ThinkFast: March 13, 2009

cramerstew.jpg

In their much-anticipated face-off, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart told CNBC’s Jim Cramer, “I understand that you want to make finance entertaining, but it’s not a f**king game.” Lobbing a series of tough questions at Cramer, Stewart got increasingly upset over CNBC’s complicity in sheltering a financial industry built on lies and deceit. “Who are you responsible to? The people with the 401(k)’s or the guys on Wall Street?” Stewart asked. (Watch the videos here, here, and here.)

Two judges in California recently said that it is unconstitutional for the federal government to deny benefits to legally married same-sex couples. OPM has “instructed insurers not to provide the benefits,” citing the Defense of Marriage Act. President Obama — who promised to “fight hard” for the rights of same-sex couples — has not yet said whether he will side with OPM or the judges.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is not ruling out running as a Democratic candidate in his reelection race in 2012,” The Hill reports. However, though Lieberman said being an “independent Democrat” gives him “options,” when asked whether he would be more likely to run as a Democrat in 2012, he replied, “I wouldn’t reach that conclusion.”

The Federal Reserve said yesterday that the “wealth of American families plunged nearly 18% in 2008,” a loss totaling $11 trillion. The bust follows an “extraordinary boom” which saw “household wealth more than [double] from 1990 to 2000, and then, after a pause, [rise] nearly 50% before the bust of 2008.”

According to the Wall Street Journal’s most recent forecasting survey, in a poll of 49 economists, “more than 40 percent of respondents thought a second large stimulus package is necessary to jump-start the economy.”

A new Government Accountability Office report released today says that “[f]raud and abuse helped boost Medicare spending on home health services 44% over five years as some providers exaggerated patients’ medical conditions and others billed for unnecessary services or care they did not provide.” In 2008, ‘Medicare spent about $16.5 billion on home care for the services reviewed by the GAO.”

Democratic lawmakers in Texas have “vowed to try to overturn” Gov. Rick Perry’s (R) decision to turn down $555 million or expanded unemployment benefits from the federal stimulus package. State senator Wendy Davis (D) said, “After declaring his unconscionable decision today…Gov. Perry will be resting comfortably tonight in a home paid for by Texas taxpayers.”

A bipartisan group of nine U.S. senators “is nearing an agreement on the broad strokes of a health care reform bill.” After meeting for nine months behind closed doors, the group is “hammering out the finer points as they prepare to enter the drafting phase of the negotiations.” The talks have been held in parallel to negotiations with outside groups orchestrated by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA).

The world is facing an increasing risk of ‘irreversible’ climate shifts because worst-case scenarios warned of two years ago are being realized,” according to a new report. The report, which came at the close of a three-day conference where nearly 2,000 researchers gathered to discuss climate change, calls on “policy-makers to use all tools available to reduce dangerous emissions of greenhouse gases.”

And finally: “With the world swirling about it, the House took a moment Thursday to honor pi, the Greek letter symbolizing that great constant in mathematics representing the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter,” reports Politico. “I’m kind of geeked up about it,” said Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA). Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) was a little less into it, saying, “We were never good at math in my family. I thought I was voting for p-i-e.”

    JON STEWART.

    TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT.

    “IT’S NOT A FCUKING GAME”.

Something I’ve been touting to anyone who asked for “stock advice” over the past 5 years.

  2. Patty says:

Stewart’s program — although difficult to watch because of Cramer’s squirming — should be packaged and delivered to every doorstep.

  3. aquarius2 says:

Hooray for Jon Stewart! What an interview.

  4. DNFP says:

The Federal Reserve said yesterday that the “wealth of American families plunged nearly 18% in 2008,

Gains seen on paper do not translate to ACTUAL wealth.

    Same goes for the losses.

  5. aquarius2 says:

Did I miss any discussion of Jon Stewart on MSNBC or even NBC this morning? Could it be after the truthful and scathing interview of Cramer that the NBC families are going to ignore it? Do they honestly think that ignoring the truth is going to make it disappear?

  6. BearCountry says:

I think that joLIE will wind up retiring from the Senate and go from parttime lobbyist for big PharMA to full time. I suspect that by the time 2012 rolls around, the opposition to him will be overwhelming.

  7. larkohio says:

I love Jon Stewert. He tells it like it is, and is so darn funny doing it. He nailed Cramer.

  8. DRxJ says:

John Stewart has some cajones, eh?
It’s sad and telling when an “entertainer” asks the hard hitting questions, which are completely ignored by the paid journalists.

I truly believe that if the so called liberal media would have actually done their job and reported the errs of the WMD fiasco, Bush would not have served a second term, lives would have been saved, the thought of torture would not have been so damn complacent, and the economy would not be in the $hitter.
    (My opinion, of course)

  9. Shayne says:

Thank you Jon Stewart for showing those so called legitimate news people how their jobs should be done. President Obama should award you a medal.

In all fairness, I would vote for pie as well.

