McCain Refuses To Condemn Ingraham’s Attacks On His Daughter

mccaintweets.jpgLast week, ThinkProgress reported that hate radio host Laura Ingraham responded to Meghan McCain’s criticism of right-wingers like Ann Coulter by calling her “plus-sized.” Meghan shot back, telling Ingraham, “stop talking about my body.” Yesterday, Meghan ripped Ingraham on The View, saying, “Kiss my fat ass!”

Today, in his “Twitterview” with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) shied away from condemning Ingraham’s gratuitous attacks on his daughter. Stephanopoulos asked McCain, “What do you think of Meghan’s feud with Coulter and Ingraham?” McCain first said, “I’m proud of my daughter and she has a right to her opinions.” When asked if he agrees with his daughter, McCain did not say, simply stating, “like any family we agree on some things and disagree on others”:

mccaintweetsgeorge.jpg

Stephanopoulos, seeing that McCain didn’t want to go any further on the matter, tweeted to McCain, “I know I’m not getting anymore on Coulter and Ingraham.”

It’s unclear why McCain wouldn’t directly admonish Ingraham, who has mocked his daughter’s voice, weight, and just yesterday, called Meghan a “useful idiot.” But in the past, McCain has courted the extreme right of the GOP, granting an interview to Ingraham as late as October 2008. Throughout the presidential election, McCain, long considered too liberal by the extreme right, frequently appeared on hate radio shows, and he has a history of defending the bigoted remarks of right wingers.

Is McCain placing right-wing politicking before his own family?

Classy John! But then again, Didn’t he call his wife the c-word?

  2. SKdeA says:

    Hasn’t he always?
Or he would have stood up to the GOP for calling his Indian daughter a “black baby”, as if there was anything wrong with being black…

    HE’s A GOPIG!

  3. DNFP says:

Is McCain placing right-wing politicking before his own family?

I pose the following question as a definitive answer:

    Is he Republican?

THIS WHOLE FIASCO WAS A MANUFACTURED PUBLICITY STUNT IN ORDER TO KEEP MCCAIN’S NAME IN THE NEWS.

SO WHY ARE PROGRESSIVE NEWS OUTLETS HELPING HIM?

THIS OLD EXTINCT IDIOT SHOULD BE PUT OUT TO PASTURE

  10. misshusseinmolly says:

I doubt seriously that McCain’s refusal to get into this fight implies any support for Ingraham. Or Coulter (the criticism of whom by Meghan started this whole mess). I think instead that he believes his daughter is capable of fighting her own battles without her old man getting involved. Which, of course, she is.

Kudos to McCain for A) believing in his daughter, and B) not adding further fuel to the Ingraham publicity machine.

  11. SWBob says:

He’s trying to remember if he knows Meghan.

  12. spencers mom says:

According to sources, one of the reasons he started running around on Wife #1 as soon as he got home from Nam was because she had become “fat” after her car accident. Looking at Arizona Barbie, who is rail thin, I’m guessing that Ingraham said what McCain’s been thinking himself.

But what a pig he is for not standing up for his own daughter. Even Cheney, who has no heart, stood up for his.

    PEACE

  13. normalasf says:

Given McCain’s track record of calling women degrading names, I’m sure he doesn’t see anything wrong with it.

  14. Xisithrus says:

Stop it! Stop it! Glenn Beck loves his party and your making him cry, again!!

  15. MCMetal says:

What a pathetic old fool ; more worried about his re-election campaign in 2010 and believing he needs a brainless bimbo like Ingraham in his corner than his own daughter.

What a piece of shit …………..

  16. LeeHope says:

I beleive that John McCain is just outright clueless on what this so-called feud was all about between his daughter hate radio hostess Ingraham……

  17. Mike71654 says:

No surprise here..this is the republican way..They would sell out there own children..no questions asked.

  18. aquarius2 says:

Actually, (hope I don’t get struck by lightening) but I agree with McCain in not taking sides. It would probably be easy for him to apply pressure on Ingraham but he is letting his daughter fight her own battles.

