On CNN last week, former Vice President Dick Cheney said that President Obama’s national security policies, including his plan to close Guantanamo Bay, will “raise the risk to the American people of another attack.” In an interview with 60 Minutes that aired last night, Obama responded, saying, “I fundamentally disagree with Dick Cheney.” Obama added that “the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney” hasn’t “made us safer“:
OBAMA: The facts don’t bear him out. I think he is– that attitude, that philosophy has done incredible damage– to our image and position in the world. I mean, the fact of the matter is after all these years how many convictions actually came out of Guantanamo? How many– how many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney? It hasn’t made us safer. What it has been is a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment. Which means that there is constant effective recruitment of– Arab fighters and Muslim fighters against U.S. interests all around the world.
Watch it:
Cheney’s actions and political decisions had absolutely nothing to do with making America safer. It had more to do with making America more powerful, but mostly it had to do with making a small subset of Americans richer and more powerful by any means necessary.
Cheney had once said that the only mistake that Nixon made was allowing his people to get caught. That pretty much sums up his Machiavellian mindset.
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 amDuh!
Again, WHO WAS ORDERING OUR MILITARY TO “STAND-DOWN” DURING THE ATTACKS OF 9/11????
FCUK YOU DICK.
FCUK YOU AND BURN IN HELL TRAITOR.
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 amyea but, he laughed a lot…
merideth seemed to relish that bit of news, passing it on to the main relisher chuck dodd…
i do wish the president had answered ‘well, yes, steve, maybe i AM a little punch-drunk about this whole friggin mess……..’
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:54 amObama is right.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:03 amCheney is wrong.
I am glad Bush and Cheney are no longer making policy!
The Cheney Doctrine in a nutshell:
a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment. Which means that there is constant effective recruitment of– Arab fighters and Muslim fighters against U.S. interests all around the world.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:04 am“How many– how many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney?”
– -Is Obambi being a bit naive here or generous? Cheney’s plan for Gitmo never entertained the idea of trials, just permamnent incarceration.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 amWhile the interview was pretty good and Obama answered everything fully, I thought Kroft’s question about his being “punch drunk” was way out of line.
As for Cheney, Obama pointed out the facts in his usual calm manner.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:07 amIt’s great to hear Cheney talk now, when he said so little as he ruled the world from his bunker for 8 years! He thinks that feeding Bush”s 23% using the time worn Fear Offensive will somehow clean his sick anti-humanity record. Can’t he just stay secretive like he always was? President Obama is clearly an everyman President, and it’s so refreshing!
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 amThe noose is closing in on Herr Cheney’s neck or he wouldn’t feel the need to be “out there” trying to cook the books.
This last appearance by The Dick, Cheney was an obvious attempt to alter the message since the ranks are closing in on him and his administration of filth.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:13 amDip$hit Cheney was AWOL for 8 years and NOW he finds the need to plaster himself like a feces-filled diaper all over the media?
How transparent this old codger is! We’re onto Dickie’s little game. Let’s bring on the war crimes trails and get to the bottom of Cheney’s Black Ops games.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 amA FEARFUL AMERICA IS AN AMERICA REPUBLICANS CONTROL AND MANIPULATE TO THEIR BENEFIT. PERIOD.
Osama Bin Laden was the best thing that ever happened to Cheney. Do you really think Cheney wanted to capture him?
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:17 amNO!!
SMACK! That, Dickhead Cheney!
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 amWhen are we going to see the light of day on Cheney’s ‘Energy Summit’ when all this crap was dreamed up?

March 23rd, 2009 at 10:24 amOne of President Obama’s strengths is the ability to calmly sit back and clearly label nonsense as nonsense.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:24 amI wish Obama would have been even more critical of the incompetence of Bush/Cheney. We did not get attacked again under Bush/Cheney in spite of their policies, not because of them. Also, Bin Laden and his crew take years between major strikes. Cheney is just hoping for another strike so he can say, “Told ya so.” If Bush/Cheney would have been serious about national security- we wouldn’t have to worry about Bin Laden now.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:25 amObama was right to send his PR guys after Limpballs and to save his direct retorts for Cheney and his lies.
How refreshing to have a thoughtful person as the nation’s leader, one who can give a great prepared speech and speak so well extemporaneously and directly to the American people.
Cheney you, Dick.
PEACE
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:27 amPresident Obama is stating the obvious, but when the POTUS says it the media is forced to pay attention. Thank You President Obama. Eat shit Dick, you traitor.
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:40 am“All the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.”
“Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac.”
“War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it.”
“War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent.”
GEORGE ORWELL
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:41 amObama gave Cheney a classy smack-down.
March 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 amShort-Obama, “Dick go Cheney yourself.”
March 23rd, 2009 at 11:04 amCheney was wrong. We should have gone all-out when we had the chance. Now we’re stuck… losing our prescious bodily fluids while alQuaida is out there flouridating our water!!!
March 23rd, 2009 at 11:25 amWhich comment gets more play though, Cheney’s or Obama’s?
Even on left wing blogs, I think Cheney gets more play.

