Obama sends a direct message to the Iranian people.

Last night, President Obama sent “a special message to the people and government of Iran” on Nowruz, the beginning of the Persian New Year. Obama acknowledged the strain in the relationship between the two countries and said that he seeks “engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect”:

So in this season of new beginnings I would like to speak clearly to Iran’s leaders. We have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.

You, too, have a choice. The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations. You have that right — but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization. And the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create.

Watch it:

Matt Yglesias calls the video “well done,” with “a Persian transcript and a web video with Persian subtitles” on the White House website.

Great move. The Iranian people are much more receptive and open to Western culture than the religious zealots running the country. We should have done this years ago.

Ok, I don’t know if this is a Youtube problem or something with my machine or what, but the Persian captions are totally screwed up. They’re reading left-to-right and all the connectors aren’t connecting – they’re just displaying in their solo forms.

    Eek!

  3. Purple State says:

I know that he is teleprompted for speeches like this, but I can already see the distinct differences from Bush. No deer-in-the-headlights look.

I hope the Iranian people don’t see his as a disguised distrust, but more as a genuine hope to open diplomatic ties.

This is a great tactic, and he’s doing it at home, too. He is not staying in DC, but coming out in the country and talking to people. Good for him!

  5. A Patriot Acting says:

Ah diplomacy, I missed you the past eight years! If you change a few words it sounds a lot like President Obama’s olive branch to Repubs:

So in this season of new beginnings I would like to speak clearly to Republican Party leaders. We have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the Democrats, Republicans and the
national community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.
You, too, have a choice. American citizens want their Country to take its rightful place in the community of nations. We have that right — but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or lies, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the American people and civilization. And the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create.

So far it hasn’t worked with the Repubs, they are still fixated on destroying what is left of this Nation. However, the leaders in Iran seem a bit more rational than what is left of the Republican Party.

I certainly agree, yet others would argue that he’s not doing his job by staying in D.C. during this time of crisis. If he did, they’d still be dogging him for not connecting to the people like he is now.

It’s a shame that they will never be pleased until he can clone himself and be in two places at once. And if he did, they’d blame science and stem-cell research for opening Pandora’s Box.

How is that a talking point? All politicians use teleprompters when giving a speech. So do news anchors and talk show hosts. It’s just a fact of production.

Are people seriously criticizing President Obama for using a teleprompter, like every other president has done since the invention of the teleprompter?

  13. starbellysneetch says:

Of course this could be directed at the Republicants, Patriot. Are they not the self-proclaimed American Taliban?

They’ll always argue that, which is why he should keep defending himself and calling hem out when he speaksto the public. Except for the South, where racism still lives, his approval ratings are in the upper 70’s and lower 80’s. That’s incredible.

Let me rephrase that. “He might be teleprompted for speeches like this…” There’s no way of really knowing that. My bad.

My point is that he is still a great communicator, technology or not.

I am hardly the Limbaugh advocate. I think I threw up a little in my mouth there. He is strictly RED; not a drop of blue in him. He will never be a moderate, nor will he ever be someone I look to for political advice.

Not one smile in three and a half minutes? I expected all that good will and thoughts of family celebration to produce even the tiniest of grins. Alas, no.

Obama wasn’t alone in crafting a message for the Iranian people. Israeli President Peres said Tehran’s leaders should ’stop spending their days dealing with bombs and uranium – is this in the name of God?’

Israel bombed its democratic neighbor to the north in 2006 with bombs, specifically millions of cluster bombs as the cease fire neared. Peres’ Israel bombed the ghetto known as Gaza, while holding 1.5 million people under siege. Israel also has 150-200 nuclear weapons, either made from enriched uranium or plutonium. Is this in the name of God?

    _____________________________________________________________

I suspect that’s just the difference between reading your OWN words off a teleprompter and reading someone else’s. Bush always tended to look like he was seeing the words for the first time.

