The Husband Of Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Is A ‘Protector Of The Palin Brand’

During the presidential campaign, Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren had perhaps the best access to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin of any journalist. In September, she hosted a one-hour “documentary” on the GOP vice presidential candidate, titled “Governor Sarah Palin — An American Woman.” She also scored an exclusive interview with Todd Palin, in which she grilled him “on everything from the story behind the name ‘First Dude’ to how he feels about the name ‘First Dude.’”

After the election ended, Palin chose Van Susteren for her first national television interview. Since then, Greta has consistently covered Palin, keeping an eye out for any potential slights to the governor and gushing over her popularity.

Yesterday, the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza revealed one of the reasons that Van Susteren may have so much interest in and access to Palin. It turns out that her husband, John Coale, is one of “the figures charged with guiding Palin’s political image in Washington”:

Coale, a well-known Washington lawyer and the husband of Fox News Channel’s Greta Van Susteren, drew national media attention when he endorsed Sen. John McCain’s presidential bid in protest of the way in which Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who he backed in the primary, was treated. Coale, in an interview with the Fix, described himself simply as a “friend” of the Alaska governor but acknowledged that he suggested she start a leadership PAC and helped her navigate through some of the questions surrounding her family that lingered after the campaign. Others familiar with Palin’s political team insist that Coale has far more power than he is letting on — essentially helping to run Sarah PAC. Coale demurred on that front, noting only that he talks to Palin regularly and that she is a “fascinating person” who is “definitely not what the right thinks or the left thinks.”

According to a Nexis search, starting on the day that Sarah Pac was announced, Van Susteren has never disclosed her husband’s behind-the-scenes role on air. Here is how she reported the announcement of Sarah Pac:

VAN SUSTEREN: Does Governor Sarah Palin have her eye on a presidential run in 2012? There’s one more clue tonight. The Alaskan governor has her own political action committee up and running–www.sarahpact.com went up on the web this morning.

Governor Palin says the pact is dedicated to building America’s future, supporting fresh ideas and candidates who share our vision for reform and innovation. [Fox News, 1/27/09]

Ironically, just last week, Van Susteren decried people thinking she’s “so close to the Palin family.” “The only way that I’ve met them is by interviewing them,” she said, never mentioning her husband’s relationship to Palin. Watch it:

Update On her show last night, Van Susteren dedicated an entire segment to criticizing David Letterman for making a joke about Palin and her family.

The ability to lie with impunity is apparently required by the Fox News job application process.

Very nice, massive conflict of interest Greta. But then you work for an organization where scruples, honesty and professionalism are nothing more than meaningless platitudes so it all makes sense.

    Just saying . . .

Hmmm. The Palin Brand. I realize that the USA is very much a capitalistic/consumer society, but have we really debased ourselves to the point where an ill-educated, ignorant and brazenly incurious politician is a brand to be protected?

God help us all if Sarah Palin ever relocates to our nation’s capital, in any position of leadership and responsibility.

Between he and Lady Lynn, I dont know who’s the larger hypocrite. Jumping to a ticket with a woman on it, because your candidate was the victim of some imaginary sexism during the primary.
When people said that Palin was against everything Clinton stood for, that was not a partisan attack, it was the honest truth. He and Greta can continue to back whatever is in heels at the moment if they want. So much for intelligent journalism…

  20. hanshiro says:

FOX hack in the tank for the republicans, ‘inadvertent creative editing,’ hyper-partisan republican cesspools guised as ‘news commentators’ catapulting the propaganda…

I remember when two FOX ‘reporters’ were captured by Palestinian militants (and have since been released) and one writer wrote an article asking whether FOX’s employees could really be considered separate from bush’s war machine or rather an extension of the Pentagon:

    (excerpt)

No one has violated the basic standards of journalistic integrity more consistently than FOX News. Their unwavering support for the war in Iraq demonstrates their blatant disregard for professional evenhandedness and neutrality. Dissenting opinions are scrupulously scrubbed from their broadcasts while the vulgar displays of jingoism and xenophobia are presented as “Fair and Balanced” coverage. On some FOX web sites it’s still possible to find articles which claim that Weapons of Mass Destruction were actually found in Iraq. No wonder nearly 50% of the American people still believe that Saddam posed a threat to our national security and that Bush’s illegal invasion was justified.