  13. Zimzone says:

Cramer literally got his ass handed to him last night.

He came out with his shirt sleeves rolled up like he was going to really be doing some hard work.

He left with his tail between his legs, completely pulverized.

As I noted yesterday, something’s drastically wrong with media when the best political & market analysis is on a COMEDY show.

Now I want to see Stewart pound doughboy Lindsay Graham…

  14. Uncle Ho says:

    Good morning, campers

    TGIF

    (just for you, deebaser)
    :-)

  15. jonwash says:

Jon Stewart is an American hero but I have to at least give Jim Crammer some props for being willing to subject himself to that brutal tongue lashing. I suspect he had no choice because those video clips that Stewart had were devastating! I too noticed this morning that Morning Joe did not have much to say about the interview if anything (I came in late on the show this morning) Stewart is pointing out the duplicity in the Financial News reporting but what they do not understand is that is just one example of the overall failure of the media to do its job!! It is all about entertaining and selling panty hose and Viagra!

  16. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

“Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is not ruling out running as a Democratic candidate in his reelection race in 2012,”

He might as well go straight to Independent because he will lose in a primary if he runs as a Democrat. I think that Holy Joe should retire because I think there’s little chance the people of CT will send him back to the Senate.

  17. DRxJ says:

If anyone can watch the video, please do!
Pay attention to John’s facial expression and body language.
He’s truly concerned, and pissed off!

This is NOT an act, folks.
This is NOT a conglomerate of talking points sanctioned by a political party.
This IS the way journalism should be!!!

  18. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

The bust follows an “extraordinary boom” which saw “household wealth more than [double] from 1990 to 2000, and then, after a pause, [rise] nearly 50% before the bust of 2008.”

Those statistics must include the very rich along with the average Joe. Because the average Joe’s wealth didn’t double from 1990 to 2000. Most of that “wealth” was paper wealth, not real dollars and cents.

  19. deebaser says:

Thanks Uncle Ho… I needed that.
    =D

  20. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

A new Government Accountability Office report released today says that “[f]raud and abuse helped boost Medicare spending on home health services 44% over five years as some providers exaggerated patients’ medical conditions and others billed for unnecessary services or care they did not provide.”

And Bush simply ignored the fraud. Why? Because it was his rich friends who were the ones who were committing the fraud. George Bush saw the federal treasury as a piggy bank for him and his friends to loot and they did an excellent job of it.

  21. Uncle Ho says:

    deebaser says:

    You are welcome.

  22. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

According to the Wall Street Journal’s most recent forecasting survey, in a poll of 49 economists, “more than 40 percent of respondents thought a second large stimulus package is necessary to jump-start the economy.”

I would like to know the percentage who thought a second stimulus wouldn’t be needed and the percentage who just don’t know.

  23. CageyCretin says:

This “secon stimulus” flap is moronic.

How about we FIRST get the FIRST stimulus out and ENSURE that it is allocated AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE (don’t let the (R)’s intentionally derail the recovery, as is their intention).

THEN how about enforcing a to-the-penny accountability of the TARP funds, and recovery/fines/jail time where need be.

JUST doing those two things will go a LOOOOONNNNG way to recovery. THEN a considering second package may be reasonable. Not that it cannot be discussed at this point, but it is folly to ignore those two items.

  24. Marie says:

    What about this?
CBS News’ Chip Reid was questioning Robert Gibbs about health care spending when he made this catty side:
“Democrats…also raising their ugly heads today.”

Is Reid planning to fill the seat of Jeff Gannon by inflicting his personal views on us and setting the policitcal arena with prejudice through outrageous questions?

  25. Marie says:

Stewart made mincemeat of Cramer, who was like a child called into the principal’s office. It was uncomfortable to watch, but Stewart was spot on with his assessment and criticism.

  26. The Dogfather says:

Jon Stewart has been on fire all week…Must See TV indeed…

As for honoring pi: “I’m kind of geeked up about it,” said Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA). “Geeked” up about honoring a mathematical constant??? Thanks, Dr. Obvious…

  27. RUCerious says:

    DNFP Says:
The Federal Reserve said yesterday …
Gains seen on paper do not translate to ACTUAL wealth.
    Same goes for the losses.

Yes, but in the minds of the consumer, where the ultimate reality lies, it really lies, when you think your house is worth twice what you paid for it three years ago, and have borrowed against that phantom equity…

  28. RUCerious says:

Lieberman said being an “independent Democrat” gives him “options,” when asked whether he would be more likely to run as a Democrat in 2012, he replied, “I wouldn’t reach that conclusion.”

Liebernam(I-Israel) will undoubtedly start his own Traitors for Israel First party, with Joe as the sole, and charter member.