And then there’s Clinton, who drove his teleprompter operators crazy because even though the words on the prompter were his, he had a tendency to deviate to unscripted tangents whenever he got passionate and enthusiastic about what he was saying.

Bears repeating, as I have precisely the same sentiment and it’s exactly what I would have wrote.

It’s about time we remembered (we used to know it) that the vast majority of the world’s people want peace, and they want to admire and respect the U.S. When I travel, even to Egypt, all I hear regarding American politics is, “We love America and Americans, but we’re not very excited about how your government is behaving.”

  73. ralph the wonder llama says:

And another point that trolls continually get wrong:

“disagreement” is not, for most of us, enough to identify a troll. Many of us wish there were more reasonable conservatives on here to debate issues.
No, a troll is pretty easily defined as a poster who has no interest in reasonable debate, who simply wants to get his undescended rocks off by provoking others.

Trolls used to get their jollies making prank phone calls, until Caller ID made that practice too dangerous. So now they stalk discussion forums, make fart noises and giggle when they’re dismembered through logic and judicious use of reality.

  74. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Almost half of America voted for the guy who can speak without a script.

Oh, THAT ONE! Sorry, I forgot about him. The problem is he NEEDED two scripts – one to keep his ever-spinning message straight and one for his constipation.

  75. Shayne says:

So McCain’s “bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” wasn’t on the teleprompter? The moron should have stuck to the script.

  76. Gary Kleppe says:

Don’t you think this speech was just that? The first paragraph was about the U.S. and the second about Iran.

It’s a start, I guess. But really meaningful ways to clean house here would be things like drastically reducing our military budget; ending our occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan; telling Israel to end its oppression of the Palestinians and not to attack its neighbors again, and cutting it off from military aid if it refuses to comply; and supporting international law agreements that don’t give our own government a veto power against any meaningful enforcement.

If we aren’t willing to do that, then we have no business lecturing anybody else on how to be a good neighbor.

  77. MapleStreet says:

    Good job Mr President!

Maybe we can negotiate, maybe we can’t. But definitely good to open the door and try to find some form of communication.

If we aren’t willing to do that, then we have no business lecturing anybody else on how to be a good neighbor.

Agreed. And from what I see, I think President Obama is willing to do those things but they take time, practically and politically. As long as President Obama moves in the right direction, I’ll trust his skills in doing so in a “safe” pace.

    ___________________________________________________________

This is what I don’t understand. Limbaugh takes things that are completely meaningless and turns them into “digs”, trusting his dittoheads to run with the ball even though the ball isn’t even inflated.

Example: “Democrat” Party. Is this supposed to be insulting? It just seems to me a demonstration of bad grammar. Yet we now have dittoheads all over the place using it as a pejorative.

And now Rush is going full-tilt on making “his teleprompter says” stick. What are you saying, Rush? Are you suggesting that President Obama’s teleprompter is possessed of a life of its own, and is effectively running the country by telling our President what to say? Or are you implying that others write Obama’s speeches and tell him what to say? Um…that was the last President — not this one.

Rush hasn’t got the stones to accuse Obama outright of being a puppet, because he’s got nothing to back it up. So he spouts this snide drivel hoping it will grow legs and people will repeat it ad nauseum.

This is the way the wingnuts work – a drivel, rinse, repeat cycle for the next four years.

Not that I’m aware of. Do you have some ind of support for this supposition?

Would it be safe to say he is for “negotiating with terrorists” at this point in time?

Uh… if by “negotiating” you meant “issuing a diplomatic statement” and if by “terrorists” you meant ” a sovereign nation of brown people that scare the bejeezus out of right-wingers”, then sure.

  99. Fred says:

Ralph, Rebecca Lobo is still living in the pre-recession mindset. They still think that what they think matters.

  101. A Patriot Acting says:

JK says: “JUST NAME A TOPIC!”