Does that make Cheney’s ideas more correct or does it make Cheney more of a dick?
March 23rd, 2009 at 11:38 amEven on left wing blogs, I think Cheney gets more play
Cheney…..just the mere mention of his name causes discomfort to the sane. His voice causes revulsion and aversion. If you combine sight AND sound, the reactions are understandably strong and violent. All repulsive. THAT is why he gets “more play”.
March 23rd, 2009 at 12:04 pmObama is right. Our heavy handed policies have cause resentment from the rest of the world. I think that cost is objective.
If we avoid future attacks under Obama’s leadership, his vision for national security will be validated.
If we suffer significant future attack(s) that can somehow be linked to a relaxation in Bush policies, Cheney’s will view will have some merit.
March 23rd, 2009 at 12:08 pmbackup says: queeeef!
You’re excused.
March 23rd, 2009 at 12:18 pmIn the end Cheney stands for the worst we have produced in this country. To waste a mechanical device to keep this mans heart going another few years is unthinkable. But there it is.
Every time Cheney speaks he shows more clearly how crazy he really is. He has no sense, no compassion and no belief in anything but money. Money may be able to keep him alive and comfortable, but not permanently. We must be patient. People like him and his whole cabal, do not last forever. When he dies, the only memories of him will be of criminality, hatred and power, and greed. A war mongering, fear mongering demi-god. That is his place in history.
The fact is Obama has class. And even if I do not agree with all he does, I can applaud his intelligence and his decency. Too bad the last administration had no one who was nearly as good.
March 23rd, 2009 at 12:20 pmCheney made more enemy then anyonelse.
March 23rd, 2009 at 12:22 pm“If we suffer significant future attack(s) that can somehow be linked to a relaxation in Bush policies, Cheney’s will view will have some merit.”
Please give me a break, “Cheney’s view having merit.” As a direct result of Cheney/Bush jr’s policies, decisions and directives (like invading the wrong country after 9-11) terrorism has increased significantly world-wide every year since the 9-11 attacks.
Cheney’s arguments are based on total bushshit with absolutely no emperical data or facts to back them up. That ba$tard has less than zero creditability with any American who reads or thinks.

What would actually make America safer is to help the people that the Taliban is trying to recruit, the 963 million suffering from hunger. That is alot of people to potentially turn into American haters because we unfortunately are viewed to be a nation capable of helping them with the problems (and we actually pledged in 2000 along with 190 other countries to help eradicate global poverty), so it quite easy to be recruited into an organization that provides you with food, water, shelter and schools for the children. The Borgen Project (www.borgenproject.org) has some great ideas on how to help those in need and to change the image of America for the better.

I pray that the Secret Service is on Mr. Obama’s side…
… What with assassin Cheney still roaming free and all.

March 23rd, 2009 at 4:39 pmboy oh boy, bush/cheney sure were “lucky” to get everything they desired IN ADVANCE of 9/11 delivered to them AFTER the fact of 9/11. as “incompetent” as they were, it’s simply astounding how successful they were.
i love hearing people invoke the Incompetence Theory as an excuse against investigating 9/11… it’s clear that anyone employing this fallacy simply cannot imagine anyone more intelligent than themselves, which in itself is the hallmark of stupidity.
are we awake yet?
March 23rd, 2009 at 6:04 pmHere’s Turley on Maddow – wake-up-call! – Please watch this to the end… http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#29845206
March 24th, 2009 at 1:07 amCheney attended Yale University, but he flunked out. Cheney was twice prosecuted for and convicted of drunk driving. Cheney lied to former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey about the grounds for going to war in Iraq. Cheney is a pathological liar. Cheney is incompetent. Cheney would like to think that he is above the law. However, Cheney must pay for crimes against the United States and the world.
Maybe God is judging and punishing Cheney in afflicting Cheney with further heart problems in the here and now (15 October 2008) notwithstanding God’s fiery judgment against Cheney in the afterlife.
Maybe God is also punishing Cheney in having placed Cheney in a wheelchair for whatever period of time.
Cheney has absolutely no standing to comment on national security.
Cheney is a lunatic.
Cheney belongs in an insane asylum.

>If we suffer significant future attack(s) that can somehow >be linked to a relaxation in Bush policies
My prediction is the next attack will come from someone released from Guantamo whose record the pentagon has deliberately scrubbed, desantizated and cleansed of any link to terrorist activities, to trick the obama team into releasing him. They will then send him home and hook him up with the supplies and allies necessary to carry out an attack against our interests somewhere in the world, even if it only kills a few americans. Then this “false flag” will be used to try and make the country think it cant be safe with the torturing, unconstituional policies of the warmongers..
Sorry folks, wake up, do the statistics..your several million times more likely to be killed by a fellow american than you are by a foreigner, and your chance of being killed by a foreigner is roughly equal to that of winning the lottery then being struck by lightning on your way to collect your winnnings..
March 24th, 2009 at 7:05 amIt’s too soon to tell and I hope Cheney isn’t right for everyone’s safety.
