Steele Goes From Being ‘Pro-Life His Entire Adult Life’ To Believing Abortion Is An ‘Individual Choice’

steelebus.jpg GQ has a new interview with Michael Steele, in which the embattled RNC chairman says that he is pro-choice:

GQ: Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion?

STEELE: Yeah. I mean, again, I think that’s an individual choice. [...]

GQ: Are you saying you don’t want to overturn Roe v. Wade?

STEELE: I think Roe v. Wade—as a legal matter, Roe v. Wade was a wrongly decided matter.

GQ: Okay, but if you overturn Roe v. Wade, how do women have the choice you just said they should have?

STEELE: The states should make that choice. That’s what the choice is. The individual choice rests in the states. Let them decide.

Steele is shifting from what he has said in the past. As recently as November 2008, he supported the GOP platform on a constitutional ban on abortion, although he was “skeptical” of tinkering with the Constitution:

In an editorial board meeting at The Washington Times on Tuesday, Mr. Steele clarified his stance, saying that he thinks Roe should be overturned as a sloppy piece of decision-making, favors state regulation on abortion, and supports the Republican party’s platform that calls for a constitutional ban on abortion. … Mr. Steele added however that he is skeptical of changing the Constitution, fearing that the process will get out of control.

Steele, in fact, presented himself as a strong pro-life candidate when running for the RNC chairmanship. Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said that Steele had “shown a commitment to the values that were once the GOP’s guiding light,” including on abortion. Here’s how Steele pitched himself on his campaign website (cached site here):

No one should ever doubt Michael Steele’s commitment to life. He has been pro-life his entire adult life. In 2006 he was endorsed for US Senate by National Right to Life and Maryland Right to Life. He ran as a staunchly pro-life candidate in a state that rarely elects pro-life candidates.

In its Oct. 25, 2006 endorsement of Steele’s U.S. Senate run, the Washington Times wrote, “Mr. Steele is staunchly pro-life (parting with many Republicans who support abortion in cases of rape and incest) and he is a free trader.”

This announcement will likely add fuel to the fire of his critics, who are already upset that he slighted their real leader.

Update Today on MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews read the abortion segment of the GQ interview and exclaimed, "I have no idea what this man is saying. Is he for human rights or states' rights? He ought to know the difference. Does a person decide, or does the state legislature, or the state government, or the state court?"

When one tries to be “all things to all people,” one generally loses one’s soul. Michael Steele is the consummate “yes man,” the Good Soldier of the Reich. He can no longer remember what he said and to whom he said it. Removal from chairmanship: imminent.

oh man.. now they will REALLY get rid of him faster than you can say GOP… this party has A LOT still to sort out.. (and: the reason they’re still in so much trouble is that too many of them are still on the fringe when it comes to social issues.. still stuck in the middle of the last century, still living in a fantasy world.. they have far too many of their members still in that mindset.. their troubles (electorally and otherwise) will not be solved until a substantial amount among their members step into the 21st century and get a dose of reality check..)

Strange how this simpleton refuses to capitalize “God”.

From this rather stark statement, one may conclude that either A simpleton believes that God (or “god” as the case may be) proves things by pronouncing them in ancient, oft-translated texts, or he believes that nothing proves anything.

He certainly doesn’t believe that the scientific method, i. e. observing nature, formulating theories, testing those theories against new observations, and accepting or revising those theories, proves anything.

This is indeed a strange one.

  92. McWars says:

A woman has her logic for terminating a pregnancy, and a court has their logic for terminating the life of a defendant. Mind you, courts have probably put innocent people to death.

  123. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I thought you libs believed in darwinism? Only the strongest survive? Now, all of the sudden, you care? Hmmm..

This Right Wing Lie employs the false premise. The poster is claiming that Darwinism is a theory that says “Only the strongest survive.” This is factually, scientifically, and provably incorrect. Darwin’s theories do not suggest that the “strongest” survive, but the “fittest”. And in this sense, “fittest” means “most fit to the environment in which they are trying to survive.” It has nothing to do with strength, it has to do with adaptability. If you cannot change with your environment, and find some genetically inheritable advantage that will help your offspring survive, you will not survive, no matter how “strong” you are. The Right Wing deliberately (or ignorantly) uses this misinterpretation of Darwin to justify their own brute force, “shoot to kill first so you don’t have to bother asking questions later”-approach to conflict resolution.

