Laura Ingraham mocks Meghan McCain as being ‘plus-sized.’

ingraham.jpgLast night, Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) daughter, Meghan McCain, appeared on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show, where she continued to criticize Ann Coulter. On her radio show today, Laura Ingraham responded to McCain’s critique of far right conservatives, saying that she is “just another Valley Girl gone awry.” In a mocking faux-Valley Girl voice, Ingraham made fun of McCain’s body, joking that she didn’t get a “role in the Real World” because “they don’t like plus-sized models”:

MCCAIN (on MSNBC): And I think there’s an extreme on both parties and I hate extreme. I don’t understand. I have friends that are the most radically conservative and radically liberal people possibly ever and we all get along. We can find a middle ground.

INGRAHAM (mocking): Ok, I was really hoping that I was going to get that role in the Real World, but then I realized that, well, they don’t like plus-sized models. They only like the women who look a certain way. And on this 50th anniversary of Barbie, I really have something to say.

Listen here:

In the past, McCain has said that she is “proud” of her body. Last summer, she told Glamour, “I got to a point where I was like, I just don’t care. You think I’m fat? Fine. I don’t care how much you weigh.”

Transcript:

INGRAHAM (mocking): Ok, Meghan. Do you think that anyone would be talking to you if you weren’t kind of cute and you weren’t the daughter of John McCain? Or do you just think that they would just think that you were just another Valley Girl gone awry?

MADDOW: You picked a fight with somebody who’s definitely going to fight back.

MCCAIN: Yeah. Well, if it was, you know, if it was too hot in the kitchen, I’d get out. I know what I’m doing and I know that I’m creating, she probably will respond, she already has, but I’m sure she’ll respond harder, but this dialogue should take place. It should. I think that you know, often times and I think it’s relevant because I am a Republican. I still consider myself a Republican and that’s why it’s relevant because I’m someone within the party.

INGRAHAM (mocking): How long before she totally totally abandons the Daily Beast and makes it official at the Huffington Post?

MCCAIN: And I think there’s an extreme on both parties and I hate extreme.

Update Ingraham attacked McCain in an appearance on Fox and Friends earlier this week as well, saying "Our economic lives are in a shamble, Megan: We don’t really care about your dating life.”

Sounds like someone’s not too keen on having another blonde rightwing gal horning in on the spotlight.

…really getting filled up on the popcorn these days though…

  2. ralph the wonder llama says:

It’s really heartening to see that the inherent viciousness of the right wing is getting some exposure.

And that they’re turning it on their own now.

They really are mean-spirited, as a general rule.

  3. StratRat says:

I listened to McCain on Maddow last night and I think McCain is a bright girl. A republican for sure, but still maybe someone who can keep the GOP from becoming the party of Ingraham and Limbaugh. But I will say to Ingraham: Some girls just shouldn’t wear tight pants, and Ingraham should not throw stones.

    – - What does it say about Keith Olbermann that he used to date this jerkette? Ingraham, that is.

  5. Purple State says:

Methinks someone doth protest that she isn’t the #1 female conservative pundit out there.

You know, the last person I would want to be attacking right now is McCain’s daughter, Laura, hon. Stick to your guns and fire at liberals. You don’t want to get Johnny Mac angry.

He might Twitter you to death.

  8. Teowens says:

All Ingraham does is prove Megan Mccain’s point on Rachel Maddow’s show. This is the reason why the GOP is struggling, they’re TOO EXTREME! If you don’t agree with them 100% and 100% of the time then you aren’t a “true” conservative. You end up getting mocked and insulted like this. If the GOP continues to engage in this behavior the Democrats will be in power for years to come. The GOP is its own worst enemy.

I have to agree with LaLa on that one. As a matter of fact, my life is in such shambles that I don’t really care about LaLa’s obvious personality disorder or her single-digit IQ, either.

Well, Laura is another compassionate conservative. One of those family values types. What else could we expect from her?