Reporters are given immunity because their work is perceived to be beyond the activities of combatants. That rule cannot be applied to FOX. FOX is the corporate-arm of the war machine; a critical cog in the Pentagon’s information-management strategy. It is as indispensable to the smooth operation of the modern army as any of the high-tech weaponry or space-age gadgetry.

FOX News is franchise journalism; information that is crafted to meet the requirements of ownership. Counterpunch editor Alexander Cockburn summarized the Rupert Murdoch business-model this way:
(Murdoch) offers target governments a privatized version of a state propaganda service, manipulated without scruple and with no regard for truth. His price takes the form of vast government favors such as tax breaks, regulatory relief, monopoly markets and so forth. The propaganda is undertaken with the greatest cynicism, whether it’s the stentorian fake populism and soft porn in the UK’s Sun and News of the World, or the shameless bootlicking of the butchers of Tiananmen Square; (Alexander Cockburn “A Journey into Rupert Murdoch’s Soul” counterpunch.org)

The journalists who participate in the Murdoch-system are mere functionaries in a corporate news-militia. They deserve the same treatment as any other POW, nothing more.

FOX and the pretense of ‘journalism’ is a universal joke among all but the lowest intellectual common denominator.

  21. buzzbomb says:

wait, wait, let me guess Archie… “Sarah Palin is a great woman. She can do no wrong because she is a republican idiot like myself.” Sound about right there Archibald.

You obviously don’t understand merchandizing. “Uneducated, uninformed and hypocritical” IS her brand. Right-wingers go crazy for it.

Well, the “hypocritical” part isn’t that appealing to them on an emotional level. They just recognize it as a necessary nutrient. But “Uneducated” and “Uninformed” — those things are like catnip to wingnuts.

I’m certainly not surprised to learn that the spouse of Greta Van Susteren would be such a person. That this couple would be so deficient in their powers of discernment speaks volumes about the current state of journalism and legal practice in this country — i.e., pathetic.

Members of this country’s Reich Wing are all in bed with each other, colluding to promote and protect their selfish interests. “Community” and “society” mean nothing to these people, who apparently exist only to increase the size of their bank accounts/investment portfolios and acquire larger houses and more possessions.

My guess on the whole “sock alert” thing, and I stress that it’s only a guess:

You know how obvious this troll is, how it’s clear within a very short amount of time who he is no matter which handle he uses? It seems plausible to me that people repeatedly busted him on his obvious use of sock puppets, and one of these people said, “Sock puppet alert” every time he did it. Maybe getting caught made him so furious, he now likes to use that expression against other posters in a “See how you like it!” way, even when those posters aren’t using sock puppets, and even when circumstances don’t remotely dictate it.

    shoeless, RUC,
And let’s not forget that Alaska, under Palin, is one you-bet’cha of a welfare state.

It doesn’t count as welfare if it’s for white people.

  95. Fred says:

    Archie B Says:
All of Beck viewers and listeners are far above average, so to answer your question, no.

    Average what? Average village idiot?

  96. alpuz3 says:

So is “no” your answer to my first question as well?

How about taking a stab at my second question, arch?

  97. Fred says:

John Kerry Says: watch me show everyone how smart I am!!!!!!!!!!! I am so smart, I use a war hero’s name as my username because I disrespect American veterans. Drool, wipe, drool some more.

  98. tombaker says:

takes a real freak to grudge up the way you do JK

    -congratulations

  99. Smith1 says:

    John Kerry Says:

One LITTLE thing you forgot to mention! Johnny Coale is one of YOU – a lib!!

And? Is that supposed to make it less unethical? Or are you expecting “libs” to fall into lockstep like you “cons” do all the time?

