As promised, tonight, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly aired his segment alleging that ThinkProgress caused “pain and suffering” to rape victims. Our unspeakable offense was contained in a March 1 blog post, which reported that O’Reilly had been invited to speak at a fundraising dinner for the Alexa Foundation, which supports rape survivors.
Our post highlighted the fact that in the past, O’Reilly has implied that women who dress in a certain way or consume too much alcohol should perhaps expect to be raped. Here is what he said on his radio show on Aug. 2, 2006, about Jennifer Moore, an 18-year-old woman who was raped and murdered:
Now Moore, Jennifer Moore, 18, on her way to college. She was 5-foot-2, 105 pounds, wearing a miniskirt and a halter top with a bare midriff. Now, again, there you go. So every predator in the world is gonna pick that up at two in the morning. She’s walking by herself on the West Side Highway, and she gets picked up by a thug. All right. Now she’s out of her mind, drunk.
Our post never criticized the Alexa Foundation. Nevertheless, tonight on his show, O’Reilly claimed that ThinkProgress — working with NBC News — deliberately tried to cause pain and suffering for these rape victims. To make his point, he aired a highly-edited ambush interview with me from this past Saturday and concluded, “While Ms. Terkel is certainly a villain, she was obviously used by NBC News.” Watch the segment:
Here are the two things that O’Reilly conveniently left out of his segment:
– His Original Comments. O’Reilly said that he posted the full Aug. 2 interview about Moore on his website. (It’s here.) But he did not repeat his comments on air, nor did he try to defend them — perhaps recognizing that they are indefensible. These comments elicited outrage from more than 900 signatories to a petition by the Concerned Citizens Against Sexual Violence.
– His Harassment. O’Reilly never mentioned to his viewers how he scored that interview with me. He never contacted me for a statement or the chance to appear on his show before deploying his harassment machine. Instead, he sent his producers to stake out my apartment, follow me for two hours, and accost me while I was on vacation in Virginia (and the least prepared to recall a post I had written three weeks earlier).
Producer Jesse Watters — who carried out the stalking and harassment — was right; I didn’t remember O’Reilly’s comments about Mel Gibson in that interview. While O’Reilly may think that on vacation, women sit around thinking about his old radio interviews — prepared to talk about them at any moment — the truth is that they don’t. However, we went back and checked out those specific comments, in which he equates Gibson getting drunk and making anti-Semitic comments to a woman getting raped while she is drunk:
I think it’s safe to say that if Mel Gibson didn’t get drunk, he wouldn’t be in this terrible situation he finds himself in. And if a young woman, 18-year-old Jennifer Moore of Harrington Park, NJ, didn’t get drunk, she’d be alive today.
To recap: I write a blog post highlighting comments O’Reilly made during his radio show. He sends his henchmen to harass me. I can’t immediately recall a three-year old O’Reilly interview when accosted on the street. He refuses to explain or apologize for implying that a dead rape victim should have been expecting the crime. And I’m the villain.

This FNC paparazzi was not an investigative reporter busting a slumlord, guy – it was harassment. He wasn’t out to get her side of the story. You’re incorrectly applying the journalist integrity — scratch that — you expected someone who was ambushed to conduct herself as if she was interviewed by a formal, distinguished journalist when a couple of misguided frat boys conducted themselves like rabid wolves, merely cheap producers. I repeat, she said all that she needed to say.
The TP staff, you should know, is a very civil and knowledgeable lot. Those complements may get thrown around a lot at any time, but this is true in cement.

I will not argue with the fact that journalism on the whole is not as healthy as years gone by. With Wikipedia and the Intertubes around, journalism on the whole is lazy. This doesn’t apply to just the left; the right is just as unconcerned with doing actual research.
However, this does not mean that Bill is the epitome of journalistic energy. Sending out his producers to ambush someone trying to go on vacation is just as irresponsible as the journalist who decides to take talking points and run with them without checking the actual facts. Again, there are plenty on the left that do the same, but Bill is hardly the hardest working journalist in the biz.