The Right Wing does not appeal to reason, it appeals to emotion. And when your emotions are fired up, your capacity to think rationally diminishes. This is how they gain support for their platitudes (which are not ideas). This is how they win elections, despite having nothing to offer. The Left Wing needs to find an emotional way to connect to people in order to get them to support doing the things we all know need to be done. The problem has always been that’s it’s easier to get people to hate something (through fear and outright lies) than it is to get them to love something (which requires some level of trust, which can take time). This is our challenge. Find a way to connect to people emotionally to get them to like the idea of having a government that works for their best interests and not those of Corporate America. Unfortunately, this challenge is made harder by the fact that Corporate America controls the media (in a conservative-leaning way.) Maybe we need to go back to what worked in 1776 – handing out pamphlets on the street corner.

More Earmark Debate: Even Obama Gets One

The incomparable Jonathan Allen of CQ finds Barack Obama’s name on one of the earmarks in the spending bill that just passed the House, which is essentially a leftover bill from last year to fund the current fiscal year.

President Obama, who took a no-earmark pledge on the campaign trail, is listed as one of dozens of cosponsors of a $7.7 million set-aside in the fiscal 2009 omnibus spending bill (HR 1105) passed by the House on Wednesday. . . . The $7.7 million earmark — for Tribally Controlled Postsecondary Vocational Institutions — is cosponsored by a long list of other members of both chambers. The program appeared in Senate report language last year but its sponsors were not identified at that time.

UPDATE: The White House bit back at Allen’s report Thursday afternoon, pointing to a letter, dated April 2, 2008, in which Obama, along with 36 other Senators, requested an increase in funding for the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Program, which administration officials say led, after several more bureaucratic twists and turns, to Obama’s name being attached to the $7.7 million earmark.

In an afternoon press conference, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs maintained that the request to fund the program should not be considered an earmark request, in part because there was no dollar figure attached to the request. “The president, as a senator, did not request earmarks for the final two years he was in the Senate,” Gibbs said. Separately, I am advised that a request has been made to appropriators to remove Obama’s name from this provision in the spending bill.

Here we see another Right Wing Lie that’s managed to find its way into the Belief Centers of some people’s minds. In fact, it was Republican Senator John McCain who took a “No Earmarks” pledge. Democratic Senator Barack Obama (the eventual winner) said that he would reform the earmark process, and look at each one to see if it benefits the entire nation. Some, he said, are useful. Some are not.

President Obama also correctly noted that some of the loudest critics of earmarks will brag about the ones that benefit their own states or districts. This kind of behavior (bragging about earmarks you “opposed”, but helped get in the bill) is called “hypocrisy”. Because many of them are unable to see hypocrisy, many get caught presenting the appearance of a conflict of interest in their public service. But that’s another problem.

    51. dbadass Says: this is especially true when the choice employed to disrespect a name was made to disrespect two people simultaneously. Do your thing. It isn’t my business, I just hold myself to a different standard

Bully for you. Making a cultural reference is the domain of every and any comedian or comedy shtick, from Rush’s name on down. The ‘Sanjaya’ I referred to was publicly panned much along the lines of William Hung.

Sanjaya was a fad, not equal to the attention accorded him and was kept around to exploit his clearly unfounded popularity and poor suitability to be a singing star.

Much the way Gupta was kept on CNN despite his being discredited on more than one occasion. You wanna play scolding schoolmarm, knock yourself out, but don’t dictate behavior or presume motives to me, chuckles, when you didn’t understand the reference.

    Everyone knows…
… In America, the right to life ends at birth.

  181. Max-1 says:

    joe cantwell,

Anyone NOT see that train wreck approaching?

    1) The daughter of a Separatist father…
    2) With a “Ya betcha” mom…
    3) Who was pregnant before the age of 18, UN-WED!
    4) Logical conclusion…
… An EVILgelicle family resting their moral laurels on the sanctity of marriage so as to raise the children with TWO parents. Who didn’t guess that the TWO parents would end up being the GRAND PARENTS doing the raising?

Shocked – I tell ya! SHOCKED!

