Fox News Edits Clip To Suggest That Biden Recently Declared ‘Fundamentals Of The Economy Are Strong’

This afternoon, Fox News’s Martha MacCallum introduced a segment highlighting Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Christina Romer’s claim yesterday that the “fundamentals of the economy are sound.” “After weeks of economic doom and gloom, the Obama administration is now singing a slightly different tune,” MacCallum said.

She then played clips of Romer and other administration officials making seemingly positive comments about the current state of the economy. One of the clips was of Vice President Biden saying, “The fundamentals of the economy are strong!” After the segment, MacCallum said, “All right, well the mantra for the weekend is clear, looking at what was said over the course of the shows on Sunday.” Watch it:

But the clip of Biden seemingly making a recent remark about the strength of the economy is grossly inaccurate. The Biden statement was actually from last September — during the presidential campaign — when he was quoting Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Here’s what Biden really said:

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that’s why John McCain could say with a straight face as recently as this morning and this is a quote, “the fundamentals of the economy are strong.” That’s what John said. He says that “We’ve made great progress economically in the Bush years.”

Watch it:

Apparently, dishonestly rewriting history is perfectly acceptable at Fox now.

This is about as blatantly dishonest as they can get. Really. Truly shameless, and so obvious that dishonesty is the only excuse for such. They deserve to face mobs with pitchforks and buckets of tar and feathers.

It’s acceptable globally now by all MSM. Fox is less clever, though, about hiding it.

I disagree. The intent is typical, but the execution is a step beyond what they usually try to pull. This is appallingly bad faith and a miserable excuse for even the level of journalism they pretend to practice.

Over the weekend I was engaged in a long, drawn out discussion with troll jay on this very subject, among others.

jay’s stated position was that any quoting of a comment without its surrounding text was “out of context”. I tried to explain that if someone quotes another accurately, without distorting the original meaning of the statement, that’s not only acceptable, it’s necessary for efficient communication.

It’s an “out of context” offense only when the original meaning of the statement is changed.

jay, if you’re reading… this example from Faux News is what I was talking about when i said “change the original meaning”.

On another note, people are really missing the boat on what Ms. Romer said. She said the “fundamentals of the economy are SOUND”, not the “fundamentals of the economy are strong”.

What I believe she meant is that the underpinnings of our economy are sound (once we whip the financial industry into shape). On the other hand McCain said they were “strong” meaning everything is just peachy.

This is a little too nuanced of a difference for most conservatives to take in, but it would be nice if the Progressives started pointing out the differences.

They have lots of money to study how to brainwash Americans who never learned to think for themselves. This is modern fascism and the battle has only just begun.

As for the FCC, what the hell are you lazy pukes doing anyway? Why hasn’t Fox News been taken off the air? What are we paying you for? What is the purpose of the FCC if not to make news programs actually produce news, and not propaganda.

Kicking Bush and the Republicans out of power was a good move to get America away from fascism, but we have a long way to go. If Bush wasn’t our Hitler, imagine what the future might hold. Be afraid, be very afraid.

I’m sure the nuances of the two words is a little more than your pea brain can take in, but there is a big difference. The last; “the fundamental strength of the economy is middle class workers,” isn’t even apropos. The Biden quote, out of context AND out of sequence, is clearly the hook they are hanging their false story on. This amounts to complete fabrication of “the news”. The scary part is that Fox News drones will eat this story whole and believe it as fact.

  58. ralph the wonder llama says:

Looking at a journalistic fraud of this magintude, it’s easy to forget that there are two sins being committed here.

The first, monumental one is that they are presenting a video of then-candidate Biden ridiculing an opponent for saying that “the fundamentals of the economy are strong”, but edited to make it appear that Biden is the one making that statement.

The second is easy to overlook — they’re playing a video from September 2008 and presenting it as current, as if it were said “over the course of the shows on Sunday”. TP notes this part of the fraud, but I think it’s easy to overlook.

  59. mk3872 says:

    March 16th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
    ____________

No, idiot. The fact that FOX deliberately distorted Biden’s campaign speech through selective editing does not give you license to put contradictory words in his mouth as a pathetic straw man attempt.

That said, I think the tone of optimism the Obama administration is taking lately is a bit premature, and rather wrong-headed. The plain fact is that the fundamentals of our economy are NOT strong, no matter how one tries to spin it. The average American worker is underpaid, overindebted, and often an illness or layoff away from financial ruin. Salaries have not kept up with our standard of living, our manufacturing base has been overrun by cheap imports, and our economy has been basically cruising from bubble to bubble for decades. And the claim that we have electronics is rather pointless given the lack of redundancy in our electrical grid. On top of that, the banking system looks like it will be constipated for a good long time.

