Cheney’s Excuse For Economic Failures Under His Watch: ‘Stuff Happens’

During an interview with Dick Cheney this morning, CNN host John King asked the former vice president why “we should listen to you” for economic advice. To make his case, King noted the following statistical changes that occurred under the Bush/Cheney administration:

Unemployment rate: Rose from 4.2 percent to 7.6 percent
Poverty: Jumped from 32.9 million individuals to 37.3 million
Uninsured: Escalated from 41.2 million individuals to 45.7 million
Budget deficit: Inherited budget surplus of $128 billion and left office with $1.3 trillion deficit

“So what would you say to someone out there watching this who’s saying why should they listen to you?” King asked. Cheney responded that there’s “all kinds of arguments that could be made,” but he emphasized that there is “something more important than” the specific numbers King cited — namely, 9/11.

Cheney argued the Bush administration had to spend (without paying for it) because it went into “wartime mode.” Cheney also referenced the need to spend money after the Katrina disaster:

All of these things required us to spend money that we had not originally planned to spend or weren’t originally part of the budget. Stuff happens. And the administration has to be able to respond to that, and we did.

Watch it:

Recall, Cheney’s good friend — former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld — said shortly after the invasion of Iraq: “Stuff happens…freedom’s untidy. And people are free to make mistakes.”

By Cheney’s logic, the U.S. could no longer care about poverty, the uninsured, or the unemployed after 9/11. Those issues were not deemed “important” enough to address.

    Hey Dick:

Remember when, as CEO of HAL, you acquired Dresser as a favor to the Bush Crime Family to relieve them of the billions of dollars in Asbestos liabilities. Clearly there was no good business reason, as it crushed HAL’s stock value in the markets (as you knew it would). Your acquisition put the world’s largest asbestos liability (the World Trade Center) squarely on your books, and the Port Authority wanted HAL to pay $12 billion to dismantle the Twin Towers.

Ken Lay, GHW and you figured out that you could call on your Mossad co-conspirators to work up a false flag attack designed to make it look like jets brought them down, when in fact, it was the “Dancing Israelis” – caught red-handed celebrating their handy work on 9/11 – who pre-wired the THREE buildings for demolition.

You ran the whole operation from the basement of the White House, in concert with Raytheon and numerous Shadow Government insiders, and Norm Mineta caught you in the act. Didn’t it suck when you had to shoot down that plane over Pennsylvania – you know, the one that was supposed to slam into WTC-7? Totally screwed things up for you, didn’t it?

But you managed to detonated all three buildings regardless, and enrich Silverstein with your pre-arranged arson/insurance fraud scam, thanks to your good buddy, Warren.

We know what you did, Dick. We know the no-bid HAL contracts for your pre-planned war were simply quid pro quo from the GHW Bush / David Rockefeller Shadow Government. We know that Dov Zakheim and Kobi Alexander are central to the “success” of your 9/11 Treason. We also know that Israel is blackmailing you and the entire shadow government.

    You’re busted, Dick.

    LEVELS OF ASBESTOS

A statement about discovery of asbestos at higher than safe levels in dust samples from lower Manhattan was changed to state that “samples confirm previous reports that ambient air quality meets OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards and consequently is not a cause for public concern.”

Language in an EPA draft stating that asbestos levels in some areas were three times higher than national standards was changed to “slightly above the 1 percent trigger for defining asbestos material.”

This sentence was added to a Sept. 16 news release: “Our tests show that it is safe for New Yorkers to go back to work in New York’s financial district.” It replaced a statement that initial monitors failed to turn up dangerous samples.

A warning on the importance of safely handling ground zero cleanup, due to lead and asbestos exposure, was changed to say that some contaminants had been noted downtown but “the general public should be very reassured by initial sampling.”

Small business is the path of advancement, especially for women and minorities, so we must free small businesses from needless regulation and protect honest job-creators from junk lawsuits. (Applause.) Justice is distorted, and our economy is held back by irresponsible class-actions and frivolous asbestos claims — and I urge Congress to pass legal reforms this year.”

  18. plunger says:

on August 11, 2002, The Olympian (from Olympia, WA), carried a Washington Post article noting that:

“Dresser had close ties to a family Cheney knew well: the Bushes. Cheney’s boss while he served as Secretary of Defense, President George H.W. Bush, was once being groomed to run Dresser, a company that Bush’s father and grandfather had reshaped decades earlier.

When Dresser went public in the 1920s, it turned to W.A. Harriman & Co., whose president was George Herbert Walker, grandfather and namesake to former president Bush. Prescott Bush, the former president’s father, helped organize Dresser and select its new president, H. Neil Mallon. Prescott Bush eventually sat on the board and by 1941, still held 1,900 shares of Dresser stock. Mallon was so close to former president Bush that he described him in his autobiography as “surrogate uncle and father-confessor.” One of his sons, Neil Mallon Bush, is named after him. After World War II, Mallon employed George H.W. Bush and Dresser executives expected him to take over the company, according to journalist Darwin Payne, who wrote a history of Dresser. Instead, the former president left to prospect for oil.

While Cheney saw sound business reasons for acquiring Dresser, there was a problem in its past — the use of asbestos in Harbison-Walker division products.”

That’s Walker, as in George Herbert WALKER Bush.

When you view any video of the plane striking the second WTC Tower, isn’t it astounding how huge the fireball is that results? How much jet fuel was that…really?

Remember the big Boeing Tanker lease scandal that arose just prior to 9/11?

    Dov Zakheim:

A respected and established voice in the intelligence community, his views were eagerly accepted, and Dov went from his position at Systems Planning Corporation to become the Comptroller of the Pentagon in May 2001. Perhaps not so coincidentally, it was an SPC subsidiary, TRIDATA CORPORATION, that oversaw the investigation after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993.

