Colin Powell’s former chief of staff: Cheney is ‘evil,’ his fearmongering is ‘assisting’ al Qaeda.

cheney-snarl.jpgWeeks after President Obama was inaugurated, Dick Cheney gave an interview to Politico slamming Obama’s detainee policies and warning that he was making America less safe (charges he repeated again last Sunday). Lawrence Wilkerson, Colin Powell’s former chief of staff who left the Bush administration in protest, wrote an essay on the Washington Note last evening slamming Cheney’s fearmongering. Wilkerson calls Cheney “evil” and says his detainee policies were only “assisting” terrorists:

Cheney went on to say in his McLean interview that “Protecting the country’s security is a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business. These are evil people and we are not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek.” I have to agree but the other way around. Cheney and his like are the evil people and we certainly are not going to prevail in the struggle with radical religion if we listen to people as he. [...]

But al-Qa’ida will be back. Iraq, GITMO, Abu Ghraib, heavily-biased U.S. support for Israel, and a host of other strategic errors have insured al-Qa’ida’s resilience, staying power and motivation. How we deal with the future attacks of this organization and its cohorts could well seal our fate, for good or bad. Osama bin Laden and his brain trust, Aman al-Zawahiri, are counting on us to produce the bad. With people such as Cheney assisting them, they are far more likely to succeed.

Wilkerson also writes that Powell and Richard Armitage “labored to ameliorate the GITMO situation from almost day one” but that Rumsfeld and Cheney were “[s]tanding resolutely” in the way and would “have none of it.”

Terrorists want to instill terror. Cheney has been giving them a helping hand for eight years.

Better late than never. Let’s hear some more from the rational fringe. The radical fringe (Cheney and Company) have not only worn out their welcome, they have dang near destroyed us.

Actually, Cheney has been creating terrorists and terrorism for about 40 years.

It’s one thing to be bad but doing what they have done wrapped in a flag while holding a bible..That is truly the evil part.

When will the Constitution and the laws of America be enforced? When will the traitor, war criminal Cheney be imprisoned? Can America be saved much less restored? Where is the outrage? Yes, it is misplaced! Yes, Americans are confused. And, yes, America is getting what it deserves.

  10. Hoodathunk says:

Pre 9/11? The Republicans have been manufacturing boogie men for my entire life. Just take Cuba, 40 years ago they had a possibility of being a problem. Now just how scared should we be of a little island with no links to anything of consequence yet the word is still out there.

Republicans have no qualms about making up enemies to be feared.

Cheney is very good at instilling terror, much better than terrorists who have a grudge against the U.S. foreign policies. He’s a terrorist that has a grudge against the middle-class.

Just look at the Trillion plus we are into because he and his ilk terrorized this country into an invasion of Iraq.

  20. Chuck Feney says:

Cheney went on to say in his McLean interview that “Protecting the country’s security is a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business. These are evil people and we are not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek.

That is Old Testament thinking– an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth mindset.

He repudiates the New Testament message with his “we are not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek” dig at Jesus.

He took to the shadows at the speed of darkness. What a sad, frightened, angry person.

Republican fearmongering is well documented. They demonstrated it quite clearly when France did not want to join Bush on his Iraq fiasco, and suddenly it became hip for the wingnuts to hate the French. It was the hate de jour.

Republicans must have scapegoats. It is essential to give them strong feelings of unity. It is one of the fourteen common denominators of all fascist regimes.

  22. krystalview says:

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld are NO DIFFERENT than Osama Bin Laden. Republicans ( like Pete Sessions of Texas) are as much TERRORISTS as the TALIBAN.

  24. Nevar says:

“Dick Chaney had a assasination team.”

I am not willing to put “Cheney’s team” in the past tense.
He is the point man for very powerful and well hidden corporate entities. The oil industries and the arms industries he has served very well over the years.
Cheney was the driving force behind the Iraq invasion, George W.Bush was nothing more than a slack-jawed dummy on his knee.
As long as he is willing to spout his hatred and fear mongering, his corporate masters will prop him up, pay his bills, and do his dirty work.