  13. gummitch says:

I liked much of what I saw of McCain during the campaign, other than her understandable support of her dad and some of her professed conservatism (also completely understandable). I also thought she was pretty hot, although unsuitably young for some of us. Ahem.

But the neocons are circling the wagons tighter and tigher and tighter. Pretty soon they’ll be able to throw their “big tent” over a birdbath.

    Birdbath? Hey, Daryll!

  14. jeblucas says:

Meghan McCain is an actual human being, and not a media-savvy Frankenstein’s monster of crafted-for-ratings rants. Coulter and Ingraham are businesswomen involved in a very ugly business. They need to sell books–they need to sell ads, and they do so by saying and writing outrageous things. Meghan McCain is a conservative with actual thoughtd and feelings, hence the disconnect between her and the other personalities.

Good on you, McCain. Now keep your Dad from being such a crank.

Sad.

spencers mom, did you not watch the GOP convention?

Oh, my mistake. You meant overweight women are not welcome in the GOP. That makes more sense.

  34. WAYNEBRO says:

First, Megan McCain is NOT overweight. She looked fantastic. I don’t know where Ingram is going with that one.

Second, they’re upset because Megan was reasonable, polite, courteous and uniquely honest.

Something the far right obviously has issues with.

I’ll take the decent, honest style of republican like Megan McCain, over the rest of them any day.

  35. cmac says:

I think it’s time Ingraham looked for another job. How do we go about helping her off the air and into something more suitable for her personality and intelligence? (A career in food-services comes to mind, though it’ll have to be in the kitchen because she clearly doesn’t have the people-skills to work with customers.)

So. Complain to her handlers? Email the advertisers? What? She’s a breath of foul air. Surely we have the right to clear her out.

This story is important on many levels, the least of which is the implosion of the right wing.

Or more accurately now, the explosion, as the far right wing nuts like Ingraham collide with the more reasonable and decent people on the right, like Meghan McCain.

  38. TheDailyBanter.com says:

Meghan McCain is a vapid, uninformed valley girl. But unlike that skinny, deranged coke-hound Ingraham, at least Ms. McCain is honest about what she thinks and doesn’t always just toe the party line.

And to be honest I wouldn’t touch “Skeletor” Ingraham with Mann Coulter’s junk. On the other hand, Meghan McCain is clearly very pretty and comfortable in her own skin.

    I wouldn’t kick her out of bed…

  40. J. Fred Smug says:

Check out Laura Ingraham’s free podcast excerpts (available via iTunes) sometime. She is really a piece of work. She’ll seem perfectly reasonable for a few days, then her hormonal/mental imbalance will kick in and she’ll go waaaay off the rails into Crazytown. The best rant I heard from her was one involving liberals allegedly being in conspiracy to make everyone buy and drive “clown cars” — she seems to think all hydbrid cars in the future are going to resemble Smart Cars or Mini Coopers. Naturally, she believes this is an “anti-family” conspiracy in that all large vehicles able to accommodate large families will be “abolished.” Ingraham, Coulter, Limbaugh, et al. could keep a team of psychiatrists busy 24/7.

  41. Trittydi says:

Wow. Talk about an ugly psyche — this woman rules. I wonder who abused her as a child?

Of all the remarkably vile and poisonous personalities the re-Thugs have working for them – Ingraham is right at the top of the pile. She’s SO vile and poisonous that I think she could be considered a successor to Rush the day his bad habits catch up with him. Not many could fill his shoes successfully, but I bet this b**** could.

Conservatives need to decide if they want to put all their hopes in the Republican Party, or just go off and join the Conservative Party. Liberals dissatisfied with the Democratic Party not being liberal enough may have to do the same thing and join the Liberal Party. Personally, I think it would be a good thing to have four parties represented in Congress, as long as one party doesn’t completely control the House or the Senate. Then, they would have to work together to get legislation passed.