  19. tom says:

The real “useful idiots” in this little melodrama are Ingraham, Coulter and all the rest of the right-wing rant jockeys who are jumping in on Meghan. None of them have learned the first rule of recovery: “When you find yourself in a hole, quit digging.”

  20. Jackie says:

McCain has shown that none of his children matter nor does his wives, it’s all about himself. Megan now only has a Mother and should put an ad in the paper for a real Father who will protect their daughter. This is an example of Republican Christian Family Values. Megan always supported her Father but when she needs support he turns his back on her.

  21. A Patriot Acting says:

So one useless idiot twitters to a useless reporter idiot about another useless reporter isiot’s comments about his useful idiot of a daughter? Got it! Or could McLame’s coyness on the subject be due to his abject abhorrance of pork?

  22. A Patriot Acting says:

Remember that this is the SAME old fool who HIRED the people who spread false rumors about his adopted daughter during the ‘04 election cycle.

That just doesn’t fit what we’ve seen of McCain’s behavior and character over the last year or so. Now with the campaign over, McCain doesn’t have to pretend to have any respect for women in general and Meghan in particular. If he’d specifically said, “Meghan can take care of herself,” I’d buy your suggestion, but he was more dismissive than supportive.

  26. RantingTommy says:

McCain is a wimp, just like all fear-addled right wing cowards

What kind of man does not defend his daughter when one of his pals calls her a “useful idiot.” I didn’t realize that McCain could sink even lower in my estimation.

  29. hellinabucket says:

For McCain to allow Ingraham to call her daughter a “Useful Idiot” and not stand up for her tells me all I need to know about the qualities of John McCain.

Politics aside, nobody would get away with insulting my child in such a piss ant manner without getting a full on taste of my wrath.

    I’m not surprised.

  32. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Wow, with a dad like that who needs enemies. What a slap in the face for Meghan.

I’m not surprised, though. John McCain has always put his politics ahead of his family. He doesn’t live with Cindy and probably never has. He married her for her money so buy political influence and he got what he wanted. What I don’t understand is why Cindy doesn’t dump him now that she knows she will never be First Lady. What’s in it for her to hang on to the old coot?

  33. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    aquarius2 Says:
Actually, (hope I don’t get struck by lightening) but I agree with McCain in not taking sides. It would probably be easy for him to apply pressure on Ingraham but he is letting his daughter fight her own battles.

There’s a big difference between allowing your children to fight their own battles and allowing someone to insult your children. If McCain truly cared about his daughter he would have said something to the affect of “I don’t think that Laura Ingraham should be insulting my daughter, but she is a big girl and can fight her own battles”.

  34. avshanbh says:

John McCain’s loyalty lies with the Republican Party and it’s wingnuts rather than his own family. He did call his wife a c*@t in front of reporters.

  35. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

I’m waiting for Malkin to jump into the fray.

  36. Marie says:

This is John McCain. This is republican thinking. This is party above principle. Party over people. Party is paramount.

He has, in the past, publicly humiliated his wife. He does not defend his daughter, Meghan. We know what republicans think of women, in general – at home, at work, in politics, wherever — they are thought to be not quite as good as men. They couch their misogyny in terms of chivalry, protectiveness, courtesy, and such terms – but that is facetious – the truth is undeniable: they are male chauvenists.

Having said that, McCain may not want to fight his daughter’s battles for her – and Meghan may have indeed told him not to do so – if that’s the case, it should be accepted.

However, the history of McCain, the history of the party do not add validity to that argument.

  37. RandomChaos says:

    Oh how “Mavericky” of him.

    pffft. Spineless Gasbag

  38. rmwarnick says:

I seem to recall the Republican Party presented itself as the party that was tougher than terrorists. Now they can’t even stand up to mere radio personalities. After being slapped in the face again and again.

  39. Tired of being lied to says:

See, there are things you do and say for party politics, and there are things you do and say for family relationships.

But you never get the two mixed up. Ever.

  40. SP Biloxi says:

Politics before family is Grandpappy McSame’s motto. Country first, American people second was his campaign motto as the GOP Presidential nominee 08. A zebra doesn’t change its stripes. No different than McSame.

