After string of gaffes, Steele ‘has called a halt to his television appearances.’

ap061108039936.jpg The past few weeks have been tough for RNC chairman Michael Steele, who is facing conservative disappointment and outrage over comments criticizing Rush Limbaugh and saying that women have the right to choose abortion. (He has backed down from both statements.) According to the Washington Post, Steele is now taking some time off from the national spotlight to focus on “nuts and bolts“:

After two weeks of public drubbing over comments that included criticism of radio host Rush Limbaugh and a reference to abortion as a matter of “individual choice,” Steele is taking steps to address some of the concerns about his early gaffes. He has called a halt to his television appearances and curtailed national media interviews. [...]

Anderson said that while Steele “pulled himself back a little bit” from TV appearances after his gaffes, the chairman will remain accessible as a spokesman for the party.

“He’s going to be a communicator — that’s his nature,” Anderson said. “But you have to do it strategically.”

“But you have to do it strategically.” In other words, nowhere near any type of recording device. Not to mention the “out of sight, out of mind” advantage.

  4. stjack says:

to me what this says is that steele was never meant to be a leader of the gop, just a figurehead. a neutered, ineffectual figurehead. and he failed even at that.

“the man of steel, the man of power,
we’re losing control by the hour…”
    –land of confusion (a propos?)

    – - Ironically, Steele was picked for his deft communication skills. Wait, maybe that was deaf communcation skills.

I guess we won’t be seeing his hip-hop, “rap off” against Stephen Colbert after all, even though Steele said twice he would do that.

Poor Steele..the guy is actually fairly reasonable and thoughtful in his answers, and thats why the republicans want to shut him up…he apparently hasnt learn to parrot the generic right wing talking points, it seems like hes actually trying to engage in a thoughtful analysis of some of the issues he’s discussing..which is why the republicans need to shut him up!

  9. Keith H. says:

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Steele has been forced to take some personal time off in order to focus on his nuts and bolts.
So, affectionately representing Mr. Steele, I am pleased to introduce to you, rush limbaugh.
mr. limbaugh has what doctors call, a bit of a drug problem.

  10. Above the Clouds says:

With both Steele and the GOP the problem isn’t “communication.” The problem is that they have nothing for America and any amount of “communication” won’t change that fact.

If Steele can’t handle a television camera, how’s he going to handle Al Qaeda?

(No, not the extremist movement, Al is a middle eastern interviewer for whom Steele already agreed to do an interview…)

  16. Hope says:

    The puppet – Steele

    The puppeteer – Rush

    The GOP – downhill spiral

Instead of caring for the plight of the American people, their main concern is the plight of their GOP party and getting them back into power.

Unbeknownest to the GOP party – if they helped and worked together to bring our country and it’s people back stable again, it would look like they are sincere, passionate, and a caring party. A party who’s first concern is for the American people. But, No, they rather be the party of No, and appear to be the party that does not care about anything but getting back in power.

Therefore, to the American public, each day, the GOP is the obstructionist party who doesn’t care about the plight of the American people.

Be it said, even though the Demorcratic party has always been colorful, at least they do care about the plight of the American people.

  18. hanshiro says:

Just think of the shoe endorsement deals these republicans could do!

Sarah Palin on which shoes tastes better.

Michael Steele on which shoes don’t catch on your teeth during a teevee appearance.

And george bush on which jackboots have the ’softest to the tongue’ feel….

  19. Bob says:

Steele is like New Coke, an instantly a bad idea, an attempt to copy the most popular brand. If republicans had any substance or convictions, or original, constructive ideas, they wouldn’t be trashing their national chairman.

  20. RUCerious says:

At least the Repuglycans have closed ranks on something.
They just can’t decide whose hands need to be on the pillow over his face.

He is getting the Ted Haggard treatment whereas he is being “re-programmed”. The next time we hear from Mr. Tinfoil he will sound like his mast.. I mean the Rushpuppetcant’s.

Poor fella, he thought they really liked him and that he could be a source of change.

  23. osage says:

BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political control that they enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and “advocate” the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party. The survival of today’s shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America’s increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

The idiom about choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery. Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and their disgraceful and shameless licking of Rush Limbaugh’s storm trooper boots is costing them their viability.

  24. stateofthedivision says:

There were two FDA nominations over the weekend. When did TP quit reporting news? A lack of food & drug safety mean more “buyer beware”.

Baxter’s American supplier couldn’t control hundreds of mom & pop lab suppliers in China. They substituted dangerous inputs to maximize profits.

Updated laws? Not nearly enough. Producers must understand how to make quality medicines and safe food. That requires knowledge of more than how to drive ever increasing quarterly profits.

Poor quality can destroy markets, from raw spinach to peanut butter to ground beef to securitized debt obligations. How did our leaders respond?

    Peanut butter-bankruptcy
    Ground beef-bankruptcy
Securitization-taxpayer bailout & government sponsored restart.

  25. wiley says:

“But you have to do it strategically.”

Odd that he said “you” and not “we” or “he”. I think Steele might be spending more time with his family soon. Or maybe it’s just that Grand Old Party habit of speech that makes responsibility a universal abstraction.

Mike Steele will stay away from public speaking?!? A politician trying to stay away from the media is like Rush trying to stay away from gay prostitutes and oxy. It just won’t happen. Pols shrivel up and blow away if they can’t get their mugs on the tube and gasbag for themselves and against their opponents. But, then again, maybe that’s the plan–for him to disappear from the scene. That’s too bad, because he has been such an effective spokesman–for the Democrats!

  39. delafield says:

Michael Steele doesn’t have enough hatred in his heart to lead the Republican Party. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly can spew hatred 24/7 and never bat an eye. The GOP should just give the job to Limbaugh.

What’s awesome about this is that when they dump Steele, which will be soon, it will be perceived as a blatant act of racism on the part of the goper establishment.