  25. Max-1 says:

    Hoodathunk,
Yes, Our leaders/Elected Officials have been very good at creating “reasons” (read enemy) to go to war because after all…
There’s a killing to be had at making war, NO?

It’s an industry that brings home the bacon, so to speak, to local communities. Boeing, Raytheon, G.E. etc… wouldn’t be so big if it wasn’t for the military industrial complex.

However, one can not bake a cake without the wet ingredients, so what shall one do but go around stirring up a little trouble here, assist a radical fringe militant there, take out one foreign leader so as to replace them with a former US Ambassador.

    Simply put, since 9/11…
… The chickens are coming home to roost. That piper must be paid. Why must America foot the bill so as to keep those who foment such aggressions back against us be “BAILED OUT” by CONgress by keeping legal measures unavailable at convienient times?

I’m just as p.o’d about what has been done in our name as you are.

  26. New England Indy says:

    krystalview,

I saw Pete Sessions at the end of the Durbin hearing yesterday on the drug wars in Mexico. He felt the need to point out that the druglords can get their guns from other countries too so the fact that most are coming from the US is a-ok and that the 2nd amendment will never change in this country.
Well..even though I’m progressive I am for the 2nd amendment but it does’nt mean that we should be selling assault weapons to Mexican drug cartels..What an ass that guy is.

  29. Max-1 says:

    Chuck Feney,
I would ask, what life time are we trying to “WIN” in?

In Christ’s time, the right and left side mattered. “Turning the other cheek” refers to standing your ground, forcing your accuser to backhand you. Forcing them to show their contempt for your being. The right hand was used for constructive purposes… eating, greeting, etc. The left was for cleaning one’s @ss, slapping a face, etc. And then, only the palm was appropriate. To backhand someone across the left cheek, was the ultimate act of disrespect.

If anything, Cheney is advocating turning tail and not facing those who seek to harm you… you know, like the coward Cheney is.

  30. Nevar says:

“It is different. Cheney is alive.”

    Thanks, Juan C.

Cheney is all the more hideous for his power and corrupt soul.

Wilkerson has been a whistleblower and screaming from the rooftops for a long time now, he has street cred. He was there. And he spoke up. (Check out The Fall of the Hosue of Bush for just one reference)

Don’t look at what people say. Look at what they do.
Bush moved to a Texas suburb, happily free of the brush which was his obsession for eight years. Did Cheney move back to Wyoming? No. Google “COG”. And don’t believe Cheney’s protest-too-much comments about not receiving intelligence reports anymore and “I’m on the outside now.” Yeah, right. Look at his bio. Bet there’s a bunker under the bunker.

When you look deep into the abyss the abyss also looks into you…Neitzsche

I have to say I don’t believe in “evilness”. We have an inherent system of moral values, therefore we tend to describe almost any situation with moral judgements. I try to resist myself against this.

    People kill for 3 reasons:

    1) Passion. You find your wife with another man. You snap and kill them.

    2) Impulse. You are sick, you have schizophrenia or another pathological desease due to lack/ excess of a chemical in your brain.

    3) Profit. You are going to benefit out of it.

Cheney, as much as almost anybody in any government that agrees to make an aggresive action, knowing that innocent and guilty people is just going to get killed, kills due to the 3rd reason.

There is no evil in my opinion. Just AIG: arrogance, incompetence and greed. Heh.

Pardon me, but this one irks. Every military person swears a similar oath to the Presidents…to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It is even more demanding of an officer. He had a duty to his country. Resigning is an option for an officer in disgrace. Standing up for the Constitution is not a disgrace, it is a duty.

Powell resigned because he could not perform his duty as an officer.

  85. tbone says:

What annoys me at this point (well one of many things), is that the outrage of America can only be elicited by FINANCIAL issues. Cheney lied, tortured, no-bid contracted, fomented war, and is partly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans and many thousands of Iraqis and Afhanis. And what has this country more upset? $165 million dollars in unwarranted bonuses. This nation has truly lost all sense of priority and its identity. Just look at that tool Glenn Beck. The torture and deaths of living people cannot elicit tears, but stimulus packages bring forth a cascade of emotions in the guy. Sickening.