  41. curious says:

This man has no shame and no loyalty, not toward his family. To him it is the party first and his career. He even forgave and embraced the party after what Karl Rove and the party did to him during the 2000 campaign. The most horrendous remarks about McCains character. And the next time we see him literally hugging George Bush during Bush’s birthday party.

But when you think about how McCain treated his first wife when he was released from Vietnam, you can see just where his loyalty comes in. Certainly not to family. Anyone and everyone is thrown away material for his career. Only those who can do him some good can outlast his maneuvering for political gains. Certainly not his first wife, his daughter or even his second wife.

His daughter has stirred up a hornets nest. And she seems strong enough to take care of herself. If she has a better political character then her father she will be ok. But if she thinks she can depend on him to take a blow for her, she must think again.

Politics and the people who play the game, are a filthy lot. And decency and right seldom have much to do with it. I cannot understand why this lovely young woman would want to enter politics, or the Republican party, but she will have to be strong, independent and develop the hide of a rhinoceros.

John McCain is no inspiration or example for anyone to live by.

  42. ctcadguy says:

  43. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Even Cheney, who has no heart, stood up for his.

Actually, your only partly correct. Cheney only “stood up” for his daughter when she was merely mentioned by a democrat. When Mary Cheney was criticized directly by some right wing religious group (”Focus on the Family” I think), cheney kept his mouth shut like a little b#tch…. None of these politicians are brave enough to stand up to the right wing fundamentalist mobs/groups/organizations who give them voting stregth because I think they know how viscious and vendictive they are..

  44. joe cantwell says:

    john mccain,

  45. Laszlo Panaflex says:

He knows if he bad mouths Dr. Ingrown he’ll end up grovelling before her like the others with Limpbo. His political standing comes in line long before wifey or the girl.

  46. And Yet... says:

Considering McCain’s impulsive public displays of temper, I’ve often wondered if his household might be a verbally or physically abusive one, particularly toward female members. Daughter Meghan & wife Cindy “adore” the old badger in public. So loyal to Johnny, so deferential to his opinions….so well controlled when under his watchful eye, perhaps.

  47. Harv3 says:

Thank goodness TP hasn’t promoted Laura Ingraham from, “hate radio host[sic]“, to the ultimate insult: Nazi! :-)

  48. Blackacre says:

    I thought he couldn’t use a computer.

  49. qatwoman says:

I’ve said it before and looks like I can say it agaian. I refused to voted for McPain after the 2000 primaries cause the man can’t seem to be able to defend his OWN FAMILY! IF he won’t defend them, HOW IN THE HELL CAN WE EXPECT HIM to defend US????????

  50. MrBrown says:

Man. He’s not running for pres any more, and he’s still pandering to the base. What will it take? Micheal Steele sleeping with his wife?

  51. And Yet... says:

#53- Total agreement here. McCain doesn’t hide very well that fact that it’s always been All About Johnny. If the family is adoring him, great, if they’re being a liability, well, it IS all about Johnny isn’t it?

In that context, not defending his daughter from Ingraham’s insults makes perfect sense to Mr. “It’s All About Me.”

  52. Ekim says:

He’s no Harry Truman, that’s for sure!

  53. dasm says:

The same John McCain who called his wife the c word and a trollop. Seems he isn’t respectful of female family members.

  54. Hoodathunk says:

A helpful note to all children of Republican parentage…Who’s your daddy?

Sorry, Megan (and all the others) but it appears to be Rush.

  55. dbearton says:

John McSame is senile. He does not know what he thinks.

  56. StrollingAlong says:

Has McCain told anyone how to get Usama bin Laden.

During ythe campaign that was his big thing.

I know how to get him.

    Just asking.

  57. SickupandFed says:

That is one sorry excuse for a man.

  58. southrnbelle says:

YOU PIECE OF SH$T, A$%HOLE, TRAITOR, SORRY EXCUSE FOR A FATHER. YOU CAN’T EVEN SUPPORT YOUR OWN DAUGHTER FROM THIS RIGHT-WING BULLSH$T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. lvdragonlady says:

Just goes to show that the ONLY person JM cares about is JM.
Just be glad he did not become president, he would have been so busy beating his chest and crowing that he would not have done a d*mn thing but lower taxes for the rich.
