Meghan McCain prematurely slams Obama for going on Leno and ignoring the financial crisis.

Yesterday on Twitter, Meghan McCain hit President Obama’s decision to go on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno:

hmmm, maybe the president shouldn’t go on leno and talk about basketball and instead explain to me how those morons at AIG got bonuses…

But as Huffington Post’s Sam Stein points out, “Perhaps Meghan shouldn’t have been so impatient with her critiques.” In fact, Obama referenced AIG at least seven times, and the New York Times wrote that “most of the discussion was devoted — perhaps for the first time in the show’s history — to in-depth discussions of tax policy, as well as macroeconomics and finance.” From his appearance last night:

I think that part of the calculation they were making was the way the contracts were written said, if you don’t pay us immediately, then we can claim three times as much as we were owed under the bonuses. … We’re going to do everything we can to see if we can get these bonuses back.

Oh Megan. Just when you achieved a little (and I mean little) credibility, you screw it up. What about Dady celebrating his birthday while New Orleans drowned?

  3. paleolib says:

The wingers and self-proclaimed beltway pundits seem to be badly out of practice in dealing with a president who can walk and chew gum at the same time.

hmmm, maybe the president shouldn’t go on leno and talk about basketball and instead explain to me how those morons at AIG got bonuses…

hmm, maybe Meggie should mature a bit more and learn to think before she speaks.
I mean, we already know she doesn’t know anything about the economy and now we see she doesn’t know anything about the president.

  5. Danny Noonan says:

Look, we all know our economy is a mess. But Obama needs to spend some time giving the appearance that the sky isn’t falling. Making NCAA picks and being on Leno gives Americans a sense of normalcy at a time when people need to be reassured that they can spend money. If Obama did nothing but talk about how screwed we are that wouldn’t help.

Oh, also, Meghan: your dad’s a mouth-breathing moron when it comes to the economy. Stop talking.

Because , through osmosis , you now possess the same power(s) that your father does , and are the only one capable of straightening out the entire AIG and economic mess , but cannot (and will not) tell anyone else ?

    Wonderful

  7. tom says:

I am sure that LaLa Ingraham and Annie Coultergeist will take Megs to task for her premature outburst.

  8. Smith1 says:

Meghan, you should have waited before pulling an Ingraham. Donchya think?

Appearing on Leno was a smart move by President Obama. Leno has a sizable audience every night, plus many more will see the interview on the internets. Just another good way for President Obama to get his ideas out to the public.

  9. And Yet... says:

Impulsive twittering not always (ever?) a really good idea. But where would Miss McCain have learned a bit of impulse control- from watching & listening to her old man?

  10. Fred says:

hmmm, maybe the president shouldn’t go on leno and talk about basketball and instead explain to me how those morons at AIG got bonuses…

Maybe you should stop lying, bush approved the bonuses and forced TARP under threat of martial law.

Do you really want that explained again? Really?

  11. NoMoreBush says:

Everyone just needs to step from the ledge. It is very clear why Obama went on Leno — to talk to the American people who likely are not plugged in to every political publication and show. His campaign was grass roots and I seriously doubt he will sit behind the White House walls to govern. He is taking his message to the people, but dim bulbs like Kyle and Alexander are too busy lofting petty criticisms and too stoopid to notice until, that is, 2010 when the Republicans get swamped again. Can we please have an opposition party with some ideas? Please.

Geez, all this outrage about the Leno appearance and his ef’ing basketball picks. This is all so very petty and stoopid!

  12. A Patriot Acting says:

Meghan McCain obviously has plenty of time on her hands as a trust fund baby and amateur blogger. Maybe she has some suggestions as to how to solve the Country’s economic problems. What? Oh Sorry, I forgot that despite her positioning herself as a “progressive Republican” (whatever the Cheney that is) that Repubs don’t solve problems, they just complain about people who try…LOUDLY!

  13. konchster says:

After 8 years with a one ball juggler for Prez it is pretty amazing that the President can be reached at any moment. Ms. McCain needs to remember this appearance took place a couple of hours after her hero’s bedtime

  14. larkohio says:

Obama is addressing the economic crisis and lots of other things too. I am glad he went on Leno. We elected him. We want to hear him. He can do more than one thing at a time.
I surely disagree with Meghan politically. I am so darn glad Obama is president and W. is not! What a relief!