  182. enough says:

    Hey Mr. GOP

Could you go over that one more time–slowly. Actually, maybe we could reduce it to one question: Do you support a woman’s right to choose? YES or NO?

  183. dbadass says:

and so is going to sleep

  184. G J Lau says:

What was it Dan rather used to say: All hat and no cattle? That pretty much sums up Michael Steele. He was our Lt. Gov. under Bob Ehrlich. Two completely worthless politicians.

  185. SnoBird says:

    Steele is a boob,

The day the Republican Party becomes more than an a party of old white men and develops an ovary, we’ll talk.

Ironically, studies show that red states buy more porn. Utah being number one in porn consumption.

    P.S.

A shout out to Rachel Maddow. I adore you!

Every so often you mention stuff I care about. Just kidding . . . happens every night (5-7).

  186. SnoBird says:

Steele, keep your word. . . rap off with Colbert.

  187. perris says:

if I am a lifeguard and someone is drowing in shark infested waters, I am NOT supposed to go in and save that person

carrying a fetus to term is dangerous against your own life and ruinous to your physical health

a fetus does not get to force it’s will on the host, the host decides if they want to sugger the health liabilies

    this is the real point

the court rightly suggested that once the fetus can survive if removed from the womb then it becomes too late and a contract has been made with fetus and host, the host is obligated haveing waited far to long

  188. SnoBird says:

Oh, yeah, that wouldl be Steele, P.D. ain’t takin’ his calls, Chris Brown could be in jail, K. West is busy with a prostitute . . . hell, how’s Steele ever goin’ hang it if the hood refuses his calls? Perhaps he needs to offer more bling bling . . . worked for Burris.

Damn, what’s it take to get taken seriously in this country. Maybe if someone shot me with an unregistered mK47? Hell yeah, that’d show my unrelenting commitment to the second amendment . . . I would be dead, but committed.

  189. SnoBird says:

    perris,

    You are an idiot.

The Catholic Church just kicked out the mother of an 11 year-old girl who was raped by her stepfather. She was carrying twins. The Catholic Church also booted the doctors that performed the operation.

The Catholic Church said that it did not excommunicate the raping step father (also accused of raping other children in the family) because the crime of abortion was worse than the crime of rape.

    Go figure. Catholic Church sux.

  190. backup says:

This sounds crazy from Steele, but I think talk of Republicans supporting individual choice is positive. (although I’m sure it will be fleeting).

Republicans should not pursue an overturn of Roe v. Wade.

But, trying to say that women should have individual choice and that individual choice is for each individual state to decide, is confusing.

  191. SnoBird says:

    perris,

Wack job. Get yourself an ovary, then pontificate.

  192. SnoBird says:

I’m thinking if perris never got laid in his life.

Ick. I haven’t even met him . . . but giant ick coming from here. If any child resulted from what must have been a rufees inspired night . . . abort. . . Houston we have a problem . . . abort.

  193. backup says:

Republicans won’t have a clear message on abortion until they decide who they want to be. The must decide if they are the party of personal liberty or the party of christian theocracy.

If conservatives think that the real problem is aborting the fetus, they should support policies that reduce the amount of abortions. Abstinence ain’t it. Sex education and birth control will reduce the amount of unwanted pregnancies that result in the abortions. Placating the religious right in abstinence only, is fueling the abortion problem they claim to abhor.

    Safe, legal, rare.

  194. SnoBird says:

I know I’m talking too much, but this perrin is saying, “Pretent I’m a lifeguard” okay you idiot (I can picture you in the lifeguard stand. Pretend someone is drowing in shark infested waters, I am NOT supposed to go in and save that person carrying a fetus to term is dangerous against your own life and ruinous to your physical health

    “someone is in harms way”)

For one thing, if you’re a life guard, your job is to rescue.

Second, assuming that you are a lifeguard, my biological integrety is so far out of your expertise that if you were to give me a physical exam, I would sue you.

Thirdm you are an idiot trespassing and committing third degree felonies while trying to pass off your icky need to invade my life.

Leave women alone. We know how to take care of ourselves, but for totally sick men like yourself, we do just fine.

  195. SnoBird says:

    P.S.

That should have been first degree felonies. . . stuff you go to the clink for for dozens of years.

