Being identified with Bush’s agenda ‘freezes the blood’ of some SMU professors.

bushsmu2web.jpgEditor & Publisher’s Greg Mitchell previews a New York Times Magazine piece set to come out this weekend that “explores the uproar over the soon-to-arrive ‘Freedom Institute’ established by former President George W. Bush at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.” The article says that some SMU professors are “half-convinced” that Bush will name Karl Rove as his foundation’s executive director yet “see Condi Rice as an acceptable alternative.” The article also provides further testimony that SMU faculty are extremely uncomfortable housing Bush’s library and “Freedom Institute” at their university:

Another historian there charges: “The Bush circle has done so much damage to every institution they’ve touched, it would be naive not to worry about the damage they could do to SMU.” [...]

[The article] points out, “the prospect” of being identified “in perpetuity” with Bush’s agenda “freezes the blood of some of the university’s leading academics. Everything about the planned institute reminds them of what they detested about the Bush administration. It will proselytize rather than explore: a letter sent to universities bidding for the Bush center stipulated that the institute would, among other things, ‘further the domestic and international goals of the Bush administration.’”

(ThinkProgress has been keeping a close eye on developments with the Bush library, and we will continue to do so. Read our related posts here.)

    Q U E S T I O N:

Who wants to house the LIEbrary of an International WANTED MAN and WAR CRIMINAL?

    .

  2. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    I HAVE to ask…

Will they be selling Freedom Fries™ in the lie-berry restaurant?

And shoooooes in the gift shop?

  3. Uncle Ho says:

And shredded copies of the Constitution are on sale in the lobby.

  4. spencers mom says:

The Presidential Library that never get built. Bush can’t leave the country without fear of arrest, can’t raise any money to build a library, couldn’t read a book if he could, and very few seem to be lining up to book speaking engagements.

It’s not too late, SMU, to ask Mr. Bush to find another place to build his “legacy”. Is that sewage treatment plant still available?

    PEACE

  5. Rich H says:

How does a university house a “Freedom Institute” founded by war criminals? That includes Rice by the way. I guess SMU doesn’t mind being a second rate institution.

  6. Buckie Boy says:

Yeah, a WAR CRIMINAL Library is not a proud thing to have on your campus.

And then we have the CHENEY DEATH SQUADS…

…now you know what happened to the DC Madam…

…the guy who’s plane crashed when he was going to rat out how they cheated the election…

…they are just as much like a Mafia as we suspected.

  7. Perry logan says:

And let’s not forget: he was never President.

  8. tombaker says:

“heh-heh-heh – that’s a good story, Bandar, but did I ever tell you about the time I date-raped an entire University – heh-heh-heh – yes i did – after my days of presidentering were done, heh, I went right down to TX and gave the Board at SMU some roofies, and, heh, soon as they were down I took it to’em, heh heh heh….didn’t know what hit’em heh heh heh…”

  9. biranda says:

    chat

    thanks you tskler

  10. DaTruth says:

Malnourished best describes Bush in that picture. All I see is his big head laughing like the joker. That creep and his legacy is an insult to SMU!

  11. Briseadh na Faire says:

    Here’s a thought, SMU:

Let Bush build his library. Then, around the library, erect a monument to Gitmo in the form of a fence styled after the fence that surrounds the prison, with one slight change; no gate.

  12. hanshiro says:

Being identified with bush’s agenda stopped over 1 million Iraqis’ blood completely….

  13. rimhotep says:

Urgent call to action! Republicans are flooding this poll with “F” votes for Obama’s progress.

Go here to vote and pass this along to everyone you know!

Tragically for the entire world, he was. He was just never elected to the office.

I bet President Norris won’t like parts of his country being used to honor another Jeebus-sucking wingnut.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to burn it down

  17. spearNmagicHelmet says:

listen to your frozen blood. don’t do it.

  18. moondancer says:

Seems to me this is better suited for Bob Jones University or maybe Regents Law School. Somewhere academically bankrupt to befit the amoral bush.

  19. misshusseinmolly says:

I imagine that faculty members of SMU are starting to feel like Ryder Truck Rental management did after April 19, 1995. Tainted, but through no real fault of their own.

  20. A Patriot Acting says:

I know they’re located in Dubai now (patriotic Americans that they are) but if anyone owes the Bush Administration a hearty “thank you” and a patch of real estate for his lieberry it’d be Haliburton. His other most gracious recipient of the Bush good will probably couldn’t spare the space in his cave on the border of Pakistan.

  21. Joe the Philosopher says:

I understand that the George W. Bush Library will also stand as a Monument to Sewage.

  22. wiley says:

Perhaps they could get busy writing grants to raise the other Bush library and make a substantial contribution to writing an accurate history of Bush and his administration (and that lame-lame-lame Congress.)

  23. walstib says:

maybe we’ll all get lucky and teh libry will burn a couple of times as they try to build it…

    hint, hint, HINT

  24. Jersey says:

Maybe I’m painting with too broad a brush here but this makes me glad I’m no longer a methodist. Not sure what kind of ties the school has to the religion but on first glance it doesn’t reflect well.

  25. Joe the Philosopher says:

I’ve heard that there is one good thing about the Bush Library: It will have a whole room dedicated to the history of dim-witted rich thugs.

  26. curious says:

No one is forcing SMU to accept this idiots library. First you should wonder if he will be brought before the Hague. And the very least, you should ask your university if Bush is worthy of such a library on such a place of learning.