SPC, according to their official website, specializes in many areas of defense technology production and manufacture, including a system developed by their Radar Physics Group called the Flight Termination System, or FTS. This is a system used to destroy target drones (craft that would be fired on by test aircraft or weaponry) in the event of malfunction or “misses”. This highly sophisticated war-game technology allows the control of several ‘drones’ from a remote location, on varying frequencies, and has a range of several hundred miles. This technology can be used on many different types of aircraft, including large passenger jets.

According to the SPC website, a recent customer at that time was Eglin AFB, located in Florida. Eglin is very near another Air Force base in Florida-MacDill AFB, where Dov Zakheim contracted to send at least 32 Boeing 767 aircraft, as part of the Boeing /Pentagon tanker lease agreement.

The Boeing lease deal involved the replacement of the aging KC-135 tanker fleet with these smaller, more efficient Boeing 767s that were to be leased by Dov Zakheim’s group. The planes were to be refitted with refueling equipment, including lines and nozzle assemblies.

Did John King just take a cue, albeit a tiny fraction of one, from Jon Stewart? He actually presented facts and tried to call Cheney out. It’s not the truth. It’s a hypothesis. And it’s not based on Engioneering Science. I know, because I’ve studies Statics and practiced in the real world on real buildings.

Besides, it’s been debated ad nauseum, and TP doesn’t want it clogging up the threads because that’s exactly what happens when you start posting about it.

There are plenty of blogs where you can go to discuss it. This just isn’t one of them. And you could get banned if you persist. I’m just letting you know.

  37. plunger says:

    Briseadh na Faire:

Thanks for standing up. Who else is tired of others telling them what not to talk about?

As for the images of what hit the Pentagon, the satellite imagery is the best evidence. The entire government knows precisely what hit it (an A-3 Skywarrior).

Mineta testified under oath that he witnessed Cheney order the stand down of Pentagon defenses as the jet/missile was tracked for over 50 miles to its known target.

  38. PrahaPartizan says:

We also shouldn’t forget the issue which confronted the Republican Party. The only factor on which they were rated more highly than the Democrats was “National Security.” Take away that issue, because of their total incompetence in defending the nation against attack on domestic soil by foreign agents, and the Republicans are left with no reason for existence. Cheney tried to hide that fact for seven long years and it is now coming out full force. Facts do have a liberal bias in this reality.

  39. Briseadh na Faire says:

Plunger, Unbelievable, TP, if Cheney thinks 9/11 is the all-important number, then so should we.

President Obama’s Justice Department should launch a criminal probe into the events of that day.

  40. PrahaPartizan says:

Afterthought: why hasn’t anyone also mentioned the anthrax attacks. We now know Saddam Hussein didn’t pose a threat. We get attacked only weeks after 9-11 and the attacks are directed solely at “liberal” targets, very strange for opponents who want to attack the US command authority. Everything gets hushed up and virtually nothing gets done for seven years. Suddenly a potential person of interest dies and gets blamed, but nothing is ever proven. Worse, after his death and vilification, more information surfaces which says he probably wasn’t the perpetrator. Could a shadowy figure inside the US government been the instigator of those attacks and subsequent deaths. Hell, the victims were just peons and “collateral damage” in that person’s point of view. “Whatever it takes,” right?

  41. Badger says:

With regards to the Anthrax attacks.

    As Glenn Greenwald has written….

“ABC News, led by Brian Ross, continuously trumpeted the claim as their top news story that government tests conducted on the anthrax — tests conducted at Ft. Detrick — revealed that the anthrax sent to Daschele contained the chemical additive known as bentonite. ABC News, including Peter Jennings, repeatedly claimed that the presence of bentonite in the anthrax was compelling evidence that Iraq was responsible for the attacks, since — as ABC variously claimed — BENTONITE “is a trademark of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s biological weapons program” and “only one country, Iraq, has used bentonite to produce biological weapons.”

There NEVER WAS any BENTONITE found in any of the Samples Tested…So Who told ABC that there was?????

MY GUESS…..Someone with a vested interest in attacking Iraq.

I’m serious – wake up and learn how to detect shills who are trying to “steer” conversation, and they always call people “conspiracy theorists”, “nuts”, etc…and they always appear for the first time ever in a conversation and you never see them again. Always about 9/11 and any talk about Israel.

It’s all about weaseling out of responsibility for George and Dick. I seem to recall when the economy in 2000 went into a recession as the financial markets were uneasy with the election having no winner for several weeks while the courts were deciding the race. That recession Bush and Cheney blamed on Clinton (like everything else even remotely (or not) connected to him). Now, in 2008 when it’s them leaving office with the economy in tatters (worse than it’s been in generations), all of a sudden the previous admin isn’t responsible? Hypocritical, but hardly surprising since these criminals have never owned up to their responsibility for anything.

Let’s put him on trial for treason, war crimes and crimes against humanity and when he is convicted, we can say ‘Stuff Happens’.

I find the conversation regarding what actually happened on 9/11 to be interesting. I hadn’t heard the asbestos ideas before… mainly because I haven’t followed the various theories.

I can, however concur that there was a “stand down” order given to at least one flight team …if the stories some pilots told later are to be believed. The rationale (and it certainly could be true) was that American-flagship civilian aircraft are off limits to military engagement.

This line of commentary does relate to the article above because of the undeniable fact… Cheney and Bush stake every damn thing they did or didn’t do on this one day!

Whether some of the posters here have found some truth or not… I have no idea. I have, however, strongly sensed that there was manipulation of the events of that day that was not merely initiated in an “enemy” camp.
