No Mention Of Iraq In Bush’s Presidential Library Bio

bushbio1.gif Last week, Politico reported that President Bush’s advisers have decided to downplay the Iraq war in presentations for his presidential library:

The president’s advisers are still chewing over what topics to emphasize. Iraq is unlikely to be one of them. Advisers say they have made a specific decision to leave that verdict to history and not try to defend it at a time when Iraq could still wind up as either a democracy or a disaster.

Not only will the Iraq war be de-emphasized, it may not show up much at all. TP reader Grumpy Demo points out that Bush’s official 483-word bio on the presidential library website doesn’t have a single mention of the Iraq war. In fact, the man who once declared “I’m a war president,” has just one short paragraph devoted to national security issues — with no mention of Iraq or Afghanistan. He instead devotes a long section to his domestic accomplishments:

He signed into law tax relief that helps workers keep more of their hard-earned money, as well as the most comprehensive education reforms in a generation, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This legislation ushered in a new era of accountability, flexibility, local control, and more choices for parents, affirming our Nation’s fundamental belief in the promise of every child. President Bush also worked to improve healthcare and modernize Medicare, providing the first-ever prescription drug benefit for seniors; increase homeownership, especially among minorities; conserve our environment; and increase military strength, pay, and benefits. [...]

On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked our Nation. President Bush took unprecedented steps to protect our homeland and create a world free from terror. He is grateful for the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women in uniform and their families. The President remains confident that by helping build free and prosperous societies, our Nation and our friends and allies will succeed in making America more secure and the world more peaceful.

Also noticeably absent from Bush’s list of accomplishments is Social Security reform. In January, he cited his failed push for Social Security privatization as what he was most proud of during his time in office. (A few days later, however, he backtracked and said he regretted it.)

(ThinkProgress has been keeping a close eye on developments with the Bush library, and we will continue to do so. Read our related posts here.)

What Iraq War? There was no declaration of war, only an illegal invasion and six year occupation, costing the lives of thousands of U.S. military personnel and countless brown people’s lives.
What’s there to include in the hero worship?

It must be nice to live in a world where you can re-write history by simply wishing it to be so (and to have mainstream media with lips firmly planted on your buttocks).

    From Salon:

“The only thing that worries me is your optimism.”

So remarked José María Aznar, then the prime minister of Spain, in a prescient moment during a February 2003 conversation with George W. Bush about the impending invasion of Iraq.

    snip

“I’m optimistic because I believe I’m right,” replied the obtuse Bush. “I’m at peace with myself.” That smug statement — uttered by a man who had no idea what he was talking about and no interest in what anyone else believed — could be the epitaph for his presidency.

The war president “at peace” with himself

So I suppose since the Iraq war is not going to be mentioned, I guess bush’s library will tell us what a great job he did with, the economy, Katrina, education, global warming, no torture, no spying on Americans, deficit, healthcare, ect, ect. Boy! I can’t wait.

What does this say to the families of all those Americans who were killed or wounded in Iraq? You died for nothing?

    Disgusting.

Max-1 – you know, I hate that term as well. It sounds way too much like “Fatherland” used by the Nazis to instill nationalism in Germany. Needless to say, one of the many aspects describing a fascist country.

  18. wiley says:

If I were grading this, I’d tell the author to break this up into three paragraphs and include information.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked our Nation. President Bush took unprecedented steps to protect our homeland and create a world free from terror. blah, blah, blah

He is grateful for the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women in uniform and their families. blah, blah, blah

The President remains confident that by helping build free and prosperous societies, our Nation and our friends and allies will succeed in making America more secure and the world more peaceful. blah, blah, blah

It’s a very disjointed and somewhat defensive paragraph.

He did what he did on instructions from his corpoRat masters. It was no accident, no incompetence, no studidity, no ignorance that led us to this pretty pass.

It was planned and executed with the skill and dexterity of a military coup, except that it was a CIVILIAN coup.

