In e-mail blast, Ingraham calls Meghan McCain a ‘useful idiot.’

In an e-mail message today titled “useful idiot watch,” right-wing talker Laura Ingraham sends a “Memo to Meghan McCain,” claiming that her “plus-sized” attack was just “one satirical line” that the left is now using “to malign outspoken conservatives.” Ingraham claims that “indignation” over her “off-the-cuff remark” is “manufactured and totally phony“:

ingraham1.jpgThe left’s indignation in this instance is manufactured and totally phony. If any off-the-cuff remark about a woman’s size was condemnable, then where was the outrage when President Obama made a passing reference to Jessica Simpson’s “weight battle” during his Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer? And of course they look the other way when obvious personal attacks are levied against conservatives. Remember when Al Franken was the toast of all media for his book “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot”? Last month The View’s Joy Behar called him a “fat guy”; and when I was a guest on The View a few years back she ridiculed Ann Coulter and me as “peroxide” blondes on Fox. I laughed it off. If you can’t stand the heat…get out of the punditry business.

In a nod to ThinkProgress, Ingraham closes her e-mail by encouraging her readers to “click here to listen to the entire segment from March 13th, instead of the version that was edited and sent around by left wing smearmongers.”

    __________

Huh? Are these mindless, chattering idiots ever responsible for anything they do or say? This is getting hysterically funny. The wingnutters are turning on each other w/ an increasingly rabid ferocity… and yet ,somehow… it’s…

    All The Liberals’ Fault™…!!!

    Just… amazing… and incredibly entertaining.

You go, Laura!!! At least 23% of the country will follow you and Rush and OBillo right thru the Gates of Hell!!!

  5. Lora says:

And Laura Ingraham is a USELESS idiot, plain and simple.

  6. mk3872 says:

Well, she can keep trying, but there really is no defending yourself when you have no class and no substance.

When anyone who doesn’t endlessly repeat talking points from your ideoligical perspective, just telling them to shut up or calling them names is not debate. It just shows that you are indefensible.

Laura is another out of control republican heading for that cliff. Watch her put the pedal to the metal.

  9. ralph the wonder llama says:

Uh… correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t much of the criticism directed at the fact that Laura’s “plus-sized” line had nothing whatsoever to do with what Meghan McCain had said? that it was simply a gratuitous personal insult, juvenile and classless?

Isn’t that a valid criticism of a pundit?

  10. watchout5 says:

This entire thing is stupid, it doesn’t provide anything but entertainment. You need to stop covering this shit, this is what’s wrong with the TV box, this is why we need the internet to transcend this.

  11. dbadass says:

    transcend entertainment?

  12. tombaker says:

This is the most attention Laura’s gotten in a long time. Bet she feels special.

    (i think the whole thing’s a put-on)

Laura owes Meghan a little thank you note for raising her profile for a week.

Meghan probably owes Sarah P. a similar note, come to think of it.

    “Next week, on Bad Girls….”

Wrong – Ingraham is such a phony and superficial byatch. She couldn’t come up with anything significant or mature to say. The only thing Ingraham and Coulter can do is attack and offer zero solutions. They’re both useless.

  14. threeandfourquarters says:

Someone help me out here… is Laura saying that personal attacks based on appearance are totally cool?

“Cause if so, I’m down with that.

  18. Nevar says:

That was just for entertainment purposes.

  19. threeandfourquarters says:

She’s Ann Coulter without the “yeeeeeeeeeessssss!” they’re all alike the white wretched right wing hags. Hateful and mean spirited with nothing to contribute but rage and dysfunction.

  20. Vincennes says:

Hmmm…Laura says something degrading about Meghan. Meghan fires back. Laura says it’s the Left’s fault.

Cheney says the economy isn’t Bush’s fault. Many GOP blame Clinton. Also 9/11 happens on Bush’s watch, but still Clinton’s fault, GOP says.

GOP/media now saying Obama owns economy and apparently it’ll be his fault if he doesn’t fix it.

Apparently the GOP are blameless for everything wrong that has ever happened under the sun.

So how does mass delusion work? There’s a book in here somewhere.