  100. tombaker says:

JK just loves him some chickenhawk.

prolly went awol from basic himself, when he got to missin his mama – she’s the only one who really understands what a very, very special boy he is.

  101. Zooey says:

    John Kerry Says:

YOU GOT IT!!! But you made one critical mistake:
John Kerry was NO war hero! He was and is a complete joke!

    Ohhhh, the irony…

  102. Daivie says:

The coming Palin Winter. It doesn’t matter that Palin is an inexperienced, bigoted imbecile–she will be elected president in 2012. As soon as the media turn against Obama, the republicans will rise to the occasion, and their only viable candidate is the idiot Palin. We must never forget the power of the lunatic fringe which was born under Reagan and thrived under Bush. As repulsive as they and Palin are, they can influence the masses. And they will. As our recession slips into depression, Obama and the democrats will get the blame and TeamSarah, Rush and Hannity and the rest of the wing nuts will push Sarah out there. The coming Palin winter will be worse for America and the world than a nuclear winter.

  103. Fred says:

I can’t believe it. jk has a weak spot. He doesn’t like it that one of the greatest Americans ever is John Kerry.

  104. Smith1 says:

    Fred Says:
    Average what? Average village idiot?

Above average lunacy is what archie/habib means.

  105. ralph the wonder llama says:

Welcome, Smith1. Make sure you get your turns at Whack-A-Troll™. Sometimes when the trolls are particularly stupid and inviting (like today), the regulars assert their seniority and jump line.

    You mean, besides his “brain”?

  107. Fred says:

    Daivie Says:
the republicans will rise to the occasion

Dude, they can’t even decide who is the head of the gop. They can’t find anything to stand for. They have been identified as the cause of the recession. I think you give them too much credit. I think they have shot their wad so to speak.

  108. Fred says:

    Fred Says:
I can’t believe it. jk has a weak spot.

    ralph the wonder llama Says:
    You mean, besides his “brain”?

Well, I actually meant anything that would keep his attention for longer than a bag of boiled peanuts but you make a point.

  109. alpuz3 says:

JK, mind if I ask you a couple of questions?

  110. ralph the wonder llama says:

Hi Troll JK. What do you think about GVS interviewing Sarah Palin without disclosing that he husband is an advisor to the Governor’s PAC?

Any thoughts on that? … You know… THE TOPIC?

  111. alpuz3 says:

What is your reason for referring to President Obama as “Brotha O?”

  112. Pernell says:

This is old news. Coale and Greta supported Hillary because Bill C. shilled for Scientology with the government of Germany. Scientology would support anyone who helps them and they see Obama as not Scientology friendly.

The Black helicopters took off a while back on this.

A theory emerged this week (Feb 09) that Van Susteren’s husband, John Coale, a powerful Washington D.C. trial lawyer, is enamored by Palin and put up the cash to create SarahPac. Also, the fact that Van Susteren and her husband are strong followers of Scientology appears to add some sub text to the story line.

The couple’s relationship to Scientology has been well covered in the media and on blogs. While at CNN, Van Susteren was accused of pressuring management to kill a story critical of scientology. Coale has represented the interests of the church in various lawsuits, including a suit against the makers of Ritalin. [...]

When Hillary Clinton lost her bid, Coale began looking for a candidate that would be friendly towards Scientology because Obama was not.

  113. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Apparently, BoldFaceLiar is not “sure” about answering questions after all.

Who could have seen that coming?
    Swiftboating is so much easier.

  114. nanlichi says:

Archie the Scientologist child molestor is back and joined by the always entertaing self loathing JK. What a pair of losers. I bet they have us surrounded though.

  115. nanlichi says:

Oooooh, caps lock and bold! I think someone’s got a crush on you ralph.

  116. ralph the wonder llama says:

Troll JK — so you have nothing to say about the TOPIC?

    TYPICALl!!!