  86. Hoodathunk says:

Tbone, the financial issue is first. The rest have to find a place in the line.

  87. Hoodathunk says:

Wiley, another irk, if we can’t expect heroism from one of the most senior members of our Armed Forces, what planet do you live on?

  88. tbone says:

    Hoodathunk:
Perhaps I wasn’t clear. My disgust is not because we are upset about legitimate grievances about the economy now, and other issues must be put on the back burner. It is that the majority of this country FAILED to be similarly outraged all throughout the Bush Administration when they were committing far worse crimes. The nation should have FLIPPED OUT on Cheney and Bush back then and threw them out on their butts. Now, we have to hope that these thugs eventually get dealt with appropriately.

  89. Hoodathunk says:

I hear you, tbone. Just think where we might be is a former SOS and war hero had stood up and said things were screwed up when he realized it. Heroes do matter and Powell was as close to one as we have seen in a while. He had a hammer and traded it for a couch.

WHO asked ya for “protection?” WHO in he11 lied to accomplished a sneak attack on a weaker country? WHO invaded and occupied a sovereign nation? WHO used our finest to hunt down and kill a head of state, his family and civilians?
    WHO! MF! WHO!!

A dirty, mean, nasty MF like you. Indeed!

These are evil people and we are not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek.” I have to agree but the other way around.

Pure evil arrogance there, I tell ya.
you don’t know what President Obama will do in any given situation. But them again he wouldn’t make shit up to suit his ego/super ego like you pappy.
So diplomacy is “turning the other cheek?” GTFOOH

Turn the other cheek? We know what you do doing your “fight/war.” You run and hide six stories deep in some bunker like a little weak b1tch. Hide again instigator. RUN! You have been wrong since nixon.

What make President Obama reasoning suitable sane is that he listens to intel from intelligent people and doesn’t make it up on the fly. Madman.

The United States of American was “attacked” under chimpy’s “watch.”
We were safe from “attack” for exactly 60 year.

I agree, buckshot-cheney is making it worse all over the place. he just identified his enemies as “evil people.”
he’s an old fart with 1916s ideas that are way pass its “prime.”

    you’re a RACIST!
    For real!

It’s time for you to take your medicine.

  94. RichardKanePA says:

People are saying that the al Qaeda threat is just hype, but not in the Muslim World or continental Europe, especially not in Spain that had it worse than the US. The few real al Qaeda diehard at Guantanamo said they would plead guilty only if they could be assured of getting the death penalty.

If these madmen discover their cause is hopeless, rather than falling on their sword, will commit isolated acts of terror to take a dozen or so people with them and it will look like Obama had failed.

    Terror alert bright orange,
    see,
“Terror attack may be imminent”. And the good news, “Piracy being dealt with without US getting bogged down in a new war, good news that we should learn from”
    http://capitolhillblue.com/cont/node/15268
    http://capitolhillblue.com/cont/node/15937

Al Qaeda vowed to drive the US out of Saudi Arabia, but the US withdrew troops back in 2003. It wanted to stop the US from sending troops to Pakistan, but Bush never did.

So the US screwed up its inteligence gathering looking for a domestic attack, the years none were scheduled.

  95. Ape-Man says:

Lawrene Wilkerson spoke truth to Cheney! Lawrene Wilkerson is a good and courageous man.

  96. Ape-Man says:

    96 RichardKanePA Says:

Stuff happens. What’s important is how you deal with it. Making it a pre-emptive political football the way Cheney want’s to do is counter productive at best and treasonous at worst.

  97. byng.king says:

So, what of instead of “heavily-biased U.S. support for Israel,” al-Qa’ida was upset with the US because of “heavily-biased U.S. support for South Korea.” Would that mean that the US should abandon South Korea? Since when do the opinions of terrorists dictate US foreign policy?

    What a moron.

  98. Ape-Man says:

  99. irishgrl says:

Cheney and his croneys Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Rove, et al., if left to their own devices, would have surely turned this nation into a fascist regime. They embrace and practice fascism and xenophobia in all they do.

