Terkel Discusses O’Reilly’s Harassment Machine With MSNBC’s Olbermann
Last weekend, Bill O’Reilly sent his producers to ambush ThinkProgress’s Amanda Terkel while she vacationed in Virginia. Last night, O’Reilly showed portions of the footage, lying to viewers that Amanda had attacked rape victims and a rape victims’ support organization.
Tonight, Amanda discussed O’Reilly’s harassment machine — of which she is hardly the first victim — with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. Amanda noted the disturbing irony of O’Reilly trying to defend his comments about rape by sending out two men to stalk her:
Bill O’Reilly was trying to show that he cares about women who have been victims of crime. So to make that point, he sends two men to find my home address and to follow me on vacation? I mean, it was incredibly disturbing. The rest of the weekend, I was constantly looking over my shoulder, wondering how long they had been following me, if they’re still following me.
Amanda also noted that O’Reilly’s producer ambushed her when she was least expecting it and unprepared to answer his questions. “O’Reilly may be surprised I don’t sit around on vacation thinking about him,” she said. Watch it:
Olbermann concluded the segment by stating, “On behalf of television, my apologies for him.”

Basic facts, Bill0 probably doesn’t pay attention to blogs, he responded to the protests aimed at a charity function designed to raise money for the victims of rape and Amanda’s ill advised (and organized) protest of that event. He was asked to join as the keynote speaker for his ability to RAISE MONEY for women who have fallen victim to this horrific crime. THAT is the story, plain and simple. What really happened?
I’ve been wondering about that myself, Keith. All one needs to do is Google any variation of “Alexa Foundation” to find their site. They have a “contact us” button. So, anyone who read any of the stories could have contacted them. However, I’ve seen no mention, aside from Bill0 and his minions, of “hateful emails”.
It’s very regrettable if anyone did, indeed, send hateful emails that upset any innocent party. But it’s a solid fact that Amanda never called for any such action.

If I had started a foundation for the parents of kids with autism—just an example—and I booked a fund-raising luncheon with a well-known speaker promoting his/her book (unrelated to autism) and then someone showed me proof that this author had claimed in the past that autism wasn’t real, it was just lazy parents looking for an excuse, blah, blah, blah—
then I think I’d put the integrity of the parents of kids with autism first and confront the book promoter. Whether or not anyone else does that, is their business. But I would certainly not be flattered if the author portrayed me, my organization, and the beneficiaries of my organization as victims because people wrote honestly about what the author said about autism. I would assume that most people who wrote to me to inform me of what he had said in the past were doing so out of concern.

What is MORE telling, however, is the “for a reason” — you use the pseudo reasoning of “appeal to popularity” (under the ASSUMPTION that your stat has any truth value); which is to say that you claim that “because of O’reillie’s higher rating (higher pouplarity) he is better/more truthful/correct/etc.. Pseudo reasoning is always a bad thing — it is at best a weak argument, and most often patently false.
As it is, you argue nothing of merit. Can you present a case that uses facts and rational argumentation, or is that all you have?

Ratings mean nothing. Irrelevant. It’s just a number reflecting how many televisions are on. What you need to do is go out and ask if viewers agree with what these shows are saying. Only then would you really get a noteworthy reading of ratings.

With all due respect, I would ask Keith Oberman as well as the owners of this blog to devote some time to showing the real victims and discussing the real problems which is in part of course a corrupt and corporate media but you must tell your readers that media corruption has a purpose and a goal.
In he 60s, the Vietnam war ended because newspapers actually started showing the American bodies on TV. That’s what you as a progressive blog and Keith Oberman should be doing in my opinion and that’s what in my opinion needs to be done to make true progress. Until then, it’s really just more noise. Maybe, a better tune than Fox but your really just playing into the corporate media’s hands with this story by creating yet another distraction without a clear message.

Its a near certainty that he would claim protection under the 1st Amendment and cases that deal with Constitutional issues generally end up going all the way to the SCOTUS. That kind of attitude, in addition to the sex-crime he committed himself, and many other times he’s condemned victims of crimes including his claim that a young kidnapping victim “probably enjoyed it“, makes him an inappropriate choice to speak at a function hosted by a victims advocacy group and makes him fair game for criticism.
He could have been a man and admitted that some of his statements were inappropriate and apologized. No one would have heard more about the subject if he had taken the high road. But, he had to compound the situation by being a classless bully. He spent three weeks plotting his revenge against the person who, among the many, he thought would be least able and willing to defend herself.

I have to guess on this one. I’m assuming that you are implying that context changes the meaning of words. There’s much truth to that, however, all words have meaning. And some words are wrong regardless of context. Ditto for deeds.
For what it’s worth, I used to be a Republican. However, their continued embrace of the most extreme members has alienated me, and MANY other moderates. I would dearly love to see one, or more, viable alternatives to the Democrats but, today’s GOP doesn’t fit that description. They’ve become a party of extremists and obstructionists.
