Santorum: ‘I Really Believe The Fundamentals Of American Economy Is Still Strong’

santorummccain.jpgOn his radio show last night, conservative talker Hugh Hewitt asked former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) to give his “sense of where the economy is headed right now.” Santorum replied that he had “an innate sense that America is never going to revisit the Depression era again.” “I really don’t believe we’re going to go there again,” said Santorum.

After criticizing President Obama’s “doom and gloom” predictions, Santorum declared, “I really do believe that the fundamentals of American economy is still strong”:

SANTORUM: I think we’re probably, you know, reaching the bottom here in the next few months. There’s probably some more bad things that are going to happen, particularly in the credit markets. But, look, I don’t think — I think all this prediction of Obama’s doom and gloom and some others out there I think is overblown. I really do believe that the fundamentals of American economy is still strong and that we are, you know, we’ll pull ourselves out of this probably by the end of the year.

Listen here:

Unfortunately, Santorum’s McCain-esque declaration of the economy’s fundamental strength is overly optimistic.

Earlier this week, a survey of 51 economic forecasters found that “the recession-hit U.S. economy is proving weaker than economists expected just a month ago.” The survey was conducted before last Friday’s jobs report that “showed the unemployment rate surged to a 25-year high of 8.1 percent last month as employers cut 651,000 jobs.”

Last week, Harvard economist Robert Barro wrote in the Wall Street Journal that “there is ample reason to worry about slipping into a depression,” putting the odds at “roughly one-in-five.” Economist Nouriel Roubini, who warned about the housing bubble in 2005, told Time that “unless we take the right policy actions, we’ll end up in a near depression.”

Unlike Santorum, these economists don’t have an “innate” feeling. They have knowledge and understanding of the weak state of the economy.

Transcript:

HEWITT: Give me your sense of where the economy is headed right now. Today, the CEO of JPMorganChase and Company said that, you know, there are some modest signs of recovery out there. Yesterday Citibank had a report saying that it had a couple of decent months. What do you think Rick Santorum?

SANTORUM: Well, you know, I’m always of the opinion when everybody is saying things are really bad and everybody starts to sell out of the market, which is what’s happened here over the last, you know, three months since the election. You know, I have an innate sense that America is never going to revisit the Depression era again. And if that’s the case, and I really don’t believe we’re going to go there again, then I think we’re probably, you know, reaching the bottom here in the next few months.

HEWITT: I’m with you on that. In fact, I think it’s going to be faster than that.

“I really do believe that the fundamentals of American economy is still strong”

Just a guess but I bet he flunked economics right along with English.

  2. Winski says:

Sounds just like chimpy assessing Putin..See how well that panned out..Santorum is a joke..A BAD JOKE but a joke none the less….

  3. livelongandprosper says:

you know, we’ll pull ourselves out of this probably by the end of the year.

Gee, do you think any of the new policies would be responsible if that happens? Not in Santorum’s world, that is a given.

“Pssst, John, John, your neck bolts are showing…”

Santorum: ‘I Really Believe The Fundamentals Of American Economy Is Still Strong’

But the real question is: Is our childrens learning?

Good god, that makes my hair stand on end…

  6. gus smith says:

Who listens to Santorum..but the lack of agreement of subject and verb really gets my attention. English skills matter.

  7. Hoodathunk says:

And why is he goosing McCain? Is this appropriate behavior or did he just miss the ventriloquist dummy handle access? Again.

  8. raynman says:

    Fundamentals is?

Straight from the Bush School of Grammers

  10. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Wow. Just wow.

I mean, it was embarrassing enough when McCain did it. But now?

This is like the producers of Gigli, basking in the afterglow of their multiple Razzie wins and deciding that they had a good shot at some major box office.

  11. NoMoreBush says:

Do strong fundamentals include the near collapse of the commercial paper market and nearly the entire commercial and investment banking industry, not to mention the collapse of money market funds? Because that is where we were heading on September 15, 2008. Perhaps this, among many many other things, explains why Man-on-Dog is always introduced with the adjective of FORMER. (Thank God)

  12. Cal Malenky says:

“Innate” means “born with”. Was Sanitorium born with the feeling that the economy will always be strong?
The frothy mixture is trying to stay relevant. Who cares?

  13. Buckie Boy says:

Sen. Rick Santorum has a job, health insurance, guaranteed retirement…

….so of course the economy is just fine for him….

….not so much for those pesky little unemployed people.

  14. dbadass says:

What does Santorum do now? I really don’t know but I am sure one of you folks probably does. The reason I ask is why does anyone care what he thinks? I mean it isn’t like anyone dropped by Gary Condit’s failed ice cream shoppe to say sorry and ask his opinion on things. Is it possible that Santorum is the captain of the GOP?

  15. Hussein Leporello says:

Once again Stupidity proves greater than the Speed of Light. Why? Because, unlinke the speed of light, Stupidity Has No Limit!