I think that this is a middle eastern mentality, that women are subservient and that men dictate . . . Well, welcome to America . . . statistically, Middle-Eastern women, even those from impoverished countries, leave their men within about six years of coming to America. Again, go figure.

As you neanderthals write on websites, consider that many of the women on these same webesits are better educated, informed and monied than you are.

  196. woke says:

Is it not hypocrisy to say abortion is an individual woman’s choice, and then say it’s a state’s rights issue?

    Just sayin’

  197. backup says:

woke. you’re correct. It is either a right or it isn’t a right. If it is a right, then why should you empower an individual state to take away that right? If conservatives are advocating that the decision on whether it is a right or not, belongs in the hands of individual states, they cannot make a general judgement of whether it is a right or not. By leaving that decision to individual states, they are saying there is not universal truth on the subject, it a subjective matter to be determined by each of the individual states. It is then a very small step to say, if it’s a subjective matter, why is it a matter for the state at all.

Conservatives cannot have it both ways.

  198. Nevar says:

    “Not me baby…”
    “Not gonna happen baby…”

    I wonder what’s underneath all of Steele’s baby talk…..

  199. CageyCretin says:

I am not entirely clear on perris’ point. So, let me examine it a littel, as there is some I agree with here:

    perris Says:

if I am a lifeguard and someone is drowing in shark infested waters, I am NOT supposed to go in and save that person

Ummmm… not true, actually. Intersting set up for the argument that follows, but not true.

carrying a fetus to term is dangerous against your own life and ruinous to your physical health

    Yes. Actually very true.

a fetus does not get to force it’s will on the host, the host decides if they want to sugger the health liabilies

That depends on your position; if you are a “pro-lifer” then you do NOT agree with this statement. But let’s be striaght — a fetus IS a parasite. We all begin as parasites. As such, the “host” does have the option to choose to continue to carry the parasite until it naturally completetes its parasite cycle, or to have it removed.

    this is the real point

the court rightly suggested that once the fetus can survive if removed from the womb then it becomes too late and a contract has been made with fetus and host, the host is obligated haveing waited far to long

Ummmm… no. No “contract” is entered into at any point. This isn’t a business deal, and business analogies DO NOT apply to every situation there is. There is no contractual obligation between a human and a fetus. None. The fetus FORCES itself upon the human, and, like any other parasite, the fetus TAKES from the host whatever it needs without any “contractual obligations”, neither with any negotiations, nor even seeking permission. It just takes.

And UNTIL that fetus is outside the womb and existing completely on its own, it is still JUST A FETUS, not a human, and it is still a parasite ENTIRELY DEPENDANT upon the host body to survive. Whether it MIGHT be a ble to survive on its own is not relevant — it IS NOT DOING SO UNTIL IT IS BORN. As mentioned above, one can argue “mights” all day — that child MIGHT grow up to be a serial killer, mass murderer, rapist, etc. Might even grow up to kill its own mother. Might. The natural cycle determines when it will attempt to enter the world and exist independantly, but until that happens, evaluations of an ability to exist on its own are entirely speculative hypothesis, and in now way resemble FACTS.

  200. wags says:

Whoa, did backup just articulate, virtually word for word, the Democratic position on abortion?

  201. upright left says:

    ______
    CageyCretin Says:

The fetus FORCES itself upon the human,
    ______

Yeah, that darn fetus willed its parents to have unprotected sex just so it could selfishly start growing.
Have you allowed any of your parasites to live? ;)

  202. chucko33 says:

All these comments and not one person at TP or in this comment section have called attention to Michael Steele’s big lie in the GQ interview that pro-lifers were not allowed to speak at the DNC in 1992 (though Steele didn’t specify that convention in particular, that is the only such convention he could’ve been talking about in response to a question about how tolerant republicans are to pro-choicers versus democrats of pro-lifers).

The fact is and remains that Bob Casey Sr was not allowed to speak at the 1992 DNC because he refused to endorse Bill Clinton and thought he shouldn’t be the party’s nominee for president, NOT because of his pro-life views. In fact, at least EIGHT, that’s right, EIGHT pro-lifers gave speeches at the 1992 DNC.

TP should update its article with these facts.

    MMFA/CF has more.