Why should there be mention of Iraq? According to all I’ve heard lately, it’s Obama’s war that was voted for by the majority of Democrats in congress. And the economic collapse? Obama owns it now, and it’s the result of Barnie Frank pushing Freddie and Fannie to issue loans to unqualified borrowers.

Cheney says we should prepare for another attack… and he should know if one’s coming, right Dick? (sorry, tinfoil hat appeared from nowhere)

I don’t think the English language has a word yet that defines who or what Bush really is.

  38. nanlichi says:

We will never know the truth about why Boy George invaded Iraq. Was it because Sadam shot at his Daddy? Was it to prove that he was better than Dad? To do something for once in his life that people would remember?

We do know that long before he stole the Presidency he wanted to be remembered as a “War President”. He told his autobiographer that the Presidents that are remembered were those who lead the country into war. He wanted to pick on a weak country so he could kick ass and be remembered.

Well he got his wish, he will be remembered. Hated and reviled far past his death. Hell, I still remember Hitler.

  39. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

DRxJ Says: Bush…single handedly structured the Ohio State Buckeye’s unforeseen upset in the 2009 Big Ten Tournament

improve healthcare benefits for Insurance and Pharma Companies

conserve our environment- by polluting it more

increase military strength, pay, and benefits – for private contractors

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Bush let terrorists attack our Nation. And took unprecedented steps to create a dictatorship

What a diaper load. A “Library” has no business taking a position on anything. A “Library” is a place of learning. A “Library” is a place where people come for information and educate themselves.

Why doesn’t bush just spend the money on statues and billboards touting the “good things” he done.

  46. misshusseinmolly says:

And both the President and First Lady Clintons wrote about the Lewinsky issue in their biographies. Further, President Clinton came clean about his own personality flaws in this personal, non-political issue that should have been between him and his wife only.

Any chance Bush will recognize his own personality flaws that resulted in his governance failures? Elephants will fly first.

prompted by angels81 @ 41 , I’ll have a go at the logical progression of ignoring the Iraq invasion/occupation:

    Ignore Iraq and you ignore:
4500 US deaths, 30-thousand US wounded.
    Inadequate Veterans health care
Rapes and murders in the US army.
    Suicides of veterans.
    A hundred (?)reporters deaths
Up to 1 million Iraqi deaths, 2 million refugees.
    Pseudo-representative government for Iraqis (Freedom!)
    Abandonment of Iraqi translators.
    Ethnic cleansing.
    War crimes ( rape,murder, cluster bombs,phosphorus).
    Increased recruitment for Al Qaeda
$23 Billion directly wasted by corruption
$700 Billion in borrowed money wasted on the invasion/occupation
The interest due on $700 billion borrowed
The ideologically and profit-driven transfer of military resources from Afghanistan to Iraq.
Thus the deaths of US soldiers. allies and civilians in Afghanistan since its invasion in 2002.
The resurgence of the Taliban extremists in Afghanistan.
The failure to capture Bin Laden, due to outsourcing and under-resourcing, resulting in a new haven for violent extremists in Pakistan.

    Shall I continue…?

The battle against American fascism has just begun. Let us never forget, and never again grow complacent. If we can buy property close to the bush library to expose the truth, then we must do it. If we can vandalize the Bush library in protest, then we must do it. We have a duty to make sure that the future does not sugar coat what Corporatism has done and may yet do.

It’s a lot to write out but it should be The George W. Bush Library at Southern Methodist University. Always together.

Many folks that are associated with SMU are not pleased with this Propaganda Annex being placed on the campus. But a lot of folks who just see the “library” being discussed won’t necessarily know where it is.

SMU is totally in bed with ShrubCo and it needs to be reminded that the world is going to make that association also.

You’re kidding — right? You compare inappropriate sexual behavior to invading another country without provocation and justifying it with lies?