  117. Yamunation says:

    1. She’s married?
    2. The “Palin Brand” is interesting to note. Palin isn’t really a capable person, but as a brand, she becomes popular. Sort of like Crocs. They are ugly shoes, but marketed correctly, people flock to these hideous things are are willing to be seen wearing them in public.

  123. EugeneDebs says:

    Archie B Says:

March on with the smear, thugs!
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

While YOU march on with the stupidity, MORON

  124. Daivie says:

General question : I truly believe the imbecile Palin will be the republican nominee in 2012. Let’s assume for a moment that I’m correct. The question is why will the GOP hierarchy and talk show hosts promote Palin instead of a smart, experienced candidate? Is it still all about a veiled attempt to overturn Roe V Wade ? Again–why Palin ?

  125. EugeneDebs says:

Jk you ignorant racist moron. Love your delusions. You are a lair and a fool but its always funny to see your deranged posts so fact free so oblivious. You are the epitome of the brainwashed Limborg cretin. John Kerry WAS a war hero and YOU are just a liar and a fool. Dont bother to tell us all the rightwing lies that everyone with two functional braincells to rub together has already SEEN are lies. That have been debunked hundreds of times it is a waste of time. You are a liar. Programmed to tell your lies by the screechmonkeys that do your thinking for you. What a pathetic loser you are. Isnt it time you did the world a favor, made it just a little brighter and go kill yourself?

  126. Joe the Philosopher says:

Greta is married? I always thought she was one of Cinderella’s three sisters.

  127. EugeneDebs says:

    Archie B Says:

All of Beck viewers and listeners are far above average, so to answer your question, no.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

You mean far above average for ignorant brainwashed morons like YOU? I would dispute that is true. Beck is anastonishingly ignorant bombthorwing cretin. Even WERE it true that would be about like being the power forward on the Pygmy basketball team.

  128. EugeneDebs says:

Anything would seem intelligent compared to YOU JK you ignorant racist punk. You are a liar, you are a fool and you are without decency. Smearing a war hero with your LIES that have been PROVEN to be lies by the facts. You dont CARE about truth facts or reality its only the smear that matters to you becuase you are a parasitic piece of garbage without a shred of decency. You are ignorant and you are brainwashed and you wouldnt know the truth if it kicked you in the balls and slept with the rubber wife you keep in the closet

  129. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Uh, Troll JK…

how did YOU find out that AIG had contributed to Obama’s campaign? Perhaps because it was disclosed?

You’re STILL not my type. I don’t find “STUPID” attractive!!!!

  130. dbadass says:

    John Kerry:
    Knockwurst, kraut, stone ground mustard….

  131. pete says:

I thought everyone already knew why Bible Spice was advanced for VP. The RNC actually pulled off a clever bit of politicking.

    1. She kept the Psychochristians(TM) in line when they were ready to bolt from Flippy McSpin’s feigned “moderate” positions.

    2. She ensured that Ol’ Flippy would lose. The movers and shakers of the GOP knew that things would get worse before they get better and another 4 years of GOoPers in control would have cemented their place in infamy.

The elite of the Reichwing may use morons for their dirty work but they are not morons themselves.

  132. Smith1 says:

    Archie B Says:

Why didn’t The Messiah disclose to all of us that AIG contributed to his campaign?

I wasn’t aware that your messiah, crazy glen beck, had a campaign. Why don’t you tell us all about that, archie/habib.

  133. tombaker says:

nice work fellas – i could feel jk’s frustration and pain from here….you’re starting to put the vulcan mindfuk on him something fierce

i rest better knowing he’s resting worse.

  134. dbadass says:

This is getting tiresome you oddball. there are plenty of better porn sites then your weird infected shit…

  135. dbearton says:

Greta is a MSM stooge! She is Faux News trash.

  136. AllenAllen says:

BOYCOTT FOX! It is a propaganda channel for Murdoch’s extream right wing views. BOYCOTT ALL FOX! If you are watching “The Simpsons,” or any FOX TV or movies, you are aiding a abetting Murdoch.