Watters trying to ooze around that by claiming that the Mel Gibson portion of said rant somehow made the context of the other remarks acceptable is disingenuous to all but the sleaziest O’Reilly apologists. And if someone has a link showing that Terkel’s story caused any anguish to Alexa or her family (or did damage to her cause), I have yet to see it. Sure, Terkel hemmed and hawed a bit, but that’s the point of an ambush – to catch somebody flat-footed. And that’s why O’Reilly always has to use his home court – he has told so many lies over the years that he dare not go on a straight news show because he could not know which of the thousands of prevarications he may have to answer for.

I listen to the entire segement and you did take him out of context and I just finished watching the segment you wrote about his “highly-edited ambush interview with me from this past Saturday and concluded, “While Ms. Terkel is certainly a villain, she was obviously used by NBC News.” Watch the segment”. O’Reilly’s statement, in its complete context, regarding the rape victim in question had to do with personal responsibility and alcohol (if listening to the entire diatribe is too painful, read the title). He didn’t say she deserved to be raped and murdered, but instead that she stuck out like a sore thumb to predators or any other guy with a hard on because she was scantilly clad. The point he was emphasizing was that had she not been drunk she might have thought different about even placing herself in such a situation or been better able to fight off such an attack. I hardly doubt anyone would argue that severe intoxication + scantilly dress + out on the street in the middle of the night = good, safe, clean fun.
As for the whiney individual writing this blog, it’s not stalking when you choose to make yourself a public figure. You are making a mountain out of a mole hill which just forces the rest of us “unwilling participants” to have to hear about it over and again. We’re bored already. You both are liars by omission.

However, Amanda has chronicled in her previous posts exactly what has happened. This isn’t a mere request for an interview. This is an example of a paparazzi scheme to get an answer out of her at an inconvenient time.
The sides are stacked in favor of the producers, who are prepared for the questions and the answers they want to hear. The interviewee is unprepared to argue their side.
Amanda’s no victim, as she appears to be prepared for getting flak from the other side. However, this method that FOX uses to ambush people is just wrong.

Cheep shot reporters at the Spin Factor think it’s journalism to ambush someone, demanding that they quote, verbatim, a comment from a few years back and insinuating that it is they, the ambushed, who are dishonest. THAT ladies and gentlemen, is trash reporting. Bill-doh O’Liely has a history of operating at this standard; A standard “REAL” reporters would be ashamed at.
It would be a far different story had they, the ambush team, presented Amanda with Bill-doh’s screeds and then demanded of her to point out said false accusations. But they didn’t. Most cable outlets have MSNBC in their premium lineup (meaning you pay extra to get those stations) whereas all cable outlets have Fixed News in their normal lineup.
The day it’s a level playing field and MSNBC is as accessible to the public as Fixed News, then you can declare a winner one way or another.
The same goes for the argument that conservative talk radio is more popular than progressive talk radio. How it could be any other way when 80% of the radio stations are run by conservative corporations. When there is a ratio of 20 to 1 conservative to progressive talk radio shows available in any given market, it is once again not a level playing field.
Until we can do something to break up the media consolidation that has happened in the last 10 years, the only way we will be able to get any reliable news/opinion is to get it on the internet.

Just make sure you have your video cam ready, when Oreilly’s punks come a calling.
Then tell them “sure I’ll talk to you, just lemme get my camera going here”.
Then you take out your camera, and video tape them video taping you.
That way, when you corner them on something, they won’t be able to edit it out.
And you can put the entire video up on YouTube, BEFORE Oreilly gets to air it.

I applaud Ms. Terkel for her preemptive post, further showing evidence of such obscene distortion of truth. That is the first and most important thing we can do to press back against the tide of big-headed media creatures spreading lies to the American people. Document, document, document.
Secondly, I beg all of you, ignore the trolls. While it is tempting to run mental laps around them, it is energy better spent on bigger targets. Please, I implore you, let them be. To acknowledge them is to give them power, to ignore them is to deprive them of that.