  18. tombaker says:

You’ve gotta watch’em when they start throwing those blithe and superficial sentimentalist lines around.

They’re trying to re-engineer “realism” into “anti-americanism” (again).

That kind of jingo-lingo is what the Gipper rode to Washington on.

“Maybe if we’da just talked nicer about Ol’Yeller a little more, he’da licked that danged’ol rabies.”

  19. angels81 says:

watchdog, The only dumb ass in that room that day was the guy who had the shoes thrown at him.

  20. ralph the wonder llama says:

So basically, these guys are confident that Obama will get us out of the Bush Recession before it become the Bush Depression. Awesome.

Of course, I’d feel better about their predictions if they were the type of guys who got things right a lot.

  21. ralph the wonder llama says:

Does the watchpup have any sense of what a “topic” is, and how to stay on it?

    Doesn’t seem so.

  22. tombaker says:

    oh, it’s dogwash again. neat.

    - weird that you’d be stoked about that dogwash, since it will no doubt inspire someone to blow up more of our troops.

nice “support” you’re throwin’ down – really.

    -ass.

  23. lokidog says:

“…we’ll pull ourselves out of this probably by the end of the year.”

Weird. Santorum’s head speaks to his *ss.

    Only in Wingnutville.

  24. dbadass says:

He’ll have 3 years to contemplate what a dumb ass he is.

    Rick Santorum?

  25. Hoodathunk says:

“an inmate sense that America is never going to revisit the Depression era again.”

    Makes more sense now.

Muntather Zaidi will be out in 3 years, and will be regarded as a hero, but you’ll be a dumb ass the rest of your life.

  27. RUCerious says:

    Shorter Sanctimoronum.
I really do believe that the fundamentalist movement of American religious extremism is still strong and that we are, you know, we fundiefascists will pull our heads out of our collective asses, probably by the end of the year.

  28. dbadass says:

Hi ralph. I am headed out to work soon but seeing how we think alike I trust a steady course and an able body at the helm. Incidentally I think the dominance/social heirarchy work has been enlightening but it has also led to a new line of inquiry which I am interested in discussing with you. The problem is that we really can’t discuss this one openly as there are financial implications and I can’t afford to have the premise seized on by others. Maybe we can find a back channel

  29. jb says:

Does Ricky ever do anything besides phuck a dog?

  30. Bozo The Neoclown says:

it’s statements such as these which clarify why sanscrotum is a FORMER repuke senator…since he has no damn sense of reality.

  31. dbadass says:

Oh and I want Zooey in on this one too. I think it has real potential.

  32. dixie blood says:

Why do idiots like Dick Sanitorium promote their stupidity in public?

Is he proud or too stupid to know he’s soooooo stupid?

  33. livelongandprosper says:

    Cal Malenky Says:

“Innate” means “born with”. Was Sanitorium born with the feeling that the economy will always be strong?

Thanks Cal. I read it and thought it was an odd word to use. I was too lazy to look it up though!

I suppose he means that if you were born with a silver spoon….

  34. Keith H. says:

So he believes the fundamentals are still strong.
I guess when you’re a former Senator it must somehow be a little easier to have a steady stream of b.s. flowing from your pie hole. Especially when you’re trying to speak from a position of authority on a subject you know nothing about.

  35. Bozo The Neoclown says:

When will these washed up repukies realize:
a)no one gives a rat’s ass what they think
    and
    b) just because you “think” something doesn’t make it true

  36. StratRat says:

Republicans are allowed to just make stuff up. The MSM encourages this behavior. I wonder when the lights go out and the GOP is all alone with itself, does it feel guilt about the spreading of lies to advance their own political careers? Do they feel shame?

  37. angels81 says:

This keeps getting funnier and funnier. First we have limpballs running his mouth, then Steele keeps coming up with more absurd shit, now little Ricky has to jump in just to show that he is as dumb as the rest of them. I’m going to have to go back out and get more popcorn.

No silly, when things get better it’ll be because all of that trickle-down from the top per-centers’ tax cuts finally trickled! In fact, is that a crumb I spy?! Gotta run!

  39. Danny Noonan says:

This is where Santorum retreats and talks about how wonderful the spirit of the American worker is.

  40. MapleStreet says:

And the tobacco execs believed that smoking was good for you.

Amd doesn’t Santorum have some quotes of how he believes that cavemen went to dances with dinosaurs ?

  41. jb says:

Santorum, like some of the trolls here, could benefit from a prolonged period of silent prayer and contemplation…very prolonged.

  42. jb says:

McCain seems to be using his finger to test for an Idiot Wind.

  43. angels81 says:

At least McCain has an excuse…He’s senile.

  44. nanlichi says:

Three years is a long time. I’m sure that if Zaidi were given a chance to go back in time and change one thing he did, just one little thing, he would have aimed a little lower and caught that POS right in the nose with both shoes.