What has Bush done to warrant such space? And if the memos that come out weekly don’t shine the light on the madness and destruction of his presidency, then this school deserves the future harassment of the continued eye sore. What kind of school would want to pay tribute to such a man?

  27. burro says:

SMU is idiotic for accepting this. It will pigeonhole them and define their worldview as the same as Shrubwit/Cheney/Rove. Shruby was never his own man. It’s about ideology, not the accomplishments or even the thoughts of one man. He never had any.

SMU is inviting a propaganda catapulting machine onto its campus. They’re either too foolish to see the truth or they are OK with everything Shrubwit represents. I believe it’s the latter which means Liberty University and Bob Jones University better move over because there’s competition on the way.

  28. cd says:

“The Bush circle has done so much damage to every institution they’ve touched, it would be naive not to worry about the damage they could do to SMU.”

I can’t imagine that there isn’t anyone who doesn’t feel sorry for the poor old professor that spend a life time building a reputation only to have it besmirched by the smirking chimp.

  29. cd says:

    That should read professors

  30. avchavis says:

This is too hilarious! I hope and pray that SMU changes their mind about the Bush ‘Lie-berry’! I wonder what they’ll do when Bush goes to jail?

  32. JoeBuddha says:

Well, if they only included books he actually READ, maybe they could down-size to an elaborate magazine stand (or wast-paper basket, I suppose…)

  33. nickrhoward says:

They say the purpose of this library is to espouse Bush’s world views and his accomplishments. It will be nothing but lies…

  34. wiley says:

The University of Texas has the LBJ library.

  35. Hoodathunk says:

What is the big deal about the Bush Library? Raise funds? How much money is involved in converting a broom closet to include a copy of My Pet Goat, a sh*t stained copy of the Constitution and an empty bottle of Jack Daniels?

  36. dbearton says:

The Bush library belongs in a federal prison with its namesake.

  37. DICKERSON3870 says:

HERE’S SOMETHING FOR THE BUSH ‘LIE-BERRY’!

BUSH TO CHIRAC:“Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East”

FROM THE ARTICLE “When God Spoke to Me”:  …..During those private interviews, Jacque Chirac had purportedly confessed to the journalist some personal remarks regarding the faith of George W. Bush that seemed quite daunting. He told the journalist that the latter called him twice beseeching him basically, in the name of their common “spiritual faith”, i.e., “Christianity”, to join the collective effort of the coalition being formed to wage a preemptive war against Iraq. In his first telephonic call he reportedly said to Jacque Chirac: “Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East” and then added that “the biblical prophecies are being fulfilled”…..

  38. wiley says:

Every time I hear someone say they went to Texas once and hated it, I ask them if they went to Midland-Odessa. It appears to be statistically likely among the thoroughly repelled by Texas. I think Bush’s library should be in the flat lands, on a highway, between a Stuckey’s and a Motel 8.

  39. Molly says:

As a former Methodist with lots of ministers in the family…can only guess that money was the hook. Then bush’s reputation went south…now they are so stuck.

  40. neoconsrscum says:

I was raised Methodist and have an uncle who’se a minister-retired-

-they didn’t speak out over the Iraq invasion, or not enough.

I also seem to remember KKKarl Rove (miss Piggy) retaliated against the few who did-

Chimp’s the anti-academic- those bones secreted in that tomb at Yale may very well be his departed ghost-writers who ‘helped’ him graddy-ate from his undergrad/ MBA “studies.”

  41. Frankly_my_dear says:

Perhaps SMU can change its name to the Southern Methodist University of Technology so that everyone can refer to the Bush Library at SMUT. I doubt if they would go so far as to change their name to the Sam Houston Institute of Technology.

  42. sicnarfe says:

It pleases me to read the comments of real people and I’m once again assured of my faith in my fellow countrymen and women. The cabal of excrement that was flushed in November should not be allowed to get away with their crimes. As evident by the action taken by Gerald Ford toward Nixon in allowing his crimes to go unpunished, had the effect of opening up the floodgates to the likes of Bush/Cheney. Cheney being on the inside of the Nixon regime, saw his opportunity to further the evil that had been simmering waiting for the chance to screw the American people for the benefit of the parasitic aristocratic class that has evolve in this nation, by taking upon himself the VP slot. We all know what followed, and most it was lawless abuse of power. We still have not had an open and truthful investigation into the events surrounding the alleged terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The corporate media circus has shown it’s disdain for us common folks by failing to report on the events, except when something slips out inadvertently, like when Peter Jennings made the correct statement about the way the buildings fell: like a demolition. The corporate media no longer broadcast footage of the demolition/collapse of building number 7 WTC. That forty-seven storey skyscraper was not hit during the crashing of the jets into the twin towers, yet the cover story was that there was a fire in the basement of #7 WTC which brought it down. Coincidentally, #7 WTC housed the SEC and all their records pertaining to upcoming criminal cases were apparently vanished by the destruction of the building. We still do not understand what happened to the aircraft that was alleged to have struck the Pentagon. There was no debris consistent with the crashing of a Boeing 757 into that building. The aircraft that went down near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, left a sizeable impression in the ground and then promptly vanished. We need to get to the bottom of the criminal acts that allowed the cabal of evildoers to trump up their phony “war on terra” for the benefit of their cronies, aides, and abettors. The thought just occurred to me that perhaps Jennings’ demise might have been triggered by the Cheney hit squad.

  43. smchris says:

Hyperbole. The good professors should be able to find work elsewhere. The bad professors have made their bed. SMU can always recruit from the community colleges. PhDs are a dime a dozen.
