Lieberman Joins Republican Attacks On Chas Freeman: ‘I’m Concerned’

At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing this morning, Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) questioned National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair about his selection of Chas Freeman to head the National Intelligence Council.

Freeman’s views on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute have raised concerns among neoconservatives weeks ago. In recent days, Freeman’s critics have made “unpersuasive attempts at describing [him] as ‘hostile’ to Israel; a radical ideologue; and an apologist for human rights abuses are what remains of the opposition.”

Yesterday, a group of Senate Republicans on the Intelligence committee wrote a letter to Blair questioning Freeman’s selection, and distributed it to the press. “Given our concerns about Mr. Freeman’s lack of experience and uncertainty about his objectivity, we intend to devote even more oversight scrutiny to the activities of the NIC under his leadership,” the senators wrote.

This morning, Lieberman amplified the Republicans’ criticisms. “I’m concerned,” Lieberman told Blair, expressing his worries over “statements that [Freeman’s] made that appear either to be inclined to lean against Israel or too much in favor of China.” Blair offered this cogent defense of Freeman:

A mutual friend said about Ambassador Freeman — who I’ve known for a number of years — there is no one whose intellect I respect more and with whom I agree less than Ambassador Freeman. Those of us who know him find him to be a person of strong views, of inventive mind from an analytical point of view – I’m not talking about policy – and that when we go back and forth with him, a better understanding comes out of those interactions. That’s primarily the value that I think he will bring.

Watch it:

“The concern about Ambassador Freeman is that he has such strong policy views,” Lieberman responded. Matt Duss notes that Freeman is “apparently the only person in Washington not allowed to have any” strong opinions.

Update Max Blumenthal notes that Steven Rosen, "a former director of the American Israel Political Affairs Committee due to stand trial this April for espionage for Israel, is the leader of the campaign against Freeman’s appointment."

Until the Republican’s avowed strategy of obstruction is rescinded, I would assume that this action does not represent an actual objection, but is just an attempt to muddy the waters.

No, anyone can have strong opinions, as long as they’re in line with Joe’s. You can, for example, hold the strong opinion that terrorism, mass murder, and oppression are bad, but not when those acts are committed by an official “good” country such as Israel.

Eleventh? Try first. Most of the others have been rescinded. (Try telling our military “Thou shalt not kill” with a straight face.)

Joe Lieberman, who campaigned so hard against Barack Obama, saying he would be bad for Israel, was in Jerusalem endorsing the Likud leader. “I have no doubt that with Netanyahu’s government here we will have good and positive relations with the Obama administration,” said Lieberman, whose own views are closer to Bibi’s than to his rival, Kadima leader Tzipi Livni.”

Would it not make complete and logical sense to assume that for every single thing done or said by the republicans?

    Their strategy IS “to obstruct”.

Israel already has a Lieberman, and he’s a 5 times more dangerous

    Avigdor Lieberman, 50

Leader of Yisrael Beiteinu, secular hard-right party. Moldovan-born immigrant who wants Israeli Arabs to pledge loyalty to the Jewish state or lose the vote. Wants borders redrawn – unacceptable even to moderate Palestinians – to put more than 100,000 Israeli Arabs in future Palestinian state. Has faced corruption allegations. Israel may have to act militarily alone in Iran “in worst-case scenario”. Has suggested treating Gaza as Russia did Chechnya.

Well – WE (that is the American taxpayers as an entity) donate how much to Israel annually? And what do we, the taxpayers, get in return for THIS welfare?

(It becomes increasingly apparent that conservatives LOVE welfare, socialization, and entitlement — just so long as it doesn’t go to middle-class and espescially not poor people).

Um, Joe? Is your main concern that Mr. Freeman may actually possess “objectivity”? That’s what it sounds like to me. As opposed to you and your Israeli neocon leg-humpers on the Intelligence commitee who distort every fact presented to you regarding Israel in order to conform with your personal feelings.