  100. Aristobolus says:

Google this folks–and someone talk to the appropiate authorities–Please. Google Secretary of Transportation, NOrman Mineta’s testimony of a Dick Cheney stand down order on 911 [in the Situation Room] as the MISSLE was coming into the Pentegaon.

  101. Chocolate Jesus says:

    > Juan C. Says:
    > I have to say I don’t
    > believe in “evilness”.

as a devout moral relativist, i agree with you for the most part… “good” and “evil” are star warsian terms made up to make us feel like we can easily ascertain friend from foe..but I do beleive in positive and negative energy, and I beleive that cheney is surrounded by a dark seething miasma of negative energy…I beleive people have auras and his is quite black

  102. newrider says:

    To Hoodathunk,

Personally, I think most of the Bush Administrated should be in jail. I am a major Obama supporter. However, to blame the Reb’s for ‘manufacturing boogie men’ in the case of the Cuban Missle Crisis, are you nuts? First, President Kennedy was president, hardly a Rebublican!. We had many many very clear pictures of various nuclear missles in crates, on railings, being assembled, and 90 miles off our coast. And no ties to anyone???????? The entire economey was supported by the Soviet Union, whose leader was poundin his shoe at the UN saying he was going to destroy America. Yes sir, I believe we had a real problem..yet Pres. Kennedy was able to solve the situation without one shot being fired. There is the difference, hopefully Obama follows that tact.

  103. Diabolus says:

Does anyone have the answer to this. Cheney enters vp office worth around 40 mill. He leaves office worth how mush?????? Did he take the same losses to his retirement account as most of us? Do his comments help his stock profolio or hurt it.

  104. GOPHater says:

Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld should be in prison awaiting execution for war crimes, treason, torture, violations of international law, and violations of the U. S. Constitution. Oh, and by the way, if we need anyone to “pull the switch” on Cheney, I volunteer. This country would be so much better off without the likes of these guys.

  105. Nevar says:

    Archie B Says:
    Can you elaborate?

Sure, Archie, it’s easy. All you need to do is quit drinking so many beers and watching to much television.

Exercise helps the brain function better too, and it will give Edith a chance to vacuum under the cushions.

  106. Perry logan says:

Evil, yes. But also incompetent. That’s today’s Republicans. It would all be funny if people weren’t getting killed.

  107. s3n says:

Colin Powell’s former chief of staff: Cheney is … fearmongering

    Thanks for the update pal.
Do let us know if he starts showing off vials of white powder and investing cartoon bio-weapons labs as part of his fearmongering routine.

Next up, Michelle Malkin has a problem with someone being racist.

  108. Luis M says:

    byng.king Says:
Since when do the opinions of terrorists dictate US foreign policy? What a moron.

Since it’s not only the terrorists who think the US-Israeli relationship needs to be analyzed.

  109. Ape-Man says:

Cheeney:“we are not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek”

Cheeney insults our intellegence and Jesus in one sentence, but i bet he sent shivers up the spine of neo-cons…

I guess when cheeney discredits Jesus [turn the other cheek] he doesn’t count paying off the enemy. now that is called kissing terrorist ass. Stupid cheney!

  110. Dingy Dan 59 says:

The problem with people like Wilkerson (and I see he learned well from Powell) is that they only speak out AFTER they leave office – to get attention, write a book, go on a talk show, etc. That is disgraceful… leadership means speaking out when you see or suspect a wrong doing and in the case of Cheney vis-a-vis Wilkerson, I suspect it goes back many years.

  111. olcowboy says:

Y’all are gonna wake up one morning with a little sheet head at your door giving you the option to convert or die. In the course of battle, it is my contention that the combatants should agree to a level playing field. Consequently, we should have sent the Gitmo boys back home the smae way we got some of our troops back….in pieces, beheaded and full of pork guts. Read your history, you morons. The fundamentalist Muslim has only one caliphate and that is the subjugation of everything that is not Muslim. The only difference between this war and the Crusades is the weaponry.
