Karl Rove Falsely Claims He Never Threatened Anybody Who Disagreed With Him

Last night on Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, former Bush adviser Karl Rove brazenly claimed that he never used his White House position to threaten anyone.

Host Bill O’Reilly caught Rove off-guard with this question: “Now in the Bush White House, did you guys ever threaten anybody who disagreed with you?” Rove hesitated, sputtered, and responded, “Not that — not that — you know — not that I recall.” O’Reilly pressed the point:

O’REILLY: So you never threatened?

ROVE: No.

The smirk on Rove’s face suggested that even he had a hard time believing his own answer. Watch it:

Rove — the political architect of dirty tricks — clearly did use his position in the White House to engage in vindictive political attacks against his perceived enemies:

– Punished Iraq war whistleblower Joe Wilson by outing his wife Valerie Plame, who was an undercover intelligence agent

– Drove a politically-charged prosecution of former Democratic Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman

– Orchestrated the political firings of U.S. attorneys

– Threatened the late Michael Connell and demanded he “take the fall” for election fraud in Ohio

– Pressured the Texas Secretary of State to fire an attorney in his office for making comments that reflected poorly on him

All this does not even include Rove’s alleged role in the Swift Boat smears against John Kerry, the whisper campaign against Ann Richards that questioned her sexuality, and the attacks on John McCain’s mental health in South Carolina in 2000.

In 2007, Rove also issued this public threat against House GOP congressmen who dared to criticize Bush on Iraq. “Nobody can risk looking disrespectful to the president without paying a price, and they need to understand that,” he said.

  5. KayInMaine says:

It wasn’t just Rove doing the threatening. I remember when Joe Biden was picked by Barack Obama to the VP and Biden said in his acceptance speech to the members of Congress, (paraphrasing but pretty close), “You will never hear the words, ‘The vice president is on the phone’”, which meant Dick Cheney was constantly calling Congress to get what he wanted and I’m sure it was most likely threatening calls for Biden to make such a statement to Congress as he did.

  6. 1st Republic 14th Star says:

Rove is a dirt bag, plain and simple. His cynical criminal machinations go back to the early 1970s, when he fixed the election for president of the College Republicans.

The bogus FBI investigations of Democrats in Texas during the 1980s and 1990s which fueled the GOP takeover of every statewide office in Texas.

In 1986, Rove bugged his own office while he was working for the campaign of former Governor Bill Clements and then tried to blame it on incumbent Governor Mark White.

In 1989 and 1990, every single Democrat running statewide in Texas was investigated by the FBI. The man behind it was Rove’s friend in the FBI, Greg Rampton.

Karl Rove is a criminal. He’s amoral. How anyone in the media thinks it’s acceptable to pay him a salary for offering commentary and analysis is beyond me. They ought to be incensed at a liar who thinks nothing of using the criminal justice system for political advantage.

Everyone here this morning has said everything I want to say also.
Rove’s countenance belies his words of denial, but that sort of thing doesn’t hold up legally, I know.
I also had the impression that OReilly knows Rove is lying and smugly presented Rove an opportunity to do so.

  9. Marie says:

Anyone who cares to look at the historical facts of the acts of Karl Rove, would find ample evidence, proof, of his threats, his illegal activities, his lack of morality and ethics, and his treason.

Technically, Karl is right. He didn’t “threaten” people, he just stabbed them in the back, poisoned their wine or had someone big and strong garotte them. No threats needed.

  14. barfly says:

But is Rove still welcome in republican enclaves? I don’t hear much about Karl on the lucrative speaker’s-circuit.

  15. tbone says:

The truly sick thing is that Rove knows he has gotten away with unscrupulous and illegal activities. Not only does he not care or feel remorse. He RELISHES the fact. I think he is proud of his machinations and enjoys going on tv, making big money, and flaunting his status in the face of congressional subpoenas. He oozes self-satisfaction, knowing full well that he will NEVER (I hope I am wrong.) pay for his deeds.

    Right.
Trolls and all repugniscum will not give Obama any credit for this as it has all happened too soon. But of course, they were very quick to blame him for the downturn of the last four months (having begun one year ago, when Bush was in charge and fiddling).
Actually, Gibbs said yesterday, they are not unfolding any mission accomplished banner because they are realistic and know that a good week – while a very pleasant change – does not mean the worst is over.
To your point, however, I agree.