The humorous thing about that is after getting repeated humiliated yesterday, a poster told Archie B, “See Archie B this is the part where you start thinking of your new name…”

Just because Blair and Freeman have differing views than the Republican party does not mean that they are the wrong views. We do need to be focusing on our foreign policy, especially in Asia and the Middle East. There are 963 million people, throughout the world, that go to sleep hungry every night. The Borgen Project (www.borgenproject.org) has some great ideas to help not only feed these people, but to give them tools to grow food and become a prosperous nation. If this is accomplished it would help us to reach the Millennium Goals that were established by 191 countries.

  43. tko says:

I don’t think it would be bad for someone in Obama’s administration to actually be objective and not entirely biased for Israel at a time when Israel’s next or new leader has been described as BiBi (Netanyahu)the bigot in the Jerusalem Post “Two positive things happened,” he told a conference of haredi government officials in Nir Etzion this week. “Members of the haredi public seriously joined the workforce. And on the national level, the unexpected result was the demographic effect on the non-Jewish public, where there was a dramatic drop in the birth rate.” Recently, it was found that 10% of Palestinian children have stunted growth and in some areas 30% and that at least 60 Palestinian women have given birth at the Israeli checkpoints, where they were not allowed to pass through to hospitals, resulting in the deaths of 36 children. Should we continue to turn a blind eye to the activities of our allies or allow someone into the Obama administration that might take notice of such things.

  48. Joe the Philosopher says:

I know that there are many people throughout the world who are constantly looking for the right adjectives to describe Joe Lieberman. Here are a few reminders: Arrogant, hypocrite, Zionist nut-job, traitor, pompous, smug, stupid, sanctimonious, boring, stupid-looking, too holy for his own good, a guy who flunked his Bar Mitzvah, a PTTS survivor who had overdosed on Holocaust films, a simple, common idiot of the chosen people, repugnant, disgusting, arrogance (worth mentioning twice), and other turn-offs.

Although Joe has been offered numerous free, one-way tickets to wherever he would like to go, Joe has decided to remain at his post and continue to make the tough calls. Aren’t we lucky to have this great mind working for us?

Only in America. What a place.

  49. curious says:

Gosh, I thought Lieberman was dead. He can’t hold onto a thought or a policy for very long. If he get’s re-elected I will be surprised. He has no strong beliefs in anything except getting re-elected.

  50. mary says:

If he gets re-elected, it’ll be with the support of status quo, including the Dems.

He got all of the entrenched interests’ support last time. Big name Democrats supported and campaigned for him in the CT Democratic primary and then, when he lost to Lamont anyway, Republicans gave him lots of money (pretty much ignoring their own candidate, as the DNC did Lamont), he started his own party and still then it took a last-minute faux web site drama to put him over the top state-wide.

He received $1.5M in the final weeks of the race as an Independent from Republican donors.

  51. Joe the Philosopher says:

I can understand why Nazis, Skinheads, Democrits and other Jew-haters despise Lieberman.

These same people say it is a crime for Israel to defend itself against a terrorist regime with a stated purpose of eliminating Israel.

All I’m waiting for now in the US is the beer-hall putsch and Kristnallnacht. Jews are less than 2% of the US population, and while they have loyally supported Democrits based on the many false promises of those creatures, they too will be stabbed in the back, as they were before. The isolationist and pro-Islam Obama regime will realize the final solution under guide of “pro-choice ethnic cleansing.” Forced abortions of undesirables such as Republicans and Jews are not far off. Heil Obama and the fourth Reich!

  56. John F. Kennedy says:

As the heir to the Kennedy drug smuggling business, I think I have the inside knowledge to state that you are the one that is mistaken. Of course, I could litter my reply with expletives and vulgarities, like you, but that really only displays a lack of intellectual providence, no? Being a Democrit as you obviously are, though, a lack of ability to reason is of course presumed, and nowadays a requirement. Yo, yo, g-dog, kill whitey, but buy my CD first.

