Meghan McCain: ‘I Just Don’t Understand’ The Economy, But I Think A Second Stimulus ‘Doesn’t Make Sense’

This morning on Fox & Friends, John McCain’s daughter Meghan McCain railed against President Obama for signing the omnibus spending bill yesterday. “I think it’s so disappointing and it’s scary,” McCain said, referencing the earmarks in the bill. “Hope and change – what’s going on?” She added, “This second stimulus package that Nancy Pelosi’s talking about I think doesn’t make sense.”

Meghan McCain’s comments this morning are surprising, given that last night she was telling MSNBC host Rachel Maddow that she doesn’t know much about the economy. Here’s how McCain responded when Maddow asked her whether she agrees with her father’s call for a spending freeze:

McCAIN: Spending freeze? You know, econ – economic things, I said this last night on Hannity, I said is my — I didn’t even take econ in college. I don’t completely understand it so I’d hate to make a comment one way or the other. That’s – truly of all the things – I keep reading and I just don’t understand it.

Watch a compilation of the clips:

McCain should have stuck with her concession that she doesn’t know much about the economy. Instead, by coming out against a second stimulus, Meghan is contradicting the advice of Nobel Prize winning economists Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman. “We need a larger and better designed stimulus,” Stiglitz said yesterday. Krugman adds, “It’s rapidly becoming clear that yes, the [first stimulus] was too small.”

The McCain family appears to enjoy commenting on economic matters without knowledge. Despite conceding early on that economics was “not something I’ve understood as well I should,” John McCain ran a presidential campaign trying to convince voters that the fundamentals of the economy were strong.

Ah, the trust fund baby and voice of the moderate branch of the Republican Party has spoken. Typing moderate drivel on her pet blog from her million dollar apartment paid for by Mommy. I saw her on Maddow last night. Rachel treated her with kid gloves (not too many Repubs offering to go on “Progressive” shows these days). She came across as pretty vapid even for a repub. Kinda like the Paris Hilton of the young Republican jetset. She did throw down the gauntlet with Man Colture, though. Should get interesting.

It’s like you’re about to get attacked by a rampaging lion and you have a shotgun. You ask Congress to give you the ammunition you need to stop the lion from mauling you, and they hand you a shell full of birdshot. Knowing full well that its not going to stop the lion, and will probably annoy it, you shoot anyway, hoping to at least slow the lion down.

The lion is still charging, let’s hope for the right ammunition this time…..

    She “loves the Republican Party”.
She’s 24 years old and registered as a Republican last father’s day.
She smacked down Ann Coulter, who her beloved Republican Party has been propping up.
She doesn’t know anything about economics.
She doesn’t think the stimulus plan is good economic policy.

Are we supposed to be impressed?

Meghan McCain, “Well gosh the economy must still be strong. I keep spending lots of money and sending mommy the bills and she pays them just like she always did.”

  22. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Well, it looks like the Republican’t party has decided to pimp Meghan McCain as their ambassador to attract young people to their party. Too bad she’s such an airhead. I was very disappointed in Rachel Maddow’s interview with her. Rachel didn’t ask any hard-hitting questions. It was mostly a fluff job. Shame on Rachel.

  23. misshusseinmolly says:

Did I miss something? Does Meghan McCain have some cred I’m unaware of? Why are people other than her blog following paying attention to her?

Yes, she has a blog. It’s even written better than a number of them I’ve seen. And she has a famous daddy. And while she appears to have more functioning brain cells than Joe the Plumber, she hardly qualifies as an expert in any field. Because of this lack, the only people who will pay attention to her are people grasping at straws — looking for ANY quote from anyone supporting their view.

I would like to express some admiration for Meghan, though. Apparently she has the guts to appear on Rachel Maddow while many of her Republican brethren don’t.

I think this is basically what is going on. The Republican party is so disconnected with her generation and with moderates at this point that they need someone like Meghan’s help, and she seems happy and capable to do it. I have respect for her just for what she said about Coulter, but isn’t it pure speculation that Congress is drafting a second stimulus? Wasn’t that debunked? BTW, I think a second stimulus is a horrible idea.

Not that it made a difference since Rachel treated her like the interview was a fluff job. I’m very disappointed in Rachel for that. I wonder if it was her idea or if her bosses told her that she had to treat Meghan with kid gloves?

  31. tom says:

Say what you will about Mehgan. Yes, she is an airhead; however, her appearance on Fox & Friends doubled the on-camera IQ.