  46. Hoodathunk says:

Wayne, could I make a little request that the fourth party be the Progressive Party rather than the Liberal?

    TheDailyBanter.com Says:

Meghan McCain is a vapid, uninformed valley girl.

I disagree to a point there. She’s uninformed on economics, to be sure. But shes YOUNG. Lots of young people are uninformed on lots of issues. Its part of being young. Sure there are the smarter ones out there, but most kids her age are lucky they can carry on a coherent conversation much less live on television, so I’d have to say she handled herself pretty well last night.

Considering who her father is, she strikes me as being pretty bold, and has a fairly independent mind. That she didn’t know about economics did not surprise me. What did surprise me was her forthcoming manner of acknowledging that fact. I found her honesty downright refreshing, and I am hoping that this sort of appeal starts to take hold of the republican party, because if it does, it will marginalize the far right and exclude them from mainstream discussions again.

Give Meghan a break. She went on one of the most liberal shows out there, and she did it without bringing with her the arrogance, nastiness or dishonesty we usually are greeted with from the right.

    She did fine.

  50. McWars says:

Our economic lives are in a shamble, Megan: We don’t really care about your dating life.”

What’s the matter, Laura? Is your portfolio not looking so good? My guess is that you didn’t care to make this point until (a) you were affected and (b) a democrat took office.

I think it’s an insult to working men and women Ingraham to use “Our” as if she’s part of the everyday suffering, when she still has a million-dollar paycheck for blabbing mean-spirited garbage in a microphone. That doesn’t make our country run, yet she’s shielded from the real economic pain. Go figure.

  51. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

Wayne, could I make a little request that the fourth party be the Progressive Party rather than the Liberal?

Sure. But could someone explain the difference to me? I haven’t quite figured out how liberals and progressives are different. :)

  52. krazeeinjun says:

It’s good the far-right gasbags like Ingraham and Limbaugh are showing their true colors — colors that have a yellow mean streak a mile wide running thru them. The more these thuggish people open their mouths, the more independents and moderates leave them in droves — and that’s not a bad thing.

    Just saying . . .

  53. cdsister says:

Missy Ingraham is just jealous of Rush’s celebrity. She is trying to get some press….and it is working. I say we just ignore her and she will be the silly woman she has always been.

Ingraham is a nasty, hate-filled, vile skeleton, and Meghan McCain is a brave, lovely young woman who has the guts to engage in conversation with Ms. Maddow, a leading light of the Liberal Left. Meghan has class and brains and is comfortable in her own skin. Ingraham can only wish she had those qualities.

  60. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Thanks, Hoodathunk. That’s a start. But does that mean the Blue Dog Democrats (the conservative, pro-business ones) would be the “progressives”? Because I’d rather be liberal if that’s the case. Commerce is simply not regulated enough in this country, and corporations have way too much control over our lives. (It isn’t the government saying your credit rating isn’t good enough for a loan, it’s private corporations doing that.)

  79. mhulot says:

Even if I’m pretty far to the left on most every issue, I’m very happy to hear what Meghan McCain has been saying. When politicians and political voices on both sides of the aisle are reasonable, thoughtful and genuinely willing to work with people they disagree with, then everybody wins. One party rule is destructive, regardless of the party, but we need people like Megan McCain on the right both to keep the Democrats honest (we may be glad they’re in power, but does *anyone* like Harry Reid right now?) and to contribute ideas without resorting to ideological rigidity. If the Republicans had come up with constructive proposals for the stimulus bill instead of engaging in knee-jerk demagoguery, I have no doubt that the bill would have been stronger for it.