My pal Madoff is of course a Democrit. He is deep in the pockets of Democrits, having been used by them to achieve their Democritical objective of buying the votes of the poor to build their base. That only works while there is money to buy votes with, though. My daddy used scotch during prohibition to do that, but when alcohol was regretably made legal, I didn’t have that benefit. The mob was not very understanding, and whacked me in my prime. If only I had been able to fulfill my dream of a worldwide war starting in Vietnam, non-stop mistresses and drug exploitation of the poor, I would be emporer of the US.

Of course, the greatest idea I ever had was to demonize the conservatives for doing things I did much better. Nixon was an amateur. I had tapes of everyone, not that I knew what to do with them, and quite frankly, the tapes of LBJ whipping out his Johnson and slapping women in the face with it, while amusing, are really not much better than your typical Hollywood liberal at their best on Youtube. I was King. I was royalty. Nobody comes close. Carter? Loser redneck peanut farmer. Clinton? I wouldn’t touch Lewinsky, not even with a cigar. And his wife? Puhleease! One word – cankles.

Since I’ve been dead for a while, I haven’t kept count, but I think the number of murdered/aborted American children is around 100 million or so. Of course, most of these are poverty level minorities, which is great as far as Democrits are concerned, so I have to also disagree with you about who are the best mass murders. Clearly, the Democrits have that title. Once minorities leave the poverty level, they become conservatives, which is of course bad for Democrits. So, keep them dumb, keep them poor, and keep them on welfare. My greatest idea. I may not make as mcuh money from my daddy’s special arrangements from booze runners during prohibition as the crack and heroin sellers do, but that trust money does finance my kids to have fun crashing their planes into the ocean and pretending to be politicians, at least until even the Democrits realize that they would be Blagojevich-level buffoons, and kill their chances for an unelected appointment.

Finally, Israel was, of course, a Democrit idea. That’s why they love us! Sure, its wrong to go into a country and kick people out to form a new state, but lets face it, the Nazi’s failed and left that nasty mess in the laps of the Democrits, who also, incidentally, dropped the bombs on Hiroshimsa and Nagasaki (I love the fact that nobody cares about that!). Jeez, if we can kill a couple million innocent Japanese, why not kill some inncocent Paletinians to get votes from Jewish voters? Of course, Obama now sees that it is more advantageous to abandon Israel in favor of his own religion, but “he won,” right? So he can do anything he wants. He won’t, of course, ever re-establish Camelot, like I did, and once his Islam pals nuke Washington, he’ll be dead like me, but at least he’ll have his 40 virgins. But trust me, I’ll take one Marilyn Monroe to 40 virgins any day. ;)

  68. Harry Truman says:

John, I am frankly ashamed with you. All of these sordid details about blowing syphilitic lepers have nothing whatsoever to do with this string. The issue is whether Freeman has the balls to do what needs to be done, and to exterminate the Palestinians, which I did my best to do. It was so easy with Japan, and why we couldn’t just nuke the ragheads in ‘50 is a mystery to me. Freeman clearly would rather nuke the Jews than the Muslims, or just let Iran do that for him, with China’s help. Granted, we have a lot of Muslims and Chinamen in the US, and their votes could help keep us Damnocrats in power, even if we piss off the Jews, but Hitler showed us how to deal with the Jews! It really doesn’t matter – as long as the Damnocrats stay in power, we can keep those self-righteous Republican bastards from any kind of “morals” based governance. What the heck are “morals” anyway? If I can kill a bunch of innocent Japanese and a bunch of innocent Palestinians and still be one of the best loved US Presidents of all time, why not just kill anyone that we need to so we can re-write history to make us the good guys? John, lets face it, you were a novice. I would have wiped out the mob, Hoover was begging me to let him do it, but they paid too well, and had the unions in their pockets, to boot. But I never would have let them off me, only an idiot would do that. Didn’t your dadday teach you how to deal with the mob? Apparently not.