Most of us who are nostalgic for a balanced budget and for the debt clock FINALLY running backwards don’t consider Clinton’s sex life to be his “defining moment”. We do, however, recognize that being only the second president to be impeached (even though the motives were purely political) qualifies as historically significant. And because of its significance, it appears in Bill’s library.

Fast forward to a war based on lies. Sold to the American people by conflating Saddam Hussein with Osama bin Laden. Responsible for over 4,200 American deaths and the deaths of many thousands of Iraqis and the displacement of several times that number. The ignition of a civil war. The loss of respect from the rest of the world.

And you want to put this on a par with a BJ????

“No Mention Of Iraq In Bush’s Presidential Library Bio”

Bush’s bio is equivalent to missing ingredients to making a cake such as yeast, sugar, and eggs. Bush thought he had it all dialed in that the war in Iraq would be his legacy. Obviously, it didn’t pan out that way for the former clown President in the end since the war of terrorism took a back seat to the global economic crisis.

Bush can try to paint a rosy picture of his Presidential Library bio all he wants. Bottom line: Bush drove this country financially in a ditch and took this country into a war on false pretenses in which that country was never a threat to the U.S.

  67. Ape-Man says:

The Bush library should be scrapped and replaced with some sort of crypt, surrounded by thousands of little crosses. It should be devoted to the foolishness of the Bush doctrines. It should stand as a textbook reminder as how not to react when dealing with extremists.

  68. 5th Estate says:

Ignore Iraq and you ignore: continued….

The lies that put us in Iraq in the first place (and still keep us there).
The increase in global oil prices that depressed the economy as a result of the invasion and its aftermath.
The bankruptcy of the mass media that played its part
    Government sanctioned kidnapping and torture
The treasonous disclosure of Valerie Plame’s profesional identity.
The subversion of justice in the Plame/Wilson cover-up.
The illegal government propagandizing to the American public through the referencing of tax-payer funded ‘foreign’ media sources (set-up largely in Iraq).
Exploitation of the death of Pat Tillman and the capture and staged rescue of Jessica Lynch for expedient political gain.
    The suspension of habeas corpus.
The breaking of US law by refusing to abide by the Geneva conventions.
Spying on ALL communications, foreign and domestic
The use of police and other official resources to intimidate and prevent public dissent.
Unlawful harassment and imprisonment of peaceful dissenters.
Premature disclosure of classified ongoing allied foreign intelligence anti-terrorist operations for expedient domestic political gain.
The August 6th PDB “Bin Laden Determined to Attack In The United States” and at least 50 other warnings.
The dismissal of a dozen (or more) Arabic translators/intelligence a n a l y s t s that may otherwise have resulted in the mitigation of the events of September 11th when a date-specific affirmation of some kind of attack was translated a couple of days later, due to the sudden lack of translators dismissed solely because of their sexual orientation.
Thus the deaths of all the 9-11 victims that the Bush administration used as an excuse to invade Iraq in the first place.

    And thus the failure of Bush to uphold his oath of office;
“to defend the Constitution and the United States of America from all enemies, foreign and domestic”

Hmmm…ignoring Iraq requires ignoring almost every policy decision Bush ever made, doesn’t it?

Jesus. What some people will believe. We will never have a world free from terror. That is, unless you wipe out everyone in the Middle East, as a start, and then forever lock up everyone else who has even the hint of predisposition for violence — think Minority Report. For those left, you will need to put a chip under their skin and monitor their moves 24/7/365. You will need to ban all guns on the planet, and then anything else that can be used as a weapon. Throw in a little mind control (we aren’t born with violent tendencies…we are taught them) while you are at it. Don’t piss anybody off at work, don’t cut people off in traffic (oh wait…there won’t be any vehicles, which can be used as weapons), don’t look at someone’s wife or girlfriend the wrong way, and always pay the school bully your 5 cent milk money.