And he would have been an even greater hero than he is now.

    ZAIDI RULES!!!

  45. WaltTheMan says:

At least his constituency has see to it that he has had his Senate seat removed from his fat a$$.

  46. Kid Charlemagne says:

Someone needs to tell the old man that no one is listening to him any more….probably not even his own daughter, who will most likely flip to being a Democrat when he croaks.

  47. McWars says:

Actually Mary it is not trickle-down, it’s tickle-out-of-the-country economics.

  49. Ape-Man says:

I think all these republicans have an excuse – arrested development. For whatever reason they don’t learn from certain mistakes – they don’t progress and transcend. Let us all take pity on them but for god’s sake don’t put them in charge of anything!

  50. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Why is the GOP pulling all these has-beens (Santorum, Delay, Ginrich) out of retirement to be their talking heads? It’s a pretty sad state of affairs for the GOP when their current politicians don’t have what it takes to get their message across (assuming they have a message).

  51. RUCerious says:

Some Pennsylvanian ex-Senators spread joy wherever they go.
Others spread joy whenever they go.

  52. Mike71654 says:

Big surprise..This idiot probably beleive in the tooth fairy too.

  53. angels81 says:

Bilbo: Look at the new up and coming stars of the Party of NO. Cantor, Palin, Jindal, Joe the Plumber, Steele. I rest my case.

  54. kasinca says:

According to an interview with Milton Frieman and the Financial Times, September 2003, he even said that he would not push the free market economics any longer. These wingers who are holding on to a failed philosophy know nothing about practicality. At one time it was believed it would work. It has been tried and has always failed and will not work. I see McCain and the dogman Santorum and I think of what McCain’s daughter told Rachel Maddow last night. “I know nothing about economics, I didn’t take it in college but I agree with my Dad that the stimulus is bad. Not a good reason to be against something.

  55. Mathazar says:

So far, Obama’s predictions have been supported by economists around the world. They’re pretty much saying that things will get much worse before they start to improve. The estimate of bad debt circulating through the system just keeps increasing.

As with McGrumpy, I doubt Santorum could even define what the key fundamentals are.

  56. 4httr says:

I was never prouder of the people of Pa. as when we gave the always out of touch, Rickie Santorum the boot. How he ever won an election here is still a mystery to me.He’s a very odd guy. In fact it was always difficult to call him by his first name Rick. For some reason he always seemed like a Dick to me.

  57. 666trolls says:

    Grammar is fundamentals.

  58. krazeeinjun says:

Ummm .. Senator Sanitarium! — Tony Soprano would like to have a word with you.

    Just saying . . .

  59. dbearton says:

Santorum is out of touch with reality. He has not only academic problems, he has psychiatric problems.

  60. Texas Aggie says:

This is the same phenomenon as Frick doing his long distance diagnoses via video that contradicted what people actually present at the site found. You have some jerk who doesn’t believe in fact based reality making some statement about what he wishes were true, and then wondering why it doesn’t happen. Does he believe in fairy godmothers who make everything right at the end?

Ricky doesn’t have any data at all to back up his “gut feeling” (wasn’t that what screwed up the last eight years, working from your gut instead of your brain?), but that doesn’t even slow him down. Why are so many of these knuckleheads in the GOP? Is that where they send the mentally challenged? I suspect that Barry Goldwater, Nelson Rockefeller and Dwight Eisenhower are glad they died before they saw what their party has degenerated into.

    yay!
    how many *this* friday?

people, this *IS* a depression, not a recession.

a recession is painful but you can ride it out.
we’re past that, we are in CRASH & BURN.

  65. A simple man says:

The current unemployment rate is what 7%? I swear, some of you libs need serious help. ” but but but 500 people at GM just lost their jobs! ” . Oh lord.

  66. wiley says:

The real unemployment rate buried in the Federal Government’s data tables, including discouraged workers and those who are considered marginally attached or working part-time because they cannot find full time work, is now 12.2%, the highest it has been in 15 years.

For those economists who claim that this is nothing like the Great Depression, because then the unemployment rate was 25%, stick this in your pipe and smoke it. Where was the unemployment rate in 1930, the year after the market crashed? According to the BLS, the unemployment rate for all of 1930 was 8.9%.

Oh that Santorum. Ever the Republican illusions. Boy I wish I had some of what he is smoking. Share some Rick. So we can all deny reality. What’s that saying? Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

  69. telestai2 says:

After criticizing President Obama’s “doom and gloom” predictions, Santorum declared, “I really do believe that the fundamentals of American economy is still strong”:

This totally has nothing to do with this article. But I must ask, is this site a radical left site? It singles out not liking the radical rights viewpoint. If it was in the center, where America reisdes, it would hate the radical, ragardless of party, they both harm America in different ways. Just wondering why this site talks about progress and wondering where that progress is aimed.