  21. ralph the wonder llama says:

I think you’ve identified a pattern, Vincennes. I suggest studying it further.

  23. ralph the wonder llama says:

where was the outrage when President Obama made a passing reference to Jessica Simpson’s “weight battle” during his Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer?

I don’t recall the remark, but is a “passing reference to a weight battle” the equivalent of a persona; attack making fun of someone’s weight?

Dayum, those wingnuts love them some flexible moral equivalencies, don’t they?

  24. misshusseinmolly says:

Get over it, Laura. You’re just not that important. Meghan wasn’t personally offended by your classless remark as much as she condemned you using an irrelevant weight slam to make your point (did you really have nothing better to criticize?). And Meghan even explained why, but you were probably too busy wallowing in self-righteous indignation to listen.

We live in a society where women are taught to hate their bodies. The body must always be thinner, the boobs must always be bigger — we are taught to find imperfections and obsess over them. Anorexia and bulimia are killing our young women as they strive for an impossible ideal. And here you are — the most effective way you can cut another woman off at the knees is to make a slam about her weight.

Meghan looks perfectly fine the way she is. But you should be ashamed of yourself for perpetuating one of the most toxic aspects of our culture — the idea that a person’s worth (especially a woman) rests in her size.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, I was never a fan of Al Franken’s book title. Yes, Rush is fat, but that’s not what makes him a loathsome person.

  25. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Spot on, as usual missmolly.

I find the contemporary “ideal” ridiculous, myself. Big breasts and small butts just don’t occur naturally together.

Al Franken’s book title, I believe was originally supposed to be “Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Liar” which is arguably more defensible as a funny title, since “big fat liar” is a familiar childhood phrase (and was used as the title of a decent little Frankie Munoz movie), and rather funny when applied to a more-or-less grownup human. The fact that Rush is and always has been fat complicates the joke, admittedly. But Al Franken IS a comedian by trade (or is, at least, until he takes his seat in the US Senate).

  26. tbone says:

I don’t know about coordinated mass delusion. That might require more planning and organization than these morons appear capable of.

At least for me, their strategy is quite effective at sapping my energy. With the constant deluge of stupidity, I barely can muster the strength to laugh, cry, protest, or otherwise respond to the inanity. Any more of this, and I may succumb to nonsense overload.

  27. jdanman says:

    Ingraham’s a skank, I wouldn’t touch her with rushs’.

  28. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Well said, misshusseinmolly.

  34. Max-1 says:

    .

    What?!?!?!
Does Laura Ingrate not have a substantive thing to say that she has to resort to personal slams?

    .

  35. Austin says:

And in defense of Franken’s book, which I read and “useless idiot” obviously did not, the insult on the cover of the book is a retort to the fact that Limbaugh made fun of Chelsea Clinton, then an awkward teenager, by calling her a dog on his national radio show. Al was making a point, rather than making a pointless person attack on another person’s appearance. Laura really is as dumb as she seems.

  36. Max-1 says:

    .

    Laura Ingrate Said:

The left’s indignation in this instance is manufactured and totally phony.

So, Meghan’s indignation concerning your comment about her weight means she’s on the left? Or is it that you mean she’s a phony?

    .

  39. manbrake66 says:

Laura Ingrahm is a shill. I live here in Phx,Az surrounded by conservative talk radio and I listen to her just to hear her spew her nonsense(what does that say about me? LOL)

She never has anything really insightful to say..never.When it comes to topics that she cannot comment on she will just say…”how disturbing”.or “how tedious”

Some of her other lovely descriptions for those who do not believe in the way she does..

Matt Lauer..”Hair in a can Matt”

    Michael Moore..”Two dinners Moore”

    Howard Dean..”Deankey”

Clever eh?? And her two assistants who come across like Heckyl and Jeckyl are as nasty as she is.

And one of her truly amazing statements was the fact that she thought The Daily Show with Jon Stewart wasn’t funny.

Yet “Matt hair in a can” is..

And her book “Shut up and sing” who the hell does she think she is? She worked for Clarence Thomas..so she feels that what she says is more pertinent than what Barbara Streisand has to say?? Her being a lawyer makes her more keen to what is going on in the political landscape…and pop culture where she comentates daily on the subject

Someone from the left should write a book entitled . “Shut up and just litigate”

You think a woman who survived breast cancer and has recently converted to catholicism would show her fellow man a little respect and love.

