Gibbs calls Cheney ‘the next most popular member of the Republican cabal’ after Limbaugh.

Yesterday on CNN, former Vice President Cheney said Obama was making Americans less safe. Today, when CNN’s Ed Henry asked Press Secretary Robert Gibbs for his reaction to Cheney’s criticisms, Gibbs said that CNN invited Cheney because “Rush Limbaugh was busy,” and called Cheney “the next most popular member of the Republican cabal.” Addressing Cheney’s critique, Gibbs pointed out that under Obama, terrorist suspects “would finally be brought to justice,” unlike under Cheney’s regime:

I think the American people will, in this administration, see those actors brought to the swift and certain justice that was not brought to them in the previous administration.

Watch it:

Henry also asked for Gibbs’ reaction to Cheney’s criticisms of Obama’s handling of the economic crisis. “I think not taking economic advice from Dick Cheney would be maybe the best possible outcome of yesterday’s interview,” Gibbs said.

Update Yglesias notes that Rick Klein objects to Gibb's tone. "The way I look at it, the idea of respectful debate has no real meaning unless you actually deny respect to someone," Yglesias writes. "Cheney seems like a good candidate."

Gibbs is just being honest and frank. That’s his job. The only ones being coy are the MSM, and the only ones they are fooling now are the 23 percenters. The MSM ’see no evil’ game is over for the vast majority. Thanks Mr. Gibbs!

  4. WAYNEBRO says:

Yea, but those aren’t the “actors” I’d like to see brought to swift and certain justice.

  5. And Yet... says:

Refreshing to listen to Gibbs’ directness, calling Cheney & Rushbo members of the Repub cabal. More of that, plz.

Why in hell are we subjected to CNN interviews with “the former VP” at all at this point? At least GWB is pretty much keeping his mouth shut since he left office. Darth needs to do the same. You’re not being supportive of our President in a time of war there, Dick- isn’t that what the Repub cabal was always shrieking about during the Bush years?

    – - In the Internetty Spherical Blogos we can rip the Right all we want. But for Gibbs to do it at a podium with the White House seal behind him is at best petty and serves no useful purpose.

    Move on, Mr. Gibbs….

    – - No, Gibbs’ job is top speak on behalf of President Obama. Would Obama be that snarky? Biden did it with Justice Roberts and Obama chastised him. This is childish of Gibbs and demeans the President.

Wow. When the former vice president speaks in the most derogatory terms of the current administration, Archie B. has no problem.

    Yeah..but Badmoodman,

Cheney as much as Accused Obama of Not protecting the country.

    Pretty strong accusation.

I’d say Mr. Gibbs was just firing a warning shot across Cheney’S Bow. He’s letting the GOP Know that two can play that game.

  15. paleolib says:

Cheney’s vitriolic public attacks represent a substantial breach of decorum which calls for the outgoing administration to leave the stage for a suitable period of time, usually a year, for the new administration to settle in. Bush to his credit has done so. The Dick not so much. I have no problem with Gibbs going on the attack, especially when CNN gives The Dick free reign by sending one of its Freepers to lob softball questions. Answering the charges of the former vice president is one of the things a press secretary is supposed to do — or do you really want to go back to the days when Dems just stood there and took it assuming the voters would reward them for their tact and diplomacy?

    Anybody hear about this???

Investigative journalist Sy Hersh dropped a bombshell revelation on Monday about international killings ordered under Bush.

At a “Great Conversations” event at the University of Minnesota [Monday] legendary investigative reporter Seymour Hersh may have made a little more news than he intended by talking about new alleged instances of domestic spying by the CIA, and about an ongoing covert military operation that he called an “executive assassination ring.”

…the Joint Special Operations Command — JSOC it’s called. It is a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently. They do not report to anybody, except in the Bush-Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. They did not report to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff or to Mr. [Robert] Gates, the secretary of defense. They reported directly to him. …

    Go Get’em Seymour

    7 Badmoodman Says:

for Gibbs to do it at a podium with the White House seal behind him is at best petty and serves no useful purpose.

I can think of several useful purposes just off the top of my head. It sure made a lot of progressives happy. I bet Obama and the Democrats gain a point or two in popularity just because he said what progressives want him to say.

It could also be an indicator that justice will be coming for Cheney too. That might be reading a bit to much into it, but it would be useful to punish a publicly confessed war criminal, especially if you want to have the trial going on when it’s time to elections.

  40. tombaker says:

I see where Gibbs left room for some critique,

    BUT

There’s still a lot of box to build, to make sure R’s don’t ooze back into polite society. Gibbs’ press-fencing is a good reminder that some of us are not going to give equal airing to pure garbage, and it maintains and adds to a very necessary box.

Righties thought they had populist anti-media folks all to themselves. They were wrong. Team Obama is harnessing everyone’s ambivalence toward infotainment, irreality programming, and shock-jocking, and leveraging it to their advantage.

    Brilliant.

  41. Levi the Oracle says:

Does “punk” mean to hurl silly insulting comments then run away? If so, that is not surprising. All there posts were within from 4:25pm through 4:31pm. “Who knows, these trolls could be paid to troll dozens of sites a day, trying to spread the fascism”

Something is driving them to it, and it isn’t logic, and it isn’t legitimate concern for the nation, or they could and would discuss such concerns. Are they poor loosers, or is it something they are unwilling to reveal, like personal gain, greed, deep seated fear, or hate. Maybe they just invested so much emotional baggage in BushedCo that they can’t let go. I guess each troll has it’s story…

  45. Patty says:

    To Nettles at 5:33 p.m.:

Rather than thinking that Limbaugh has gotten in the president’s head, I believe the president is rightly holding up a mirror for the Republicans to view themselves — with Rush’s lovely image blocking out the rest of the GOP crowd.