Well fool here are a couple to get started. Mind you that this is just the first several weeks of his Presidency. It seems that President Obama has accomplished more positive things for America in less than two months that George W. Shithead did in eight years all while tackling the economic mess that your boys so gleefully created:

Passing Schip, Ending Guantanamo, an end to the Iraq fiasco, passing the stimulus package, allowing stem cell research, reversing Bush’s Provider Conscience Rule, reversing the casket ban, enforcing the Endangered Species Act, allowing states to set their own fuel efficiency standards, the Equal Pay For Equal Work bill and withdrawing oil and gas leases for drilling near national parks in Utah and putting the kibosh on all the last minute ammendments that Bush tried to leave like a turd in the White House toilet on his way out the door.

You are wrong, according to the link you posted. Obama’s position hasn’t changed. He’s consistently said that he’d be willing to talk to Iran, provided the talks are substantive.

And no, it’s not “negotiating with terrorists” unless you consider Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists. That’s not a universally accepted opinion.

  106. Fred says:

It requires a lot of patience, but can be effective, if your only purpose is to waste the time of others.

    Um, no.

    THE TELEPROMPTER RULES! = 1 * 2 * … * (THE TELEPROMPTER RULES – 1) * (THE TELEPROMPTER RULES)

    Prove that the eqaution:

    THE TELEPROMPTER RULES! = T*H*E*T*E*L*E*P*R*O*M*P*T*E*R*R*U*L*E*S

is unsolvable if the ! is greater than 2.

Good cop/bad cop? Obama would be the good cop, Peres the Israeli hammer.

  180. Rich H says:

Wow, skimming through this thread and reading the trolls is something else. One thought for the idiots that think a telepromter is a new space age invention.

Way back when Bush was debating (was it) Gore or John Kerry, he had that mysterious hump in the middle of his shoulder blades and it was was a concern for many who thought it may have been a receiver to provide him answers. Honestly, that’s the much better way to go, because we all know he couldn’t read, or speak, or make a coherent sentence, or a good decision or…. Boy, that could go on forever.

Ah, crap. You’re right. I was way off, sorry.

    Ok so in Base Z (with A=zero), A! = A*A = B
    B! = B*B = B
    C! = B*C = C
    D! = B*C*D = G
    E! = B*C*D*E = Y
    F! = B*C*D*E*F = EQ

    and so on.

    My brain really hurts now.

  182. Rich H says:

    Back to the topic,

All of the Iranians I know (quick, you better turn me in!) are good hard working people, and most of them actually call themselves Persians.

The general population of Iran is fairly progressive and they no more like the lunatics in charge of their country than we like the war criminals in charge of ours.

If there is a way to open channels and get a moderate government in Iran you would find that we have more similarities than differences.

The right wing should just quit fear mongering. There is nothing wrong with the Iranian people any more than there is with americans because of Bush and Cheney. Good move on the presidents part.

  183. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Excellent points, Rich H.

We know that nothing draws a people around their leaders more quickly or surely than an external threat.

By indulging his own juvenile bellicosity for eight years, all Bush succeeded in doing was in strengthening the power of the Iranian regime. It was stupid foreign policy, driven by emotion (fear, primarily) and a desire to look “tough”.

  184. Rich H says:

    Hi Ralph,

Nice to see we finally have a President who sees the big picture, planet wise. Honestly, I don’t know what’s up with all this republican fear mongering. You would think they’d get a clue after getting blown out in the last election. But I guess it’s hard to modify a reptilian brain.

  185. youtube says:

    great job, keep going Obama.

  186. stateofthedivision says:

    Obama-America’s unsmiling good cop

    Peres-Israel’s taunting bad cop

“Things in Iran are tough,” said the Israeli president at the start of the address that preceded the blessing. “There is great unemployment, corruption, a lot of drugs and a general discontent? You can’t feed your children enriched uranium, they need a real breakfast. It cannot be that the money is invested in enriched uranium and the children are told to remain a little hungry, a little ignorant.”