The fundamentals of our economy are far worse off than Obama and his team are willing to say. Though I can understand their need to sound positive and not spark a bank run, I hope that they at least privately acknowledge how bleak it really is.

This was not a random insertion by Faux, either. they realized as they were assembling their clips, that they didn’t have a real strong story.

“American workers are sound, we have a good capital stock…”

“Does seem to be some stability in January and February, which is better than if that were not the case…”

“The core strength of the economy is middle-class workers”

Without Joe Biden, it doesn’t really sound like much, does it? Certainly not enough on which to hang an “Obama flip-flop on the economy story”.

But with that dishonest Biden clip in there, suddenly the last clip’s “core strength” resonates and begins to sound like a refrain. Ta-daa! Faux has itself an Obama-bashing story!

The real irony here is that the economy IS improving, and much more rapidly than anyone predicted thanks to President Obama’s stimulus approach. As opposed to Bush’s “smash and grab” approach.

The DOW has climbed upward for 5 straight days. That’s something that does not happen in a recession. One or two day, sure. But 5 in a row? Also banks are starting to stabilize and credit is starting to loosen up, just like the President said in his State of the Union speech.

According to the wikipedia the RTNDA is in charge of the journalistic code of ethics. Unfortunately, they don’t have the authority to remove Fox News from cable, even if Fox blatantly disregards all of the RTNDA’s ethics guidelines.

There is also The Society of Professional Journalists which has had a journalistic code of ethics since 1909. I thought, since I am a dumbass, I would take a moment to quote from it regarding accountability….

    Be Accountable
Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other.

    Journalists should:

    — Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.
    — Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.
    — Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
    — Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.
    — Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.

Unfortunately The Society of Professional Journalists also does not have the authority to remove Fox News from the air, which is what is so desperately needed. At least it is good to know that Fox News does not live up the standards of professional journalism.

I am a dumbass, so I don’t know if there is any specific organization that has the authority to remove a propaganda news program from the cable, but it is fairly obvious that Fox News is not following the guidelines of journalistic integrity, and we the people are going to do something about it. Boy are we dumbasses!

    Archie B Says:
“Things are not as bad as we thought they were!” nobama

Kinda goes hand in hand with what biden said, no?

Except, Archie, that Vice-President Biden did not say what you and Faux News claim he said. He quoted John McCain.

And as for your President, perhaps this is the quote you seem fond of paraprasing?

“I don’t think things are ever as good as they say, or ever as bad as they say,” Obama added. “Things two years ago were not as good as we thought because there were a lot of underlying weaknesses in the economy. They’re not as bad as we think they are now.”

President Obama is not saying (as your inaccurate paraphrase seems to suggest) that he overestimated the amount of damage former President Bush did to the economy. He is saying — and I know this may be a little too subtle for your simpistic mind to grasp, so bear with me — that the media has a tendency to exaggerate both the highs and lows, and it’s important for those in leadership positions to maintain realistic views of every situation.

    Clear?

    Good.

Now let’s get back to the topic.

Archie, do you think it was proper or ethical for Faux news to misrepresent the Vice-President in this way, in order to build a story?

    ralph the wonder llama Says

Would it be safe to say you are taking tp’s word as gospel and haven’t done any research yourself?

No it would not be safe.

Why? Have you turned up evidence that the clip identified as having appeared on Faux News is a fake?

    What else could excuse this?

  161. joe cantwell says:

    sorry bibbie,

    try again.

    :)

  162. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Habib Says:
Think Progress claims that Jarrett “refuses to talk about” the war: false. They say Fox deemed Edwards “worthy of more coverage” than the war: a blatant lie. In truth, during the very program Think Progress chose to focus on, no story got “more coverage” than the Georgian war did!

And is that where the story ended?

Did TP provide for a response from the offended journalist?

  163. ralph the wonder llama says:

how’s the rest of list coming?

    you promised a list.

    (with doctored videos)

    what else ya got?

    :)

  166. belac says:

Habib- when that was the topic… ages ago, I believe TP was discussing a particular host’s redirection of a guest’s statement that polls showed Americans didn’t want to hear about Edwards affair but instead wanted the candidate’s to respond to what was happening in Georgia… A statement that made such an impact on the host that his very next statement was something like, ‘right, getting back to Edward’s affair…’

How is TP’s headline a lie? They didn’t say ‘Fox never discusses Georgian War.’ did they? They said, “Fox News Host Refuses To Talk About Russia-Georgia War, Insists On Covering Edwards’ Affair”

And what do you think of Fox’s misrepresentation of what Biden was saying?