  29. RUCerious says:

  31. Marie says:

When the media failed in its reporting on George Bush, the war, and the criminal activity of his administration, some of us were outraged and made our voices heard, only to be marginalized.
Now that it’s apparent the media has failed in its reporting on financial affairs, letting the liars lie, letting the deregulators remove safeguards, resulting in ordinary people losing retirement savings, educational savings, and their general financial well-being, perhaps the groundswell from the public will persuade the media to do their job as the fourth estate. If pocketbooks promote action….

I am not optimistic, however, when I see reporters like Chip Reid inserting his own bias into his reporting and getting away with it. SSDD.

  32. unbelievable says:

Jon Stewart deserves one of every Journalism award that exists. He was utterly brilliant this week!

Too bad we can’t get that from the MSM – ever. Then perhaps America would already have health care, gay marriage, and equality like the rest of the Westernized world…

  33. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    DRxJ Says:
John Stewart has some cajones, eh?
It’s sad and telling when an “entertainer” asks the hard hitting questions, which are completely ignored by the paid journalists

The same happened in the presidential race when the gals on the View asked harder hitting questions than the MSM.

I think we really only have one true reporter left and that would be Sy Hirsch. If I was Hirsch, I would be hiring a body guard after his revelations about Cheney and his assassination squad. I forget who it was on Countdown last night that said “If Sy Hirsch says it, you need to pay attention because he is rarely wrong”. I think that Hirsch owes it to the US public to reveal this story now rather than waiting for his book to be published.

  34. livelongandprosper says:

Jon Stewart deserves one of every Journalism award that exists. He was utterly brilliant this week!

And people wondered what he would do with Bush off his decider role. There is plenty for Stewart to lampoon. I think that he can concentrate on more issues now that the Bush nightmare is over.

  35. RUCerious says:

Thanks for pointing out that corruption can affect Democrats as well as Repuglycans, watchpup.
Got anything of value to add to the Cramer humiliation?

  36. RUCerious says:

And, yes, as sad as it is, like many on this thread have pointed out…
It’s a damn sad day for the Fourth Estate when the real journalism has to be found on a comedy channel.
    Geebutz Hornblower Kreist.

  37. RUCerious says:

What? The police union doesn’t have charging authority?
    Oh.

I am very disappointed in Gibbs for letting Reid get away with it. He should have told him that what he said was inappropriate and gone on to the next reporter. Instead, Gibbs laughed like Reid had made a funny.

On the other hand, I doubt that Reid will be called on again for a long time. He pretty much slit his own throat.

    Good try though. No, really.

  47. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

RUCerious, now that’s an interesting question. If TP does, indeed, have an invisible fence then perhaps these mutts are kept away from the general public, a good thing. Of course, maybe it needs to be rerouted so the mutts do not continue to leave droppings on all our threads. Perhaps a “think slow thread”?

  48. pd says:

As many people have commented previously, it is sad when you can only get insightful commentary from a comedy show. The MSM as well as the financial “specialists” should hang their heads in shame for botching their reporting on the Wall Street meltdown. There are three possibilities as I see it. 1)They were somehow complicit or beholden to Wall Street interests. 2) They stuck their heads in the sand in the guise of wanting to remain “objective”. 3)They suck at their jobs.

  49. 666trolls says:

That was definitely the best Daily Show interview that I’ve seen in a long time… maybe ever.

Jon could have been more comedic and sarcastic, but apparently calculated the amount of attention this interview was attracting and instead used the opportunity to educate everyone watching in some form or another. It was simply brilliant!

Remember when ‘The Half Hour Comedy Hour’ thought they could rival The Daily Show?

I’m all the more impressed because Stewart’s demeanor of comedy host obscures the fact that his intellect packs a wallop.

Cramer appeared armed with conditional mea culpas that Stewart was having none of. Cramer’s own damning video left him without a leg to stand on or a refuge from which to claim the role of ‘behind-the-scenes-reformer.’

Cramer joins the sprawled detritus of former self-proclaimed ‘gladiators’ such as Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala; having been planted squarely on their @sses by a slight-build comedian armed with facts.

Something our vaunted fourth estate was/is incapable of.

Jon Stewart tells jokes; the MSM is one.

I have to disagree with that. There are plenty of other good reporters and journalists out there who are doing some quality work – Greg Palast, Jeremy Scahill, Sam Stein, Amy Goodman, and Naomi Klein, to name a few. They’re just not in the mainstream.

  56. The Dogfather says:

Hey, WatchedFrog: as you would know if you lived in the DC area (which I do), the story you’re posting about has nothing to do with the Obama administration, and has everything to do with the DC city government. Those of us in the area saw this story on last night’s news, yawned and said “DC government has corruption — yeah, let me know when there’s actual news there…”.

Nice job trying to connect it to Obama, however. But since the FBI and the news stations haven’t done so, I think you lose as usual…

    Pi = 3.14159265……

The 3 is interpreted as March and 14 as the 14th day. That leaves 159265 so you could use hour 15 (3 pm) but that leaves 9265 seconds which is the next minute which is messy in mathematics. So, 159 is interpreted to be 1 pm and 59 seconds.