  15. ralph the wonder llama says:

It’s pretty clear that Obama is giving the tighty-righties nothing to grab onto, if they’re criticizing him for using a teleprompter and for going on Leno.

It’s driving them up the wall.

  16. penalcolony says:

Let’s face it; the McCains just aren’t very smart. The patriarch has done an excellent job of convincing the world that he finished near the bottom of his Naval Academy class becuase he was such a mavericky rebel, but if truth were told his very modest IQ probably had as much to do with it — and nothing I’ve seen of the daughter suggests she’s any different.

  17. Purple State says:

It’s Twitter. Stop treating this like it’s news. Everyone’s got an opinion.

  18. MapleStreet says:

I’m really missing a lot of things here. All could be “what is the problem ?”

*) As a manager, when the environment gets really rough – THAT IS A GREAT TIME TO INJECT A LITTLE LEVITY ! Say like a BBall discussion.

*) President Obama has been in office almost 2 months and he hasn’t gone to Crawford Texas to clear brush for a single day.

Yet Bush inherrited the world’s worse problems including a Clinton Recession and 2 wars. how come Bush was always clearing brush ?

*) Look at all the initiatives which President Obama has begun in a mere 2 months. If anything, I’m worried that he is on the road to burnout.

*) One part of the presidential role in the economic recovery is appearing before the people. Leno was a great opportunity to reach a wide audience. Additionally, media is changing – instead of a speech by a talking head, Leno gave the opportunity to talk about the problems in a relaxed atmosphere.

  22. A Patriot Acting says:

Yeah it’s not like he’s spending his time being productive like clearing brush and taking vacations while ignoring reports of a coming attack on our Country. Or having birthday cake with some old fool while New Orleans drowns. Or announcing that he is sprinting to the finish line and checking out 6 months before his term is over in the midst of economic collapse and two wars.

  24. NoMoreBush says:

Agree Purple State. Meghan McCain can twitter til she turns blue. Who cares? It’s Republican “leadership” who takes to the mics to whine and moan that, how dare he leave Washington, while we are in an economic cataclysm — and he should spend less time on his NCAA picks — these clowns need to be called out, not Meghan McCain.

  25. mary says:

They’re all just jealous because Obama got such a rousing standing ovation!

One minute his critics are all saying “too much doom and gloom!” and the next it’s, “too much levity!”.

  26. Marie says:

Megan was a little behind in her talking points from the RNC — the basketball meme was early in the day – she needed to wait for the latest edition of talking points before she opined.

  27. NoMoreBush says:

5..4..3..2..1 the countdown when the Republican “leadership” wastes perfectly good oxygen and air time to bemoan the Special Olympics crack.

  28. Marie says:

BTW, When Obama talks about the state of the economy, he is discouraging the people; when he talks about his plans to get us out of it, he is talking too generally; when he talks about basketball, he is too frivolous; when he travels out of DC to meet the public, he is “running away.”

I don’t think the public is as stupid and easily hoodwinked as the repugs seem to think — they are so accustomed to their brainwashed base, who are more than willing to believe the lie du jour.

  31. fletc3her says:

I think the choice of the Tonight Show as a venue for the President to get his message to the American people is more of a reflection on the splintering array of news channels.

The ratings for last night’s broadcast was 11.2 (representing about 17 million viewers). Earlier this month highest rated nightly news broadcast was NBC with a 6.7 rating (about 10 million viewers). However, even if Obama had gone on that half hour broadcast he would not have been carried live and not for nearly as much time as he got on the Tonight Show.

An address to the nation could draw higher ratings and would be carried live, but those are generally reserved for important announcements.

Republicans aren’t even trying to hide the fact that they are going to criticize any and everything Obama does. Hypocrisy be damned. They are just slinging crap and hoping something will stick.

And Missy McCain’s Twitter is a transparent attempt to get back in the Republican’s good graces after she was exposed as a thin-skinned intellectual lightweight last week.

So let me see if I have this right. A relatively inconsequential woman with a blog tweets a fleeting thought about a future event. Someone “proves” her wrong in a blog on the Huffington Post. And you showcase this blog response in your own blog posting along with further evidence (a quote) that the fleeting thought that was tweeted by an irrelevant tweeter was wrong.

This is just getting to be a little too weird for me. If Meghan McCain’s a twittering fool (along with John McCain, George Stephanopoulos and now Jake Tapper too), then what does that make you?