  167. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Habib Says:

Wht do you base your facts on if not the word of tp?

Just for giggles I read the first ten posts here and the last ten. Trolls are really good at misdirection. I think it comes from not having any idea of where they are going in the first place.

  172. belac says:

Wht do you base your facts on if not the word of tp?

Can you not watch both video’s posted? Did the snippet in the first video get to the core of what Biden was saying in the second video? And can a video from a campaign speech last September really be called a ‘clip from [a] recent interview’ as the host does?

Or is that dishonest and intentionally misleading?

  173. joe cantwell says:

    bib,

more hard hitting, damning evidence here:

“Think Progress is one of the most Pro-Jihadi Blogs around. They have openly supported Iran, Hamas, The Mehdi Army, Hizballah and Al Qaeda in the past. 176. belac says:

  186. ralph the wonder llama says:

Look, Habib, I recognize that this video could have been faked pretty easily. I just don’t know what’s in it for TP if they faked something like this. If this were to be proved to be a fraud, I don’t now if I’d ever come back to TP for anything. Their credibility would be shot (with faux, of course, that’s not a problem).

But there are a number of other sites now reporting the same thing. Some of them link back to TP, but many of them see to have reported it independently.

So if you have evidence that this video is faked, Habib, bring it on dude.

Its the defense of a 4 year old. Tell them the sky’s blue they say “prove it”. Tell them 2+2 equals 4 they say “prove it”. Its a juvenile approach from a party that has no more arguments. No more answers.

Johnny Dollar tries to debunk Think Progress’ FNC Photoshop theory regarding Jeff Zucker and The Factor. Dollar makes a convincing case if you look at it at face value. However ICN never takes ANYTHING at face value and I busted out Photoshop. The results are interesting…but more importantly conclusive…Zucker was Photoshopped and Dollar owes Think Progress an apology

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You keep saying Erbe was brought on to talk about Edwards but she dismissed it as water cooler talk. That is the claim Jarret made but apparantly that wasnt clear to Erbe who is a NEWS ANALYST for PBS. I assume you base that on the part of the thread that TP put up allowing Jarret to make his case. Further evidence that TP was NOT being dishonest, in the way YOU are being either dishonest or astonishingly stupid. It looks like Erbe wasnt convinced she was only there to talk about Edwards. YOU can take Jarrets word for that. I am not convinced. No matter even IF it were true. TPs thread was accurate and they allowed Jarret to make his case. No dishonesty except YOUR YOU INSUFFERABLE MORON.

  210. pete says:

Ah yes. Nothing like a story about FAUX getting caught lying to bring out the trolls. However, I’m left with a question.

Why do the FAUX liars, with 24 hours a day to defend their positions, need a bunch of trolls to defend them? It’s as effing stupid as God needing money or Jebus needing a bunch of brain-dead freaks to “fight for him”.

Seriously, stupid trolls, you’re impassioned defense makes them look all the more guilty. If your heroes are all they claim? They don’t need the defense of a bunch of inbred hicks.

  211. tombaker says:

Knowing as much as you do about it is a warning sign, Habib. You’re either wastefully under-employed or pathologically obsessed.

  212. belac says:

Although ICN tries to concoct an explanation that would absolve TP, they basically concede our main point–that Think Progress used an image that was excessively squeezed.

    ICN responds:

The key is his glasses on the left side jut out past his face. If this was a chroma key issue, they likely would have dissapeared with his ear. If it was sloppy editing, why did the ear dissapear but not his glasses when his glasses also came past his face? (in reality it’s not sloppy editing because FNC’s graphics department was probably using hi-res versions of the image…so accidentally lopping off an ear is basically an impossibility…they’d have to be total morons over there to do that. I’ve seen and met their graphics people in action and they’re definitely not morons.) And this doesn’t account for the vertical skewing of the overlayed images where the lower part of the image matches 1:1 but the upper part does not. Incidentally, the vertical skewing in overlayed images can’t be accounted for by a discrepency in video feeds like the Think Progress grab – a question Dollar raised to me by email – because if that were the case we shouldn’t have 1:1 matching anywhere in the overlayed image…either horizontally or vertically.