I don’t recall the remark, but is a “passing reference to a weight battle” the equivalent of a persona; attack making fun of someone’s weight?

I remember the incident, and it contributes to Laura’s disingenuous-ness. Obama was stripped out of his own family cover-photo on the cover of an ‘Us-Weekly’ magazine in order to include an inset shot of Jessica Simpson with the title, “Inside Jess’ Weight Battle.”

After being kidded about the edit, (Lauer having compared the before-and-after edited photo,) Obama simply repeated the magazine tagline as an understatement regarding editing out the President of the United States.

LAUER: But I wanna show you the cover. Look what they did. They — they took you off the cover.

    OBAMA: Yeah.

LAUER: They took you out of it.

    OBAMA: It — it’s — it’s a little hurtful.

LAUER: You got replaced by Jessica Simpson.

OBAMA: Yeah, who’s losing a weight battle apparently. (LAUGHTER) Yeah. Oh, well.

Laura is a scumbag liar who’s trying to cover her hypocritical gaffe by blaming Obama and liberals.

Seems the bigger the republican guilt, the more liberal cabals were involved….

Clearly, it is essential for these talk show hosts to re-affirm their “street cred” with their audiences by intentionally butting their heads against the boundaries of social decorum. Then, if there is any response, their audience rallies to the flag to defend their martyred hero.

  45. Max-1 says:

    O.K. seriously,
Here Meghan was on a political talk show the other day attempting to contribute to a lively discussion. Albeit, she lacks credibility on many topics due to experience, yet she was treated by her host as if her opinion mattered.

Now, here we have Laura Ingrate throwing knives and sharpening her claws and attempting to draw blood from Ms. McCain. Is she jealous or something? I mean, every time I hear people resort to slamming someones persona, it usually is driven by an inner diva dying for attention.

… And the only attention Laura Ingrate should be getting currently, is a line of women throwing their heels at her!

Ingraham is pathetic, losing a fight with Meghan McCain. Losing badly. Meghan seems like a nice enough young woman (not that bright and her politics are silly, but she is John’s daughter) and is correct not to be ashamed of her weight (it’s not like she’s even fat, but I guess being over 95 pounds is fat to the anorexics like Ingraham and Coulter).

It is funny (and fun) to see the GOP eat their own with these petty 4th grade fights. At this rate, by 2012 the Whigs will have a better chance to get elected

  53. hanshiro says:

What I find gratifying about all the GOP infighting (and, I suspect the reason TP posts so much of it,) is that it showcases republicans’ inbred/innate and consistent childishness, particularly when any real world pressure is applied.

As one motivational speaker once posited, ‘When you put pressure on an orange, what comes out is what’s inside: orange juice.”

When you put pressure on a republican, what comes out is what’s inside: bile.

For all of the hero worship of the past election cycle on the part of the liberal media and the talk of “hope and change”, there is scant little of it.

Pelosi is acting just like her GOP predecessors in her running of the House. Obama is just as inflexible and arrogant as Bush. That is not the worst part though. Both parties are responsible for the mess we are in right now. The Community Reinvestment Act concerned itself with correcting the abuses of banks in the practice known as red-lining. While this liberal law was well-intentioned it created the environment that gave birth to the subprime mortgage debacle. Bush and the Republicans took advantage of this insanity to keep the economy operating on the fumes of imaginary equity because the stimulative effects of the tax cuts had passed. The Dems took full advantage of this horrible notion to further the possibility of their socialist ideal: everyone owning a home. Private property only has worth stemming from exclusivity of said right. Moreover, homes or anything else only have value based upon on the laws of supply and demand. Everyone can’t have everything or nothing has value. That is a linchpin principle of capitalism.