Also, it’s a good indication of the state of gender relations in the GOP that nobody within the party would dream of criticizing their current figurehead, Rush Limbaugh, for being clearly and grossly obese, but because Meghan McCain doesn’t look like Barbie (or for that matter Sarah Palin or Ann Coulter, both of whom have curiously been labeled “pertty” by their party), she’s mocked for being “plus-sized”. That’s ridiculous. I hate to take Ingraham’s bait, but I have to say that I think Meghan McCain is very attractive. Not just that I merely don’t agree with Ingraham’s mocking assessment, but I’m saying that I really do think she’s extremely cute. And she seems to be pretty bright, too. And did I hear something about her being an arts major? I think I may have developed my first crush on a Republican.

This comment makes perfect sense if you look at it from a right-wing perspective.

It’s like Colbert said about President Bush: “He believes the same thing on Wednesday that he believed on monday, regardless of what happened on Tuesday.”

Same principle at work here. Ol’ Arch figures that if we criticize someone for something they’ve said or done, then we have to criticize them for everything else they ever say or do the rest of their lives. Doesn’t matter if they say something sensible or wise; if we criticized them once, then we can’t ever praise them for anything, ever. Otherwise, to a wingnut, that’s “hypocrisy”.

Yeah, I know. It makes no sense to thinking people. But it seems to make perfect sense to them.

I disagree to a point there. She’s uninformed on economics, to be sure. But shes YOUNG…
Give Meghan a break. She went on one of the most liberal shows out there, and she did it without bringing with her the arrogance, nastiness or dishonesty we usually are greeted with from the right.

    She did fine.

Well, I’m 26 and have a degree in economics. I have made a life study of our nations system of government and laws. No body cares what I have to say, even though my opinion is informed and nuanced. So being young is no excuse for anything. If your going to go on TV to discuss politics, you should have at least a passing familiarity with the issues at hand.

She only did well because Maddow, not being a bully, was easy on her. I give her a great deal of credit for speaking honestly, having an independent mind, and sharing her life with the public. But that is no excuse for ignorance. Especially given her privileged background, she has no excuse not to understand such things. She has chosen not to inform herself.

On the other hand, her body is not a choice. It is what it is (and I personally think its quite nice). Her weight has nothing to do with her opinion. Ingraham calling her plus-sized is a total non sequiter in response to a political opinion.

Ann Coulter does it again. Sarcasm and throwing around comments about someones physical appearance. The last refuge of someone who has nothing of importance to say, so she hits upon something with no relevance.

And she is the last one to talk. She looks like a burnt, animated stick. Author Beth Saulnier had a quote that fits Coulter. “she is the bastard child of Lizzie Borden and Lady Macbeth.”

As for Meghan McCain, if she can remain for long a Republican, then she is surely her fathers daughter. Right now she is newly minted and has not had time to get her ideals, if she has any, dirty. At 24 she has not been hurt enough, disgusted enough or tarnished enough to be jaded.

Wait awhile. It’s like watching one of those horror movies where the heroine is going down to the cellar. And the audience is yelling, hey dummy don’t open that door.

It suddenly occurred to me: Laura is the anti-Oprah.
White, skinny, nasty, disloyal, snarky, aloof, and ultimately stupid.

It’s the face of the modern Republican party. When John McCain ditched his first wife to marry Cindy, Ronald and Nancy Reagan froze McCain out, found a home for Carol in Southern California and a job with the Edwin Meeses. The Reagans felt that personal decency was part and parcel of their belief system.
Not so the attack dogs of the Gingrich Era and beyond.

there’s a lot of people out there who don’t knoe from fascist, imperialist, or Neo-Hooverite.
    But they know nasty.

Keep up the goooood work, Laura.

Does this represent the best that this political outfit has to offer to America and the world, a senseless assault on a person’s physique? How shameful!
That said, what is most intriguing, is that this is the political entity that claims to be founded upon and guided by Christian principles – possessed of truth and moral fortitude, virtue and goodness. Hmmmm!!!! You know, it was the ‘religious right’ of His day – the people who thought they alone were right and everyone else was wrong – that Jesus looked straight in the eye and denounced their hypocrisy.