  78. 5th Estate says:

“President Bush took unprecedented steps to protect our homeland and create a world free from terror.”

Step 1: Ignore all warnings of a possible terrorist attack
Step 2: Quietly freak-out for 7 minutes. Change pants in limo on way to air-base.
Step 3: Run away on publicly owned private-jet
Step 4: Show up at the scene of the crime three days-late, disturb the crime scned and stand on the graves of the dead, bloviating
Step 5: Plan invasion of country of non-guilty party and destruction of Constitution and the Rule of Law
Step 6: Clear brush on fake ‘ranch’

    Unprecedented indeed! (See Clinton-WTC bombing-1993 and Roosevelt–Pearl Harbor–1941).

    Keith Says:

    1) I hear conservatives everyday say our economic problems were caused by increasing homeownership among minorities

    Keith,

You beat me to it, dude. I was about to comment on the same thing. This is why Bush didn’t make a serious push for tighter regulations regarding home ownership, because he could boast about the high rate of ownership while hoping the market wouldn’t tank before he left office. Since it did, it’s now conveniently Clinton’s fault. Another question is this: how many of those minority families he was responsible for putting into homes now face foreclosure?

    Dear Klatu,
I didn’t know receiving a ‘consensual’ blow-job defines your moral ethos.

What about usurping the Fourth, Fifth, Eighth and Ninth Amendments with sights on the Fist?

Either you were dropped on your head as a child, or you dropped your moral compass…
    … Care to parse it?

  82. wiley says:

Sheesh. What do most people think the word “history” means? Unless they are indicating that they think what Bush has done in office hasn’t come to fruition yet and “time will tell”, so to speak, then his presidency is history already. His library is a very selective archive of historical information. He really ought to just build a monument to himself—perhaps a large bronze statue of that “Mission Accomplished” moment with the cod-piece.

He’s playing at his legacy liked he played at being a war-president, yet the legacy plays down the war because he failed so miserably and Americans are finally starting to catch on to the illegality of the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

    Poor George.

  83. pastcaring says:

    I’m confused.

I thought we were supposed to thank George Bush, every day we are lucky to get up and breath, for ridding the world of Saddam Hussein.

Did he wish him away? Did Saddam magically vanish? I thought Bush made him toast?

Gosh Darn, by golly, I seem to remember Saddam swinging from a noose and Bush in cod=packing gear on a flight deck somewhere, something about Mission Accomplished.

Moon River, wider than a mile, I’m crossing you in style……

  84. barfly says:

    … increase homeownership, especially among minorities;

Trying to duck responsiblity for the war, by making note that his presidency was responsible for the mortgage meltdown?

    That’s George.

    Incompetent, in bold, new ways.

  85. wiley says:

On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked our Nation. When informed of this, the President continued to read My Pet Goat to a roomful of children.

  86. Wang111 says:

    Speaking of George W. Bush:

(No author listed). (2008, December 30). Iraq, Katrina were Bush’s downfall: former aides. http://www.cbc.ca/. Retrieved December 30, 2008, from http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/12/30/bush-oralhistory.html

George W. Bush’s racial discrimination against black people pursuant to Hurricane Katrina is definitely to be blamed and recognized as a factor contributing to his downfall.

In consideration of Bush’s lies that led to the illegitimate Iraq war: he knew or should have known that the American people would discover the lies.

Bush is like an idiot: he lied about the reasons for attacking Iraq with no particular plan as to how to conceal the lies.

The number of deaths is almost the same as when Clinton was in office, interesting – U.S. Military Deaths Since 1980 Bill Clinton (1993 – 2000) …………. 7,500 deaths George W. Bush (2001 – 2006) …. 8,989 deaths. Not to discount anything but a Marine is more likely to die at home driving then at war. Bush had my full support for the war… if you knew anything about the lunatic President in Iran who thinks his Messiah will return if he crushes the US you’d want the US military in that region of the world too.