  39. osage says:

BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political control that they enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They/Rove made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and “advocate” the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party. The survival of today’s shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America’s increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

The idiom about choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery. Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and their disgraceful and shameless licking of Rush Limbaugh’s storm trooper boots is costing them their viability.

  41. Hoodathunk says:

I can understand how Rove can say he never threatened anyone. Threats are things you don’t necessarily follow up on. If you actually do the deed, it ceases to be a threat and becomes an action. A semantically smooth bit of juggling but since Republicans live in the now and can’t even spell history, it seems to work for them.

It’s either that or threatening is such a natural response to Karl Rove that he can’t see the forest through the trees at this point? Hey could be.

  43. Rich H says:

The only thing I need to see from Rove is him in an orange jumpsuit being led to prison. The only thing I need to hear from him are whimpers. Nothing else will do.

  44. Patty says:

In Rove’s sewaged mind, he can rationalize that, indeed, he never “threatened.”

    He promised consequences.

He had his people convey messages.

And that phrase “I do not recall” means only at that instant he is not recalling. It in no way conveys the ability to recall.

Really, really hoping that questions are framed to avoid the possibility of squirming, for example, using the phrase “communicate” rather than “say” or “tell.”

“The whole truth” means nothing to this slug.

  45. Patty says:

What about that whole tirade of a few years back, during which the person (can’t remember who) waiting in the hall outside Mr. Rove’s office heard the lovely public servant shouting/screaming, “We’ll f…. him! We’ll f… him like he’s never been f…ed before!!!”

Then, according to the first-hand report, a red-faced Mr. Rove opened the door and politely greeted the person waiting.

Guess that was a “promise” too.

  46. mongo says:

The real issue is does the United States enforce the rule of law or not? If I ignored a congressional supeona, I would go directly to jail. Apparently the law does not apply to all Americans equally.

I submit that the United States is currently in a state of anarchy. The citizens of the United States are no longer have any constitutional obligation to follow ANY law, if those laws do not apply to Rove, Bush and Cheney. Until such time as justice is applied to these three, who have already been tried and found guilty in the court of public opinion, America is not a nation of laws.

  55. Fool Zero says:

I tried to post a brief quote from this Ron Suskind article but the post didn’t go through. My excerpt did contain some strong language by Rove (which I ‘d carefully euphemized with strategically-placed asterisks). If the filter here that sensitive?

Anyway, my point was that Rove didn’t threaten; he simply announced to his team what was going to happen to the intended target, then set about making it happen. When a court sentences someone to the death penalty, that’s not intended as a threat, either.

  56. Fool Zero says:

    Patty @ 46:

… the person (can’t remember who) waiting in the hall outside Mr. Rove’s office heard the lovely public servant shouting/screaming, “We’ll f…. him! We’ll f… him like he’s never been f…ed before!!!”

That’s the article I was trying to quote. The person sitting outside was Ron Suskind. I guess I must’ve left too many letters intact in the quoted f-word.

  57. delafield says:

    Levi the Oracle Says:

Apparently the law does not apply to all Americans equally.

If justice existed in America, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney would have been arrested, convicted, and sentenced to hang for putting nearly 6,000 American Marines in the grave for a pack of lies.

  58. And Yet... says:

How humorous is this- my Ron Suskind quote & link ‘way way earlier apparently censored. Well, *g*- I’ll try not to quote KKKarl this time the way he apparently f-cking said this according to Suskind:

    http://www.ronsuskind.com/newsite/articles/archives/000032.html
“Eventually, I met with Rove. I arrived at his office a few minutes early, just in time to witness the Rove Treatment, which, like LBJ’s famous browbeating style, is becoming legend but is seldom reported. Rove’s assistant, Susan Ralston, said he’d be just a minute. She’s very nice, witty and polite. Over her shoulder was a small back room where a few young men were toiling away. I squeezed into a chair near the open door to Rove’s modest chamber, my back against his doorframe.

Inside, Rove was talking to an aide about some political stratagem in some state that had gone awry and a political operative who had displeased him. I paid it no mind and reviewed a jotted list of questions I hoped to ask. But after a moment, it was like ignoring a tornado flinging parked cars. “We will f_ck him. Do you hear me? We will fu_ck him. We will ruin him. Like no one has ever f_cked him!”