The subprime mortgae mess is a textbook example of why we need a third party in this country. The right too often appears to obsessed with concentrating wealth and ignoring the plight of the truly disadvantaged. The left lives in a space that sees the world through the eyes of class warfare and identity politics. The Democratic Party has never quite thrown on off the Marxist view of society and it shows in how they govern. Obama is a prime example of a liberal who passed the halls of academia and is ensconced in all the nonsense that holds sway there. All the liberal university wackos think they have helped elect the Messiah. He is going to right all the wrongs of history and make all the corporate evildoers pay. He is going to bring peace and love and total happiness to everyone everywhere. And if you disagree you aren’t allowed to speak.

Same people who railed against the Bush administration for trying to quash dissent now act as if you are insulting God if you dare not agree with BHO. At the least you must be a racist. And all of a sudden liberals have respect for the office of president. John King interviewed Dick Cheney over the weekend and actually had the unmitigated gall to ask Cheney if he really wanted to say what he had just said about the president. “You are speaking of the President, you mean to say that about the President of the United States of America?” That was rich indeed. How much of that kind of TLC did good ole George W. get from the lefties at CNN?

In closing, I go back to my original point. When the Republicans stop the internal squabbling and come together the Dems are in trouble. The left is still the left and out of ideas. It is an ideology that lives in the past and derives it strength from dividing people along all kinds of lines. The Republican Party has traditionally best represented America the idea. We are supposed to be one nation and not little fiefdoms based on race, class, ethnicity, sexual preference, etc. If only the GOP would wake up to its natural strengths as the party of thrift and hard work and the guarantors of true liberty as described by our Founding Fathers. They need to find their way out of the extremes and quickly. The damage that is potentially going to visited upon this country by the people in power now truly frightens me. For now, I am an independent, but when the GOP gets its act together I will gladly become a card-carrying Republican again. While I grew up a Dem I could never vote that way again.

  94. Perry logan says:

Apparently the GOP are blameless for everything wrong that has ever happened under the sun.

Even as we speak, the Heritage Foundation is preparing a report proving the entire Bush II administration was Bill Clinton’s fault.

    Forgiving the Neocons

  95. Fromtheheartland says:

This doesn’t involve the left. Meghan McCain replied to Laura Ingrahm, I listened to her(LI) and no explanation was needed. It seems to me that the two loudest republican women who are really making the party look bad are Ann Coulter and Laura Ingrahm. They are part of the reason that the party is becoming irrelevent. Even when I agree I can’t tolerate that kind of hatred toward people, toward my fellow Americans. They sure seem threatened by McCain, as they should. They say the absolute meanest things about people and then throw in Religion while they are still being really mean.Ingrahm sometimes appears to be wearing a crucifix that she took down from her wall around her neck to make her point. Sisters used to tell us to put Jesus closer to our hearts by covering the chest with clothing. Not that you shouldn’t wear anything that shows your chest just don’t wear your crucifix when it shows. Grace is suppose to come from within. I don’t really think Jesus wants to be involved in politics. He is really above all of this! McCain is reasonable and smart, we need more of both and she seems to be what young republicans are looking for!

  96. Bozo The Neoclown says:

honestly, do you expect any better than hypocrisy from someone who writes books rallying against elistism yet proudly crows in her bio on the book’s back cover she graduated from dartmouth?

  97. dsmith says:

This a woman who continues to swallow the “Iraq was involved in 9-11″ bullshit Bush and his neocon handlers sold to this nation has lost a lot of crediability with me.

Laura is a cancer survivor and really not all bad. She has to be loving the outcry…otherwise she couldn’t get arrested.

  98. KayInMaine says:

Oh how funny. Laura Ingraham is a lollipop stick with an evil cannonball lollipop for a head.

    90in6 Says:

Beck’s “We Surround Them, You Are Not Alone” 5pmET special, featuring a studio audience and viewing parties around the nation, was the top-rated show on cable news in the A25-54 demo last Friday, with 993,000 viewers. In fact it was the #1 show in that demo for the month of March. Beck was a close second to The O’Reilly Factor in Total Viewers, 3.07 million v. 3.19 million.

There were more viewers watching Beck’s 5pm show than watched the entire prime time (8-11pm) lineups on CNN and MSNBC.

I have a feeling Glenn is just fine.
    March 17th, 2009 at 1:28 am

Well, that explains why some Americans remain stupid when we find out they will stay home on a Friday night to watch an Evil Muppet subliminally telling them to form armed militias against the American people.

