Wash Times editor John Solomon claims ‘Conservatives’ site won’t be a ‘blurring of the lines’ of objectivity.

In his Media Notes column today, the Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz previews the Washington Times’ newest project, The Conservatives.com, which is aimed “reinventing the right.” In an interview with Kurtz, Washington Times executive editor John Solomon claimed that the new site wasn’t a “blurring of the lines” for the newspaper’s objectivity:

Executive Editor John Solomon sees no “blurring of the lines” with the paper’s news coverage, saying that only Times editorials and columns will be included. “Obviously our opinion pages are center-right, so this will be a center-right site packaged for people who enjoy that type of opinion,” he says. Solomon says TheConservatives.com (slogan: Reinventing the Right) will include video and a daily blog by Amanda Carpenter, formerly of Townhall.com, once it is fully developed this spring.

In a memo he issued soon after becoming the Times’ editor, Solomon said he would maintain “a bright line between news coverage and the advocacy of the editorial and opinion pages.” But as FishBowlDC points out, “it’s not the content, it’s the contributors that are blurring the line between opinion and news.” For instance, when the site’s top contributor, Amanda Carpenter, announced that she was taking the job, she indicated that she would be working on the news side of the paper. “I am very excited about this opportunity to work in a news room under the helm of Jeff Birnbaum and John Solomon,” wrote Carpenter.

Um, if the Right is so right, why does it have to be
    “Reinvented”?

  2. Roket says:

What’s in a name? Slander by any other name is still as libelous.

  3. kscitydude says:

What do you think would happen if The New YorkTimes started a website called The Progressives.com or The Liberal.com. The conservative media would have a field day with that.

  4. Xisithrus says:

Ummm, shouldnt the people of the right, not the media, be in charge of reinventing [Sounds like a new shade of lipstick] the right?

Watch, the Washington Times will be apologizing to Limbaugh for “reinventing” the right instead of applying more of the same as before.

If the NYTimes did that, it would be because they’re an agent of that “Librul Media”!

What if the media is owned by the Right?
Who’s the messenger and who’s the audience?

Solomon said he would maintain “a bright line between news coverage and the advocacy of the editorial and opinion pages.”

How did the chicken journalist cross the line to propoganda?
With a bright line to light the way, of course.

    Opinions…
    … Of the Right?

I remember some people on the Right authored some “OPINIONS” that reinvented the Right of NOT being humanely treated.

I think the media, such as Washington Times are centrist and USE conservatism to promote the Washington consensus.

That crazy owner Sun Myung Moon has ADMITTED he uses the Moonie Times to push his agenda and the guy is a nut. He had a coronation to proclaim himself messiah and true ruler of the world. A couple of Republican Congressmen showed up at it. He loses tens of millions a year on the rag of a paper and it is seen as a joke in political circles.

Yea, “blurring” is probably too tepid a word.

    Smothering is more like it.

  17. MapleStreet says:

Uh yeah. No conflict of interest there. No arriving at a pre-ordained conclusion. Nope, not at all.

  18. Tallygirl says:

“Reinventing” means more than just SAYING they’re going to reinvent themselves, then doing something DIFFERENT.

Not going to happen. I’m beginning to think they’re just here for our amusement, now.

  19. Gary Kleppe says:

Not to worry, John. You can’t blur what never existed.

Well, I guess “center-right” does make some sense, in particular considering the complete froot-loops (the Moonies) who own the Wash. Times…. But even “center-right” from an objective standpoint is way out in La-la-land. Just look at the Republican House members….

    Cheers,

    Did you read about this?

Now a Florida legislator has proposed that random drug-testing also be applied to those receiving unemployment insurance.

Florida State Senator Michael S. Bennett told Fox News host Steve Doocy that he worries that the Unemployment Trust Fund might be exhausted….

Bill Piper of the Drug Policy Alliance, which is dedicated to ending the “war on drugs,” responded that “to require someone to pass a drug test to get their unemployment insurance after they’ve been laid off is pretty cruel — and to require them to pay for the test themselves is even more cruel.”

  22. Max-1 says:

    Marie,
When I was unemployed, I couldn’t afford drugs, prescribbed or not. I was too busy worring about how to afford food.

  26. Marie says:

    Max-1 — Of course.
The republiscum idiot from Florida would have the unemployed person PAY for the test he would require.

I am continually astonished at the tone-deaf cruelty of the right wing.

Sun Myung Moon heard there was a void in Repug leadership and thought, “I’ll lead them out of the wilderness!”. He’s very upset about the way they right keeps calling Obama The Messiah. He thought everyone knew that HE was The Messiah!

    (snark off, sort of)

  29. mary says:

In the 70’s, the Moonies were the weirdest cult around (and back then, there were a lot of them).

They were always handing out these very naughty-looking fliers of what appeared to be drawings of naked people all getting together in what was billed as “love” fests. Very strange to see them now trying to be all ‘Conservative’!

  30. tombaker says:

There wouldn’t be a righty movement or a republican party today if it weren’t for True Father’s ongoing support.

  31. wiley says:

“it’s not the content, it’s the contributors that are blurring the line between opinion and news.”

Is “content” some kind of journalistic technical term in this context that makes it separate from the material that is contributed?

  32. wiley says:

There are a lot more moonies around now. There’s a list of front groups at this link

    http://www.freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/groups/m/moonies/front_groups.htm

Did you see this a couple of years ago:

But a dozen or more lawmakers allowed power fantasies to balloon a step too far when they honored invitations to the bizarre self-coronation of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon as Messiah at a Senate reception room last March.

The scene summoned the moment in Robert Graves’s ”I, Claudius” when Emperor Caligula declares himself a god in the Roman Senate; a fawning solon instantly offers a prayer. No lawmaker was reported praying to Mr. Moon, although Representative Danny Davis wore white gloves in presenting the pillow from which Mr. Moon snatched up his crown. Mr. Davis, an Illinois Democrat, later insisted his role was not related to campaign contributions he received from Mr. Moon, but to Mr. Moon’s efforts on behalf of world peace.

    1.
Surely the Sun Myung Moon-owned Washington Times isn’t center-right, but off the center of the ‘firm right’ (exemplified by the editorial boards of the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal).
    2.
Their opinion page is intended for entertainment purposes only, and no guarantee of probity, veracity, intellectual honesty or rational validity is expressed or implied.

Remember those group weddings? They have always been the subject of mockery — when did they gain prominence sufficient to have gotten the Republican Senate in Bush’s first term to allow them to have meetings in the White House.

  35. MapleStreet says:

I don’t know Marie. I laughed at the group weddings. But since then, a lot of baseball games have been the sites of mass weddings.

Admittedly, the baseball games are usually traditional Justice of the Peace or Protestant minister.

Never say an idea is too crazy for the American Public.

Re Education Band ?????? Considering the brainwashing implications of “Re-education” you’re kidding me – right ?

BTW – I almost liked the front group “Camp Pizza”. I could deal with that. Now if they introduce a “Camp Chocolate” I’ll be the first person in line.

  41. jhnwlk says:

I think Solomon’s statement can be seen as a clear one that, a) the lines are clear, and b) they’ll be on the far side of the farthest right line. Next!!