  45. John Barringer says:

Well, Megan has always been careful to point out that she’s a Republican. Guess she just proved it. Nothing like tossing insubstantial and inaccurate criticism at your opponents to gain Republican street cred.

Megan is 24 years old and her Father John is old enough to be her GrandFather with 48 years between them. Maybe when Cindy get’s remarried Megan can have a step Dad who is more intune of days generation. John was born in 1936 and that makes a big difference as he still thinks he’s in the 40′ and 50’s.

What a hurtful thing to say about the disabled. I recommend to the obama teleprompter staff that they never ever let him be separated from the teleprompter again. If they do, then his true feelings about white people and hispanics might come out.

when the president of the united states comes out and mocks disabled people it should concern everyone. However, I can see how the liberal democrats on this board would cover for him because hypocritic double standards are the norm.

  60. Tim43 says:

I guess that we shouldn’t be too surprised by this gauche and downright cruel comment- no different than his classless cheap-shot on 90-yr-old Nancy Reagan in his first presser.

Trouble is that the REAL Barack tends to leak-out when he’s not hard-wired to a TelePrompTer-

Narcissists are often callous- and even ruthless. They tend to lack empathy and/or a conscience. This is evident in Obama’s lack of interest in his own half-brother who lives in poverty in Kenya, or his aunt found living in public housing in Boston.

Obama’s almost certainly a pathological narcissist… the most dangerous charismatic leaders are, comes from an insecure childhood (like Barack’s).

Indicators include control freakery, grandiose self-importance, feeling “above the law”, interpersonally exploitive, inability to handle criticism, lack of empathy, arrogant behavior, surrounds himself with sycophants… sound familiar?

Obama is a mess- and his insecurities, bad childhood, and irresponsible, far-left-wierdo mother are now all OUR problem, too-

They were essentially the liberal media rolling out the red carpet for the messiah obama. I did not see any real debating go on. But keep on dreaming Rich.

In fact he was brilliant. Jay tried to trip him up but he clearly was head and shoulders above Jay and pretty much anyone on this stuff. He sounded like a financial analyst up there, like a professor talking to his students in a class lecture. Explaining some difficult financial concept.

President Obama really was something last night. So calm, so well informed and articulate on the financial crisis, he really was impressive. He just gets better each time I see him.

It’s going to happen, your great leader is going away for a long long time. Why do you defend the indefensable?

And going over your posts, what does what Megan said have anything to do with a teleprompter? What does what she said have anything to do with racism?

Really Tim, my vocabulary doesn’t even cover what you are.

It is a simple truth that you folks will do anything and everything to cover for your messiah obama, including looking the other way when he mocks the disabled. I simply contrasted the obvious that you same liberals would roast Bush if he said the exact same thing on the Leno show. I could hear the cries for impeachment now if bush said that about the disabled. Don’t kid yourself Rich.

Anyways, I lost my support for President Bush about 4 years ago when he became a “liberal” republican that spend money like a drunken democrat. My third party candidate didn’t have a chance in the one party system that we have called Repubicratism. The only difference between the Republicans and Democrats today is who gets taxed and who gets the handouts.

Now really Rich … Do you fancy yourself so much that you actually think the heads of state in the Geneva convention will convict bush based on your letters? Do you need to be pinched to wake up out of your utopian slumber?

What offends more is that the obama sycophants like those present on this blog, have such a blind double standard that they can’t even see beyond their own bias. Bush or McCain would have been attacked endlessly for such a highly offensive comment. But obama gets a free pass and his followers simply brush it off like nothing happened.

Oh my GOD Timmeh. You have pegged the stupid hivemind moron scale. Did you REALLY try to make a point by linking to Freerepublicanswer.moron???? Really? Gee let me guess they are bashing Obama. Probably talking about his teleprompter and calling him Messiah since they are bound to be as stupid and brainwashed as YOU. What a laugh. Thanks again for the free clown show. We have had some MONUMENTALLY stupid trolls recently and you have proven once again that you are as stupid as any of them

  83. Robt says:

Can someone at Think Progress explain why all of a sudden Megan McCain is some source of important punditry?

-Because Coulter and Ingraham had a cat fight with her?

-Because Megan is John’s daughter that blogs?

-This seems less than a Britney Spears report, doesn’t it?

  84. kasinca says:

Daughter of old man yells at the clouds just like her father.