What you don’t know is the American people are sick of all of you and it’s YOU who make our nation unsafe!

    Down with the Domestic Terrorists!

  100. walruswheedchick says:

Laura wants some publicity. She probably has aspirations for office. Coulter didnt take on Meghan McCain’s challenge, I wonder why this never-heard-of-wanna-be Laura Ingraham is talking a LOT now. She has nothing important to say just like the rest of republican hicks. And let’s face it, McCain was f****ed up the a** by the repugs because he is a decent man just like her daughter. Look how the repugs handled his campaign. Now, who’s running the GOP?? Racist bigot hicks.

  101. Tallygirl says:

As a member of the “left”, I’d just like to say that I have no “indignation” (Who is this Ingraham person? From a clip I saw on TV, she’s Ann Coulter’s wannabe sister?) despite the fact that I’m a fat girl myself, but I am amused by the infighting on the right.

  102. steerpike says:

Laura, no one on the left is indignant. The only one who is indignant is Meghan McCain. The rest of us are just enjoying the catfight.

  103. Perry logan says:

I object to the phrase “left wing smearmongers.”

Pop Quiz: which American political party gave us the following terms?

    Witch hunt
    Enemies list
    Dirty tricks
    Watergate
    Hate radio
    Hate crime
    Gay bashing
    Smear machine
    Swiftboating
    Vote-flipping
    Rovean politics

So Coulter is the Santelli in this scenario, and Ingraham is the Cramer…

  105. pbg says:

This is the thing that kills the right-wing pundits. They slip off-base and savage (to coin a phrase) themselves.
As long as they’re just fluffing up the far-right-angrycrowd, they’re just fine. Their audience loves them, and most people don’t pay attention. The MSM runs the teeniest bit of interference for them, and the Machine works.
But then Rush goes after Michael J. Fox, mocks his Parkinson’s, demonstrates his complete ignorance of the disease, and, further, that he couldn’t care less.
A lot of people now know Rush for that incident alone.
And now Laura goes after the Republican candidate’s daughter by calling her ‘plus-size’. And when the daughter fights back, Laura won’t back down, and attacks–the liberals.
People know less about Laura than about Rush, so this is going to be 90% of her public image from here on in.

  106. moondancer says:

The fact is Laura “she-wolf of the SS” Ingraham is incapable of producing satire or comedy. She uses the fig leaf of satire for her meanness, her hate. Worst yet, she is handicapped by her second rate mind and is incapable of teh funny, except the unintended.

  107. Marie says:

I love this – Ingraham and her cohort Coulter are contributing to the realization that rightwingers are cruel and meanspirited.

  108. lefty says:

McCain writes a column critical of Coulter. Ingraham calls her fat. McCain sez kiss her butt. Ingraham sends out an email blast which begins with… the left?

WTF does this have to do with us? More hypocrisy from the Personal Responsibility crowd blaming everyone else in sight.

  109. Xisithrus says:

There were more viewers watching Beck’s 5pm show than watched the entire prime time (8-11pm) lineups on CNN and MSNBC. -90in6

Yes, but America has a population of some 300 million which means 299+ million had better things to do than watch Glenn ‘Dr Jack Daniels’ Beck. Besides that, even with all these ratings about some pundit popularity contest people keep spouting, the GOP has been losing since 2006…

  110. Keith says:

And conservatives thought they were so funny when they ridiculed the looks of nine year-old Amy Carter and twelve year-old Chelsea Clinton.

  111. 4httr says:

It takes one to know one Laura.

  112. Hawkeye says:

God what a bottom feeding child. You stay classy Laura.

  113. J. Fred Smug says:

I used to listen to Laura Ingraham’s podcasts via iTunes, both because it’s important to “know your enemy” and for pure entertainment value. Since Obama’s election, she has become increasingly MORE shrill and obviously unhinged. I recently deleted her podcasts from my lineup as she now is simply over the top.

May God have mercy upon Maria, her adopted daughter from Guatemala.

  114. Joe the Philosopher says:

    Dear Laura,

Are you now willing to admit…in a court of law…that all Republicans are idiots?

Are you willing to take a lie-detector test?