  32. Trollspotter says:

Meghan comes off as a little ditzy and publicity hungry, it’s true, but she’s young, still trying to figure out the world, much less the economy. She’s a work in progress. But no matter what her flaws may be, to me it’s a positive development for a moderate Republican–any moderate Republican–to speak out against hard right crazies like Coulter. Maybe she’ll inspire others to do the same.

  56. J. Fred Smug says:

Meghan McCain obviously spent a lot of time with Sarah Palin during the campaign, because she seems to have picked up her talking points and is simply repeating them nearly verbatim.

  57. SkepticRising says:

I saw her spot with Rachel last night and she also said there that she hadn’t taken econ in college (what did take?) but on Rachel’s show she had the good sense not to offer an opinion about it. She did have a lot of stuff about “having conversations” and being moderate and how the extreme rhetoric of the right wing of the party was alienating young people. But I couldn’t help noticing a complete and utter lack of any policy ideas, any solutions, any you know, like, plans. So on the far right (which, unlike Billo’s “extreme radical left” actually is a far right) we have corrosive, hate filled rhetoric and obstructionism, and in Meghan McCain’s moderate wing of the party we have can’t-we-all-just-get-along. Wonderful.

  58. GrrrlRomeo says:

The Republicans need more moderates like Meghan McCain who are publicly moderate and willing to talk to liberals. Because then we can have an honest debate about things. Right now the only people really talking are hard-right wing. There is no debate because they have their fingers stuck in the ears while shouting their principles and blocking bills in congress. We can’t progress this way.

  59. 5th Estate says:

I watched her on Maddow last night.

I give her points for stating the obvious–that the GOP is extreme and is losing her generation—because she is going against the Republican establishment grain and that kind of talk puts a target on one’s back.

But on FOX she’s sounds like a typical entitled Republican—subject matter ignorance doesn’t prevent her from making vapid declarative statements.

She’s more articulate than Sarah Palin, which is something I suppose, but she seems no smarter than average and she seems to think that whatever she knows is already enough–a familiar trait of Republicans.

I think perhaps her real motivation has been expressed in the course of her blog posts already—her social life is crap because Republicans are un-cool but if she sat at the cool librul kidz table she’d risk her prospects for a comfortable right-wing welfare career path.

I don’t mean to pick on her (she’s still young and consider her influences) but IMHO her deepest thoughts and concerns seem to revolve around her whilst it seems her opinions on anything else are expressed with fully-formed vacuous rhetoric.

  60. hanshiro says:

Now that’s just not true! If you’d look at her blog, she’s totally committed to a plan:

    Love,

    Meghan

P.S. I am still trying to figure out what tattoo I should get to commemorate my time on the trail. I feel like I am finally ready to commit to some new ink. I mean, a tat is, like, a TOTAL commitment!

Was it not Michelle Obama who made light of the Bush rebate last spring saying that $700 is nice, but not going to do anything for the economy. Yet, $13 a week or whatever the next spending bill is (and BTW, REAL tax breaks are not “spending,” and is the only proven way for the govt to get the economy back on track). Do I get to go on network television and spout off about a subject I know nothing about? As for your comment that tax cuts are the only way to get the government back on track (by the way it’s not GOVERNMENT that is off track, it’s the economy stupid, if government WAS the economy that would be REAL Socialism)… try reading history. Waynebro, name one reason why Obama has a clue about the economy or what he is talking about. There is nothing in his background that would help him in this matter. It is easy to make fun of Meghan, but she is not the president and despite her education level on the economy, she has a right to express her views. I actually manage a P&L, a large P&L, and know the responsibility that comes with that. I am not a Republican, and neither was Bush. Much like the new amazing first lady said, a $700 tax refund is not going to turn around the economy. But somehow a $13 a week tax refund and spending over a million to research the effects of animal methane emission on a midwest state apparently will. Really?

What bothers me about the dialogue on here, is that although I have seen a few people open to a dialogue, many others simply insult her appearance and honesty (wish most of the SEC had that) and try to take her credibilty away with juvenille insults, they just want to paint her as an overweight barbie. What I realize is that stems from jealousy and fear. She is intelligent and the left fears a strong emergence from the Center right as that is where the country actually is (the center not just center right, center left just as much), and if that message gets across the 2010 midterm election will be a blood bath for the lefts, based on the insane spending and earmarks (and BTW Republicans are writing them too). I personally want all politicians out of office as I believe all of them, on either side, are indebtted to special interests and we will never have real change until we get new people to run our country, that do not owe anyting to any lobbyist or special interst group. I thought my President Obama’s inaguration was a wonderful day, to say where we were and where we are now and it expanded the American dream 100 fold, but I do not think we will get change that works for the American people. I welcome all thoughts on this…
