M.O. of their opponents.

  98. TheAntichrist says:

The problem with some of us liberals is that we fail to realize that we do have some in our fold (like Freeman, Zbigniew Brzezinski etc.) Who have admiration for Communist governments and the communist tactics they use to “control their populations.”

Just read some of their books and you’ll get the hint.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Democratic party adopts the Chinese’ one child rule (which actually is less barbaric than our partial birth abortion policy).

  99. Bullsmith says:

In the short term the AIPAC band win, as they always do, but in the long term this kind of ever-more obvious meddling by Israel and it’s domestic supporters into every level of the government of the US is going to turn large swathes of public opinion against Israel. The tail wags the dog in this relationship, and eventually the dog’s going to mind.

    per the above: TheAntichrist Says:
This point is at the very heart of the problem progressives present to those they are trying to bring to their side. When faced with those within our ranks whose true goal is to attain power, that would only use our agenda to lessen freedom and diminish personal choice, we will side with our own, even when it means we diminish the very values we espouse. If we allow these few to attain leadership within the movement, then we have lost the moral high ground to those we oppose and the facts will become immaterial. If the charges leveled at Freemen were false, then to disprove them should have been done easily. If not, how does his appointment legitimize or further the progressive movement in the eyes of others who have not chosen a side in the greater debate.
My previous post was not an attempt at piety, nor to talk over anyone. It was an attempt to substitute reasonable disagreement for name calling and have this become a discussion amoung civil adults. No matter the subject, until the shrill screaming stops, there is no discussion to be had.