  46. livelongandprosper says:

Nettles, who IS the face of the Republican party?

  47. Marie says:

Gibbs is fighting back from the podium – were he not doing so, we would demand he be fired.
Gibbs is representing Democrats and liberals as well as the President – go Gibbs!!

Remember some of the threats we heard from Ari when he was there? Gibbs isn’t threatening anyone, he is merely making use of sarcasm.

  48. livelongandprosper says:

    Marie, Republicans don’t get sarcasm.

  49. Bobwurst says:

John King, whose adoration for Dick Cheney knows no bounds, asked and received this interview — he used a rightwing rag (HumanEvents) headline to ask one of his more inflammatory and leading questions of Cheney.

  52. dasm says:

Gibbs is likely quite correct- Republicans continue to prove they worship/listen to liars, smearers, hate-mongers, war-mongers, and bigots. Limbaugh & Cheney are certainly right at the top of that list.

  53. And Yet... says:

Will do, Marie @ 58. Already made a couple calls, too.

    Enough of this.

  54. Ape-Man says:

“This dude Gibbs just can’t stop yappin about Rush Limbaugh”

Journalists get to ask the questions. A journalist made the mistake of asking Mr. Gibbs to comment about other comments mummbled by cheney on a republican TV show. Gibbs was drawing a comparison between Limba and Cheney that they are both full of hot air, and for now they both represent the face of the republicans.

  55. wiley says:

Since Cheney was carrying on that there would be a terrorist attack (blah, blah, blah) due to Obama’s policies, I think Gibbs was right to blow off the messenger. Cheney is not in a position to be commenting on the national security as if he were in the loop—he’s a has been.

I can’t recall any time that the former Prez or V.P. went on news shows and criticized the new administration before 6 months had passed. This continual line of crap coming from little Dick just shows the total lack of class and respect Bushco has for this country. I would love to see some kissass in the news pool ask Gibbs’ opinion of the latest Cheney colon output and have Gibbs respond by asking, “just what position does Cheney hold in this administration? And, why should anybody bother to care about his gaseous emissions?” THAT would be something for the news shows to report!

    **************************************************************

Fair question, LL &P. Personally I defer to voices like McCain, but i’m in the minority.

It’s probably smart politics to demonize Limbaugh, Coulter, Savage, etc. but in the end, those people are just entertainers, no different than Bill Maher or Jon Stewart. My point was I thought that Obama was supposed to be above all of this.

I understand who the entertainers are, but I don’t think your party does. Keynote address by Rush? Don’t dare speak ill of Rush if your republican or face making a public apology? You may defer to McCain (whole other topic), but it seems the bottom of Republican spectrum (Rush’s listeners) and the top (Steele, CPAC et al) are deferring to Rush!

Obama has shown that he is above all this type of crap. Gibb’s answered a question and I wouldn’t doubt that Obama will talk to him about his response.

Ape-Man, your question about what drives trolls is a good one. I often wonder in all seriousness what kind of person would sit here and invite abuse day-in and day-out. It would make a good subject for some graduate student’s thesis.

I think that they are little persons, insecure in their view of the world and desperate for an authority figure. They feel like their defense of their leaders will be noticed someday. Like the zit-faced sycophants who fawn over the high school jocks.

  65. livelongandprosper says:

    Nettles Says:

    LL&P:
Personally, I believe the Republican party platform to be way too ambitious. As the platform currently stands, there are way too many social issues that one must conform to be considered wholly conservative. Me? I’m a Republican who’s anti 2nd amendment, pro stem cell, pro gay rights, but im also anti-union, anti-big government. The true conservatives have no place for a voice like me. they can float out one African American man after the next and call him the Party Chairman and it still won’t make the party any more inclusive.

I definitely would call myself liberal but I’m for small government. But then defining small or large government becomes a Con-Lib argument. The Republican party as it stands does have a long way to go to be considered inclusive – by my standards anyway.

So, Nettles, it comes down to being put into a slot – Conservative or Liberal. Politically those are the only choices. The reality is that two choices does not give a good representation of the peoples views.

I like to have politicians behave with integrity and accountability. I will call out any that don’t show these values. I guess I don’t like many then. LOL The last administration showed very little integrity and accountability and so far, this new one is doing better. I don’t expect President Obama himself to participate in this entertainer/politician crap and he has shown that he won’t. I do expect President Obama to put the brakes on his people doing too much of that as well. We will see. I really do wish more people in the MSM would tell Cheney to STFU.

    Have a great evening Nettles.

Cheney on Rush, Rush giving marching orders to senior Republican senitors (and they jump to his voice). I can see how this joke is too irrestible for Gibbs to pass up.
It does bring home the point that these clowns were watching the store for eight years, and that is not much of a joke.
Chaney in a love fest with Rush, I wondered if Rush was smittened!!!

  71. Wang111 says:

    Speaking of Cheney:

Cheney attended Yale University, but he flunked out. Cheney was twice prosecuted for and convicted of drunk driving. Cheney lied to former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey about the grounds for going to war in Iraq. Cheney is a pathological liar. Cheney is incompetent. Cheney would like to think that he is above the law. However, Cheney must pay for crimes against the United States and the world.

Maybe God is judging and punishing Cheney in afflicting Cheney with further heart problems in the here and now (15 October 2008) notwithstanding God’s fiery judgment against Cheney in the afterlife.

Maybe God is also judging and punishing Cheney in having placed Cheney in a wheelchair for whatever period of time.