    Well that’s not quite correct.

If you listened to her you’ll note she said she’s “tried” to understand economics but just doesn’t “get it”.

Lots of people share that view on economics. And they’re not necessarily idiots. Some people get it, some people get other things. So it was a fair and honest answer to Rachel, and not one that she should necessarily be penalized for.

Additionally, she wasn’t on the show to talk about economics. She was plugging her blog, and other things including discussing her bout with Ann Coulter. That was one of many questions asked her by Rachel and it just happened to be towards the end of the interview and that’s where they ended it.

As I pointed out in my comment there are young people like yourself perhaps who are more knowledgeable in various areas and such, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t get to be on TV or talk. In fact, if more people were just as honest as her and admit they don’t know a given topic well then people would be better informed to gauge the merit of that persons opinion.

I’ll take honesty over most traits any day, including intelligence or training. Honesty is what we are lacking in this country, and something that we all decry people for in here for not possessing. So when we see it like we saw it with Meghan McCain, we shouldn’t disparage it.

We should encourage it. Especially on the right.

  110. Lora says:

I am a bit late in coming to this thread, but the distinction really should be made between pudgy Republican women, who are ridiculed, and fat Republican men, who get top slots. Yes, and then she went on Fox and Friends the next day and said ““I think it’s so disappointing and it’s scary,” McCain said, referencing the earmarks in the bill. “Hope and change – what’s going on?” She added, “This second stimulus package that Nancy Pelosi’s talking about I think doesn’t make sense.

I do give her credit for being open and honest and willing to talk. That we should be encouraging those traits doesn’t mean that we should refrain from criticizing other issues. But if she doesn’t understand economics, she shouldn’t go making such bold statements that feed in to the politics of fear.

Also it isn’t necessary to understand derivatives and mark-to-market to understand the fundamental problems we are facing.

If she can call it scary and unnecessary, she should be able to tell us why.

My problem with her is that a) she has been given a platform because of birth, not merit; and b) she has failed to really inform herself about the issues that face our country, not just economics. She supports policies because her father does, not because she has come to her own conclusions.

In private life one can hold any opinion without having to justify it. Those with a public platform need to be able to explain why they believe something, not just assert that its true.

  125. getplaning says:

I have always thought Laura Ingraham was far more vicious than Ann Coulter. There is a mean streak in her that comes from deep inside. Throughout her career, she has spent a lot of energy doing her best to bring harm to other people.

At Dartmouth, she secretly taped meetings of the campus Gay Students Association, and sent copies of the tapes to participants’ parents.

She was a leading member of the anti-feminist Independent Women’s Forum. Ingraham assisted in the “Women for Judge Thomas” campaign that supported Thomas’ appointment to the Supreme Court and promoted attacks on Anita Hill. She later went to work for Judge Thomas as a clerk.

In late 2004, when 380 tons of explosives were discovered missing from a munitions site in Iraq, Ingraham was among several conservative pundits to blame the troops and not the Pentagon.

In response to the suggestion of Today show host Katie Couric that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld apologize or resign in the wake of the Abu Ghraib scandal, Ingraham said: “How about Matt and Katie apologize for that lame show they put on every day?”

Ingraham makes mean-girl remarks about Meghan McCain, but I suppose she thinks Rush Limbaugh is trim, fit, and the epitome of conservative manhood. Trips to the Dominican Republic for Viagra-enhanced man-boy love notwithstanding.

I hope every “plus-sized” listener to your show kicks your skinny little a** to the curb. Because that’s where you belong.

Meghan McCain is a conservative with actual thoughtd and feelings, hence the disconnect between her and the other personalities.”

Meghan is no conservative – were she one, you’d have fangs out for HER!! Like you did for Sarah Palin – a real conservative (also beautiful and intelligent and VERY MUCH an “actual human being, not a Frankenstein media savvy monster”) You ignorami crack me up!!