    Again- old hat.

    Ready to discuss today’s topic?

  213. ralph the wonder llama says:

    good points pete.

I was about to ask another question, which was why the current generation of trolls insist on copy-and-pasting chunks of text from other sites without either attribution or a link (which could be seen as plagiarism).

But I guess we see why they don’t post links — when they do, the links prove them wrong.

Inside Cable News takes on our analysis with one of their own. They chalk up the excessive skinniness of the Think Progress screen grab to variations among cable providers, which doesn’t explain why this one Think Progress screengrab shows a distortion not present in any of their others. Or what cable provider would broadcast such obviously squeezed images. Although ICN tries to concoct an explanation that would absolve TP, they basically concede our main point–that Think Progress used an image that was excessively squeezed.

    … Who’s the prick?
    Is that all you’ve got?

If it wasn’t for your trollishness, this post would have not achieved it’s numerous posts.

GOPhater flagged for attempting to incite illegal and violent actions.

  246. dbadass says:

Aren’t Habib and Archie B cut from the same jib so to speak?

  247. ralph the wonder llama says:

That seems to be the consensus of opinion, dbadass.

by the way, thanks for your help this afternoon. Habib was a fighter but, y’know, when we finally landed him, he just kind of dissolved in a little puddle on the deck.

Smelled a little like cat urine, if you ask me.

  248. dbadass says:

Dogfish pass their urine across the skin…

  249. ralph the wonder llama says:

Are you suggesting habib = watchpup?

  250. Jack Mehoff says:

I can’t help but think the honchos at faux were trying to prod their viewers into thinking, “Hey, so THAT’S who made that dumb-a$$ remark! I KNEW it!! I’ve been trying to remember who said that! Figures! Stupid DEMOCRAT party!

  251. labman57 says:

FOX News adheres to the philosophy common among right-wing extremists. It really doesn’t matter whether a story or statement is factually accurate; what matters is whether or not they can SELL it.

Thank you so much, Think Progress!! You have presented documented, side-by-side video examples of the journalistic ethics that Faux News continually violates. I plan to show these two clips to my right-wing, Faux News-watching brother to prove they are nothing but a jingoistic propaganda machine for corporate interests and the right wing. If this isn’t evidence to show him that Faux doesn’t present true facts, I don’t know what is. My only worry is that the bro will be as brainwashed as Habib and willfully ignore the facts in front of his two eyes.
Happy St. Paddy’s to all TP readers and posters …

  254. Webspin says:

The left knows no limits. Fox inadvertantly hired a lieing liberal mole intern that knew full well that millions of viewers as well as Bidden himself would cry foul at this. The whole intent was to discredit FOX. That so many on the left feel for it with gusto shows just how shallow their thinking skills are.

  255. ralph the wonder llama says:

We look forward to the documentation of your evidence for this charge, Webspin.

You obviously have some inside info. Do you know the name of this “lieing (sic) liberal mole intern”?

Do you have the name of the person who hired him?

Can you explain what you meant when you typed “so many on the left feel for it with gusto”?

Thanks. I look forward to a vigorous debate with you on this and many topics, as you seem to have very deep thinking skills — only those with deep thinking skills would feel comfortable criticizing others for having shallow ones, right?

  256. ralph the wonder llama says:

Seriously, Webspin. If you know which “lieing (sic) liberal mole intern” is responsible for this embarrassing Faux-pas, I’d like to know.

I am totally against leveling unfounded charges at people or institutions. If Faux News is blameless in this, I want to know.

Huh? Oh man… is this what you’ve been reduced to, Habib?
    Excellent.

  258. Smarte64 says:

As I read, I couldn’t help but laugh. Laugh real hard at the comments that are being made. Maybe I overlooked it, if I did I’m sorry, but not one person is saying what is really going on here. Do you think for one moment Fox cares about anything on this blog? LOL, heck no, Fox News wants ratings and you idiots are giving it to them. Everyone one is watching what Fox is saying becuase they want to offer an opinion. Your watching and their rating are increasing. Chew on that for a while…

Awww look at the libs playing yet another game of ‘Gotcha’. It’s nice to know that even though so many of you (all of you?) hate Fox News sooooooooooooo much, you STILL watch it! Oh and hey, can we conservatives play this game of ‘gotcha’ too? Or is it strictly a liberal thing?

  265. neo-con says:

Can someone explain why this is different than want the MSM or White House tried to do to Rush with their creative edits? Liberals scream really loud when their tricks are used on them!
